Alana June Lewis

    Alana June Lewis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away surrounded by her loving family on August 24, 2026.

    She was born on August 27, 1945, to Robert and Beverly Howell (Lange).

    Alana shared many years of love and companionship with her husband, Stan Lewis. The two were married on October 14, 1994, in Brighton.

    Alana was a devoted mother to her children: Michael Simonyi (Georgia), of Milford; Sandra Blair (Lenny), of St. Helen; Darchella Gullett (Robert), of Morrice; Damon Lewis of Redford; and Destiny Lewis of Milford. She was a proud grandmother to 19 grandchildren and a great-grandmother to 21 great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her world, and she especially treasured visits, phone calls, messages, and any opportunity to hear from and spend time with those she loved.

    Alana found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed trips to the casino, an evening cocktail, and her love of birds—especially the beauty of peacocks and cranes. She loved the water and could spend hours sitting on the beach, enjoying the peacefulness of the shoreline. She took great pride in caring for her plants and tending to her flower beds. She also enjoyed knitting and, most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Alana will be remembered for her infectious laughter and her love for a good time. Whether she was enjoying a drink, trying her luck at the casino, listening to music, or dancing along, Alana knew how to have fun and was always up for an adventure. She brought a playful spirit and a spark of excitement wherever she went, and her laughter and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed. The stories, memories, and good times she shared with those around her will be treasured for years to come.

    She is survived by her brother, Dan Howell (Cindy), and her sister, Linda Raley, along with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many loved ones who will carry her memory in their hearts.

    Alana was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Howell and Beverly Gucciardi (Lange); her husband, Stan Lewis; her great-grandchildren, Elijah Pash, Oaklei Simonyi and Gypsy Simonyi; and her son-in-law, Lenny Blair.

    Alana leaves behind a beautiful legacy of family, love, and cherished memories. She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

 Peggy Morgan

    Peggy Marie (Drayton) Morgan passed away peacefully at her home on August 24, 2026, at the age of 88. She was born at home, in Deerfield Twp, on January 19, 1938, to the late Wirt Lee Drayton and Gertrude Esther (Salmon) Drayton.

    She graduated from Hartland Consolidated Schools in 1956. On August 31, 1956, she married Carl Morgan at the First United Methodist Church, in Howell, MI. She worked for Citizens Insurance for one year and then devoted her time to raising her five children. After that, she went to work for Howell Cleaners.

    Peggy had many hobbies which she enjoyed all of them. Some of her hobbies included square dancing, going to Owosso to watch car racing, knitting, crocheting, word searches, and putting together puzzles.

    She is survived by her children Deborah (Ken) Ott, Mary Lou (Dean) Roberts, Bonnie (Kevin) Phibbs, and Trudy (Dwayne) Gross; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Carl Morgan; her son, Richard Morgan; her parents, Wirt and Gertrude Drayton; and her siblings Rex (Florence) Drayton and Dorothy (Robert) Merrill.

    A visitation was held on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 11:00am - 1:00pm, at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, MacDonald Chapel. 315 N. Michigan Ave., Howell. A funeral service began afterwards at 1:00pm. Interment was at Sanford Cemetery following the service.

    Memorial contributions can be made in Peggy’s name to Trinity Hospice.

 Stephen ‘Steve’ Perkins

    Stephen 'Steve' Grant Perkins, 83, of Fowlerville, passed away on the 25th of July 2026.

    Steve was born in Royal Oak on November 17th 1943. On September 28th 1963 he married Dorothy 'Dot' Mund and they have been married for 62 years. During their marriage they would go on to have their six kids: Steven (Michelle) Perkins, Dawn (Steve) Armstrong, Daniel Perkins, Joann Perkins, Laura (Patrick) Mitchell and Kerry (Dave) Clay. They have eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren whom they both love dearly.

    Steve worked at Novex Tool as a tool and die shop worker for twenty-nine years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working on his '60 Chevy Impala "Nervous Breakdown" named after his four daughters and spending time outside mowing the lawn.

    Steve is preceded in death by his father Glen, mother Ruth, brother Jim, and sister Joy.

 VINA Tailgate football-themed fundraiser returns on Oct. 8th

    VINA Community Dental Center invites the community to celebrate the annual VINA Tailgate fundraiser on Thursday, October 8, at Crystal Gardens Event Center in Howell. The event begins at 5:30 PM.

