Her Legacy…Domenica Sue Krayewski, 54, passed away January 21, 2023. She was born on February 3, 1968, in Detroit, Michigan to Norman H. Yono and Joanna Sheehan. She will be remembered as a loving daughter, mother, sister and grandmother. Domenica loved family outings and taking day trips with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed history, going to museums, traveling to the U.P., and she loved lighthouses. Domenica always made sure to attend her children’s events, no matter how busy she was working as a single mother. She loved being a Grandmother more than anything. She liked to garden and plant flowers, always had a green thumb. Domenica would always look out for others and was a great friend to many. Domenica will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her Family…Domenica will be missed by her children Alexandra Krayewski and James Uselton; parents Thomas & Joanna Goodall; father Norman H. Yono; brothers Mustafa Hamed and Saad Hamed; grandchildren Olivia Joann Uselton and Kendall James Uselton; and boyfriend, Ralph Wetherbee.

Donations sought for Fowlerville High School Alumni Scholarship fund

It’s that time of year, time to consider making a donation to the Fowlerville High School Alumni Scholarship Fund. Each year for nearly 50 years, donations received for the FHS Alumni Scholarship Fund have enabled the Alumni Association to award scholarships to members of the current graduating class.

According to FHS Alumni president Judy Epley Recker, usually the donations are in memory of loved ones and classmates who are graduates of FHS. However, many donations have been made in the name of individuals who, in some way, were connected to the Fowlerville Schools or the Fowlerville community, such as a custodian, a coach, a faculty or Board of Education member, a bus driver, a hot lunch person, or a community supporter.

Donations received are recognized in both the alumni program & a published list in the Fowlerville News & Views. The FHS Alumni Association is a registered 501(c)(3) organization.

The 129th FHS Alumni gathering will be Saturday, June 10, at FHS. Details are still being worked out. The past two years FHS’ alums and friends have gathered at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds-Finlan Gazebo, due to COVID restrictions.

Donations can be sent to the FHS Alumi Association, PO Box 446, Fowlerville, MI 48836. While donations are accepted year-round, to be included in the 2023 program donations should be received by May 5th.

 Deborah (Debi) Jean Devine

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Deborah (Debi) Jean Devine—lost this past Saturday, January 14, 2023, at age 69, in Fowlerville, Michigan.

Debi was born June 24, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to her parents William and Gladys Horton. There, she lived with her brothers Donnie and Dale, all of whom she will be lovingly reunited with in death. After moving to Michigan, Debi found the love of her life and husband, Kerry (Pat) Devine, where they spent an incredible 47 years together.

Debi is survived by those she loved and supported unconditionally, including her children Keri and John Kinnunen, Kayla and David Martinez, William (Billy) Devine, and John and Andi McFadden, as well as her grandchildren Megan, Matthew, Brody, Tyler, Cici, Leah, Lilah, Kerissah, Teagan, Presley, Tayden, and Malcolm, and her brother Robert (Bob) and Ilona Horton.

Hardly a day ever passed when Debi’s beautiful family didn’t feel her support in one way or another; she was always everyone’s biggest fan. Even her hobbies embodied who Debi was as an encouraging soul, from cheering on the Spartans and the Detroit Tigers to spending time with her family and precious grandkids. She also spent much time as a cake decorator and, of course, on Facebook. Her energy will be missed dearly by those touched by her love.

In place of flowers, donations can be made to the Devine family to help with funeral and medical expenses.  Robert Gerald Tomlin

Robert Gerald Tomlin, 79, of Flint Township formerly from Fowlerville, passed January 14, 2023. He was born March 19, 1943.

He was proceded in death by his wife Patricia, daughter Tracy, and parents Gerald and Evelyn Tomlin.

Father of Wendy Biroth, two stepsons Randy and Scott Albright, grandparent to Cody and Tyler Biroth, Emily, Jake, Josh and Lexi Albright, brother to Karen Oliver, Eugene Tomlin, late Joyce Howerton, Carole Gilboe, and Joan Kopkel.

