Coilah Mae Hicks

Fowlerville, MI

    Her Legacy… Coilah Mae (Walworth) Hicks, 90, passed away on September 20, 2026. She was born on October 7, 1935, in Glenn, Michigan to Wayne and Martha (Loder) Walworth. Coilah married the love of her life, Glenn, on August 30, 1952, in Durand, Michigan and spent the next 60 years together. She will be remembered as person of faith who was a phenomenal baker and had a heart for helping others. Coilah was known to bake the best breads, cinnamon rolls, and pies around. She’d often make them on request and for a number of fund-raising events, like the Webberville Ox Roast and Fireman Field Days. She was a faithful member of the Fowlerville United Brethren Church where she was active in missions. Coilah also always seemed to be hard at work crocheting a hat, Afghan or scarf for one of her grandkids or a friend. Her bold and generous spirit will be missed.

    Her Family… Coilah will be missed by her children, Dean (Julie) Hicks, Glenda (Bob) Feig; siblings, John (Lois) Walworth, Elmer (Kim) Walworth, and Francis Figel; grandchildren, Shari, Angela, Jason, Scott, Catherine, Cara, William, Caleb, Hannah, and Abigail; great grandchildren, Tristan, Sydney, Hailey, Rebecca, Spencer, Addison, and Caroline; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Martha; sons, Wayne and David; great grandson, Collin; and ten siblings.

 Elwood Ott

    His Legacy… Elwood Ott, 93, a longtime Fowlerville resident, passed away September 19, 2026. He was born on January 16, 1933, in Clinton, Michigan to Frank Ott and Elise (Snyder) Ott. Elwood married the love of his life, Charlotte Denike, on April 17, 1954, spending 60 wonderful years with her before she passed. He will be remembered as a hard-working man whose life was dedicated to his family and his work as a truck driver. Elwood grew up on a farm in rural Lenawee County and milked cows as a kid as he developed a strong work ethic. He spent countless hours tinkering with anything that was broken to restore it to working order. This included his trucks, animal traps, mowers, and just about any mechanical thing that needed fixing. Elwood employed a determined mind and had a quiet demeanor, but could also be a jokester. Grandkids especially know that at any moment he might tease and even rile them up, always in fun. Once Elwood let someone in, he was a loyal friend for life.

    Elwood was part of the Ott Family Threshing Festival, held at the family farm on South Cemetery Road in Fowlerville for many years, that featured the use of steam engines in the threshing process. He continued taking his steam engines to the Mason show and drove one in the Fowlerville Christmas in the Ville Parade in recent years. He, his son Guy, his grandsons Justin and Guy II, and great grandson Jackson and the Don Van Sickle family just finished a two-and-a-half year project working on a Port Huron steam engine (shown above).

 Joan Vogt

Webberville Michigan

    Joan Vogt, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on September 15, 2026. She was born on Novemebr 17, 1945 to Carl and Doloris “Jean” Van Husen. Her family moved to Holt, Michigan where she graduated from Holt High School with the Class of 1963. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Linda.

    Joan met the love of her life, Levi Vogt, while they both worked at Lansing General Hospital, where Joan worked in the Personnel Department. They later married on September 7, 1968, and made their home in Webberville, where they raised their son, Jeff.

    Joan’s faith was very important to her. She was a devoted member of Williamston Memorial Lutheran Church, where she volunteered and was a member fo the Pioneer Women. She considered her church friends to be be her extended family and lived her faith through her kindness, service, and love for others.

    Joan dedicated many years to caring for children. She volunteered in the Webberville schools for many years and loved helping in the classrooms. She also operated a daycare in her home for many years, becoming a “bonus grandma” to many of the children she cared for.

    Joan was an active member of the Webberville Garden Club and generously volunteered with the Webberville FFA. She enjoyed helping during competitions and using her crafting talents to create items to sell at their silent auctions.

