Bruce “Jerry” Bell, Jr.

Bruce “Jerry” Bell, Jr. was a fighter. He fought passionately about many things in his life, including the things he believed in, the things he didn’t, and in the end, his cancer.

Jerry spent most of his days doing one of his four favorite things: selling cars, golfing, watching sports or reading. He was passionate about all he did, always giving 110%. This never once wavered in all of his 70 years. His passion was evident in his dedication to his community of Fowlerville. Jerry worked hard to better his community through many years of public service, as he served on village council, founded Fowlerville’s Mission House (AA), and assisted in the planning of the new Fire Department as a commissioner on the project.

As a young boy, Jerry loved basketball and played for Waterford Kettering’s team, setting a record of 42 points during one game. His high achievement and goal setting carried with him through his whole life. Everything he did, he did with commitment and integrity. He will be missed dearly.

Jerry was born in Flint, Michigan on January 16, 1953, to Bruce “Jerry” Bell and Patricia Bell, and passed on March 15, 2023. He was the first of 5 children. He leaves behind his mother, Patricia; his siblings: Patrick Bell, Robert (Becky) Bell, Sherry (Jen) Bell, and Timothy (Angie) Bell, as well as his many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his three children: Eric (Stacey) Bell, Sarah (Scott) Avendt, and Blaney Bell, and grandkids: Jacob, Anna, Jada, Drew, Jett, and Stryker.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be sent In memory of Jerry Bell: to the Mission House of Fowlerville, FUMC P.O. Box 344 Fowlerville MI, 48836 Attn: Mission House. or Alano Club of Livingston County P.O. Box 567 Brighton MI, 48116. Share memories at temrowskifamilyfuneralhome.com

 Sandra “Gams” Marie Darocha

Sandra “Gams” Marie Darocha (73) of Houghton Lake, Michigan, passed away with peace, comfort, and with close family at her bedside, on March 17, 2023.

Sandra was born in Michigan, November 14, 1949, to Herbert and Eleanor (Bragenzer) Powser. She was the baby sister to 11 older siblings, from which she quickly developed her strength and ingenuity.

Apart from her many siblings, Sandra cherished her sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors. Truly unmatched was the love she had for her husband, Mike Darocha, of 49 years. While she was a one-of-kind mother to her daughter, Cheryl and son-in-law Chuck, the greatest thing she ever became was a grandmother to her two loving grandsons, Ian (Emily) and Ethan Baxter.

Some of her many talents included choosing the best walleye fishing spots on the lake, predicting the seemingly unpredictable Michigan weather, and frequently choosing winning lottery numbers. Mechanically inclined, she could often be found out in the garage helping her husband tinkering on cars and engines. Outside, she loved to hunt deer, and she reserved some of the greatest morel mushroom spots in the Houghton Lake area. Also, known to very few, was her rockstar-level ability of playing Guitar Hero on her Wii.

In the summer months, she loved soaking up the sun at her picnic table with a cold Miller Lite, music blasting, and visiting with her friends and family. Other times, shooting pool, bonfires and evening cruises on her golf cart were on her agenda.

Sandra was no stranger to baking or cooking. Whether she was watching a Michigan football game with her family, NASCAR, or boxing matches, homemade hot wings or ribeye steaks grilled to perfection were likely on the menu. Other favorites she made included deviled eggs, potato salad, and her handcrafted pies.

She spent the majority of her latter years surrounded by nature on the Cut River. Her Mother Nature-esque personality will surely be missed by the birds, small critters, deer, turkeys, bobcats, and especially black bears (Big Ben, specifically) of Northern Michigan.

In her final time, Gams expressed how she considered music one of the best attributes to a good life. She noted it’s healing powers and its ability to always bring people together.

Sandra is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Chuck) Baxter and two grandchildren, Ian (Emily) and Ethan Baxter, as well as her cat, Yoda.

She is preceded in death by her Mom and Dad, Eleanor and Herbert Powser, her husband Michael Darocha, her black lab Dora, Sisters’ Doris Irvine and Judy Presnell, Brothers’ Robert, Harvey, Harold, and Carl Powser, and her nephew, Michael Otter.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later date for both her and Mike.

 Virginia Lou (Carson) Peckens

July 4, 1932 – March 10, 2023

At 90 years old, Virginia Lou Peckens went to a place prepared for her in heaven after passing away at the farm that her family called home for six decades in Fowlerville, Michigan.