Robert retired from Ford Motor Company in 1999 after serving 50 years. He also retired from Harness Racing which was his and his wife’s passion. A graveside service was held at Greenwood Cemetery on Friday, January 19, 2023 at Noon. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home.  ‘Midnight in the Tropics’ fundraiser to support two Livingston County charities

‘Midnight in the Tropics’, Livingston County’s premier fundraising event, is back for another fun-filled night while benefiting the community. The signature event kicks off at 5 pm on Saturday, February 4, at Crystal Gardens Banquet Center in Howell.

Livingston County Sunrise Rotary Club organizes the fundraiser each year to benefit two local charities and the Livingston Sunrise Rotary Foundation, which distributes grants to other charitable organizations in the community throughout the year.

This year, the two beneficiaries are The Connection Youth Services and Habitat for Humanity. Both organizations provide vital support to the Livingston County community.

The Connection Youth Services consists of three programs (Emergency Shelter, Transitional Living, and Street Outreach) that strive to build positive relationships between youth, their families, and their community.

Habitat for Humanity’s A Brush With Kindness Program provides repairs and updates to families’ existing homes to ensure safety and accessibility.

There’s something for everyone at ‘Midnight in the Tropics’, including an expansive silent and live auction, various games and raffles, a live band, a buffet dinner, open bar and so much more. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson will return as auctioneer for the live auction, with numerous exciting items up for grabs, such as incredible vacation trips, exclusive experiences and more.

Tickets are currently available to the public, with limited space remaining as the event often sells out. The community can support the event and beneficiaries by purchasing tickets and sponsorships or by donating silent and live auction items.

 OLSHA holding ‘Walk for Warmth’ at Hartland Center on       Feb. 11th

OLSAH is holding its ‘Walk for Warmth’ on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Hartland Educational Support Service Center, 9525 E. Highland Road, Howell.

The mission of this family-friendly event is to raise funds to support those in need in Livingston County to stay warm and safe in their homes during the coldest months. By walking alongside community supporters and first responders, you can help these dedicated individuals continue to assist families in local neighborhoods. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins promptly at 9 a.m.

Livingston Fine Art Association meeting on Jan. 31 in Howell

The Livingston Fine Art Association monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, January 31st, at the First Presbyterian Church, Howell. Doors open at 6:30pm, with the meeting beginning at 7:00pm. Use the rear entrance under the green canopy.

 Herbert R. Hellwege ‘Ray’

Feb. 13, 1942-Jan. 7, 2023

Herbert R. Hellwege “Ray’ of Fowerville passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 7, 2023 after battling many ilnesses through the years, including cancer, diabetes, and leukemia—to name a few.

Ray is survived by his wife of seven years Elaine Moen, his daughter Wendy Row, a grandson Mark James Row, and a granddaughter Rachel Drayer. Between Ray and Elaine, there are 15 grandkids and 13 great-grandchildren.

His greatest loves were gatherings with family and friends, fishing, hunting and motorcyles.

A celebration of Ray’s life will be held on Sunday, January 22, at 12:30 p.m. at the Place of Refuge Church, 6909 E. Grand River, Fowlerville, across from the Greenwood Cemetery. Pastor Robert Story is officiating the celebration. Very casual attire is appreciated. A country western theme. Flannel shirts, jeans, cowboy attire, and boots are welcome.

 Euchre Fun Night planned at the Webberville Library on         Jan. 28th

The Friends of the Webberville Library is sponsoring a Euchre Fun Night fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 28. Registration at 6:00 p.m. and playing begins 6:30 p.m. at the Webberville Cultural Center. The entry fee is $10 a person to play. Prizes will be awarded and there will be a 50/50 drawing.

Snacks and beverages will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.

Livingston County Homeless Continuum planning ‘Community Connect 2023’ on Feb. 4th

The Livingston County Homeless Continuum of Care is busy planning ‘Community Connect 2023’ which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at the 2|42 Church in Brighton.

“We’re looking forward to bringing our residents another day of connection with services, free resources, and plenty of helpful information,” organizers said. “If this is the first time you’ve heard of Community Connect, it is a free one-day event with 50+ public service and agency exhibitors who provide residents with helpful basic need information, free personal care items, and services like health screenings and haircuts.”