    As part of the tailgate festivities, attendees can enjoy a buffet dinner, cash bar, silent auction, raffles, games, a photo booth, and more. The VINA Tailgate is a football-themed fundraiser, and attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite team’s colors, apparel, or jersey. College, professional, or high school teams are all welcome.

    Over the years, the VINA Tailgate has become VINA’s largest and most significant fundraiser, helping provide essential dental care to community members who lack access to care. VINA does not receive state or federal funding and relies on the fundraiser to continue providing care to those in need.

    This year, VINA is seeing about a 55% increase in new patients compared to last year, highlighting a growing need for accessible dental care in the community.

    All proceeds from the event directly support VINA’s mission to provide free and low-cost dental care to low-income and underserved patients, including seniors and veterans. Every dollar raised makes a positive impact in the lives of those in need right here in Livingston County.

 Livingston Audubon Naturalists launch season with program on bluebirds

    Livingston Audubon Naturalists welcomes Adam Edmunds, the Livingston County Coordinator for the Michigan Bluebird Society and Laurel Zoet, Naturalist Educator as they reveal the fascinating world of Bluebirds.

    Come learn about bluebirds’ habits, diet, their natural nests and human built boxes. These lovely vibrant birds are delightful to behold, either at your backyard bird bath or along meadows and pastures throughout Michigan.

 Livingston County Literacy Coalition Announces 2nd Annual Trivia for Literacy Fundraiser on Oct. 10th

    The Livingston County Literacy Coalition (LCLC) invites the community to put their knowledge to the test for a great cause at its 2nd Annual Trivia for Literacy fundraiser on Saturday, October 10, from 4:30–7:00 p.m. at Faulkwood Golf Club in Howell.

    The evening will feature trivia hosted by Matt Eickhoff, chef-inspired food, a cash bar, and plenty of friendly competition — all while raising funds to support free adult literacy programs in Livingston County.

    Tickets are $30 per person, with special early-bird pricing of just $25 through Sept. 10. Community members are encouraged to purchase tickets early to take advantage of the discounted rate.

    Proceeds from Trivia for Literacy support LCLC’s work providing free literacy services to adults who live or work in Livingston County. LCLC programs include personalized one-on-one tutoring in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language (ESL), ESL conversation groups, volunteer support for LESA ESL classes, digital literacy programming for seniors, and workplace literacy initiatives.

    Nearly 8% of adults in Livingston County struggle with basic literacy, which can affect their ability to participate fully in the workforce, support their children’s education, navigate healthcare, and manage everyday tasks. LCLC works with adult learners to build the skills and confidence they need to achieve greater independence and reach their personal and professional goals.

    Literacy can have an impact far beyond the individual learner. Stronger literacy skills can help adults gain meaningful employment, support their children’s academic success, navigate the healthcare system, and participate more fully in their communities.

    LCLC’s work is made possible by dedicated volunteers and community partners. Trained volunteer tutors provide individualized support based on each learner’s needs and goals, while community partnerships help LCLC provide accessible learning opportunities throughout Livingston County.

 4th Annual ‘Never Forget Trail 5K’ to be held at Fillmore Park on Sept. 12th

    Livingston County Veteran Services and Howell Recreation present the fourth annual 9/11 “Never Forget 5K Trail Run/Walk” on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 9am. Join us at Fillmore County Park as we remember those who lost their lives that day, as well as our military veterans and first responders who went into harm’s way as a result of the attack.

    This trail is not stroller-friendly and is not paved. All participants will receive a finisher medal. A portion of the proceeds will be used to purchase AEDs for local American Legion and VFW posts.

    As much as we love your furry friends, we are kindly requesting that only service dogs join us.

Fowlerville Area Historic Society making plans for upcoming Fall Fest

    The Fowlerville Area Historic Society is deep into the planning of the 2026 Fall Fest. This annual event benefits the Livingston Centre Historic Village. There is still room for vendors and sponsors to apply. Volunteers are needed in most areas as well. Use the QR code for further information. The monthly meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. at the Fowlerville Library on Thursday, Sept. 3. The agenda will include elements of the Fall Fest that need final planning. The committee is still accepting vendors and sponsors. The monthly meeting of the LCHV will follow at 7:00 p.m.

