Fowlerville Community Theatre to perform ‘The Music Man’ May 2-3-4

Fowlerville Community Theatre is thrilled to bring to the stage The Music Man at the Alverson Center for the Performing Arts at Fowlerville High School.

Show dates and times are as follows: Friday, May 2nd at 7pm, Saturday, May 3rd at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday, May 4th at 2pm.

Meredith Willson’s beloved musical The Music Man marches into town with toe-tapping tunes, colorful characters, and a story full of heart. Set in 1912 in the fictional River City, Iowa, the show follows fast-talking con man Harold Hill, who poses as a band leader to swindle the townspeople into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he never intends to lead.

But Harold’s plans hit a snag when he meets Marian Paroo, the sharp-witted librarian and music teacher who sees through his act. As he tries to win her over—and avoid exposure—Harold unexpectedly finds himself falling for her, and for the town itself. In the end, love, music, and community spirit triumph in this timeless crowd-pleaser filled with unforgettable songs like “Seventy-Six Trombones,” “Till There Was You,” and “Ya Got Trouble.”

This amazing cast of 47 people range in age from six to adult. The show is visually stunning, from the costumes to the sets and props! You will not want to miss this fun, family friendly show!

Tickets are $20. They may be ordered online or at the door! Cash, check, or Venmo accepted at the door. Online tickets may be ordered at: www.FowlervilleTheatre.com

Eddie ‘Ed” Jeffrey

Eddie Otis Jeffrey, known to many as Ed, raced his last race in this world on April 14, 2025, at U of M Health - Sparrow Hospital, with the same dignity and grace that he carried throughout his life. Ed was born on June 11, 1951, in Howell, Michigan, to the late Lester Duffer Jeffrey and Mary Elsie Gould, where he established deep roots and became a cornerstone of the community.

As a graduate of Webberville High School, Ed demonstrated early on his passion for mechanics. He furthered his expertise by attending trade school, setting the stage for what would become a fulfilling lifelong career in the automotive field. Ed's professional journey began in 1973 at Bob Smith Ford in Fowlerville, where his dedication and skill quickly became apparent. He took numerous Ford classes to keep his skills updated. After nearly three decades of service, he took a leap of faith, and launched Jeffrey Automotive in 2001, where he remained at the helm until his retirement in 2021. His commitment to his work and customers was not merely a job but a testament to his character.

Ed leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Kathy and their children, April (Todd) Siegel, Curtis (Holly) Holmes, and Chad Holmes. His legacy flourishes through his eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who gave him immeasurable joy and pride. He also leaves behind his lifelong best friend, Rich Kurchin, and his wife Amy; sister Darlene, along with his nephews, a niece, and cousins. Ed gave his unwavering support and guidance to all of his family and his many friends.

He is reunited in passing with his parents, Lester and Mary, as well as his brother Milo.

Ed's zest for life went beyond his professional achievements. His love for drag racing was more than a hobby. He started a business called, Jeffrey Racing, LLC, and had many sponsors. His passion took him to racetracks across the state, including Milan, Onondaga, and Mid-Michigan. His fondness for fast cars and his youthful days of street racing were eclipsed only by the love he had for his customers and the friendships he forged through his automotive endeavours. To Ed, work never truly felt like work because he loved what he did, and it showed to everyone who crossed his path.

Throughout his life, Ed's integrity resonated with the sense of community that he cultivated, making friends through every facet of his life. He was known for his sense of humor, his generous spirit, and his ability to recall and tell a story in a way that would leave everyone smiling.

Ed lived a life in alignment with success, by all accounts, is the hallmark of Ed's time among us, for he lived by this principle and, in doing so, touched the lives of every person lucky enough to have known him.

Ed Jeffrey—husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, and community pillar—will be dearly missed, yet his memory and the indelible impact he had on those around him will endure forever. He will be remembered as a man who not only mastered the art of automotive maintenance but also the art of maintaining lasting and loving relationships with all he knew.

Online condolences and pictures may be shared with the family at www.WatkinsFuneralHomes.com

The family is being served by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Perry Chapel.