    Joan was an avid crafter who enjoyed crocheting, quilting, scapbooking, and creating special memories. She had a wonderful fift for turning ordinary moments into treasured keepsakes. She would often cut articles and photographs from the newspaper and use her creativity to create special memory books and laminate articles and pictures for the student she cared so deeply about. She also enjoyed camping and visiting with her friends and neighbors.

    Joan will be remembered for her strong faith, generous heart, creativity, and the many lives she touched. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, friend, and “bonus grandma” who gave so much of herself to others.

    Joan leaves behind her devoted husband, Levi; her son, Jeff;; her sister, Marcia; and the many family members, friends, church family, and children she loved as her own. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

    In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Joan’s membory to Williamston Memorial Lutheran Church, the Webberville Garden Club, or the Webberville FFA.

    The family will hold a graveside service on Saturday, October 10, at 2 p.m. at Alchin Farm Cemetery, 4585 Van Orden Road, Webberville. A Celebration of Life is being planned for Tuesday, November 17, at Williamston Memorial Lutheran Church, with visitation at 4 p.m., services at 5 p.m., and dinner at 5:45 p.m.

 Billie Joann Gerred

    Billie Joann Gerred of Fowlerville MI, was born on December 12, 1945. She passed away in her home at the age of 80 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

    Billie is survived by her daughter, Eve Van Patten and her son, Michael Gerred (Liz Murray), and family friend Matt Nagel. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Tyler Van Patten (Isabella Dixon), Maleena Van Patten, and Gerry Gerred.

    Billie was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years Dale Lynn Gerred, mother Evelyn G. Brand, sisters Nancy Joslin and Marry Olson, and brother Theodore Walker.

 Webberville FFA hosting Annual Chicken BBQ on Sunday,       Oct. 4th

    The Webberville FFA will host its annual Chicken BBQ on Sunday, Oct. 4, at the High School. The sale begins at noon and continues until all meals are sold.

    Dinners are $12 and include half a slow-roasted chicken, chips, applesauce, an oatmeal cream pie and a bottle of water.

 Livingston Audubon Natrualists to learn about owls at meeting on Oct. 8th

    Livingston Audubon Naturalists welcomes Laurel Zoet, Naturalist Educator, as she shares an inside look into the life of owls using pictures and videos. With their nocturnal habits and impeccable camouflage, it can be hard to spot members from this fascinating group of birds out in the wild. The program will be held on Oct. 8th, 6:45-8:30pm

    With over 200 species of owls in the world, this program will also look at which owl species live here in Michigan and what they’re doing this time of year.

 Nancy Linn Peters

    Nancy Linn Peters (formerly VanAmberg, née Jackson), 78, of Midland, Michigan, passed away on August 26, 2026, at the Toni and Trish House in Auburn, Michigan. She was born April 8, 1948, in Lansing to Alfred and Leola (Saunders) Jackson. Nancy grew up in Fowlerville, Michigan, and graduated from Fowlerville High School.

    In 1966 Nancy married her high school sweetheart, Gary VanAmberg. Settling in Manton, they shared 31 years until his passing in 1997. A devoted mother, Nancy prioritized attending her children’s school, band, and sporting events, creating cherished memories along the way. She gave her time to the Rollins Christian Fellowship youth group and later worked as a cook for Midland Public Schools for eight years. Nancy made friends easily and treasured family gatherings filled with laughter and togetherness. Her quiet warmth shone through her freshly baked cookies, thoughtful handwritten cards and letters, and time spent bowling and camping with her family.

    In 2013, she married Roy “Noah” Peters. Together they enjoyed the tranquility of country living, often watching the wildlife visit their property.

    Nancy’s legacy of love lives on through her children, Shawn (Brian) Smith of Midland Michigan, Brenda (John) VanSickle of Beverly Hills, Florida, and Michael (Lea Guirey) VanAmberg of Troy Michigan; her grandchildren, Lauren, Dietrich, Beck, Cole, and Quin; four great-grandchildren, Ada, Arn, Theresa, and Cecilia; her brothers, Randy (Cathy), Jeff (Marda), and Joel Jackson; and all of her nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and her first husband, Gary.

