Mike (Michael Robert) Purrier
On Thursday, December 15, 2016, Mike (Michael Robert) Purrier, age 50, made the decision to leave this life. He was a kind and compassionate man. He was wickedly gifted mechanically and artistically, with an offbeat sense of humour, love for the daring, and a mad passion for cars. He was an amazing father and a soumate husband. Please keep him in your heart. He is survived by his wife, Nan-Marie Fox, and his sons, Shelby Fox-Purrier and Mackenzie Fox-Purrier, and the fire-remains of his 1967 Camaro RS/SS, lost to him in August. His mother, Marlene (Lippy) Purrier and brothers Tim Purrier, Chris Purrier, and John Purrier are also remaining. His father, (Cecil) Bob (Robert) Purrier, also died unexpectedly on this same day, December 15, 2016. pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

In 1990, they moved to Webberville to be closer to family and raise their sons. She enjoyed cooking, working in her yard, going to Lake Michigan with her mother in-law Marlena Smyth, being outside in the sun, good food and simply being with her family, best friend Amy Westbrook-Stevens and cousin Terry (Adair) Baxter.

She will be missed more than words can say. Her memory will live on through family & friends and our lives will forever be enriched by her love. To know her was to love her.

Fowlerville 1st United Methodist Church holding Longest Night Service Dec. 21
Fowlerville 1st United Methodist Church invites you to a
Longest Night Service, Wednesday, Dec 21, at 7pm.
Some of you might be wondering what the “Longest Night” service is?
It recognizes that the winter solstice (Dec 21) is the longest period of darkness for our part of the world. The Christmas season is often marked by expressions of joy, excitement, and happiness. It’s a time for family to gather and for churches to worship pointing to the hope that is found in the coming of the Christ child. However, this service also recognizes the “darkness” that many people go through at this time of the year, things such as: grief over the loss of a loved one, illness, divorce, loss of a job, loss of a home and other things too numerous to mention. Having suffered loss such as this, it can be a difficult time for many of us.
If you find yourself longing for the light of a “new day” the light of Christ, you will not be alone as we share in the liturgy of prayer and reflection on the longest night of the year. Fowlerville 1st UMC is located at 201 S Second St. If you have questions, please contact the church office at 517-223-8824.

Raymond James “Jim” Cook, 80, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at his home in Kewadin. Jim was born on June 4, 1936 in Howell, the son of Raymond and Eva (Allbright) Cook. He graduated from Howell High School in 1954 and then received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from Michigan State University and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho. Jim was a NCAA National Champion gymnast, specializing in the rings and pommel horse. At a young age, he earned his pilot’s license and ran a huge dairy farm in Howell, caring for several hundred cows. Through MSU he was proud to participate in experimental housing projects for cattle.
In the 1970’s, Jim moved to northern Michigan where he worked for the Department of Agriculture in the Farmer’s Home Administration. Fowlerville gymnast captures first place all-around title at championships
Landen Blixt, a 12-year-old Level 9 gymnast at Brighton’s Infinity Gymnastics Academy, took first place all-around title at the 2016 Future Stars National Championships in Colorado Springs, Colorado with a total score of 84.95 out of 90.
Blixt, who lives with his family in Fowlerville and competes against 13-year-olds, placed in the top three for all events with Floor, Pommel Horse and Trampoline being his first-place events. He will head back to Colorado to participate in the special Future Stars camp to be held at the US Olympic Training Center next summer, an opportunity only offered to the top three gymnasts in his division.
Blixt, who started in a Parent Tot program at Infinity Gymnastics Academy when he was just two-years-old, has risen to be one of USA’s leading gymnasts in his age group. Blixt is coached by George Gagua who has earned honors as “Michigan’s Coach of the Year” for three straight years.
Coach Gagua attributes Blixt’s success to his dedication to the sport. “Landen has been in the Future Stars Program for the past five years and has made National team for the past three years. It has taken long hours of practice and a lot of patience, hard work, and determination to achieve such a high level in gymnastics, Coach Gagua stated.
The Future Stars National Championships showcase top 10-, 11-, 12- and 13-year-old male gymnasts who perform special Future Stars competition routines on all Olympic gymnastics events. Elite gymnasts are evaluated on skill, strength and flexibility. Based on the results at the championships, USA Gymnastics identifies the Junior National Developmental Team, which includes the top six gymnasts in the 13-year-old division. The program is designed to identify talented athletes and to start them on the right developmental path to national and international success.
A big “CONGRATULATIONS” goes out to Landen! Chances are this won’t be the last time you read about him.

