Disposal of unused medications & used needles offered on           July 8th

The Big Red Barrel will be at Recycle Livingston on Saturday July 8, from 9 am to 1 am to collect unused medications and used needles. Recycle Livingston is located at 170 Catrell Drive in Howell. This is a free service. No questions asked. Put pills in a zip lock container, they can be mixed together. We prefer not to have the medicine container. Keep liquid medications separate. Dump into a zip lock bag with enough paper towel to soak up the liquid. Needles must be the proper disposal container, either purchased from a pharmacy or use a plastic laundry detergent bottle. Reseal the bottle and tape it. The Big Red Barrel Project is part of Livingston County Community Alliance.

Livingston County Genealogical Society holding zoom meeting on July 13th

The Livingston County Genealogical Society will meet via zoom, Thursday, July 13th, at 7pm. The program is “Eastern European Research for Beginners.” (Note date change due to Holiday week.)

Our guest speaker, Alexander Tolksdorf presents Research in Eastern Europe. Research can be difficult due to changing borders and many different groups in power throughout history. Alexander Tolksdorf’s talk will help make sense in researching the Baltic States, Belarus, Czechia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, and Ukraine.

A link to this virtual meeting may be found on our Facebook page for the Livingston County Genealogical Society a few days before the meeting. All are welcome."

Fowlerville to celebrate 4th of July with parade, fireworks, other activities

A parade, fireworks, and other activities will take place next Tuesday, July 4th, when Fowlerville celebrates Independence Day.

The schedule starts off with a Music Concert and combination Car, Motorcycle, and 4x4 Show at the Fowlerville Community Park during the early afternoon. Food Vendors will also be on site, beginning at 11:30 p.m.

The vehicle check-in begins at 11:30 a.m., with voting taking place from 1-3 p.m. and the awards announced at 3:30 p.m.

The concert starts at 12 noon, with Keith Ozment and Kari Holmes as the featured performers. DJ Mantis will be on hand as well to provide music during the interludes.

There is a $5 minimum suggested donation, with proceeds benefitting the 4th of July Fireworks Committee.

Along with these two events, the First Baptist Church is once again hosting their ‘God & Country’ Celebration from 2-6 p.m. A bounce house, bake sale, various games, and other ‘fun’ events will take place on the church grounds located on South Grand Avenue.

The evening parade that steps off at 7 p.m. and goes from the corner of West Grand River and Veterans Drive on the west end of town and proceeds along Grand River through the Downtown to the St. Agnes Catholic Church parking lot on the east side of the village. The parade sign-up and line-up begins at 6 p.m. on Veterans Drive, with the entry point being West Frank Street. Participants do not need to pre-register to take part in this event.

The parade, along with featuring a variety of entries and being led by the Grand Marshals, Gordon & Teena Munsell, includes the announcement of the ‘Smoky the Clown’ aka Allen Hale Award winner after the singing of the National Anthem.

The organizing committee began the award two years ago, with Butch Ogden selected as the first recipient and Jim Mayhew receiving the award last year. Hale, who passed away in 2011, was a founding member of the committee and headed the crew that launched the fireworks in 1976. He was a longtime member of the local fire department and an a member of the Webberville Village Council. As ‘Smoky the Clown,’ he took part in different community events, most notably at Kids Day during the Fowlerville Family Fair.

The award is given to someone who reflects Hale’s many years of involvement and commitment to this community.

The Munsells are longtime volunteers with Livingston County 4-H and the Fowlerville Fair, with Gordon also being a trustee on the Handy Township Board.

The Fowlerville United Brethren Church, meanwhile, will have a ‘4th of July Party’ that gets underway after the parade and continues until the fireworks. Live music, food, and summer treats are being offered at no cost. The church is located at 9300 W. Grand River, west of town.

As always, a fireworks display will conclude the celebration, with the show starting at dusk (around 10 p.m.).

Prime viewing areas are the Community Park and the Fowlerville Fairgrounds at DeForest Drive as well as the United Brethren Church. While entrance to those venues is free, a $5 donation to help pay for next year’s fireworks is requested.

Food trucks will be stationed in different areas of the community during the evening hours.

STAFF BOOK REVIEW

“See You Yesterday” by Rachel Lynn Solomon Review by Annessa Dimkoff

Star Rating:  Four Stars

When Barrett Bloom starts college on September 21st, she’s hoping it will be a fresh start after her experience with high school. But, after the worst first day ever, she wakes up the next morning to find herself right back at the beginning of September 21st. And, after a confrontation with Miles, a know-it-all guy in her Physics 101 class, she learns she’s not alone– and Miles has been trapped in September 21st for two months before Barrett got stuck.

