Another attraction at the fair is the Livingston Centre Historic Village. Volunteers will be on duty during the week to offer tours of the different buildings, dating back to the 1800’s, and explain their unique background.

Livingston County Farm Bureau, meanwhile, is hosting a ‘Farm at the Fair’ Exhibit located in the south end of the Dairy Barn during the week. Fair visitors will learn about Michigan agriculture when they see small-scale fields of corn, soybeans, wheat, oats and sugar beets. Also featured on the Farm are other famous Michigan crops like potatoes, cucumbers, apples, pumpkins, and bedding plants. Interesting farm facts are part of each display.

Although not a Michigan grown crop, a special exhibit traces cotton from the field to your t-shirt. Cows, pigs, sheep, goats, donkeys, rabbits and a horse are also part of the Farm exhibit. Children will be able to pet the calf and touch the goats.

Still another feature is the Bee Exhibit, providing information on the importance of bees to agricultural production. New this year will be a dairy-themed Story Walk about the making of ice cream.

The Wood Carver is another highlight of the fair, with Ben Risney creating his unique sculptures with a chain saw. He’ll be doing his work each day at a site located near the west entrance of the fairgrounds. On the final day—Saturday at 6 p.m.—his wood sulptures will be put up for bid. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these works of art will go to the Fowlerville Family Fair.

New this year will be ‘Rufus the Dufus’ (aka Chuck Clark), a strolling circus performer. He’ll be wandering around the midway during fair week, entertaining young and old with his various skills. These include juggling, riding a unicycle, magic tricks, object manipulation, and balancing acts, with a dose of humor interjected.

Livingston Centre Historic Village open to guests during this week’s fair

Among the many attractions at the Fowlerville Fair this week is the Livingston Centre Historic Village. Located to the north of the midway and west of the animal barns, the Historic Village consists of eight structures original to Livingston County. They were moved to the fairgrounds between 1986 and 1997.

Members of the Historic Village committee, and additional volunteers, will be offering tours inside most buildings on Wednesday, July 27 and Friday, July 29 between 1:00 and 7:00 pm. The Pere Marquette Depot will be open daily, with model trains showing post-WWII era rail lines.

There is no cost for any of these tours. Fairgoers can see these examples of early Livingston County life, and learn more of the way of local life between 1859 and 1910. It's a great way to take a short break from all the excitement of the Fowlerville Family Fair.

VETLIFE co-founder Cortnie Parish added that “There are so many veterans throughout this country that do not even know what benefits are out there.  Susan Jean Buys Spagnuolo

January 18,1940 - July 1, 2022

By Elizabeth Dudley

On January 18, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois a bright, shining star was born to Victor and Zada Buys. Susan Jean Buys came into this world to make it a better place, and boy did she ever! She excelled at school graduating from DeWItt High School at age 16 in June 1956. She was an accomplished pianist and a beautiful singer with a voice of an angel. She met the love of her life, Frank Spagnuolo, on a train to Chicago in August 1956 and they eloped that October. The two love birds went on to have 10 children, including 5 boys and 5 girls. They are: Susan (Paul) Charron, Frank (Angela) Spagnuolo, Mark (Tracy) Spagnuolo, Jennifer Fields, Cynthia (Enrique) Salfate, Elizabeth (Robert) Dudley, Pat (Adriana) Spagnuolo, Anthony Spagnuolo (deceased), Leticia Spagnuolo and Nicholas Spagnuolo.

When her husband Frank died of a heart attack in 1985, Susan carried on raising 5 children all under age 18 by herself. She was able to do it because she had earned two college degrees while raising a large family. She instilled the importance of education into her children and 9 out of the 10 have college degrees and the other child is a master of everything. If it is broken, he can fix it.

Sue graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Child Development and Education in 1970. She then taught first grade for 7 years at Fowlerville Community Schools. While teaching school and raising 8 children, she went to the University of Detroit Law School at night and got her degree in 1977. After graduating from Law School, she took a one-year hiatus and taught at an American School in Santa Cruz, Bolivia with her 8 children in tow. Her husband Frank visited often.

She returned to the United States in 1978 and in 1979, while she was 9 months pregnant with her 9th child, she wrote and passed the Michigan State Law Bar Exam on her first try. No one was surprised at this because she was such a smart cookie and a wonderful mother.