    In the midst of all the activities, members are taking the opportunity to remember someone very dedicated to the Historic Village. Both committees were saddened to learn of the loss of a long time member of the Livingston Centre Historic Society, Ms. Cindy Denby. The committees extend sincere condolences to Cindy's family and friends. The family is asking for donations to the LCHV in lieu of flowers. All committee members are most grateful. Her dedication and devotion to area history will remain an inspiration to all area residents for years to come. The result of her years of hard work will remain a tangible legacy to future generations.

    Both the committees of the FAHS and the LCHV are partnering with the Open Class Department of the Fowlerville Family Fair. They will together host a fundraising Craft Swap at the Fowlerville Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 12.

 Cinderella’s Closet returns to help local students shine at Homecoming

    Homecoming season is right around the corner, and LACASA is once again opening the doors to Cinderella’s Closet, a pop-up boutique where local high school students can find stylish, gently loved formalwear at prices families can afford.

    From September 17–20, students can shop $25 gowns, dresses, and suits, along with deeply discounted shoes and accessories to complete their Homecoming look. Every purchase also supports LACASA’s vital services for survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual violence.

    More than a shopping event, Cinderella’s Closet creates a welcoming and uplifting experience where students are surrounded by encouraging messages, guidance for making healthy choices, and supportive adults who want every student to feel confident and celebrated.

    “In a time when families continue to feel the strain of rising costs, Cinderella’s Closet helps ensure that Homecoming can be a special experience without becoming a financial burden,” said LACASA President and CEO Bobette Schrandt. “Every student deserves the opportunity to feel confident and celebrated. When students shop at Cinderella’s Closet, they’re not only finding something they love to wear - they’re also helping support hope and healing for children and families in our community.”

    Donations are still needed to help stock Cinderella’s Closet. LACASA is especially in need of short dresses suitable for Homecoming, as well as other gently loved formalwear, shoes, and accessories. Community members can drop off donations at LACASA Collection’s Donation Station Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. or contact Snedicor’s Green Earth Cleaners for pickup and cleaning services. Donated formalwear is given a second life, helping make Homecoming more affordable for local students while reducing textile waste.

    Cinderella’s Closet is open to high school students only, and a valid student ID is required. A limited number of formalwear scholarships are available; students may inquire with staff or volunteers on site.

    This year’s Homecoming pop-up boutique will be located at Kensington Valley Outlets, in a storefront just down from LACASA Collection, next to the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Outlet. As an added bonus, shoppers will receive a 25% off coupon for shoes and accessories at LACASA Collection to complete their look.

    Volunteers are still needed to help set up, staff, and take down the boutique. Those interested can email Volunteering@lacasacenter.org.

 Cynthia “Cindy” Denby

Fowlerville Michigan

    Cynthia “Cindy” Denby, a devoted wife and mother, beloved grandmother, cherished sister and aunt, and dedicated community leader, passed away on August 18, 2026, at the age of 70.

    Cindy was born on December 11, 1955 in Howell, MI. She lived a life defined by love, service, strength, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to her family and the community she called home. At the heart of Cindy’s life was her family, and at her side for 50 years was the love of her life, Wayne “Fred” Denby. They were married on the first day of spring, March 20, 1976. They built a beautiful life together with their two children, Angela and Brandon.

    Family was the center of her world and her greatest source of pride and joy. She was a constant source of love, encouragement, wisdom, and strength. She was always showing up when she was needed and putting the people she loved ahead of herself. Cindy hosted countless family events with the level of detail of an event planner. She had a passion for many crafts, especially knitting and quilting. She gifted handmade blankets at almost every baby shower she attended. She loved her flower gardens and spent time tending to them every year. Cindy enjoyed card games with family, celebrated every holiday, and she was always in the mood to watch a game show.

    Cindy had a lifelong goal of becoming a Grandmother to create a special connection like the one she experienced as a child with her Grandmother. She found great joy with her five grandchildren, attending football games, dance recitals, music performances, award presentations, teaching them to knit, playing cards, reading stories, finding that perfect gift. She was an amazing gift-giver, so thoughtful. Every moment was precious to her, and she always showed up for them. Public service was an important part of Cindy’s life, and for decades she dedicated herself to serving her community and the people of Livingston County. Cindy began her years of elected public service close to home in Fowlerville, Michigan, serving eight years as Handy Township Clerk and eight years as Handy Township Supervisor. She also spent 20 years working in the legislative office, including time as a legislative aide for elected officials and causes she deeply believed in. Cindy was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, serving as a Michigan State Representative from 2009 through 2014. She had a reputation with constituents for answering the call and following through with the solution.

