‘Free’ Scrap Tire Collection being offered to county resident on July 8
    A FREE scrap tire collection for Livingston County residents to responsibly dispose of car and light truck tires will be held by reservation only on Saturday, July 8, from 9 am to 1 pm. This event is sponsored by a grant from the MDEQ (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) and is coordinated by the Solid Waste Program within the Livingston County Drain Commissioner’s office. Per State regulations, there is a limit of 10 tires per resident address. Details are on the website www.livgov.com/dpw.
    The location of the collection in Howell will be given once a required reservation is received. CALL 517-546-0040 or SEND e-mail TO solidwaste@livgov.com. Reservation information must include: name, resident’s township/city/village, phone number, address, the number of tires on rims, and the number of tires not on rims. The total number of tires cannot be more than 10 per resident address/reservation. Space is limited, so please give 48-hour notice if you cannot use your reservation. 
    Only tires from Livingston County residents with reservations will be accepted. If you have more than 10 passenger/light truck tires, or if you have larger tires (tractor, semi-tractor/trailer, etc.), contact the Drain Commissioner’s office for information at 517-546-0040.
      
James C. Roberts
   James C. Roberts, age 76 and lifetime resident of the Fowlerville area, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, June 20, 2017.  He was born June 8, 1941 in Fowlerville to Clemence G. and Vivian June (Smith) Roberts.  Beloved husband of Charlotte I. (Witt) Roberts whom he married July 2, 1966 in Howell, MI.  Loving father of Kimberly Holbrook of Fowlerville, Sherri (Tracy) Dickens of Greenbrier, Tennessee and Christine (Derek) Krueger of Williamston.  Grandfather of James, Jason, Jordan, Mercedes, Melisa and Hanna; great-grandfather of Jameson and Olivia.  Also survived by siblings, Danny (Sharon) Roberts, Scarlet Roberts and Wayne (Veronica) Roberts.  
     James attended Fowlerville High School.  He served in the U.S. Army as a SP4 and completed his G.E.D.   He worked for Reuland Electric Company, then XLO in Howell and retired from General Motors Fisher Body in Lansing in 2003.  James enjoyed hunting, traveling, woodworking, singing in the church choir and serving on the Church Council.  He umpired and coached softball leagues.  He was an avid Michigan State football fan.  He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  
     James was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, 132 Benjamin Street, Fowlerville where services were held Saturday, July 24, at 12:00 noon (visitation from 10-12 p.m.) with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.  Visitation also took place on Friday, July 23, at MacDonald’s Funeral Home, Howell. Livingston County Parkinson’s Support Group to meet this Tuesday in Howell
    The Livingston County Parkinson's Support Group will meet this Tuesday, June 27,at 4 p.m. in Community Room 2 of St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital, 620 Byron Road, Howell. Oak Grove United Methodist Church to host annual 4th of July Breakfast 
    The Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 6686 Oak Grove Road (4 miles north of M-59) is hosting their annual 4th of July Breakfast on Tuesday, July 4th, from 7:30-9:30am. Come enjoy pancakes with toppings, eggs, sausage & fruit, all for a free-will donation. You can enjoy music by the Michigan Troubadour while you eat. Dansville Community Center to hold Euchre Night on July 1 & 15
    Do you like to play Euchre? The Dansville Community Center at 1317 Mason Street in Dansville will be having Euchre Night on Saturday, July 1 & 15 starting at 7pm. A donation of $5 per person is asked to help pay for expenses for the night. Prizes for high score, low score, and most lone hands will be awarded. Beginners are welcome. ‘Concerts at the Courthouse start this Friday with show at Howell venue
   A variety of local area musicians take center stage every Friday night throughout the summer on the lawn of the Historic Howell Courthouse as ‘Concerts at the Courthouse, begins its 19th season. This always popular program is a free series of concerts presented by the Livingston Arts Council, featuring rock, folk and blues entertainment at an outdoor family (and pet)-friendly venue. Pack a blanket or chair, and bring a snack or eat at one of Howell’s many downtown restaurants before enjoying the evening’s entertainment!
   This year’s series begins this Friday, June 30, from 7-9 p.m. with Magic Bus, a psychedelic rock tribute to the Woodstock era. If you are too young to remember that magical time, you can now be transported back there by taking a ride with the “Magic Bus.” Their incredible musical abilities and authentic look will transcend the modern and jet you back to the Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco in 1967 - a time of musical and creative energy that has never been equaled before or since. 
   The Concerts at the Courthouse program runs from June 30th – August 25th. In the event of inclement weather, concerts may be cancelled – listen to WHMI 93.5 for updates. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Applications now available for  ‘Homemaker of the Year’ Contest
    The Fowlerville Family Fair will soon be here and the deadline is nearing for getting your entries in for Open Class judging. Those doing so can also enter the Livingston County ‘Homemaker of the Year’ Contest.
    This contest is open to all county residents, ages 18 and older. Contestants, however, must enter and show in five of the nine Open Class categories that are judged at the fair: Baked Goods, Floriculture, Photography, Canned Goods, Gardening, Sewing, Crafts, Needlecrafts, and Painting.
   In addition, a contestant must enter in Department 99, Section 241, Class 999- Homemaker of the Year. Note: There is a $10 fee to enter Open Class exhibits. All Open Class entries are due by July 1, 2017.
   ‘Homemaker of the Year’ applicants must provide a completed application, a photo of themselves, and their 2017 Open Class entry form. Deadline for entering the Homemaker Contest is July 20, 2017.