    An interment service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Toni and Trish House (toniandtrishhouse.org) to honor their compassionate care.

 George Thomas Kirkby

    George Thomas Kirkby, 81, of Fowlerville, Michigan, passed away on September 11, 2026.

    George was born June 2, 1945, in Lansing, Michigan, the son of Delphin and Susan Kirkby, and grew up in Lansing. He was a proud graduate of Michigan State University, where he earned his degree in Journalism, and he remained a Spartan through and through, rarely seen without a piece of MSU green and white in his wardrobe. He also proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

    On May 18, 1968, he married the love of his life, Sharron Coe, and the two shared 58 years of marriage together. In 1976, George and Sharron settled in Alanson, Michigan, where they made their home and raised their family for 43 years before moving to Fowlerville, Michigan, in 2024 to be closer to their daughter.

    George built his career with Pepsi, where he was known and loved as “Midnight” for the way he treated everyone he met on his route as a friend — stopping to load groceries, push a cart to someone’s car, or simply lend a hand, no matter how long his day had already been. That same generosity carried through his retirement, which he filled with volunteer work for the Alanson Hillside Beautification project, the Alanson Library, and the Alanson Fire Department, as well as photographing and writing about special occasions throughout his community. He was also a proud member of the Marine Corps League and took great joy each year in helping with Toys for Tots.

    An avid photographer, fisherman, and lover of the outdoors, George was happiest surrounded by his family. He spent countless hours reading and teaching his children and grandchildren to fish, skate on the lakes, cross-country ski, and snowshoe. His love of photography ran especially deep — he helped his daughter set up a darkroom in her high school and passed that same passion on to his son, Joel. He taught everything with patience and gave his time freely and often.

    George was a gentle soul who spent his life making the people around him smile. He was the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend anyone could ask for — always present, always up for a good conversation, and always ready to listen without judgment. Those who knew him simply called him “the nicest guy,” and no one who met him would have argued. He was, quite simply, one of a kind, and his family could not have asked for a better man to build their lives around.

    George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sharron (Coe) Kirkby; his daughter, Allison (Mike) Warren; his son, Joel (Lucy) Kirkby; his brother, David (Judy) Kirkby; his sister-in-law, Sherry Hurt (John); his grandchildren, Jamey Warren (Kelsee), Amanda Martin (Jesse), Bonnie Stice (Cole), and Arin Kirkby; his great-grandchildren, Chase, Ashlyn, Hayden, Miles, Sutton, and Lively; and many loving nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Delphin and Susan Kirkby; his brother, Ed Kirkby, and Ed’s wife, Barb; his sister, Sara; his daughter, Amanda; his granddaughter, Heather Stice; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

    George’s gathering of family and friends will be on Thursday. September 24th, 2026, from 12 PM to 3 PM at the American Legion Post 141 in Howell, Michigan. Funeral honors will begin at 12 PM. James L. Line

    James L. Line of Howell passed away peacefully at home, August 28, 2026, with his wife Eva, of 61 years, by his side.  He was born in Howell May 1, 1940, to Elgin and Audry Line.

    He is survived by his beloved wife Eva. His daughters, Kelley Line of Lansing, Deborah (Michael) VanSteenis of Pinckney and Ginger (Craig) Bunkoske of Howell. His two granddaughters, Madison and Olivia Bunkoske, whom affectionally called him “Grumpy”. He was preceded in death by his brother, Don Line.

    Jim was a hardworking lifelong dairy farmer in Howell. He was an avid hunter and in his younger years ran a trapline. If you could find him, it was in the woods with his coon dogs that he trained. He started hunting when he was eight years old and has since acquired a collection of trophies, tails and furs. He was the happiest at home working or hunting. He truly lived a simple life.

 Suzanne Ward

    Suzanne Ward, age 82, of Gaines, Michigan, went home to be with The Lord. She passed peacefully to New Life the evening of August 3, 2026, surrounded by her family.