    Cindy believed deeply in the people she represented and in the responsibility that came with being entrusted to serve them. She always wanted to do things the right way. Cindy fought for what she believed in with kindness and positivity, but she was a fierce competitor. If there was a day left in a campaign, there was time to visit a few more doors. She was always aware that every vote counted.

    Cindy leaves behind her loving husband, Wayne “Fred” Denby; her children, Brandon Denby (Shelby) and Angela Belanger (Dan); her brother, Jim Keesler (Patti); and her treasured grandchildren, Adrienne Denby, Colton Denby, Ariella Denby, Adeline Denby, and Alison Belanger.

    She also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews, Mitch Keesler (Kristina), Deanne Wizner (Ryan), Bill Rivera, and Nick Kassouf (Amber), as well as nine great-nieces and great-nephews who were part of the family she held so dear.

    Cindy was preceded in death by her parents, Charles D. Keesler, Barbara J. Keesler, and sister, Jenny Keesler.

    After 50 years of marriage and decades of public service, Cindy leaves behind a legacy far greater than the offices she held or the accomplishments she achieved. Her life is measured by the family she loved, the people she touched, and the difference she made in the lives of others.

    She will be profoundly missed and forever loved.

    Her Farewell… Cindy’s family and friends will gather 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Monday, August 24, 2026 at Borek Jennings Funeral Home in Fowlerville, Michigan. Gathering will continue on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, followed immediately by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM.     Lawrence J. “Larry” Machleit, 77, of Plum Branch, SC, died Monday, August 17, 2026, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, SC. He was born December 6, 1948 in Detroit, MI to the late Vernon and Eva Gross Machleit. Larry was twice married, first to the late Charlene M. Machleit and second to Linda Adle Machleit.

    He was a graduate of the Design School in Detroit, MI, launching a remarkable career as a design engineer with General Motors and retiring after 44 years of dedicated service. Following retirement, he and his wife relocated to Plum Branch, SC where he continued to share his skills and passion, working with CrawlSpaceRepair.com, LLC in Greenwood, SC.

    Deeply rooted in his faith, Larry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Abbeville, SC. As a 3rd Order Franciscan, he answered the call to serve others and uphold the values of humility, compassion, and selflessness. Larry was also involved in the Men’s Club at Sacred Heart and a dedicated participant in the His Merciful Heart Prayer Group. His commitment to these organizations reflected a life rooted in service, compassion, and spiritual enrichment.

    Larry found great joy in the companionship of his cherished pet, Emma – a source of great comfort and affection.

    He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Linda; two children, Erric Machleit (Heather) of Howell, MI and Renae Soeder (Ron) of Milan, MI; three step-children, Talia Wiley, Brian Ashley and Trey Brown; two brothers, Vernon ‘Buz’ Machleit (Rose Marie) of Chapel Hill, TN and Michael Machleit (Denice) of Roscommon, MI; five grandchildren, Samantha Rye (Nicholas), Eva Marie Church Drobet (Ryan), Brook Machleit, Michael Machleit and Paige Machleit (Jason); one step-grandchild, Cora Sangster; six great-grandchildren, Delaney, Jayleen, Dennis, Jaylin, Jeorge and Nicholas; and his beloved fur baby, Emma.

    The family will receive friends 4:00PM – 5:30PM, Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at Harris Funeral Home, 302 N. Main Street, Abbeville, SC with a Rosary beginning at 4:00PM. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 11:00AM, Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 206 N. Main Street, Abbeville, SC with Rev. Father Jacob Joseph officiating. A private inurnment will be in the Columbarium at Long Cane Cemetery.

 Two candidates file for Fowlerville Village President office

    With longtime incumbent Carol Hill not seeking another term, two candidates have filed for the Fowlerville Village President office. They are council trustee and current Village pro temp Kathryn Heath and planning commission member Randy Showerman.

    The term of office is two years.

    There are also three seats on the Village council up for election and three candidates have filed for those seats. They include incumbent James Mayhew and newcomers Mary K. Gallagher nd Brent Kilpela.

    Longtime council trustee Mary Helfmann moved from the village and so will not be able to run again, while Jamey Hardenbrook did not seek re-election.

    The Village offices will be on the November General Election Non-Partisan Ballot.