Eugene Charles Melchiori
Eugene Charles Melchiori called his final play on November 13, 2016 in Vero Beach, Florida. Gene was born May 16, 1928 in Stambaugh Michigan and married Jo Broslavick on April 7, 1951. Together they raised four children: Tomye (Ron Daly), Steve (Holly), Chuck (Janice) and Rick (Nancy). Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Andrew (Jennifer) Daly, Kate (Jeromie) Ortiz, Nick (Britney) Melchiori, Matt (Kala) Melchiori, Whitney (Chris) Vishey, Bryce Melchiori, Chris Melchiori, and four great grandchildren: Shane, Vivian, Roan and Julian. Gene graduated from Stambaugh High School and then attended Western Michigan University before completing his undergrad degree at Northern Michigan University. He then served his country during the Korean conflict before beginning his teaching career in Norway. Gene received his master’s degree in counseling at Michigan State University and became a Spartan for life. His entire professional career was spent at Norway High School as a teacher, coach, athletic director and counselor. He touched the lives of countless students.
He had several highlights during his tenure as a coach and educator including leading the 1971 Knights to an undefeated season, being named U.P. Coach of the Year and later being inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame. His 1984 golf team won the Upper Peninsula Golf Championship. However, most importantly, he encouraged many students to go on to higher education and pursue their dreams. The many students who called him Coach and returned to visit and reminisce were very special to him.
Gene loved the Packers, Spartans, golfing, hunting camp, playing softball and listening to the family tell stories about their adventures and escapades around the dinner table. He showed kindness and compassion to everyone he met.

Williamston Memorial Lutheran to hold Nativity Scene on Saturday, Dec. 10
Members of Memorial Ev. Lutheran Church in Williamston invite you to our Live Nativity. Travel back in time and imagine the small town of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. Roman soldiers are at the city gate and walking the street of the town. They will register your family for the census ordered by Caesar Augustus.
As you drive through or walk the crowded and narrow street, you will see the bustling marketplace and the vendors busy in their shops. The townspeople are gathered by fires and talking about what has happened. In a stable there is a family with their newborn child.
Shepherds are watching their flocks beyond the town. They talk in excited yet hushed voices about seeing angels, and how the angels spoke of the very special baby, our Savior, who’s just been born.
Scripture will be read and songs will be sung. Even though we’ve set the stage, this isn’t a play. You will be witnessing a re-creation of the night our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was born and the miracle of Christmas as it all began.
Enjoy the visit but don’t plan to stay overnight. The inn and town are full!
The city gates are open from 5:30-7:30 PM on December 10 and admission is free, just like God’s mercy and grace to you. Invite your family, friends and neighbors! (1022 W. Grand River Avenue - Call 517-655-2294 for more information.

Help The Salvation Army create memories this holiday season
For most, early November is the start of their holiday season; Thoughts of family gatherings to include turkey and cranberry sauce, shopping followed by gift wrapping and creating memories to last a life time.
At The Salvation Army we also begin thinking of turkey and cranberry sauce, shopping and gift wrapping to begin the holiday season. However at The Salvation Army, the beginning of November also includes Red Kettles and the glorious sound of ringing bells all to create memories of hope and joy for struggling families in Livingston County. Each year The Salvation Army of Livingston County rings bells outside of Walmart and Kroger, VG’s and Walgreens and many other locations. As shoppers go in and out of the stores, they pass the sounds of laughter from children of all ages, adults with smiling faces and welcoming greetings and the feeling of love and hope that each kettle brings.
The Salvation Army cannot do it alone and are asking for your help. With a little over 5400 hours of bell ringing still remaining this November and December, we are asking you to add The Salvation Army Bell Ringing to your holiday “to do” list. Help create memories that will last a life time, not only for you and your family, but for others that need a little hope this year.
Anyone interested in volunteering to bell ring and not able to stop in may sign up online, www.RegistertoRing.com. Organizations wishing to take an entire day of bell ringing at one or several locations should contact Liz Welch directly 517-295-4347. Donations accepted via mail The Salvation Army P.O. Box 647 Howell, MI 48844, online or text Hope16 to 41444 | visit our website for more information www.salvationarmylivingston.org