    Sue was born in Detroit on June 14, 1944, the daughter and first child of Robert and Phyllis Jenkins. She was a well-behaved child with a big bright smile, a good mommy’s helper, and a “straight-A” student. She spent much of her childhood playing with her nearby cousins. Sue was a Girl Scout for many years. During her childhood and on, her favorite pastime was reading. During her teenage years the family moved to Orchard Lake, where she joined the West Bloomfield High Ski Team and graduated in 1962. As a waitress she saved enough money to buy her first car which was a shiny black 1960 Ford Convertible.

    She had three children, Pam, Paul and Scott, with her first husband, Steve Ziemba, and settled in Howell. She was a devoted mother, expressing the importance of education, eating healthy, and saving money.

    In the 1970s, Sue volunteered at newspaper and glass recycling centers in Howell. She was a hostess for Howell’s Welcome Wagon, visiting homes to greet newcomers to the area by handing out gift baskets. She was a waitress at Howell’s Big Boy restaurant and later at the Holiday Inn.

    After the earlier chapters in her life, in 1982 she fell in love with, found everlasting happiness and married Keith Ward of Howell on June 28, 1984, sharing the wonderful and final 42 years of her life by his side. The couple resided in Fowlerville for many years until moving to Gaines, Michigan more recently.

    In the early 1980s she volunteered at LACASA, helping with and reading stories to the children. She drove bus for Fowlerville Schools, worked at Alexander Hamilton Life Insurance of Farmington, then later as Deputy Treasurer for Handy Township of Fowlerville for several years. With her big beautiful smile, she welcomed voters into the township hall as she volunteered during many elections.

    She enjoyed folk music (especially John Denver), worked with Keith at gardening and canning, and especially loved for the two of them to head up to their beloved summer cottage on Hubbard Lake. She stressed the importance of family and absolutely adored her grandchildren, always greeting them with her loving smile, a big “Hello!” and yummy snacks. She and Keith would attend all grandchildren’s events, but where the real memories were made was taking the kids to Hubbard Lake where the stories and memories will forever be with them.

    Sue is the loving wife of her dedicated husband, Keith; the cherished mother of Pamela (Dennis) Guillen, Scott (Darci) Ziemba; grandmother of Jasmine (Corbett) Bennett, Jordan (Dakota) Aranda, Camille Guillen, Brendan Ziemba; great-grandmother of Malachi Bennett and step-great-grandmother of Sophia Aranda & Minoah Aranda; most loved sister of Robert Jenkins, Nancy (David) McKinney, Richard (Lisa) Jenkins, Carole (Dean) Nicolides, Catherine (Darrel) Shaft; and Aunt Sue to many nieces and nephews.

    Sue was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Phyllis, and her son U.S. Air Force 1st Lieutenant Paul Ziemba.

    Sue was a selfless, warm and welcoming woman. Even during her recent struggle with illness, she would deflect the topic of her current situation to inquire about the children, family and friends and their life’s happenings. She loved her church family in Cohoctah. She will be missed by her family and all who loved her, but Praise the Lord! She is now in her eternal home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

    A Celebration of Life service to be held in honor of Sue on October 3rd at 11:00 am at her church, Calvary Bible Church, 1389 Elm St., Cohoctah, MI, 48816.

    A luncheon to immediately follow at the fellowship hall at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 6686 Oak Grove Rd., Howell, MI 48855.

    Sue was an advocate for our nation’s veterans. In lieu of flowers, a contribution could be made in her memory to Disabled American Veterans, or Wounded Warriors Project.

 LACASA to host training on digital risks facing children on Sept. 30th

    Children and teens are navigating an increasingly complex digital world where social connection, entertainment and emerging technologies can also create opportunities for grooming, exploitation and exposure to harmful content. To help adults better understand these risks and how to respond, LACASA is partnering with Culture Reframed to host a day of training led by renowned national expert Dr. Mandy Sanchez.

    The Sept. 30th sessions will explore the impact of social media, gaming, pornography and artificial intelligence on youth, including how digital platforms can contribute to grooming, child sexual exploitation and trafficking. Participants will also learn about trauma-informed, evidence-based strategies to promote youth safety and resilience.