Over 300 people regularly attend the event and 2023 will be its’ 16th year running.

 Howell Area Chamber of Commerce to hold annual dinner on Feb. 1st

The Howell Area Chamber of Commerce will host its 66th Annual Dinner & Citizen of the Year Presentation, February 1st at Cleary University-Cleary Commons. The event will recognize community leaders and achievements, as well as spotlight key Howell Area Chamber of Commerce programs and events. The theme for the event is “Onward & Upward, Moving Business to New Heights.”

“The Annual Dinner Committee chose this year’s theme to highlight the full return of the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest in 2022”, said Janelle Best, President of the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce.

“The theme “Onward and Upward” portrays hot air balloons rising above mountains that symbolize the ability to rise above the many hurdles that we’ve all encountered the past few years,” she explained, adding that “We’re all very excited to bring together our members, businesses, and community leaders to celebrate and highlight this year’s Annual Award recipients and unveil our Citizen of the Year.”

Award recipients being honored at the event include: Aludyne (Chamber Innovator of the Year Award), Susan Pominville, Abovo Visual Communications (Community Excellence Award), Nathan Burd, Livingston County Administrator (Rising Star Award), and Eileen Zilch, Community Catalysts (Game Changer Award).

The announcement of the Citizen of the Year is kept a secret and announced at the end of the evening. The Annual Dinner & Citizen of the Year Presentation is presented by Brighton Ford and Trinity Health.

The annual dinner celebration begins at 5 p.m. with a strolling dinner and networking. The program will commence at 6 pm and will be followed by a celebratory afterglow. Barbara Ann (Curtis)

 HallBarbara Hall, age 81, passed away on January 2, 2023. Barb is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Jim Hall.

Barb was born September 10, 1941, to Frank Curtis and Frances (Finlan) Curtis. She graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1959 to pursue an associate degree in nursing from Mercy School of Nursing of Detroit in Ann Arbor. Barb married Jim Hall on August 31, 1963, and while Jim finished his bachelor’s degree at NMU in Marquette, Barb worked at a hospital maternity and deliveries ward until their first child, James Timothy “Tim”, was born in 1964. Barb loved children and would have remained in this field of nursing. Instead, Barb and Jim returned to Fowlerville in 1967; Jim took a job with State Farm Insurance and Barb returned to the family-owned grocery store, Frank’s IGA. Kelley Joan, Jim and Barb’s second child, was born in 1968.

Through the years, Barb’s medical training, combined with her compassion and helpfulness, often made her the family, IGA, or neighborhood medic for emergencies or illnesses, and splinters from walking barefoot in the woods on Drummond Island. An organizational outlet for this compassion was Barb’s community service for over a decade on Livingston County mental health association boards. She believed that mental health was an underserved area of need.

The oldest of her siblings and second eldest among her generation of Finlan cousins, Barb loved to socialize and host parties of all sorts. She enjoyed travelling with Jim on long vacations, most often to wherever Tim and Kelley were living at the time. Barb’s not-so-secret favorite vacation spot was the Hawaiian island of Maui. Barb and Jim were active members of the St. Agnes parish community until their 2009 retirement to Au Gres, Michigan, where they attended St. Mark’s Catholic Church.

Barb is survived by her son Tim (Tenly) Hall and step-grandchildren Sophia, Malek, and Gabriel Mabrouk; her daughter Kelley Hall (Jai Miranda); siblings Ken (Juanita) Curtis, Patricia (Don) Dowd, Carol (John) Jelken, Mary Curtis (Lori Horsic); sister-in-law Peg (Bob) Grover; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. She is preceded in death, by her parents and sister, Joan Curtis.

Visitation was held at Herrmann Funeral Home in Fowlerville from 3:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, January 5. On Friday, January 6, a funeral service was held at St. Agnes Catholic Church with a visitation at 10:00am and mass held at 11:00am, followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

 Daniel James Michalik

Daniel James Michalik, age 34, of Gregory, MI, passed away on November 10, 2022 at his home. Daniel was born on January 16, 1988 in Howell, MI to Tracy and Linda (Swank) Michalik.