   Since homemakers often have either fulltime homemaking careers or  combine them with a job, each entry is required to write an essay and reflect on how you cope with some of the challenges of our complex and rapidly-changing world. Please include an answer to the following questions in your essay:
    --What are some aspects of homemaking that you enjoy?
    --Do you take time for yourself? How do you use this time?
    --What are the two most important values that you want to pass on to future generations?
      Also, explain the importance of the Fowlerville Family Fair to the community and include details on your volunteer participation and any involvement in social organizations, school, church and community. Also list any leadership positions you now have or have held.
   The winner will be the contestant who earns the most points: 25 points for written essay, 100 points for interview with the judges, 25 points for ribbon values—1st place 5 points, 2nd place 4 points, and 3rd place 3 points.
   Each contestant will be interviewed on Sunday, July 23. You will receive a call as to the time and place for your interview. The winner will be announced during the ‘Family Kickoff’ Program on Monday, July 24, being held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Finlan Gazebo.
Area students receive degrees from Western Michigan University
   Two Fowlerville students and a Webberville student received their undergraduate degrees during the Spring Commencement Exercises at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, held on April 29.
   From Fowlerville are Trevor J. Tersigni with a Bachelor Science in Nursing Degree, and Jake Michael Tholen with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hydrogeology. Both graduated Magna Cum Laude.
   From Webberville is Trenton Hawley with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management.
Janet (Cameron) Henrich
     Janet (Cameron) Heinrich, age 77, of Fowlerville, MI went to be with her "Big Man" on the morning of Sunday, June 11, 2017. She was married to Ralph Heinrich, Sr. in 1959 and together they had three children: Ralph Heinrich (Cammie), Julie Arnold (Doug), and Mark Heinrich (Susan).   
     She was preceded in death by her parents: Lyle & Ella Jean, sister & brother in-law: Bea & Daniel Nygren, brother in-law: John Howe, in-laws: Harold & Velma Heinrich, and dear friends and family. Janet will be loved and remembered by her seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and family and friends who she lived for throughout her life. 
    The funeral service was held at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at Hermann Funeral Home in Fowlerville. Barbara Ann Dolan
   Barbara Ann Dolan (Dickson) age 73 of Fowlerville, Michigan, passed away on June 9, 2017. 
   The funeral service was held at 10 am June 14, 2017 at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Visitation took place at 2pm – 4 pm and 6 pm – 8 pm at Herrmann Funeral Home, Fowlerville Michigan on June 13. Burial immediately followed the funeral services at Mt Olivet Cemetery. 
    Barbara was born in Arkansas on December 19, 1943. She graduated from Bentley High School in Livonia. Barbara was married to Henry Dolan on November 17, 1962. They were married 54 years. 
     Barbara worked at for Citizens Insurance Company for 31 years. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and spending time with her family. 
   Barbara is survived by her husband Henry, her daughters: Jean (Kurt) Christenson, Judi Dolan, Carol (Nelson) Root, her grandchildren: Zak Richardson, Jenna Christenson, Jeremy Christenson, Brett Kennedy, Holly Campbell, Heather Ziegman and her 6 great grandchildren and other family and friends.

