 David Clarence Jones, Sr.

David Jones, age 78, passed away at his home on Friday, April 15, 2022. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 9, 1943. Dave was the oldest of 11 children born to Lucy and Clarence Jones.

David and Paula Lee met in 1964 and were married January 23, 1965 (57 years). They moved to Fowlerville, Michigan in 1974. They had two sons: David Jones, Jr. and Scott Jones. David Jr. died 40 years ago in a vehicle accident on October 17, 1982 at Parkers Corners in Iosco Township. They have a grandson, Logan C. Jones, age 16, and granddaughter, Kayla M. Jones, age 12.

Dave worked for General Motors at Detroit Diesel in Detroit and GM Tech Center in Warren. He drove a lot of miles each day, enjoying the drive because he listened to his music. He loved watching movies—old and new. He retired from General Motors in 1998 at the age of 55 years.

He is survived by his wife Paula Jones; son Scott Jones; grandchildren Logan C. Jones and Kayla M. Jones; his siblings, Sharon Lane, Donald Jones (Karen), Laura Dumas (Bob), Bruce Jones (Jerry), Darlene Cadeau (Bill), Gerald Jones, Dale Jones (Jenny), and Harry Jones (Lori). He has many nieces and nephews as well as cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother Lucy, father Clarence, sister Linda, and brother Glenn.

A church service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 132 S. Benjamin St., Fowlerville. A gathering for everyone will be held at his home after the service. Please stop by.

 Christopher Michael Collins

Christopher Michael Collins, age 52, passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2022. Chris was a beloved father, husband, son, brother, teacher, and coach and will be remembered for the dedication, support, and inspiration that he provided to so many – family members, students, and players.

Chris was born on January 16, 1970 in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Dr. Michael Collins and Carolyn DeVore Collins, both of whom survive. He was a brother to Kathleen Collins (Jonathan Fields), Richard Collins, Deborah Collins, Andrew Collins, and Tamara Collins. Chris spent most of his younger years in Traverse City, Michigan. Early on, he found a passion for sports and participated at various points in his school career in soccer, track, and basketball.

He was also a member of the Traverse City band program and was an accomplished trumpet player, receiving recognition for his musical talent throughout high school. Chris’ first love has always been basketball. He was a varsity player at Traverse City High School and played one year collegiately at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. He also ran track for one year at Hope.

It was at Hope College that he met his wife, Nancy Conn Collins, when she was a statistician for the Hope College basketball program. Their love of sports generally and basketball specifically bonded them from the beginning. Chris graduated from Hope with an education degree in physical education and social science. He and Nancy were married on July 11, 1992.

Chris’ passion for teaching and coaching basketball led the newly married couple to the small town of White Pine, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. There he taught every student in the district physical education and social studies and coached varsity basketball. Their son, Carter, was born in Ironwood, Michigan in 1994.

Chris and Nancy made the decision to move closer to family and he accepted a physical education and varsity basketball coaching position at Benzie Central High School in 1995. He taught and coached at Benzie for four years and had much success, including a trip to the state basketball semifinal game in 1997. He received Regional ‘Coach of the Year’ honors as well as other awards during his tenure at Benzie. Their second son, Connor, was born in Traverse City in 1996.

In 1999, Chris and Nancy made their last move to Fowlerville where he was hired as a social studies teacher and varsity basketball coach. Caden was born shortly after they moved to Fowlerville in July of 1999. It was a challenge to switch from teaching physical education to social studies, but Chris found the hard work was so rewarding and he was able to inspire countless students to pursue career paths or further study in psychology and sociology. He began teaching AP Psychology seven years ago and his classes always scored incredibly high on the national AP exam. He took great pride in that and was so proud of all his students.

Chris coached varsity basketball for three years at Fowlerville and had great success with the program. He ultimately decided to step back and to coach his sons as they began to play competitively. He coached his sons for many years as they worked their way through the different levels of basketball. He enjoyed nothing more than watching their hard work and successes on the court.

All three of Chris’ sons went on to play a year of collegiate basketball at Hope College. Carter and Connor have gone on to coach at the college level and high school level, respectively. Chris enjoyed watching them coach every game he possibly could and was grateful for the ability to view many of the games online.