Raised by a courageous mother, Virginia graduated from Milford High School in 1950 and embarked on a remarkable college career at Michigan State College. She studied ag extension and received her Bachelor’s Degree from MSC where she paved the way for women for generations to come. She was the first woman on the MSC Livestock Judging Team and the MSC Meats Judging Team. Her stories of traveling the country to judging contests as the only woman were notable, but not something she set out to accomplish. She simply signed up for the animal evaluation class and wanted to learn more; breaking a path for women was the last thing on her mind. But she did, and generations of women have come behind her and excelled in this area. Yet agriculture was not her only passion, she enjoyed and excelled at singing and held recitals and even made a recording at WKAR studios.

She met the love of her life, Richard Peckens, at MSC and they married on June 22, 1957. She had her teaching certificate from Wayne State University by this time, and taught second grade for a couple of years before she began having children and then chose to be a stay-at-home mom. Together they had five children and lived on the farm where she shared a passion of breeding dairy cattle with her husband. She fell in love with Ayrshires and spent countless hours making breeding decisions and enjoyed showing cattle and managing the herd with her husband until a barn fire took the herd in 1994.

She was the consummate home-room mom as she volunteered to help with her children’s classroom activities and helped keep the Fowlerville band well-dressed as the uniform chairman for years. She ran the 4-H kitchen at the Fowlerville Fair for decades and then moved on to help with the Home Arts division of the fair, making sure all the entries were judged and displayed properly under the grandstand. She never met a fair she didn’t like as she was also a livestock entry clerk at the Michigan State Fair in Detroit.

She couldn’t get enough of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and as recently as December 2022 she went Christmas caroling with her great grandchildren in Montana, walking up and down the snow-covered streets following her legacy from house to house and singing right along with them. She had a passion for agriculture that spanned her entire life, starting as a 4-Her showing her horse, Big Red, at the county fair to winning the Block and Bridle Little International Contest at MSC.

Of all her accomplishments throughout her life, her best and most cherished was being a mom. She loved that job and took it seriously. She was the mom to many young people, taking them in when they needed a home for a day or for a few months. Her home was open to anyone and everyone, and her homemade cookies soothed the soul and made the world a better place for many youths who needed TLC from someone who cared.

She was a member of the Philomathean Society, the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization, the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for decades, along with serving on several church committees. She assisted her husband with his insurance business and later with the Fowlerville Coop before it was sold.

She is survived by three children: Virginia (Stan) Raines, Rex Peckens, Melissa (Bobby) Hart; six siblings: Sandra Dean, Partricia Grieve, Rex (Linda) Peckens, Janet Peckens, Judy (Ron) Kay, Mary (David) Drew; grandchildren: Timothy (Laura) Stene, John (Kelsey) Stene, Thomas (Emily) Stene, Aaron Stene, Raynor (Ashley) Stene, Josh Peckens, Adam Peckens, J.W. Hart, Luke (Jessie) Hart, Sarah Hart, Jake Hart; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons: Timothy John Peckens and Matthew Adam Peckens.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Home Arts Division of the Fowlerville Fair or the Fowlerville Library’s historical document preservation section. A Memorial service will be held on March 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Fowlerville. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

 Joyce Louise Call

Joyce Louise (Norton) Call was born on March 30, 1929 to Alba and Hulda (Fall) Norton. She passed away peacefully on March 8, 2023. Joyce married Francis John Call on September 11, 1948 and they had five children: William (Judy) Call, Deborah (Larry) Gardner, Donald (Maureen) Call, Thomas (Patty) Call, and Pattie (Steve) Edmundson.

Joyce loved her family, cleaning house, spending time with friends and neighbors, and preparing favorite dishes like potato salad and goulash. She and Francis enjoyed square dancing, traveling with their camper, planting flowers around their Fowlerville home in the spring, and sitting on the porch watching Fowlerville folks drive and walk by. In addition to raising five children, Francis and Joyce fostered several children from Ingham and Livingston counties. Joyce was member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and worked at Utilex, Kreeger Dairy and Felpausch Foods.

Joyce is survived by her five children and one brother, Donald Norton of Webberville, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; two sisters: LaVon Corser and Priscilla Bennett; two brothers; Neil Norton and Ralph Norton; and her parents, Alba and Hulda Norton.