 Five candidates file for three seats on Fowlerville Board of Education

    Five candidates have filed for the three seats on the Fowlerville Board of Education that will be on the November General Election Non-Partisan ballot. Each of the seats is for a four-year term.

    Those filing for office include incumbents John Belcher and Diana Dombrowski and newcomers Brandon Mohs, Karen Phau, and Jason Reed.

    The third incumbent, Danielle DeVries, did not seek another term on the board. The top three vote-getters will be elected to the three open seats. There are seven members on the board.

 ‘May the Glow Be With You’ 5K fundraiser brings Galactic fun to Fowlerville on Sept. 19th 

    Calling all rebels, Jedi, glow warriors, and community heroes! Torch180 invites runners, walkers, families, and Star Wars fans of every age to join the adventure at the ‘May the Glow Be With You’ 5K, a one-of-a-kind glow-themed fundraising event taking place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Fowlerville. 

    More than just a race, the ‘May the Glow Be With You’ 5K is an evening of community, creativity, and purpose designed to raise funds and awareness for Torch180's mission while bringing people together for an unforgettable night under the stars. 

    Participants can choose their own path through the galaxy by running, walking, or marching the illuminated 5K route. Families with young adventurers can participate in a 1-Mile Fun Run, while supporters unable to attend in person can join the mission through a Virtual Glow 5K from anywhere in the universe. 

    "This event is about more than crossing a finish line," said a Torch180 representative. "It's about bringing people together to shine a light on hope, opportunity, and community support. Whether you come dressed as your favorite character, form a team with friends, or volunteer to help, every participant plays a role in helping our mission grow stronger." 

    The event encourages community involvement in a variety of ways: 

        • Run, Walk, or March with the Rebellion in the Glow 5K 

        • Lead Your Squadron by forming a fundraising team 

        • Bring Young Padawans to the family-friendly 1-Mile Fun Run 

        • Take the Mission Virtual by participating from anywhere 

        • Host a Rebel Glow Station to cheer on participants along the course 

        • Become a Glow Trooper by volunteering before or during the event 

        • Arrive in Cosplay and Celebrate the Fandom with fellow Star Wars enthusiasts

 Williamston Summer Concert Series ends season on Aug. 20 with ‘Horizon’

    The Williamston Summer Concert Series ends its season this Thursday, August 20th with ‘Horizon’ from the Great Lakes Naval Station, North Chicago, Illinois. The concert is 7-9pm at McCormick Park.

    ‘Horizon’ is a high-energy, seven-piece popular music group serving as musical ambassadors throughout the Midwest. Composed of active-duty sailors, the ensemble performs rock, pop, R&B, country, funk, and jazz for community outreach.

    ‘Horizon’ is presented by the Williamston Area Beautification Fund and sponsored by Tailgators. Concessions by the Williamston Area Senior Center. Adult refreshment can be purchased at any of four downtown restaurants.

    The 2026 concerts patrons included Williamston Rotary, Custom Built Design & Remodelling, Granger Waste Services and Xfinity/Comcast.

 State veterinarian reminds animal owners to make vaccinations a priority

    Late summer is a time for road trips, camping, outdoor adventures and plenty of time with family, friends and companion animals. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is reminding owners to ensure their animals are up to date on vaccinations as summertime activities heighten the risk of exposure to contagious diseases.

    "Spending time outside brings risks of exposure to diseases through wildlife, other animals, ticks, mosquitoes and environmental sources of pathogens," said State Veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM.

    “As you work with your veterinarian to provide the best care for your animals, be sure to discuss vaccine recommendations to protect your animals from diseases they may encounter in the coming months.”

    Animal vaccinations are a cornerstone of preventive veterinary care and offer many important benefits, including that they:

        · Help shield pets from a range of contagious and potentially                life-threatening diseases, such as rabies.

        · Reduce the likelihood of expensive treatments for illnesses                that can be prevented.

        · Contribute to a healthier world by protecting other animals -              and in some cases, people from contagion.

        · Are required by many animal boarding, grooming and training            facilities, as well as for travel to other states or countries.

    Before heading out for summer adventures, owners can help protect their animals with the following steps:

        · Check vaccination records. Make sure your animals are                     current on recommended vaccines and ask a veterinarian                     whether any boosters are due. Michigan law requires dogs to               be currently vaccinated against rabies. Dogs can also be                       vaccinated against serious diseases such as distemper,                       parvovirus, adenovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis.

