Karen Lee Kunde

Karen Lee Kunde, 56 of Fowlerville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at home.

Karen married the love of her life Paul Frederick Kunde on July 26, 2003, and they were together for 19 amazing years.

Born in Farmington Hills, Karen was the daughter of George and Lois White. She attended school in Farmington Hills, where she graduated. Then she proceeded to go to Specs Howard Broadcasting School and worked for a time in radio broadcasting.

When the Grille in the Ville opened in December of 2012, Karen started working there as a waitress. She knew her customers well and really brightened up the dining room with her cheerful personality and smile. Karen continued at the restaurant until its closing on March 19, 2020. She then worked for Fowlerville Feed & Pet Supplies.

Karen loved to go camping with all her friends and her husband with their vintage camper and truck. She enjoyed hanging out around the campfire and just having fun. She also loved riding around in the combine with her husband during harvest season.

Words cannot express how kind and caring Karen was. She would do anything for anyone as she had a giant heart and loved life.

Karen was preceded in death by her father George White and stepdaughter Carrie Kunde.

She is survived by her mother Lois White, husband Paul Kunde, brother Mike White, sister Susan Bolan, stepdaughters Sarah Sexton and Christine Kunde, niece Hayley Bolan, and nephew Jamie Bolan.

Celebration Recovery hosting panel discussion on mental health issues

Celebrate Recovery, a local recovery program, is hosting a panel discussion regarding mental health issues in adults this Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Fowlerville United Brethren Church.

Celebrate Recovery is a 12-step program based on eight principles from the Beatitudes. Areas of recovery focus on alcoholism, divorce, sexual abuse, codependency, drug addictions and many other areas that cause us to struggle.

“In 2022 the National Celebrate Recovery Team focused on the effects of mental health which is showing an increase in our society, both young and old,” said Sue Kretchman, head of the local program. “By offering this special event, we hope to bring continued awareness that there is no shame for those who currently are under care for any issue related to mental health or have a loved one in these circumstances. CR is not a counseling service and it is not our goal to “fix” anyone. We are a safe, confidential ministry program that comes alongside people who are working on becoming more healthy.”

The panel will be made up of several individuals who have or currently attend CR every week. Each person will give a mini-testimony of their experiences and how attending CR has helped them find help with their struggles. There will also be time to ask questions.

Celebrate Recovery is for all adults age 18 and older. A meal is offered at 6 pm (suggested donation of $4) To ensure we have enough food please call 517.223.9490 or email: celebraterecovery@fowlervilleub.org. Following the meal, the program will begin at 7 pm.

All weekly meetings are held on Tuesdays at Fowlerville United in Brethren in Christ Church, located at 9300 W. Grand River Ave. For more information about CR, please email: celebraterecovery@fowlervilleub.org or find us on Facebook at Celebrate Recovery Fowlerville UB.

 Susan Rae Gamber

Susan Rae Gamber, aged 70, passed away on October 12, 2022, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born on December 12, 1951 in Howell, MI and raised in Fowlerville, MI. She attended Grand Valley State University (then Grand Valley State College) to earn her undergraduate degree in sociology and attended the University of Michigan for her Master of Social Work. She lived much of her adult life in Kalamazoo, working for many years as a social worker for the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital and later for the Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing. Throughout her career, she transformed the generosity, compassion, and service to others that were the core values of her life into caring and advocating for those unable to care and advocate for themselves.

Outside of work and after her retirement, she maintained an active social life, and she is survived by friends she treasured and who treasured her in equal measure. Her wide-ranging interests spanned mystery novels to current cinema, celebrity gossip to local theater. Anyone who met her will remember her for her intellect that was fierce but never condescending, her wit that was quick and creative but never cruel, and her spirit that was independent and uncompromising but never uncharitable. Those who were fortunate enough to be counted among her family and friends will remember her, too, for her loyalty, her devotion, her enthusiasm for life’s joys and her solace and strength during its challenges. She will be dearly missed as a sister, an aunt, a mother, and a friend.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Iris (Dennis) Gamber, and a brother, Richard Gamber, and his wife Irene M. Kazieczko.

She is survived by her son, Ian McCaul of Ann Arbor; sisters, Mary Jo (Michael) Barrett of Webberville and Marcia Gamber of East Lansing; nephews, Jason (Rebecca) Barrett of Williamston and Brad (Kerri) Barrett of Webberville; niece Erin Gamber-Johnson of East Lansing; and great nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

A visitation took place at Joldersma and Klein Funeral Home in Kalamazoo, MI on Wednesday, October 19th from 2-4 p.m. A graveside service was held at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville, MI at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 20th. Those looking to honor Susan’s memory are encouraged to make donations in her name to Gryphon Place in Kalamazoo.