 Pamela L. Ish

3/10/60 to 3/8/23

Pam slipped away peacefully after fighting a difficult disease for a very long time. She leaves behind her husband of almost 28 years, Robert Ish, Jr., her three children Kelli M. Ish, Katelin R. Ish and Robert J. Ish, her sister Kathy (Tom) Rosenbergh, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. We can not forget all the animals, domestic or wild, that she loved and cared for all her life.

Pam was preceeded in death by her parents, Joseph and Yvonne VanGilder.

Pam was a Registered Nurse at University of Michigan Hospital for many years, then a home health care nurse for many more. It was in her nature to help others, a true caring woman.

While her zest for life was tempered these last few years, she still took joy in her birds "Chippers", "Nutters" and an occasional opossum or raccoon hitting up the bird feeders and the ground below.

Pam had a fondness and knack for fishing. Usually having luck when the rest of us.....not so much.

Pam was a lover of music, mainly classic rock and roll. This love would frequently result in a musical outburst that came straight from her soul. In her last few days, she was heard softly serenading herself and the others in the room.

A kind soul, always offering help. The first to apologize, even if the apology wasn’t hers to make.

Those things are life lessons she gave us, her family and friends. We should honor her memory by remembering these lessons and do our best to follow them.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Fowlerville High School to present ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ March 17-19

The theater department of Fowlerville High School is presenting ‘Peter and the Starcatcher this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday—March 17-19 at the Alverson Center for Performing Arts.

‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ provides a humorous and fantastical backstory for the beloved character of Peter Pan and his arch-nemesis Captain Hook. In this wildly imaginative play, we meet a poor orphaned child on the high seas simply called Boy because, in the absence of a mother and a father, he was never given a name.

His sad and lonely world is turned upside down when he meets Molly, the daughter of famous Starcatcher Lord Aster. Our heroine is on a mission to save the world and protect a treasure trunk filled with magical starstuff from getting into the hands of evil and greedy pirate Black Stache.

As they travel aboard the Neverland ship headed for a faraway land, Molly and Boy learn about love, friendship and forge an unbreakable bond: "To have faith is to have wings."

Plan now for spring tree planting

Whether you want to provide dazzling fall color, attract backyard wildlife or benefit pollinators like bees and butterflies, picking the right trees for spring planting involves preparation.

Important questions to ask when selecting the perfect tree for your space are: · Will it thrive in your area’s growing zone?

     · Does it have specific water, light or soil needs that your site can          support?

     · How big will it grow? Will roots or branches interfere with                 building foundations or power lines?

     · Is it native or non-native? A healthy mix of native trees                       provides  the most benefits to insects and wildlife. Trees can be         purchased from Michigan conservation district tree sales,                   seedling nurseries, the Arbor Day Foundation and local retail             and wholesale vendors.

When spring weather returns and you are ready to get a shovel in the dirt, make sure to call 811 or visit MISS DIG online first. Pros will mark utility lines for free so you can avoid making costly mistakes. Visit Michigan.gov/MiTrees to learn more about our pledge to plant 50 million trees by 2030. See where the DNR and your neighbors have planted trees and add your own to the statewide map.

For tree planting and care information, visit our Urban and Community Forestry webpage at Michigan.gov/UCF.

Got ART to once again display talents of Livingston County students

Got ART returns this week for its 24th year! Livingston Arts Council is proud to present this art show which displays the talents of Livingston County students K-12 at The Historic Howell Opera House in downtown Howell. The art teachers from the area schools select the student art to be showcased for a week.

The quality of work from the schools is amazing. Each year is different because the of the talent of the students and the talent of the teachers in selection of art in relation to standards of curriculum. Submissions may be two-dimensional and three-dimensional work. The Council will have two shows (Secondary and Elementary) running for two weeks with March 13th as a break to set up the Elementary show.

The students’ work never ceases to amaze! The teachers draw out the creative ability of their students and they deliver! Many people in the community have commented on the ability our young people possess. The Art Council is thrilled with the caliber our county’s art students.

The Got Art Show creates a space for student artists to show their talent to our county, add the exhibition to their list of accomplishments for future college applications, increase their knowledge of displaying their work, and possibly sell their work to an interested person. It also lets them see the other students’ work and gain inspiration to apply to future art of their own.

The Got Art Show for Middle and High School (6th grade thru 12th grade) is March 7th thru March 12th. The elementary Got Art Show is March 14th thru March 19th.

aThe show is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4 pm until 8 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm until 5:00 pm