Daniel had worked as Foreman where he was a loyal employee of Upper Cut Tree Service. He enjoyed working on cars, tinkering, and wrenching on stuff. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was always willing to help.

He is survived by his father, Tracy (Denise Rowell) Michalik, and mother, Linda (Mike) Williamson, sister, Rebecca Swank (Shawn Conkel), his uncles, Dane, Terry, and Russell, and aunts, Dawn and Clatina. A Celebration of Life is being planned by his close friends and will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at the Elks Lodge in Howell from 3-6 p.m.

 Dean Milton Dodge

October 4, 1931 to December 23, 2022

Dean Milton Dodge was born on October 4, 1931 to Hazel and Roland Dodge in Sunfield, MI. He grew up on a farm. In high school, Dean enjoyed playing baseball and was a good student. After graduation, he moved to Lansing, and while he was working in a car factory, he was introduced to Betty Stephenson through their mutual friends Don Mast and Marguerite DeWitt.

Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed on the USS Currituck. He traveled all over Europe and to Cuba. During his time in the Navy, he was awarded a special honor after he single-handedly saved a man’s life by rescuing him from a seaplane that had crashed in the water and caught on fire.

While Dean was in the Navy, he and Betty corresponded for three years prior to getting married on December 12, 1953. After Betty graduated from nurse’s training, the two of them moved to Norfolk, VA where Randolph was born. After completing his four years of service in the Navy, the young family moved to Lansing, MI, and Dean began working at the Venetian Blind Laundry. Shortly thereafter, Dean and Betty settled in Webberville, MI, and their second son, Brian, was born.

Dean was a very active community member and enjoyed serving in his community as a volunteer fireman, Webberville Village Council Trustee, Boy Scout leader, and Citizen of the Year committee member. Dean was an active life member of the Webberville Masonic Lodge #485 where he served as a Past Master, Deputy District Instructor, and Secretary. Dean also taught children in the grade school reading program, helped with band boosters and sports, and made wheelchair hand cranks for people who had lost limbs in the war. Dean was a committed member of the Webberville United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

Dean retired from the Venetian Blind Laundry on disability after a major heart attack at the age of 52. Doctors did not expect Dean would live longer than a year, yet he surprised us all. During these years after his heart attack, Dean’s life quieted down. He enjoyed spending time with his neighbors, friends, family, and grandchildren. He especially relished his grandchildren and attended their sporting events, school activities, and other important life milestones. Dean enjoyed playing cards and games, reading, and going out to eat. Dean and Betty also spent 23 winters at Atlantic Beach, NC, and Dean enjoyed watching the ships and dolphins and spending time with his NC family. Dean delighted in being with people, welcomed everyone, and had an uncanny way of just making everyone feel incredibly special.

Dean was treasured by many people in his life, and he felt especially honored each time someone named their child after him. Gary Dean Mast (friend), Brian Dean Dodge (son), Jack Dean Stephenson (brother-in-law), Matthew Dean Dodge (grandson) Hudson Dean Yu, Eric Dean Lau, Jackson Dean Dodge (great grandsons) are among those that share Dean’s name.

Dean passed away on December 23, 2022 at Sparrow Hospital. In the few days that preceded Dean’s death, he was able to say his final farewells to his wife, both sons, sister-in-law Marion, granddaughter Teya, grandson Joe, and great grandson Hudson in person. His other grandchildren were all able to call him prior to his passing. He made sure each of them knew that they were loved and had always been loved. After drifting off to sleep, he continued to receive calls, messages, and visits from family, friends, and neighbors. His wife and granddaughter Teya stayed by his side until the end, and Dean left this world giving Betty’s hand a final squeeze before going peacefully. Dean will be remembered as a quiet and humble man who loved the Lord.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Clinton Dodge, Bernard Dodge, and sister Joyce Petrie, his great grandson Josiah, and Cathy Ellsworth who was like a daughter to him.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Marie Dodge; his son Randolph and wife Becky of Morehead City, NC and his son Brian Dean and wife Adele of Lansing, MI; his grandchildren Christine (Tim), Joe (Jeanette), Teya, Nathanael (Kelly), Matthew Dean (Allison), Elizabeth (Jaredd), Joanna (Andrew), and Christopher; and his great grandchildren Hudson Dean, Ian, Eric Dean, Emma, Lily, Kaitlyn, Jackson Dean, Lexie, Harper, and Jonah; step grandchild Jeremy (Holly); and step great grandchildren Calvin and Sydney. Dean will be missed by his sister-in-law Marion Sherburne, former daughter-in-law Pamela McCoy, many past and present neighbors, his nieces and nephews, family, and dear friends.