 Jean Anne Tomlin

Jean Anne Tomlin was born to Arthur Maynard Bird Sr. and Lois Marion (Young) Bird on November 22, 1936 and passed away surrounded by family on August 28, 2022, aged 85.

She is survived by her sister, Rebecca (Kenneth) Niblock, and her five children, Judith (Jerry) Martin, Susan (Bryon) Courter, Kathy (George) Duncan, Mary Beth (John) Bowman, and Marvin (Stacy) Tomlin Jr.; as well as 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Marvin Rex Tomlin Sr., brother Arthur Bird Jr.; grandchild J.J. Martin; and great-grandchild Kolt Martin.

Growing up, Jean could always be found in the dairy barn helping her father with their guernsey cows—much preferring to be in the barn than in the house. She also showed cattle at the Fowlerville Fair and played the trumpet in the Howell High School band. Jean married Marvin Sr. in 1967 and together they raced harness horses and kept an active farmstead north of Fowlerville, including continuing the 4-H tradition with her kids and grandkids.

She worked at Utilex Manufacturing in Fowlerville for a number of years and went on to be a beloved school bus driver for Fowlerville Schools for 18 years before her retirement and move to Texas. When she wasn’t working on or off the farm, Jean loved to cook, play the piano, and oil paint—selling her paintings at many art fairs in the late 1970’s and 80’s. Anyone who knew Jean also knows how passionate she was about her lineage, learning as much as she could about the genealogy of her parents and recalling numerous stories told to her in her youth. Her family is proud for her to be a part of their ancestry and will continue to tell her stories for generations to come.

A celebration of life for Jean will be held at the family farm on July 8, 2023.

 Ruth Berry

Ruth Berry died October 3, 2022. She was the daughter of Will and Clara Berry. Her sisters: Angelyn Jones, Grace Lowe and Marion Jackson have preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces Linda Lowe and Jean Lawrence and nephew Clark Jones.

Ruth grew up in the Fowlerville area and graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1947. Immediately following graduation, she began work at Michigan Bell Telephone Company. Her career lasted nearly 35 years and she retired from the Lansing, Michigan office. She then moved to Fort Myers, FL where she lived happily for 32 years and enjoyed year around warm weather.

Ruth was well known as a talented pianist and organist. She was very active as a church musician most of her life. She loved to travel and visited 54 countries and all 50 states. In 2015 she returned to Lansing where she lived the rest of her life.

She was proud to have been a direct descendant of some of the earliest local settlers in Livingston County. The first arrived prior to 1840 and took up land from the government in Iosco Township. Others arrived soon after and purchased land in Handy Township. Ruth was a member of the DAR and located 10 direct ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War. Her maternal grandparents immigrated from Denmark and her grandfather, N.P. Jensen, operated the Jensen Photography Studio for many years.

Private graveside services were presided over by Pastor Mark McCormick of the Mayflower Congregational Church, Lansing, Michigan.

Those desiring to contribute in memory of Ruth may choose to consider Mayflower Congregational Church, 2901 W. Mt Hope Ave., Lansing, MI 48911 or Careline Hospice, 103 S. Jackson St., Suite 200, Jackson, MI 49201

Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at: pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

 Denise ‘Denny’ Steele

Denise ‘Denny’ Rose Marie (Rife) Steele, age 84, of Vestaburg, MI, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, at Schnepp Senior Care Center in St. Louis after a long and courageous battle against breast cancer. Born at Highland Park General Hospital on August 10, 1938, to the late David Rife and Avadell Campbell Rife, she was the widow of Stanley ‘Jake’ Coridon Steele.

Denny is survived by four children: Jeff (Connie) Steele of Austin, TX, Cyndee (Mike) Weaver of Vestaburg, Cord (Paula) Steele of Austin, TX, and Rikki (Dave) Schuster of Outer Banks, NC; seven grandchildren: Noelle Couturier, Bruce (Kristina) Couturier, Jacob (Hayley) Weaver, Carrie (Brad) Frisbie, Katherine Schuster, Robbie and Jami Newton; brothers: George, Bud (Carol), and Mike Rife; 17 great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Denny is predeceased by her brothers, Skip Rife and Jack Rife.

Denny and Jake were high school sweethearts, graduating in 1956 from Fowlerville High School. They were married in 1957 and raised their four children in Fowlerville until moving to Vestaburg in 1980. Denny was an avid quilter, reader, and gardener. Denny’s favorite holiday was Christmas and she would spend months decorating every corner of her home for the season. Nothing made her happier than spending time with family and bragging about her grandchildren!

The family would like to thank special friends Lorna Rocker, Sue Brantley and all her OBX quilting ladies for the support and friendship to our mom during the last several years. Also, a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Schnepps.

A graveside service, honoring Denny’s memory, will be held at Richland Township Cemetery on a later date.
