Opening Day of the Williamston Farm & Artisan Market is finally here! Join us this Sunday, May 11th, Mother's Day! The Market has a new name, but still operates on Sundays from 10am to 2pm, and they're still in the large parking lot of McCormick Park, 123 High Street in Williamston, through Sunday, October 12th, rain or shine.

This Opening Day will be special, with Williamston Mayor Tammy Gilroy kicking off the 2025 season. There will be over 20 vendors selling plant starters (for tomatoes, herbs, peppers, eggplant, etc.), sprouts, perennial plants, baked goods (bagels, breads, rolls, baguettes, sugar cookies, etc.), limited produce, meat (lamb, rabbit, beef, pork, brats, bacon, etc.), eggs, cheese, kettle corn in a variety of flavors, breakfast burritos, sandwiches and salads, flour and baking mixes from Westwind Farm, canned goods including pickles, mushrooms, sauces, dog treats, hand-crafted jewelry, home goods, candles in all your favorite scents (or none!), items made from fabric, wood, wool, resin, plastic, personal care products, pottery, and so much more.

The Market's Opening Day theme is Mother's Day and in the children's craft booth, Seedlings and Sprouts, kids who stop by will make a "key to my heart" craft. Enjoy live mellow Market music all day, with Alan Hsiao Music. Alan is a trombonist, vocalist, songwriter and great talent on the keyboards, performing in the morning and early afternoon from 10am to 12:30pm, followed by DJ Clarinet entertaining all from 1pm to 2pm.

Vendors are invited to sign up for the whole season of 23 Sundays, or those Sundays that work in their schedule where there are still openings. Vendor information is at the Market website: Williamston Farm & Artisan Market-Vendor Info

At every Market, visitors show their support by bringing all their Michigan-returnable bottles and cans to the Can Van parked at the Market entrance. This popular fundraiser is a win-win: visitors leave the icky-sticky work to Market volunteers and every dime adds up to help defray Market costs thanks to their generosity.

If your business collects bottles and cans, consider donating them as well. Special collections can be made directly at business addresses during the week. Just call Jane Reagan (517-525-4177) to make arrangements for special pick-ups.

Interested in becoming a Sunday Market Supporter? For any individual, business or friend of the Market, a $100 contribution funds expenses unique to a Market day theme. Choose an available Sunday or based on that week's theme. For more information, contact Denise White, at Denise@SowingGrowth.org.

Next Sunday, May 18th, the Market theme is Community Services Day, with live mellow Market music provided in the morning by the Justin Fiske Band, playing covers of popular songs, and in the afternoon, enjoy guitarist and vocalist Emmitt Omar. In the kids' craft booth Seedlings and Sprouts, the craft of the day will be paper bag professions. In the Community service booth, also known as the Pollination Station, come visit representatives of the Capital Area District Library- Williamston Branch who will share information about their current and summer reading programs for visitors of all ages.

Webberville soldier returns home nearly 83 years after his death in World War II

By Steve Horton

A Webberville soldier has returned home nearly 83 years after his death at the start of World War II.

James W. Swartz, who grew up in the community, died on Sept. 23, 1942, at age 21 in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in the Phillipines.

For much of that time, his remains were classified as nonrecoverable. But thanks to the diligent efforts of the U.S. Army and DNA samples from his closest living descendant, Lori Byrnes, a great niece who lives in Fowlerville, he was identified and brought back to Michigan for burial.

Byrnes noted that four generations of James Swartz’s nieces and nephews were gathering this Saturday, May 3, 2025 to celebrate his life and finally bring him home. The funeral, with full military honors, was taking place at Summit Cemetery in Williamston. He was being buried next to his parents.

“We hope Jim will find peace and love in his final resting place,” Byrnes added.

Jim was born May 18, 1921, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents were Marie Scheltema (Swartz) Stingham and Charles Stringham. He had two sisters Elouise (Swartz) Meyer and Edna Stringham and one brother Chuck Stringham.

    Elouise was Lori’s grandmother.

Lori put together an obituary for the Army, using information from letters Jim had written his sister while in the service and other family artifacts as well as the oral history that had been handed down over the years.

“I didn’t have much to go on,” she added.

In the obituary, it was noted that Jim attended school in Webberville and graduated in the Class of 1939. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and his mother’s home cooking.

In August of 1939, Jim enlisted in the Air Corp Division of the Army, and attended training at Selfridge Field and at the Curtiss Wright Aromatic University in Chicago.

Jim served in the 17th Pursuit Squadron as a Staff Sergeant, at Nichols Field in the Philippines for two years. After Pearl Harbor was bombed, the U.S. entered World War II on December 8, 1941. The very next day the Japanese began devastating air raids in the Philippines which continued until April 1942, when the sick and starving US forces surrendered.

Jim was one of the 10,000 American prisoners that were forced on the 65-mile “Bataan Death March” into captivity. He died tragically at the age of 21 years, in the Cabanatuan POW Camp, Sept. 23, 1942, of malaria, dysentery and malnutrition.

After the war, U.S. forces attempted to recover remains of U.S. soldiers, but due to lack of physical evidence Jim’s remains was classified nonrecoverable. In 2017, Jim’s Gr. Niece, Lori Byrnes of Fowlerville, was asked to submit DNA samples. In 2019, as part of the Cabanatuan Project, the unknowns were exhumed and sent to the lab for analysis. Sgt James W. Swartz was ultimately identified in August 2024.

“The descendants of James W. Swartz are honored to memorialize a wonderful young man that meant so much to his family and friends, 83 years after his passing,” said Byrnes.

“My great grandma lived to be 97 years old and she never stopped missing her son,” Byrnes noted. “To think he had such a brutal ending haunted her. It changed our whole family and is so sad. Through reading the letters he wrote my grandmother I was able to glean a little bit about Jim. I wish I would have gotten to know him. It is a great thing the Army did to finally bring him home-it matters.“

Arrangements were entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

 Scott Gerald Motz

October 21st, 1966 - April 27th, 2025

Scott Gerard Motz suddenly passed away on April 27th at the age of 58. Scott was born on October 21, 1966, in St. Johns, MI, and was the son of Arthur and Rita (Sturm) Motz. Scott graduated from St. John’s High School and pursued an Associate Degree at Ferris State University.

Scott and his childhood friend started their own commercial construction business after college, building an empire of a company. He was a proud business owner and loved his work family.

Scott married the love of his life, Stacie, in 2004, where he took on the role of being another dad to Ashley. The three of them enjoyed their life in Ferndale, but Scott missed life on the farm. The three of them trekked to Fowlerville, where they were welcomed by an amazing community, many of whom are considered family. Soon came Maggie, and they enjoyed many family adventures, rustic camping trips, cooking competitions, and life on the farm. Being the loudest in the room, Scott was at every single dance recital, tennis match, FFA, and 4-H event. Scott was the best husband, girl dad, brother, uncle, and friend. Scott loved farming, his cattle, and enjoyed giving back to the community.

Scott is survived by his wife Stacie, beloved daughters Ashley and Magdalen, siblings Marilynn McDermott and William (Pat), and several beautiful nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Rita, and siblings Jerry, Rosemary, and Pamela Sheridan.

A visitation was being held at Herrmann Funeral Home in Fowlerville on Saturday, May 3rd, from 3pm - 7pm. A celebration of his life is being planned for this summer.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Motz Family Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made out to Fowlerville Community Schools. Memo: Motz Memorial