              For cats, key vaccines include those for rabies, feline                       leukemia, panleukopenia, herpes virus and calicivirus.

        · Vaccinations aren’t just for cats and dogs. Horses, rabbits,              ferrets and other animals also need vaccinations appropriate              for their species.                                                                                       Horses benefit from vaccinations for rabies, West Nile virus,            eastern and western equine encephalitis, as well as tetanus.                  Rabbits should be vaccinated against rabbit hemorrhagic                    disease. Michigan law requires ferrets to be currently                          vaccinated against rabies.

        · Consider your pet’s age and lifestyle. An animal that hikes,              camps, boards, attends daycare or regularly interacts with                    other animals may have a higher risk of exposure to                            contagious diseases.  Also, make especially sure to keep                      young animals on a vaccine schedule. Developing immune                  systems need additional protection.

        · Plan ahead for travel. Michigan law requires ferrets, dogs                and some cats to have a current rabies vaccination before they            can be imported. Other vaccinations may be required to come            to Michigan or travel to other states or countries, depending               on the situation. View Michigan’s import requirements or                   contact the state animal health official of where you’re going             to determine requirements for movement and paperwork.

      · Keep records handy. Store vaccination records where they can          be easily accessed, particularly when you travel or seek                      emergency veterinary care.

 Fowlerville Fairgrounds to host afternoon of harness rcing on Aug. 27th

    The Fowlerville Fairgrounds will host an afternoon of harness racing on Thursday, August 27th. Post time will be at 12 noon. Admissionis free to both the grounds and grandstand.

    The race meet is for two and three-year old colt and filly trotters and pacers in the MHHA Blue Circuit, with eight divisions.

 Cole Michael Tomlin

    It is with deepest sorrow that his loved ones announce that Cole Michael Tomlin journeyed beyond the veil on August 2nd, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, love, and legendary mischief.

    Cole was born in Fowlerville, Michigan to Marvin Tomlin Jr. and Nicole Tomlin on June 3, 2000 and most recently resided in Wixom, MI. Cole is survived by his parents, Nicole Tomlin and Marvin (Stacy) Tomlin Jr.; his siblings Garrett (Morgan) Tomlin, Megan (Brent) Morris, and stepsister Raven Hodgins; his niblings, Cora and Frederick Morris; his grandmother, Susan Rich; along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He also leaves behind his beloved feline, Beatrice. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Jean and Marvin Tomlin Sr. and Alan Rich.

    During the early years of Cole’s family campaign, he was in cub scouts and was a member of the County Line Rebels 4-H Club, showing animals and creative projects at the Fowlerville Fair-- his greatest accomplishments being Grand Champion Beef Steer in 2013 and Best Still Exhibit in 2014 with his tractor-part scarecrow. He attended Fowlerville Schools, graduating in 2018. Throughout his school years, Cole acted in several productions put on by the high school theater including “You Can’t Take it With You”, “Radium Girls”, and “39 Steps”. Like your typical bard, he also loved music throughout his life: playing trombone and tuba in the school band and finding joy in listening to the radio, top hits as well as off-the-wall indie artists.

    Cole was most recently employed by Pirtek USA in Wixom, MI and in his downtime enjoyed playing disc golf or online games with his friends--caring more about sharing laughter than whatever the score was. Dungeons and Dragons was a great love of his, creating and running epic campaigns as Dungeonmaster or playing a hobbit bard in the adventuring party. Cole also loved to tinker and craft, creating silly computer art to make him and his friends laugh--in 2025 he created a piece of art every single day.

    Everything about Cole was big: his heart, his mind, his laugh, his love, his hugs, (and his shoes)… His personality was larger than life and he played the comedic bard wherever he was--making good-natured jabs both with words and his finger in your ribs. He leaves an even bigger hole in his loved ones lives but we know his great big belly laughs resonate across the realms.

    A celebration of Cole’s life will take place on August 23rd from 2-5pm (open house style) at Aberrant Ales, 219 W. Grand River Ave, Howell, MI. We invite fellow adventurers, family, and friends to share stories and treasured memories as we honor a life well played.

    In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to your local animal shelter, nature center, or to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in his honor. You may also share the suicide hotline: 988 for calls and 741-741 for text.