She practiced law in Howell Michigan from 1979 to 2018. Her favorite job was working for the Legal Aid Office of Livingston County. She loved helping people but hated charging them for her work. Legal Aid allowed her to help people that were financially challenged, and she loved the work. Sue always fought for the underdog and would take on any cause she felt that was unjust, especially if children were involved. She often said, “I love kids so much that I have 10 of my own.”

Sue was a devoted attorney and had a great respect for the law. She would often get a call from a client in a crisis and before you knew it, they would be joining the family for a meal or staying with us until they could find safe accommodations. She never made much money practicing law, but the joy of helping others was priceless to her.

She loved to travel and visited more than 20 countries. She traveled often after she retired, especially to Nepal, Turkey and Colombia. She loved the elephants, parrots, and monkeys. She was a brave and adventurous woman and made friends everywhere she went. She also loved taking her children, grandchildren, and friends to strange and exotic places if they were willing to join her. She had 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and loved them all dearly.

Sue led a full life and made a positive difference in the world. She made things happy and fun. Sue was a very colorful character and always did things her own way. Her life mattered and she touched so many people and improved so many lives. She is going to be sadly missed by all that knew and loved her. Rest in Peace Mother we loved you so much and our lives will never be the same. The sun will never feel as bright in a world without her.

She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest until her son Anthony and grandson Oliver died in 2021. Her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Pearl, was mauled and killed on May 28, 2022. These losses broke her heart, and she was never the same.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Spagnuolo; her son, Anthony Spagnuolo; her grandson, Oliver Salfate; her parents, Victor and Zada Buys as well as her brother, Don Buys, who died in a tragic car accident Christmas Eve 1957.

Sue lived to help people, especially those unable to help themselves. It was the reason God put her on this Earth.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you please consider donating to “Oliver Stones” which is a non-profit organization named after her grandson, Oliver. It supplies headstones to children and young adults whose families cannot afford one or theinfo@nepalelelphantssanctuary.org. This group provides care to elephants in Nepal.

Prayers for the family are greatly appreciated.

 Arlene Joanne Heberlein

Arlene Joanne Herberlein, a Haslett resident, passed away on June 15, 2022, surrounded by her daughters. She was 88 years old. She taught for several years at Fowlerville High School during the 1990’s

Arlene was a delight to know. She was gentle and caring and always had a smile to share along with words of encouragement. Beneath that exterior was a strong and solid faith combined with a keen intellect. This was evidenced even as a young teen when Arlene spent a year as a refugee living in the American Embassy in Poland as she sought asylum and ultimately to return home to her siblings in the US.

Once home, she attended the University of Chicago where she received a Bachelor’s in Library Science. There she met and married her husband Ernst Mueller. Later they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she got a Master’s in English at the University of Michigan, and had two daughters, Lisa Elizabeth and Kathlyne Jessica.

After Ernst returned to Germany, Arlene returned to school for a second Master’s in Special Education from Eastern Michigan University, and began teaching at Fowlerville High School. During this period, Arlene met and married Walter Heberlein. Arlene moved to Haslett, closer to Fowlerville, where she lived until her death.

The retired special education teacher continued to learn and assist others throughout her life. She was involved in many social activities and supported numerous local, national and international charities.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Arlene was being held Saturday, July 2nd at 11am at Okemos Community Church with a luncheon to follow in the Social Hall. Memorial gifts in honor of Arlene will be for the church. Arlene will be interred in the church memorial columbarium garden.

Livingston Centre Historic Village committee to meet July 5th at fair office

Committee members of the Livingston Centre Historic Village will meet Tuesday, July 5, 7:00pm at the Fowlerville Fair Office.

Those present will discuss the schedule for Fair Week. Staff and volunteers are needed to fill 2 - 4 hour shifts from Monday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Three buildings need volunteers to welcome guests during the six days. No experience is needed—there are printed materials to hand out that detail the history of the Village and its 8 buildings. Without adequate volunteers, some buildings will remain closed some of the time, leaving fairgoers to miss out on learning of Livingston County's history.

The agenda will also include initial planning for the Oct. 1st Fall Fest. The Saturday event is now accepting requests from food service groups and trucks, local musicians and artisans, arts and crafts vendors, as well as sellers of collectible items. More details will follow; watch your News & Views for continuing updates. Volunteers are also needed for this event—please consider joining in this fun day.