Reading this book felt like sitting down to watch a cozy romantic comedy. You fall in love with the characters, and what they’re feeling, and hope that they make it out of their time loop. Barrett is an aspiring journalist, who isn’t afraid to speak the truth. Miles is a physics nerd and one of the most lovably geeky characters you’ll read. This young adult novel was a fun read, and I’m so excited to read more from Rachel Lynn Solomon.

Plans underway Livingston ESA’s ‘Backpacks for Kids/Connect for Kids’ Project

The Livingston Educational Service Agency is gearing up for our 22nd Annual ‘Backpacks for Kids’ Project. The ‘Backpacks for Kids/Connect for Kids’ Project provides basic school supplies, at no cost, to students in Livingston County whose families are experiencing financial difficulties. This event is made possible through the generous donations of our community members.

We are asking community members to please consider donating backpacks and/or school supplies for us to fill backpacks and provide to Livingston County children. On Friday, August 4, a Livingston ESA Bus will be at the Howell Wal-Mart from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Community members and families who are shopping for school supplies can pick up an extra set of pencils, pack of paper, or even a backpack as a contribution to the Annual Stuff the Bus Campaign.

We welcome donations for the 2023 Livingston ESA “Backpacks for Kids” project. You may drop off donations through August 4, 2023 at the Livingston ESA’s Education Center, located at 1425 West Grand River Avenue, Howell, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. You can also visit our website at LivingstonESA.org, click on Community Resources/ Backpacks for Kids to find additional drop off locations and information for donations.

Last year, approximately $15,000 in monetary and school supply donations helped us distribute over 1,000 backpacks to students from Preschool through 12th Grade. The goal this year is to again distribute 1,000 backpacks full of basic school supplies for Livingston County students whose families may be experiencing financial difficulties. Residents, churches and local businesses who contribute to this effort through donations, volunteer time, and serving as drop-off sites for supplies and backpacks help to make this event such a success.

Again this year, the Backpacks for Kids event will be held as a drive through event on August 10, 2023 at each of the five school districts. This change was made to provide easier access for families and school districts. Please look for additional information later regarding distribution details.

For additional information call (517) 540-6802 or visit our website: LivingstonESA.org and click on Community Resources.

 Brian DeNoyer

On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, Brian DeNoyer, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at age 59 at his home in Cocoa Beach, Florida with his family by his side.

Brian was born on July 6, 1963, in Detroit, MI to Charles and Judith (Kolar) DeNoyer. He was a graduate of Garden City West High School, and the Detroit Police Academy. Brian retired as Lieutenant from the Hamburg Township Police Department in Hamburg, MI and then went on to work as a police software trainer to departments around the U.S. On December 8, 1989, he married his Sunshine Stacia Rudnicki DeNoyer. Together they raised two sons, James (Ashley) of Colorado Springs, CO and Robert (Megan) of Oakdale, TN. Brian was the proud Pa of Koen DeNoyer.

Brian had a passion for riding his ATV, hunting, boating, swimming, and scuba diving. He had a hobby of metal detecting and was a firm believer in Oak Island; he was truly a bobby dazzler. He was an avid lover of music, known for his extensive play lists, and Rice Krispies/Fruity Pebble treats. Brian was able to spend his final days enjoying the beach and pool in the company of friends and family.

Brian is known for his goofy sense of humor and quick wit. He had an infectious smile, a kind and compassionate spirit, but he is best known for his love of family and friends. There never was a kinder soul.

In addition to Brian’s wife and sons, he is survived by his brothers Mark (Elaine) and Charles (Laurie), his aunt Christine Hayward, mother-in-law Kate Rudnicki, in-laws Pam Potter, Andie Lowinski, and Brad (Kris) Rudnicki along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Brian is preceded in death by several aunts, uncles, and father-in-law Richard Rudnicki.

Thank you to Dr. Monica Chatwal from Moffitt Cancer Center, Dr. Anthony DeBenedet from St. Joseph Hospital Ann Arbor, and the hospice team from Vitas, especially nurse Deborah Romero. A special thank you to all of Brian and Stacia’s friends and family for your support, compassion, love and understanding over the past five years.

A private graveside service will take place in July at the Greenwood Cemetery, Fowlerville MI.

Please make memorial contributions to St. Jude Childrens Hospital or the Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa FL.

Meals on Wheels needs volunteer drivers in Fowlerville area

The Meals on Wheels program needs volunteers in the Fowlerville area. Our current need is for Fridays. You deliver meals to the homebound seniors between 10am and 1pm. We would love the opportunity for you to be part of our team.

This is a commitment of 1-2 hours of your time as little or as often as your schedule will allow. Once a month, once a week, temporary, or on a continuous basis. Delivering meals to homebound seniors is a very rewarding experience.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! Come be part of our team.