Chris enjoyed exercising and took great pride in his physical fitness. He loved watching the NBA and University of Michigan basketball games. He was the ultimate LeBron James fan, as anyone who knew him knows. He loved his cats and spent lots of time caring for and playing with them. He loved Fowlerville and felt it was his home. He treasured his relationships with his colleagues at the high school, especially having long conversations with Mr. Jonas.

Chris is survived by his wife, Nancy, sons – Carter (27), Connor (25) and Caden (22), his parents – Michael and Carolyn of Traverse City, his siblings – Kathleen Collins (Jonathan Fields), Rick Collins, Deborah Collins, Tamara Collins, and Andrew Collins, his brothers-in-law - Jonathan Fields, Brian Conn, and Mark Conn, nephews – Daniel Fields, Matthew Fields, and Noah Conn, nieces – Maya Fields and Lily Dailey, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father- and mother-in-law – Michael and Judith Conn, sister-in-law- Christi Diaz, nephew- Josh Diaz and niece- Mackenzie Conn.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Fowlerville Community Schools and designate “Chris Collins Basketball Scholarship”. It is our hope to establish an annual Chris Collins Memorial Scholarship for a basketball player with a special emphasis on an interest in Psychology or Sociology. Contributions should be payable to Fowlerville Community Schools.

A Memorial Service was held on Monday, April 25, at Fowlerville High School. Those attending the memorial were invited to dress casually and to wear Fowlerville ‘gold and purple’ clothing or a basketball jersey if possible. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Slotkin announces opening of Congressional Art Competition

Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) announced the opening of the 2022 Congressional High School Art Competition, an opportunity for students in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District to showcase their artistic abilities.

Students in grades 9-12 who reside or attend school in the 8th District are invited to prepare their work for submission during the month of April, with the winning entry to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

“I’m always amazed by the depth and breadth of talent, and the range of expression, by Michigan’s young artists,” Slotkin said. “The Congressional Art Competition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our students’ work to our entire community and to the Members of Congress, staff and visitors who walk through the Capitol every day.”

The winning selection will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one     year alongside artwork from students from across the nation. The       second-place piece will be displayed in Congresswoman Slotkin’s     Washington, D.C. office, and the third-place entry will hang in her     Lansing, MI office.

Artwork entered in the contest may be up to 26 inches by 26 inches,  up to 4 inches in-depth, and cannot weigh more than 15 pounds.

Acceptable artwork submissions include:

  • · Paintings – including oil, acrylics, and watercolor.
  • · Drawings – including pastels, colored pencil, pencil,    charcoal, ink, and markers (It is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)
  • · Collages – must be two-dimensional.
  • · Prints – including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints.
  • · Mixed Media – use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
  • · Computer-generated art.
  • · Photography.

Students must complete a release and information form which must   be attached to the back of the artwork.

Schools and students wishing to participate should contact Mona Shand at Mona.Shand@mail.house.gov. The congresswoman’s team will be collecting submissions from participating schools in early May, or by scheduled appointment.

In addition to having their art hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year, the first-place winner will also receive an invitation to attend a reception with other winners from around the country in Washington D.C. during the summer months. A reception in the district to celebrate the artwork and recognize the winners is planned for late Spring.

For more information on the Congressional Art Competition, the student release form, and full eligibility requirements for artwork, visit https://slotkin.house.gov/artcompetition.

Groundbreaking being held for new Fowlerville Fire Station on April 19

The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking of the new Fowlerville Fire Station at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. The ceremony will take place at the 5.6-acre building site, located on West Grand River, just west of Gregory Road.

Fire Chief Bob Feig said that construction will start “soon after,” with completion expected a year from now. The project, he said, has an estimated cost of around $6 million.

The 17,900 square-foot station will have five drive-thru bays that will house the department’s seven vehicles, with room for three more if needed.

“We’ll have five offices, a large training room and a small conference room,” Feig noted. “There’s also a kitchen, the restrooms with showers, and storage rooms.”

The department currrently has several members who work during the day, along with the paid-on-call firefighters. In anticipation that the station will eventually be staffed around-the-clock, the station will have two sleeping quarters and a small day room.

“We feel the new building should adequately handle our equipment and personel in the foreseeable future,” Feig said, “but there is room on the site to expand the building in the future.”

The new station will replace the hall on North Grand Avenue.

Along with the general public, the Fowlerville Fire Board, department members, local governmental officials, and area lawmakers are being invited to the event.