Fowlerville Family Fair announces Extreme Open Class Makeover

By Dawn Bhajan,

Superintendent of Fowlerville Family Fair

Open Class Home Arts

Everyone loves a good makeover story – a dilapidated cabin turned cozy getaway, a rusted-out junkyard find turned car show cruiser, a social wallflower turned prom queen. We humans love to give new life to repurposed things and to see their potential bloom. How exciting, then, to have a tale of total transformation taking place right now in our very own Fowlerville Fair…

If you’ve been following this article series, you already know where we started from… an Open Class program cancelled in 2023 on the heels of a steep, post-2020 decline. Open Class is our Fair’s Livestock and Home Arts competitive classes, open to ALL Michigan residents ages 5+ (no memberships/affiliations required), in which animals, arts, crafts, canning, baked goods, plants, collections—and other entries made or cultivated by you—have a chance to win ribbons and cash awards.

To have this program come roaring back in 2024 with such vigor shows just how much our community values this deeply-rooted, all-inclusive showcase of community talent!

As our Extreme Open Class Makeover continues into 2025, you’ll spot all sorts of exciting transformations, starting with a major overhaul of our Open Class Entry Book, which is NOW AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE at www.fowlervillefamilyfair.com/fair/open-class!

Registration will open June 16th and run through July 1st.

In addition to a complete reorganization and clean-up, look for over 100 brand new competitive Classes in the Entry Book, such as Farm Display (1/64th scale), Sourdough Bread, Illustrated Poem, Handmade Costumery, Sports Memorabilia Collection, Paint-by-Number, Upcycled Paper/Cardboard Art, T-Shirt Quilt, Native Plants Arrangement, Macramé, and Homemade Cider. And that’s just to start!

In one bold stroke, we’ve restructured the Photography Department to feature both Professional and Amateur Classes. This means more chances to win and an opportunity to compete with peers in Open Class’ most popular Department.

Also new this year, our coveted Best of Show ribbons, awarded to entries demonstrating exceptional merit within their Section (group of Classes), now also come with a $10 cash award in addition to the 1st place ribbon premium and a frameable Award Certificate.

Our low- and no-tech friends will be delighted to hear that mail-in paper entry forms are BACK in the 2025 Open Class Entry Book as an alternative to online registration.

And even beyond Entry Book changes, there are improvements to Entry Tags, Exhibit drop-off schedules, registration timelines, the Exhibitor Reception, and much more. You can stay up-to-date on all these exciting changes by joining our “Fowlerville Fair Open Class Home Arts” Facebook group, staying tuned to Fowlerville News & Views, AND now also signing up for our brand new monthly/semi-monthly E-mail Newsletter containing the latest Open Class highlights, critical intel, fun trivia, people-to-know, and helpful resources. Enter your email at http://eepurl.com/iSEgT2 to make sure you don’t miss a single Open Class update.

Best of all, this is a makeover story that YOU get to be a part of – as Exhibitors, Volunteers, Sponsors, and visitors to the Open Class Exhibits. Let us know how you would you like to be involved!

For questions, ideas, and interest in sponsorship or volunteering, please contact me at (810) 923-4582 or dawnbhajan@gmail.com.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beverlee Ann Smyth, and his children: Tom Smyth (Krista Bauby), Christopher Smyth, and Jennifer Smyth. He was also a proud stepfather to Tracie (Arletus) Fountain, Tonya (Craig) Woodward, Paul Shaposka Jr., Kimberly Shaposka, and Robert Copeland.

Carl leaves behind eighteen cherished grandchildren, with two great-grandchildren on the way, as well as his brothers Dan Smyth (Jan), Jesse Smyth (Mary), and Jerry Smyth, and countless extended family members and dear friends who loved him.

Born in Howell, Michigan, Carl lived a life rooted in service and community. He proudly served as a Deputy with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department for 27 years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community for his dedication, quiet strength, and unwavering integrity.

Carl had a lifelong fascination with science fiction and space exploration, especially Star Trek. One of his favorite adventures was visiting the NASA Space Center in Houston—a trip that combined his love for travel, learning, and sharing wonder with his wife. Whether embarking on road trips to Lake Michigan, spending time with family, or slipping a dad joke into conversation, Carl found joy in the simple, meaningful moments.

He had a deep love for movies, history documentaries, Michigan sports teams, and music partic-ularly the kind that gave him a chance to show off his signature dad dance moves. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life. Carl loved Jesus and trusted wholeheartedly in God's plan. He was a man of quiet strength, quick humor, and a heart that embraced everyone he met. He never complained, always cared, and made it his mission to help others—saving lives and lifting spirits wherever he went.

Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, followed by a funeral service at 12:30 p.m., at Herrmann Funeral Home, 1005 E. Grand River, Fowlerville, MI.

Carl will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.

 Leniol L. White

Leniol L. White, who left a lasting impression on everyone he met, passed away peacefully at his home on April 1, 2025. Born to Guy and Flora White in Elkins, West Virginia, on October 13, 1937, Len was a natural-born family leader, the eldest of his five siblings: brothers David, John, Tom, and Jim, and sister L'Reta Albright.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, first wife Doris "Mopsy" White, their son, Leniol Jr., and their daughter, Terry.

Len's warm spirit will lovingly surround his wife, Barbara DeLatorre and family; his adoring daughter, Kelly White-Watson; his grandson, Nathan Watson (Jessica); and great-grandchildren, Brinley and Matthew; granddaughter, Morgan Watson, and great-grandsons Andrew and Austin; along with countless nieces, nephews, and limitless friends he gathered throughout his life.

Len was known for his entrepreneurial drive, evident in his long career as an independent State Farm Insurance agent in Westland, MI, where he built his business on a foundation of personal connection and genuine care for his clients and their families. Beyond his professional life, Len was a dedicated spouse, father, and "papa," a loyal founding church member, and an avid outdoorsman, regaling friends and family with his fantastic hunting and fishing stories.

In his leisure time, he traveled the open road with good friends as a hobby motorcyclist, pursued his passion for conservation, and found joy in the natural world by cultivating a thriving garden of which he always shared his bounty, and Len never missed an opportunity to slip a treat to a furry friend! A true friend to many, human and dog alike, Len was full of gratitude, quick-witted, remembered everyone's name, and made everyone he knew feel valued. We will fondly remember his chipper, big personality, kind nature, and generous heart. To all who knew and loved him, his cheerful "cheerio, pip-pip, tally-ho" will echo in our hearts!

A memorial service will be held at Pinckney Community Congregational UCC, 125 E. Unadilla St., Pinckney, MI 48169, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com.

 Janice Eileen Wakeman

Our loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Janice Eileen Wakeman, 75, of Fowlerville, MI, was called home to the Lord on March 16, 2025. Janice was born February 12, 1950 in Howell, MI.

Janice grew up in Howell and was the fourth out of five children. She graduated from Howell High School in 1968 and then went on to Olivet Nazarene College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. Janice was a teacher for 17 years, 14 of those years at Fowlerville Community Schools. She had a passion for music, teaching children, and serving in her church, most recently as an attendee of Argentine Church of the Nazarene.

Janice met Martin (Rusty) Wakeman in 1974 on a blind date, and the couple was married a year later on March 22, 1975. They had four children and resided in the Webberville/Fowlerville area. The real loves of Janice’s life were her 10 grandchildren. She found the most joy out of life in sharing her love of reading and music with them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Loleta Smith; her sister, Mary Lou Harrison; and her daughter, Alison Wakeman.

Surviving is her husband of 50 years, Martin Wakeman, and her three children, Amanda (Matthew) Way, Bart (Paula) Wakeman, Bret (Jennifer) Wakeman, along with her brothers, Wally (Joan) Smith, Gene (Judy) Smith, Don (Denise) Smith and brother-in-law Rick Harrison; ten grandchildren, Austin (Kelsey) Wakeman, Tori (Alex) Sutliff, Isaac Way, Logan Wakeman, Madison Wakeman, Gabby Wakeman, Ethan Way, Dean Wakeman, Jack Wakeman, Gibson Way, and great-grandson, Oliver Wakeman.

 Tammie Marie Hughes

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tammie Marie Hughes, age 62, of Webberville. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and friend to many. Tammie went to be with the Lord on March 25, 2025, at McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones.

Tammie was born on October 9, 1962, in Gaylord, Michigan, to Thomas and Donna (Maslowski) Mankowski. She spent her childhood and teenage years exploring the world with her three sisters, affectionately referred to as the "Mankowski girls." After graduating from St. Mary Cathedral School in 1980, Tammie pursued a career in the insurance industry.