Longtime FHS teacher named as new boys varsity basketball coach
   Longtime Fowlerville teacher Jim Jonas has been named as the new boys varsity basketball coach. Jonas takes over for Fred Hackett who served 15 years in that position.  
    “Coach Jonas has a track record of building winners,” stated Fowlerville High Athletic Director Brian Osborn in making the announcement. “As the girls’ basketball coach in 2002, Coach Jonas led the Gladiators to the Regionals, has twice qualified our boys’ tennis team for the State Finals, and has built a successful girls tennis program. Coach Jonas knows what it takes to be successful and how to develop talent through individual workouts and in the team setting.”
   Jonas brings a familiarity with most of the players on the team, having been the junior varsity coach for the past few years. 
    “Coach Jonas is a fantastic coach and an even better person,” said Osborn. “We should all be excited to have a person of Jim’s character leading our young men. Jim’s knowledge of the game, player development, in-game adjustments that we have witnessed in previous years that are necessary to win and his ability to develop relationships will keep the future bright at Fowlerville!”
    Coach Jonas said that he is looking forward to the challenge of building and maintaining a successful program both on and off the court for years to come.
    He met last Monday, June 12, with players to discuss his mission, vision, core values and summer schedule.
New girls varsity basketball coach brings over 15 years of experience 
  The new Fowlerville High School varsity girls basketball coach, Billy Selvia, brings over 15 years of coaching experience to his position, including leading a successful AAU basketball program in the Flint area. He replaces Nick Douglass.
   “Coach Selvia’s passion and dedication for the game of basketball showed throughout the entire interview process,” said Fowlerville High School Athletic Director Brian Osborn.
    “Coach Selvia is excited to work with our group of girls to build on a highly competitive basketball program in Fowlerville that all will be proud of,” Osborn added. “He will focus on relationships, building trust between players and coaches, basketball I.Q. and making sure the Gladiators have sound fundamentals. Coach Selvia will be a great addition to the Fowlerville Athletic Department and we look forward to many years of success on and most importantly off the basketball court. I am excited to get Coach Selvia in the gym working with our girls.”
    Though the season does not officially start until November, Coach Selvia will begin summer activities immediately and said that he looks forward to connecting with the returning players and any students in the district interested in playing basketball. 
   He met with the players last Tuesday for a quick meeting and then moved into an open gym session. Summer league games will begin this Monday, June 19.

‘Fun in the Ville’ taking place this Saturday, June 17, at Centennial Park
   The 2nd Annual ‘Fun in the Ville’ is taking place this Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Centennial Park, next to the Fowlerville Fire Hall.
   A variety of activities and entertainment is being offered.
   Arts and crafts along with home-based businesses will have their wares for sale. In addition, a bake sale is planned by the Fowlerville United Methodist Women.
  The very popular Dunk Tank will be back, featuring area celebrities who will be taking turns on the perch. The event will also feature a Petting Zoo, Knockerball and Battle Darts, My Little Farm and an Inflatable Obstacle Course, Tumble Trac by the Livingston County Gymnastics, and Kids Games put on by the Fowlerville United Brethren.
     The musical entertainment lineup starts with Bronsyn Sacker singing at noon, followed by Kari Holmes entertaining from 1-2 p.m. and then ‘Southern Drive’, a country Jazz soft rock band, on the stage from 2-4 p.m. 
   D.J. Ken Bielous will be playing music, starting at 10 am. and in between the musical sets.
  Admission is free and there is no charge for most of the activities.
    Food and refreshments will be available as well. 
   The Fowlerville Fire Dept. plans to hold an Open House as part of the event.
   ‘Fun in the Ville’ is being put on by the Place Making committee, part of the Fowlerville Strategic Planning Committee.

Fowlerville High Athletic Director  announces new varsity football coach
    Fowlerville High School Athletic Director Brian Osborn announced recently that Jon Fletcher will be the new Fowlerville High School Varsity Football.
Coach  Fletcher takes over for Bret Shrader who was coming off a 7-3 season that included a Division 3 playoff appearance. During that playoff run, Fletcher played a key role as a coordinator on the defensive staff. The position became vacant when Shrader decided to leave, citing a desire to spend more time with his family and their various activities.”
    “Coach Fletcher is a special education teacher in our district and has done a tremendous job in the classroom and on the athletic field,” said Osborn “He brings a high degree of knowledge to the varsity head football coaching position.’
    Osborn noted that Fletcher had been a member of the Haslett High football coaching staff for seven years prior to his new position here. He also worked with the FHS Track team this spring. 
    “Coach Fletcher has consistently challenged student athletes to be successful academically and athletically,” said Osborn. “He has stressed and taught accountability, responsibility, technique, and discipline to all of his student athletes in all facets of their lives.  In addition, he has emphasized the importance of teamwork, character and leadership development, and communication skills.  He is extremely dedicated and committed to maximizing a student athlete’s potential both on and off the field.”
    “His dedication and commitment to providing our student athletes with positive characteristic traits and skills on and off the field, will help our football program to continue to grow and be successful,” the athletic director added. “Coach Fletcher has a gift that has allowed him to connect with our student-athletes and build positive relationships…I welcome Coach Jon Fletcher to the Gladiator Coaching family.”
Grandma’s Attic Sale being held at Fowlerville Fairgrounds June 15-16-17
    The annual Spring Grandma's Attic Sale, benefiting the Livingston Centre Historic Village, will be held later this week at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds. Beginning on Thursday, June 15 at 9:00 a.m. and running through Saturday, June 17, the public is invited to support this annual fundraiser, held in the Commercial Building near the main gate. Webberville United Methodist Church serving Chicken Dinner on June 17
    The Webberville United Methodist Church is having its monthly chicken dinner on Saturday, June17 with oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, vegetables and biscuits. The meal will include coffee, lemonade, and dessert. The dinner will be served 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $9 per adult, $4 for children 12 and under; preschoolers eat free. This is an outreach service to the community and proceeds will fund church ministries. Webberville United Methodist Church is located on the corner of Holt Road and M-52.

