Livingston County Genealogical Society to meet Dec. 7th via zoom

The Livingston County Genealogical Society will meet via zoom on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. - Patricia Yokum - "Polish Immigrants and the Ellis Island Database."

Patricia B. Yokum is a librarian emerita at the University of Michigan. A native of New York, she earned a B.A. from Binghamton University, and a M.A. and A.M.L.S. from the University of Michigan. Her interest in family history dates from her childhood, fostered by stories of her grandparents immigration from Poland.

Between 1870 and 1914, well over two million Poles came to America and settled largely in the northern states where work and land were plentiful. Most Poles came through Ellis Island, but finding them in the Ellis Island database can be difficult. Language, history and record handling are all factors which can thwart our searches. In this talk we'll take a look at how these factors function, how they can cause information to be hidden and, most importantly, how we can work around such snags to find the immigrants we're researching. Strategies in the talk will be of help in researching other ethnic groups in this database as well.

(This speaker had been scheduled for the October meeting but cancelled due to an illness.)

A link to this virtual meeting may be found on our Facebook page for the Livingston County Genealogical Society a few days before the Dec. 7th meeting. All are welcome.

Livingston County Catholic Charities holding Christmas Blessing Project

Livingston County Catholic Charities (LCCC) along with local businesses, churches, organizations, schools and local community members are looking forward to providing much needed basic needs items, Christmas cheer and friendly visits to local home-bound and low-income seniors through this year’s Christmas Blessing Project. This project is a tremendous undertaking each year in our community, providing love, help, and hope to vulnerable and home-bound county seniors.

Last year’s Christmas Blessing Project provided food boxes, cleaning products, hygiene items, paper products aan other items to 280 county seniors and their families. LCCC plans to serve a record 300 county seniors this upcoming Christmas Season.

The winter months are a difficult time of year for our vulnerable seniors who have to contend with higher utility costs that affect their ability to purchase food or life-saving medications on their limited incomes. We often hear, too, that they feel lonely and isolated during this time of year and are so overjoyed when they receive their special Christmas delivery and cheerful visits.

Livingston County Catholic Charities (LCCC) senior outreach staff work with local seniors throughout the year to connect to them to critical resources and services to help them remain independent in their homes as long as safely possible. Many recipients of the Christmas Blessing Project are clients at LCCC; however, this annual program is open to any county senior in need. This project is truly a community-wide effort.

The Board and co-workers at LCCC are grateful for the outpouring of love and generosity thus far. The support we have received thus far is truly heartwarming and just signifies the incredible county we live in.This project is far from complete however, LCCC is seeking volunteers to assist with both packing and delivering the Christmas Blessing Boxes. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions about the project, please contact Ryan Skomial at ryan@livingstoncc.org

We thank our 2023 Senior Christmas Blessings Project sponsors The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, The Scotta Family, Weingartz, Livingston County Sunrise Rotary, St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kem Krest, Meijer, Dan Hall Pinckney Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, Knights of Columbus Council #2659, Knights of Columbus Council #7304, Griffith Realty, In Memory of Marlene Newman, The Core Institute, Rhetech, Quality Care of Howell and the many other wonderful partners hosting collections for this project.

 Charles Albert Rhodes

Charles Albert Rhodes, 77 of Webberville, Michigan, passed away on November 14, 2023.

Charles, fondly known as Chuck, was born to Harry and Elizabeth Rhodes on June 2, 1946 in Coldwater, Michigan. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather who would go out of his way to help others. Chuck graduated from high school in Webberville, Michigan and enlisted in the Navy shortly after. During this time he met his loving wife of 53 years, whom he proposed to the first time he met her. They were later married while he was stationed in Puerto Rico and started a family after returning home. Chuck worked at Michigan State University as a PipeFitter/Welder and retired after 30 years of service.

Chuck is survived by his wife Marie and three sons Chuck, Tony (Danielle), Jason (Melissa) and grandchildren Hunter, Gage, Dylan, Kole and Isabella. He is also survived by his sister Marry Raymond and brothers Harry, John and Mike.

Chuck was known for loving the outdoors. He spent most of his time during the summer at his cottage in Traverse City, Michigan where he enjoyed friends, family and fishing. When fall would come around he would begin prepping for hunting and trapping seasons. Both were a passion of his and he passed that passion down to his children. In the winter he would enjoy cutting wood to heat his home, ice fishing and watching the grandkids play basketball, but what he loved most of all was being able to help someone that needed it. If he had something that he thought would make your life better, he would give it to you, whether it was a tool, his labor, knowledge or his love he would give it and needed nothing in return. So please help us celebrate the beautiful and blessed life of Chuck Rhodes.

The Rhodes Family hosted a funeral service on Friday, November 17th, 2023 the Herrmann Funeral Home in Fowlerville. Viewing was 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Service began at 12:00 PM. . Burial followed at Bell Oak Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Hive Youth & Teen Center holding Walkathon Fundraiser on  Dec. 2nd

The kids at the Hive Youth & Teen Center are making it their mission to raise $20,000 for The Hive Youth & Teen Center and they're kicking everything off with our first-ever Walkathon Fundraiser on December 2nd at the Oceola Community Center. The Hive Teen Center is a place where teens can come to gather with friends, interact with adults on relatively equal footing, gain recognition for their efforts and skills, and make choices about what they will do and how they will do it, all in a place that is teen-driven!

Our teens will be walking all night long to raise funds for the center and we have entertainment and activities planned the entire evening including a StarSlam, a blockbuster wrestling event put on by Combat 1 Wrestling, a "Pros vs. Joes Chili Cook Off", a Super Smash Brothers Tournament and so much more!

The event is open to the public! Community members are invited to attend to help cheer our kids on. If you want to donate to the cause, both one-time and per mile pledges go a long way to helping our teens reach their goal and can be submitted online via the link below.
