Livingston County Democrats donate more than 7,800 meals for needy
Livingston County families who are struggling to put food on the table will have a little something extra this holiday season, thanks to the efforts of Livingston County Democrats.
Party members contributed to Gleaners Community Food Bank the equivalent of 7,847 meals for those in need. The donations came through on-line monetary gifts as well as contributions of cash, checks, and non-perishable food brought to the Democrats’ holiday party on Dec. 1.
“Donating to Gleaners is an annual tradition for local Democrats who believe that no one should go hungry during the holidays,” noted party chair Judy Daugbenmier. “It is part of the Democrats’ tradition of community involvement that includes more than 25 years of participation in the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Adopt-a-Highway roadside clean-up program and participation in OLSHA’s annual Walk for Warmth.”

Acoustic Café kicks off series with Stephen Clark this Friday, Jan. 4
The Acoustic Café kicks off is series on Friday, Jan. 4, with Stephen Clark. The performance will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Acoustic Café is an annual music series held at the historic Howell Opera House that features outstanding Michigan performers, now celebrating its 11th year!
Stephen Clark is familiar to local audiences as the former longtime anchor of WXYZ Detroit’s evening news. Stephen began his media career in 1977 as a DJ on country station KYOU in Colorado, and although he soon moved to television news, he maintained his love for the story-telling of country music and began writing his own (as he says) “largely forgettable” songs by learning to play the guitar to the records spinning on the turntables.
His broadcasting career has been his professional focus throughout the years, but he started getting serious about songwriting while working in San Diego around 1990, where he also began performing in coffee houses and eventually on bigger stages—opening for Willie Nelson, Tracy Byrd, and many others.
Following his retirement after 16 years as a news anchor at WXYZ Detroit, Stephen has been splitting his time between his family and pursuing his musical career in Nashville, where he is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International. In his words, “Songwriting is just another kind of journalism, where the goal is to tell a compelling story in an interesting way.”
Tickets for this show will be available for $10 at the door. Doors will open at 7:00 pm and the show will begin at 7:30 pm. The Acoustic Café series runs every Friday night from January 4th – March 1st.

Consumers Energy offers help with heating bills as winter arrives
With winter making an early arrival this year, Consumers Energy is reaching out to families and small businesses to help them take charge of their heating bills.
Consumers Energy is sharing information with customers this month about how to reduce energy use and find available assistance in their communities to help with bills. Cold weather often leads to higher heating costs as furnaces work to warm homes and businesses. Electric use can increase in winter, too, as electricity powers furnaces or is used to heat many homes.
“We want to help the people we serve to stay in control of their energy costs. Households and businesses can take steps to keep bills down while staying safe and warm during a Michigan winter,” said Brian Rich, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president of customer experience.
Consumers Energy has sent emails to hundreds of thousands of customers with tips to reduce energy use safely during cold weather. The energy provider and nonprofit agencies each winter also make proactive phone calls to households who are past due on payments, letting people know help is available now.     Last month, Consumers Energy contributed $2 million to help up to 2,500 Michigan households participate in its CARE program. CARE puts people in need on a path to self sufficiency, offering bill credits, forgiveness of past-due balances and access to energy-saving tools that can lower bills.
Consumers Energy encourages people to dial 2-1-1, a free statewide service that connects people with resources in their community. The 2-1-1 helpline and website refer people to resources in their community, including energy bill assistance.
“Our natural gas costs remain 60 percent lower than a decade ago, but we know that many people still face challenges to pay their heating bills,” Rich said. “Consumers Energy wants to help. We strongly encourage people to take action today if they want to reduce their energy costs or need help to stay warm.”