    “We know that technology is an increasingly important part of young people’s lives, and that means the adults around them need to understand both the opportunities and the risks that come with it,” said LACASA Director of Family Prevention and Education Holly Naylor. “We want parents, school personnel, and community members to understand the realities of today’s landscape as well as the role they play in keeping kids safe.”

    Dr. Sanchez, an expert on violence in a media-dominated society and its effects on children, will lead the training. Her presentation will address the potential harms of hypersexualized media and pornography while providing practical strategies for adults to better support children. Sanchez says the goal is not to scare parents, but to empower them to talk openly with the kids in their lives.

    "Parents and school personnel don't need to be digital experts; they need the knowledge, tools, and confidence to start these conversations now,” Sanchez said. “By replacing fear with honest research-based guidance, we can help young people think critically about what they encounter online and build healthier, safer relationships."

    Two sessions will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 30th to make the training accessible to different audiences:

Professional Development Training: 1 - 4 p.m.

    Designed for child advocacy professionals, mental health professionals, school personnel, multidisciplinary team partners, and others, this session will examine digital risks to children and provide strategies for assessment, prevention, intervention and collaboration. The training offers 2.5 MI-NASW and 2.5 MCBAP Continuing Education credits. Registration is $25.

Parent & Community Training: 7 - 8:30 p.m.

    This session will focus on helping parents, caregivers and community members understand the digital landscape children are navigating and identify practical ways to promote safety and resilience. This session is free and a pizza dinner will be served.

    “Parents and professionals don't need to be experts in every new platform or technology to help keep children safe,” Naylor said. “They do, however, need the information and tools to recognize potential risks and know how to respond.”

 Claude “Skip” Reed

    Claude "Skip" Reed, age 75, passed away peacefully on August 24, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on July 8, 1951 in Howell, Michigan, to Dorothy (Hicks) and Glendon Reed; the third of ten siblings. Skip moved to Muskegon, MI where he met his wife Cindy and spent the last 44 years together.

    Throughout his life, he was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent many years in the construction industry. He took great pride in his work and was known for his strong work ethic, determination, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Outside of work, he had a true passion for golf. He enjoyed time on the course, the friendships he made along the way, and the simple pleasure of being outdoors doing something he loved.

    He also proudly served his country as an Army veteran. His service was a reflection of his courage, dedication, and commitment to others. His favorite pastimes were cheering on the Michigan State Spartans and Detroit Lions, attending Muskegon's local festivals, helping friends and family with "do it yourself" projects, and traveling to Chicago to spend time with his daughter and family. However, his most cherished memories are those spent with his two beautiful grandsons; playing catch, basketball, board games, and trips to the zoo. He will always be remembered as the one where no outfit was ever complete without the perfect, color-coordinated hat.

    He leaves behind his loving family, including his wife, Cindy (Somerville) Reed; daughter, Amber McLaughlin; son-in-law, John McLaughlin; his cherished grandchildren, Reed and Spencer McLaughlin; and siblings, Gerald (Mary) Reed, Glen (Jane) Reed, Kenneth (Cindy) Reed, Steven Reed, James (Tammy) Reed, Janice (Michael) Lovejoy, Thomas Reed, James Kelly (Bo), and many extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

    He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers, Tim Reed and Fredrick Reed; and mother and father in-law, Lola and Virgil Somerville.

Skip will be remembered for the life he built, the people he touched, his love of golf, and being the best papa. He leaves behind cherished memories that will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

 Judith Ann Cox (Judy Cloud)

January 17, 1944 - August 27, 2026

    Judith Ann Cox, known to many as Judy Cloud, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2026, in Burley, Idaho, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Salem, Oregon, to Joseph Crane Cox and Helen Marie (King) Cox, both veterans who relocated to Fowlerville, Michigan from Detroit.