In the summer of 1980, Tammie moved to Fowlerville, Michigan, where she met the love of her life, Douglas Edison Hughes. The couple married on April 19, 1986, and they described it as the best day of their lives. When you marry your best friend, partner, and soulmate, no day can compare to that special moment. Family and friends understood how special their relationship was; their love for one another was genuine and profound.

Tammie was a shining light in the lives of everyone she knew. Her journey through life was defined by love, compassion, understanding, strength, and wisdom, all grounded in her unwavering faith in God. Her passing will leave a profound void in the hearts of those she loved and cared for the most. To know Tammie was to know love, plain and simple. She embraced life fully, living each day as if it were her last. Family and friends could always rely on her to be there, no matter who they were or the occasion. Her beautiful smile lit up any room she entered, and she had a lovely and calming aura. Her zest for life was truly admirable.

Tammie valued her date nights with her husband, where they enjoyed dinners out and played her lucky Keno tickets. Her grandchildren were the center of her world, evident in her daily actions. No matter what she had planned, she would drop everything to be there for her son, daughter, and grandchildren. Tammie loved watching her oldest grandson, Keegan, play sports, and she enjoyed sledding with her granddaughter, Jamie. She cherished her snuggle time with her grandkids, Bryce, Elsie, and Carson. Tammie's hobbies included camping, playing bingo, golfing, shopping, playing cards, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Tammie is survived by her husband of 38 years, Douglas Hughes; son, Ryan (Karen) Hughes; daughter, Miranda (Jeffrey) James; grandchildren, Keegan, Jamie, and Carson Hughes; Bryce and Elsie James; and Ashlyn Kulas; sisters, Jackie (Bill) McShosh, Cindy (Rusty) Huff, and Kelly (Mike) Ford; sister-in-law, Cathy (Jeff) Elliott; brothers-in-law, Randy (Janice) Hughes and Floyd (Helen) Hughes; nieces and nephews, Jena (Adam) Daning, Lucas (Kellie) McShosh, Kaitlin (Adam) Kroll, Blake (Leah) Huff, Madeline McShosh, Hannah (Nick) Leech, Brandon (Madison) Huff, Jacob Ford, Ty Ford, Russell (Hallie) Elliott, Cody (Nikki) Elliott, Joshua (CJ) Elliott, Christalina Hughes, Tommy Hughes, Jason Hughes; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Donna Mankowski, and in-laws, Floyd and Donna Hughes.

An intimate ceremony will be held in April, and a Celebration of Life for family and friends is planned for the summer.

In lieu of flowers, we kindly request donations for a college fund for the grandchildren: Douglas Hughes, PO Box 163, Webberville, Michigan, 48892.

Until we meet again, rest in peace.

Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Webberville Community School’s Spring Carnival returns   April 11th

Webberville Community Schools are gearing up for its highly anticipated Spring Carnival, and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever!

The Spring Carnival will be held at the elementary school from 5:30-7:30pm, where all members of the community are invited to join in this fun annual Webberville tradition. Hosted by the Webberville District Boosters, it promises to be an evening of exciting activities, delicious treats, and a chance to support a great cause.

One of the highlights of the carnival is the variety of carnival games available for all ages. Younger kids will enjoy classic games with fun prizes and the ever-popular bounce house will be on hand to provide bouncy fun and giggles. Older children can take on more challenging activities like skeeball and axe throwing, so the whole family can compete for bragging rights.

The dunk tank will also make its return this year, where staff members from the school volunteer to take a plunge at the hands of the students! It’s always a crowd favorite, and students are excited to get the chance to dunk their teachers for a good cause. Who will take the plunge this year? You’ll have to come out and find out!

As the Webberville District Boosters’ biggest fundraiser of the year, the Spring Carnival also includes an exciting silent auction that’s not to be missed. The auction will feature unique baskets, each thoughtfully assembled by contributions from students and families, along with fantastic items donated by local businesses, such as Lavo Spa, Impression 5 and High Caliber Karting. The auction is an opportunity to support the school and help fund important programs and activities for students.

All proceeds go towards enhancing the educational experience for students at Webberville Community Schools, so don't miss out on this fun-filled, family-friendly event! Bring your friends, family, and neighbors to the Webberville Community Schools Spring Carnival for a day of games, food, laughter, and giving back. It’s the perfect way to kick off the season and create lasting memories. See you there!