 Merna Mackenzie

    Merna Mackenzie, age 91, of Portage, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Heritage House in Portage.

    Merna was born on October 15, 1934, to Harry and Omadell Wagner. She grew up in Fowlerville, Michigan, where she graduated from Fowlerville High School.

    On August 22, 1958, she married the love of her life, Virgil Mackenzie, in Fowlerville, Michigan. Throughout her working years, Merna was employed as a jeweler's assistant and later worked as a school cook, where she enjoyed serving others.

    Merna found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved tending to her garden, spending time reading, taking trips with her sisters, and doting on her beloved little dog, Ernie.

    She is survived by her daughter Debra Mackenzie and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil; siblings Lorene Morgan, Phillys Lillard, James Wagner, Joan Steel, Patricia Bowers, John Wagner, Wanda Rathbun and Carolyn Young.

    A special thank you to the staff at Heritage House in Portage for their compassionate care of Merna, Portage EMS, and Grasse Funeral Service. Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society in honor of Merna.

    A Celebration of Life was held Wednesday, August 5, 2026 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Grasse Funeral Home in Pardeeville. Online condolences may be made at www.grassefs.com. Grasse Funeral Service in Pardeeville is serving the family.

 R&B Soul music to be performed at Williamston Concert Series Aug. 13th

R&B Soul comes to the Williamston Concert Series this Thursday, August 13th, with the fabulous Elements of Soul.

Described as "The best "R&B/Funk" band in Mid-Michigan, they will make everyone "get up and dance." Several in the band were formally a part of Tony Thompson & Friends, who regularly played solo at Zynda's and with his full band at McCormick Park and area music festivals. Tony passed away this past year; the band re-grouped and are now a favorite on the summer concert circuit.

The concert is sponsored by Independent Bank and Zynda's. Concessions by the Williamston Area Senior Center.

 St.Agnes Parish hosting trip to Firekeepers Casino on Sept. 16th

    St. Agnes Parish is hosting a trip to Firekeepers Casino in Battle Creek on Wednesday, Sept, 16. We will be offering a full hot breakfast at 9:00am, at St. Agnes Church, 855 E Grand River Avenue, Fowlerville, in the Lothamer Parish Center (LPC) prior to departing at 10:00am,.

    The cost is $60 and includes round trip bus transportation, $20 in free slot play and $5 to use towards dining, slot play or in the gift shop. Returning guests who bring their Red Hot Rewards Club card will get credits and points added to their existing card. Guests need to bring a valid ID to receive the group package. Those without Red Hot Rewards Cards will be issued them prior to entering the casino.

    A Blue Lakes Charter Motorcoach will leave the St. Agnes Church parking lot at 10:00am. Anticipated arrival time back in Fowlerville is 5:30pm.  Livingston County Health Department to hold ‘Ready, Set, School!’ on Saturday, August 15th

    Livingston County Health Department (LCHD) is excited to host Ready, Set, School!, a free family-friendly event designed to help children ages 0-6 gear up for a healthy start to the school year. Ready, Set, School! gives families the opportunity to connect with free services, hands‐on learning, and trusted community resources. The event will take place on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at 2|42 Community Church, located at 7526 Grand River Ave. in Brighton. The event is free, and no registration is necessary.

    Kids ages 0-6 are still developing awareness and decision-making skills. Learning how to care for their bodies, recognize unsafe situations, and make healthy choices builds confidence and reduces preventable injuries. When children understand these concepts early, they carry those skills with them into school and everyday life. “Early childhood is a time when lifelong habits begin to form, that’s why learning opportunities like this are so important,” said Courtney Rynkiewicz, Health Promotion Coordinator for LCHD.

Event Highlights

    At the event, families can take advantage of free dental and vision screenings, both required for kindergarten entry. These services help identify potential concerns early, supporting children’s health and readiness for school.

    The University of Michigan’s Pop‐up Safety Town will also be on-site to offer hands‐on injury‐prevention education. This includes pedestrian safety, medication safety, and dog bite prevention. Safety Town will distribute free helmets (while supplies last) to help keep kids safe during biking and other wheeled activities.

    A LETS bus will be on site for children to explore, giving them a chance to see the inside of a bus and learn about safe riding practices.

    Finally, community partners will host a variety of interactive booths featuring resources on health, education, physical activity, and more. Families can also enjoy free snacks, children’s books, yard games, and other fun experiences throughout the event.