    Judy attended Fowlerville High School and graduated with the class of 1962. It was there that she met Richard (Dick) Lee Carson, the eldest son of Glenn and Marilyn (Smock) Carson. In an interesting twist of family history, Marilyn’s uncles, through the Sidell side of her family, had been instrumental in Joseph Cox’s move to Fowlerville.

    The eldest of nine children, Judy grew up alongside her sisters and brothers—Susie, Katharine, Joseph K., James, Thomas, John, Stephen, and William. Their family endured the tragic loss of their beloved mother, Helen Marie, in 1966, an event that profoundly affected Judy and her siblings.

    Judy and Dick embraced the communal lifestyle and spirit of the times, living the free-spirited hippie culture of their generation. Together they traveled throughout the country, living at various times in Michigan, California, Oregon, and Florida. Their journeys eventually took them along separate paths, but the years they shared remained an important chapter in Judy’s life.

    Judy continued her nomadic way of life for many years, following her curiosity and wherever life carried her. In her later years, she settled primarily in the Reno, Nevada, area.

    Judy was a talented seamstress and, above all, loved to play. She especially cherished time with her girls, always finding another adventure to share with them, whether it was a trip to the park, a visit to the library, live music or a local theater production. She nurtured in her daughters a lifelong appreciation for music, the arts and crafts, dancing, and beautiful clothes.

    She was a true free spirit with a deep love of nature. A member of the Sierra Club, she was an avid hiker and bird lover. She wrote poetry, almost always had a cat by her side, and was a devoted coffee drinker. She followed her own path through life with curiosity, creativity and an unmistakable sense of independence.

    Judy is survived by her two daughters, Christine Marie Carson (Kipp) Greengrass of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Catherine Sue Carson (Larry) Fitzpatrick, and her granddaughter, Nathalie Marie Fitzpatrick of Lansing, Michigan.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Helen Cox; her brother, Joseph K. Cox; and her first love, Richard (Dick) Carson.

    A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at a later time in the Lake Tahoe area, where her ashes will be released. It is a fitting final journey for a woman who spent her life seeking freedom, adventure and the beauty of the world around her.

    May she finally be free to wander wherever the wind carries her.

 Williamston Theatre kicks off Season 20 with The One Good Thing Or “Are Ya Patrick Swazye?”

    Williamston Theatre, located at 122 S. Putnam Street in downtown Williamston, will kick off Season 20 with the Michigan Premiere of The One Good Thing Or “Are Ya Patrick Swazye?” by Joe Bravaco. Performances begin Thursday, September 24 and run through Sunday, October 25. Tickets are now on sale.

    For brothers Jamie and Tommy, a morning conversation over eggs and tea takes an unexpected and mysterious turn: Jamie insists that the previous night’s storm has changed him in a way that’s hard to explain — and even harder to believe. As the two navigate this strange new reality, old tensions, unspoken truths, and long-buried memories rise to the surface. What follows is a touching, often humorous unraveling of memory, grief, and the complicated bonds we carry with those we love. As the line between reality and the supernatural begins to blur, questions emerge about what we carry, what we bury, and what, if anything, we’re brave enough to leave behind. (Note: This performance contains adult language.)

    The One Good Thing or “Are Ya Patrick Swayze?” runs for five weeks only. The first four performances are Preview performances - Thursday and Friday at 7:30PM, Saturday and Sunday at 2:00PM. The schedule for the remaining four weeks - Thursday at 2:00PM, Friday at 7:30PM, Saturday at 2:00PM and 7:30PM, Sunday at 2:00PM.  Webberville United Methodist Church serving chicken dinner on Sept. 19th

    Webberville United Methodist Church, located at 4215 E. Holt Rd. is serving a drive through chicken dinner on Saturday, Sept. 19th. The dinner includes two pieces oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chicken gravy, green beans, corn casserole, coleslaw, roll and cookies. All for $12. Dinner served 5 to 7 pm or until we run out.

    The Livingston Fine Art Association is presenting the ‘Colors of Life’ juried fine art show at the Historic Howell Opera House at 123 W. Grand River, Howell. This is a members-only display show, and the public is invited.
