Work projects, volunteers being sought for United Way’s Day of Caring

Wednesday, August 7 marks the date for Livingston County United Way’s 22nd Annual Day of Caring. The Day of Caring is a one-day community impact event that brings together volunteers to assist those needing help in our community. In 2023, 50 projects took place and involved over 750 volunteers.

Every year Livingston County United Way accepts worksite proposals from local residents, seniors, schools, churches, disabled residents and non-profit agencies. The work requests are often minor household repairs/projects, cleaning and yard work that the homeowner is not able to do on their own. Anyone can recommend a worksite and is encouraged to apply for a neighbor or friend who needs extra help. Registration deadline for worksites is Monday, June 10.

Volunteers are invited to register individually or as a group. Companies, clubs and organizations are invited and encouraged to participate together. What better way to showcase a company’s volunteer spirit while making a difference. Bolster employee morale through team building and connecting individuals to their community. Volunteers can choose to work a morning or afternoon shift, or all day. Registration deadline for volunteers is Sunday, June 30.

“The impact made on Livingston County by Day of Caring volunteers is priceless,” stated Patricia Sliter, Executive Director of Livingston County United Way. “This day touches lives in a big way – for the recipients as well as the volunteers.

”Additionally, our wonderful friends at Citizens Insurance are hosting a picnic luncheon for all Day of Caring volunteers at their Howell headquarters,” continued Sliter. “This gives our volunteers a chance to relax, enjoy great food and share stories with others that have helped out.”

To register for a worksite, to volunteer, or learn more about Livingston County United Way’s current funded programs and initiatives, visit www.lcunitedway.org.

Residents invited to attend Livingston Planning Dept. Master Plan Workshop

Livingston County residents are invited to attend the 2025 Master Plan Workshop to help guide the development of the County’s new plan. The workshop will take place on May 29th from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the Livingston County Public Safety Complex at 1911 Tooley Road in Howell. RSVPs are required by May 25th via email to mhaglund@livgov.com.

This free event is open to all residents and will provide a brief overview of the Master Plan creation process, explain how residents can provide input, and give participants the opportunity to identify areas of the community that are positive or may need improvement. The May 29th workshop will be the Planning Department’s second Master Plan workshop scheduled this month. The first was held on May 1st and was quickly booked with more than 65 attendees.

There are two quick and easy ways all residents can take part in the Master Plan process. The first is the Map and Economic Survey available at https://milivcounty.gov/planning/livingston-county-2025-master-plan/surveys/. Here residents can use a map of the county to select areas they consider positive or in need of improvement, while the economic development part of the survey allows responders to rate the conditions of the county. The second opportunity is a Photo Voice Contest available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LivCoPhotoVoice.

Everyone is welcome to enter the contest by uploading and describing photos of a place that makes them feel proud or frustrated. There’s even a category for “Photographer’s Choice” so residents can share photos of special places within the community. Three photos will be selected at the end of the contest and with a $100 gift card for first place and a $50 gift card each for second and third place. When selecting photos to submit, the Department asks residents to please focus on places, not people, and to have fun and be creative! All photos and descriptions submitted may be used in the final 2025 Master Plan.

The Planning Department thanks the community for all of their interest and participation in the Plan. It is the public’s input that will help the team prepare an impactful document. Stay connected to the Plan’s progress and find quick links to the Map and Economic Survey and Photo Voice Contest by visiting https://milivcounty.gov/planning/livingston-county-2025-master-plan/.

Grad Gauntlet taking place at Fowlerville schools on May 30th

Fowlerville Community Schools and the surrounding community will join in and celebrate graduation with our seniors at the annual Grad Gauntlet.

On Thursday, May 30th all Fowlerville graduates will walk the Gauntlet! The Gauntlet is a graduate parade through all of the school buildings. The staff and students will be lining the halls to cheer on the grads! The parade starts around 10:15 a.m. at the high school.

We would like to invite parents and community members to come up and join in the celebration as the graduates walk across the parking lot from the high school to the Junior High. You can make signs, wave, clap etc. Our senior parents have some big surprises planned for that short stretch across the parking lot! All attendees must park in the bus parking lot between the High School and Junior High. Please respect that the high school is still conducting classes, DO NOT ENTER THE SCHOOL BUILDING. Hope to see you there!

Livingston Centre Historic Village holding window restoration workshop

The Livingston Centre Historic Village is offering an opportunity to learn about the restoration of older windows. A three-day, 20-hour workshop will be led by historic renovation expert/contractor Randy Klepinger and at no expense to those participating. All registration fees and necessary on-site materials will be provided by the Livingston Centre Historic Society.

This class will benefit anyone wanting to learn about renovating historic windows; those planning DIY projects on your own historic house, or contractors working with these structures. The project for the class is restoring the windows of the Coughran School at the Historic Village inside the Fowlerville Fairgrounds. There is no better way to learn about repairing/replacing your own windows than to have hands-on experience led by a knowledgeable expert.

The class is scheduled for August 5 - 7, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; lunch is included. Registration is open to eight students, please send an email stating your interest to LCHV2023@gmail.com. Accepted students must have completed lead certification in advance, as the project includes working with lead paint and leaded glass.

Reminder: Spring Cleanup continues at the Livingston Centre Historic Village Sunday, May 5th; 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Volunteers are needed to continue working in the gardens as well as spring cleaning inside the historic buildings. Community members can join the committee of the Historic Village to prepare for the summer season, ready to welcome guests visiting the Fowlerville Family Fairgrounds.

The Historic Village Board invites gardeners, all students wanting to meet service hour requirements, individuals needing community service hours, lovers of local history, supporters of the Historic Village, or anyone who simply wants some time outdoors preparing for spring.

The indoor cleanup will include dusting, sweeping/mopping, and window-washing while outdoor cleanup continues with weeding and planting garden beds, trimming hedges and trees, and cleaning the Historic building yards. Chips and water will be available for volunteers; however, BYO lunch. Volunteers are also asked to bring gloves, cleaning and garden tools, shovels, and yard waste bags if possible.

Please see Facebook/Livingston Centre Historical Village for more information. Questions may be sent to LCHV2023@gmail.com or by calling the Fowlerville Family Fair Office, 517-223-8186.

The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal organization of Catholic gentlemen engaged in helping children and families in need locally and throughout the world.

Donations being accepted for Grandma’s Attic Sale at fairgrounds

It is again time for the Livingston Centre Historic Village annual Grandma's Attic Sale. Once again, the members of the Historic Society ask for the support of the community.