 Willow Rose Yon

Today, and every day, we will forever celebrate the life of Willow Rose Yon. She is a precious piece to the family of Paul, Denise, Gage, and Ava Yon. Willow is forever twenty-one years old.

On March 27, 2022, Willow was the victim to the actions of a wrong-way driver. Willow was miles from her apartment when the two cars collided on highway 131 near 28th Street in Grand Rapids. However, no such actions should receive more attention than Willow’s life.

At the time of the death, Willow was a third-year student at Kendall College of Art and Design. Her major, and passion, was with industrial design. She had recently completed six internship interviews that she was excited and confident about. Willow strongly felt that Grand Rapids was her place, and was proud of how she had made it on her own.

Prior to college, Willow attended Fowlerville High School. Throughout her early years, she was involved in 4-H, dance, and many art events. Willow was the artist that everyone knew and admired. The Yon family is now learning just how much Willow touched the lives of others. Many stories start with, “She was my first best friend…” She was encouraging, supportive, incredibly strong and bold, confident and outspoken. She also expressed passion for animals and clothing. The amount of clothes and shoes that Willow owns is probably not surprising to most people that know her. Willow has two pets of her own, one dog and one cat. Willow was, and still is, the most beautiful girl that shines her light on all of us everyday moving forward.

Willow is survived by parents: Paul and Denise Yon, siblings: Gage and Ava Yon, grandparents: Ron and Bonnie Holck, special aunt Christy Holck, many aunts and uncles she dearly loved, and many, many more family and friends.

If you would like to join us in celebrating Willow’s beautiful life, open visitation is Sunday, April 3rd, 2:00pm-4:00pm and Monday, April 4th, 9:30am-11:30am. A small, private family service will be held after visitation hours on Monday, at 11:30am. A GoFundMe has been created in order to preserve the memories made with Willow. https://www.gofundme.com/f/willow-rose-yons-family?sharetype=teams&member=18375797&pc=fb_co_campmgmt_w&rcid=r01-164856838363-74a2523caf7611ec&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=p_lico%2Bshare-sheet

 Nancy Lee Russell

Nancy Lee Russell of Williamston, Michigan passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 28, 2022. Nancy was born on April 30, 1945, to the late Ralph and Marian (Nolen) Stickle in Battle Creek, MI. She graduated from East Lansing High School and then received her teaching degree from the University of Michigan. Nancy married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) William Russell, on August 19, 1967, spending 54 years together.

Nancy and Bob started their lives in the East Lansing area, eventually finding and moving to their forever home in Williamston. Her teaching career began in 1967 working for the Lansing School District and then moved to East Lansing. In 1970, she took time off to enjoy many years at home raising her two young children. She returned to the classroom in 1987 at Fowlerville Community Schools, where she retired from teaching French in 2000.

After her retirement, Nancy enjoyed gardening, worked a part-time job at Christian’s Greenhouse and joined the Williamston Garden Club. Much of her time after that was absorbed in being a wonderful friend, great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, and wife. She treasured spending time with her six grandchildren here and up at the family cottage in Sutton’s Bay where many priceless memories were made. Nancy very much enjoyed traveling with Bob as well, visiting all but four states.

Their travels began with the MSU Hockey Road Crew following the hockey team to various schools in the Midwest. Some of their other traveling highlights included places such as Alaska, California, and numerous visits to Florida, always taking time to stop and visit friends and family along the way. Part of their travels were slow moving in their Ford Model A where they enjoyed meeting up with the Model A Club. Not only did Nancy enjoy her gardening, travels and family, she also created many cherished memories with her various friends she met along the way.

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Russell; her children Jennifer (Brian) Savage of Howell, Todd (Bridget) Russell of Williamston; her dearly loved grandchildren, Kylee Savage, Madison Savage, Alyssa (Caleb) Medina, Natalie Savage, Alexis Russell, and Emmalee Russell; her great-granddaughter Oaklee Medina; and her sister Barbara Stickle of Mill Valley, CA.

Visitation for Nancy will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, Williamston Chapel 205 E. Middle St., Williamston, MI 48895 on April 8, 2022, from 2 PM to 8 PM. The memorial service will be held at Williamston Free Methodist Church, 4400 Williamston Rd., Williamston, MI 48895 on April 9, 2022 at 12 PM. Nancy will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville, MI.