Gjavit Jakupi
     Gjavit Jakupi passed away at the age of 37 on May 25, 2017. He is survived by his two sons: Aidan and Brody Teague, his mother: Dianne Brown, his father: Ali Jakupi, brother: Adem Jakupi and sister: Gjulie Kastrati. He was also an uncle to six nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Wednesday, May 31, 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Funeral services took place on Thursday, June 1, at 2 p.m. at Herrmann Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Storey officiating. Mary Allmendinger
    Mary Allmendinger, 83, of Fowlerville, passed away on May 25, 2017, from complications of pneumonia. 
    Mary was born on November 16, 1933, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Mary Weber Curtis and Glen Curtis. 
    Mary was married, on July 25, 1953, in Dexter, Michigan, to Harold Edward Allmendinger. They lived in both Dexter and Ann Arbor before moving to Fowlerville in 1964. They have three children: Barry (1956-2010), Kelly (1963-), and Robert (1971-). 
    Mary is survived by her spouse, Harold; daughter, Kelly; son, Robert; grandchildren, Amanda, Amber, and Derek; brother, Lee, and his wife, Elaine; and many extended family members and friends. 
    Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Joanne; and son, Barry. 
     There will not be any services as Mary wished to be cremated. Her ashes will be spread on Lake Michigan at sunset.

‘Livingston Paint Out 2017’ set for July 22-23; sign-in at Howell Opera House 
   The Brighton Art Guild and the Livingston Arts Council are co-hosting the two-day ‘Livingston Paint Out 2017’, a plain air competition in which artists complete a painting(s) outdoors within a specific time period, on Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23. Participants can paint anywhere in Livingston County--from the many lakes and country roads to the charming towns with sidewalk bistros and brick storefronts. The Paint Out event is open to all artists, all ages, all media!
    Artists will sign in from 8 AM – 1 PM on Saturday, July 22 and/or 8 AM to 11 AM on Sunday, July 23 at the Howell Opera House. A continental breakfast will be provided as well as a list of possible places to paint and a bottle of water for the road. Paintings can be returned to the Cobach Center at 202 W. Main St. in Brighton on July 23rd between 2 and 5 PM.    
    Paintings will be displayed at the Cobach Center and ArtVentures in Brighton from July 24th – August 3rd, and will then be displayed and judged in the Brighton Art Guild tent during the Brighton Fine Art & Music Festival August 4th – 6th. Cash prizes will be awarded in several categories, including Best of Show, 2nd& 3rd place, and People’s Choice Award.

Howell Area Historical Society Museum hosting open house on Sat., June 17
    The Howell Area Historical Society Museum Open House will be held on Saturday, June 17 from 9am - 1pm commemorating the United States participation in WWI and the 100th anniversary of the Local Red Cross Chapter. 
     The open house will be followed at 2pm by author visit and book signing by former Trains editor Kevin P. Keefe's discussion of his new book, Twelve Twenty-Five: The Life and Times of a Steam Locomotive, selected as one of Michigan's 2017 Notable Books. He will share the history of Pere Marquette 1225, made famous for its mainline excursions and the model for the steam locomotive in the blockbuster movie 'Polar Express.' The locomotive is the centerpiece of the Steam Railroad Institute in Owosso which visits during Melon Festival.

Crossroads United Methodist holding Vacation Bible School July 17-20
     Crossroads United Methodist Church will present an original series of “God’s Life Lessons” at the church’s 2017 summer vacation bible school July 17-20.  Through music, drama, games, crafts, science projects and Bible stories, children will learn and grow at the church, corner of Haslett and Zimmer roads north of Williamston and east of Haslett.
    The designated mission project for this year’s VBS is Kids First Uganda. 
    Crossroads VBS will begin with dinner and run from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening.  Children aged three through entering fifth grade are eligible. There is no charge.

Calvary Church of Webberville to host Maker Fun Factory VBS on June 19-23
    Calvary Church of Webberville Invites Children to Maker Fun Factory:   Created by God. Built for a purpose!
    At Maker Fun Factory, your kids discover that God made them—and for a purpose! Kids participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing songs, play teamwork-building games, make and devour yummy treats, experience one-of-a-kind Bible adventures, collect Bible Memory Buddies to remind them of God’s love, and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, your kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings.   
     Each day concludes with the Funshop Finale that gets everyone involved in living what they’ve learned. Family members and friends are encouraged to join in daily for this special time.