The immediate family will honor Dean in late April, and all will be invited to a picnic on the 4th of July in their neighborhood to remember Dean and celebrate his life. Condolences can be sent to Betty Dodge, and donations can be sent to the Webberville United Methodist Church.

 Earl Paul Richards

Earl Paul Richards, age 75, passed away peacefully in his home on Dec. 27, 2022. Earl is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia (Meyer); his daughter Robin Nielson, her husband Chris, and their son Matthew; his daughter Jill Curtis, her husband Matthew, and their daughters Sophia and Ava; and also Earl’s sister, Joyce Patton (Richards).

Earl was preceded in death by his parents Herschel and Jeannette, and siblings Juanita Peterson, Bertha Wiles, Ronald Richards, and Beverly Brown.

Earl was born on April 11, 1947. He attended Hartland Schools and graduated in 1965. He completed trade school, became a journeyman plumber, and joined Plumbers Local 98 of Detroit. He worked at various industrial locations in the metro area and became well-known in the industry for his incredible work ethic, and efficient quality performance.

Earl and Pat purchased beautiful wooded property in Fowlerville where they built their lifetime home. Earl enjoyed hunting, fishing, and an active country life. He and his family faithfully attended Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Howell. Earl found great joy in service to his Savior, and freely gave of his time and treasure. Earl and Pat highly valued Christian education and made it a priority that their daughters attend Lutheran schools for grade school, high school, and college. He and Pat enjoyed entertaining, and Earl loved to share stories, laughter, and lively conversation. His family and friends will always remember his kind and helpful nature, generous love, and strong faith in Christ.

Visitation was scheduled at MacDonald Funeral Home in Howell on January 3 from 3-7 pm. His funeral service took place on January 4 at 11:00 am at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church of Howell, followed by Christian burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville. All were welcome to attend and celebrate Earl’s arrival to his heavenly home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the WELS Central Africa Medical Mission (CAMM www.camm.us ) in honor of Earl. He was passionate about their mission to build local borehole wells to make water easily accessible for those who would otherwise need to walk for miles to obtain fresh water.  Williamston Farmers Market Bottle& Can Collection set for Jan. 15th

Sowing Growth, the non-profit organization that operates the Eastern Ingham Farmers Market in Williamston, will be collecting Michigan-returnable bottles and cans at McCormick Park's large parking lot on Sunday, Jan. 15th. Collection dates in the off-season are the 1st and 3rd Sundays each month in 2023 from January through April, from 11am to 1pm.

This popular fundraiser is a win-win: you don't have to do the icky-sticky job of taking the bottles back to the store, and you're supporting the Farmers Market which has no other funding sources other than grants and donations.

Upcoming coollection dates in the off-season are: February 5 & 19, March 5 & 19, and April 2 & 16, between 11am and 1pm. If your business collects bottles and cans, consider donating them. Special collections can be made directly at your business address during the week.  OLSHA holding ‘Walk for Warmth’ at Hartland Center on     Feb. 11th

Olsah is holding its ‘Walk for Warmthn’ on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Hartland Educational Support Service Center, 9525 E. Highland Road, Howell.

The mission of this family-friendly event is to raise funds to support those in need in Livingston County to stay warm and safe in their homes during the coldest months. By walking alongside community supporters and first responders, you can help these dedicated individuals continue to assist families in local neighborhoods. The Fowlerville Knights of Columbus is holding a Winter Picnic on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the St. Agnes Church’s Life Parrish Center, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Grilled hot dogs will be served, with the meal including mac & cheese, baked beans, potato salad, and lemonade. Cost of Adults $9, Child $5, and Family of Four $25. A beer and wine cash bar is available.
