 VINA Spring ‘Out of Quarantine’ Auction announces four trip packages

VINA has four different trips across the country to bid on in the Spring “Out of Quarantine” Virtual Silent Auction. The auction opens April 14, 2021 at 6 am and closes April 17, 2021 at 5 pm.

The first national auction item is a trip to sunny Arizona! Bidders have the chance to win a three-night stay at JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix, Arizona along with a certificate to Top golf and gift card to use at the resort on the many amenities.

Another auction item down south is a trip for two to San Antonio, Texas. This package includes a two-night stay at the Omni La Mansion del Rio hotel, a tour of historic San Antonio and dinner for two at Boudro’s Texas Bistro.

A third sunny and bright package is a stay at The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove in Miami. Two people can enjoy two nights in a deluxe room at the beautiful resort overlooking either Miami or the beach in addition to a $300 credit to Council Oak Steaks & Seafood located at the Hard Rock Casino.

The final national trip is only an eight-hour drive away to Nashville, Tennessee. This package includes two tickets to a show of your choice at The Grand Ole Opry, a post-show backstage tour, two-night hotel accommodations at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center and dinner for two at one of two restaurant choices: The Old Hickory Steakhouse at the Gaylord Opryland Resort or the Opry Backstage Grill at the Inn at Opryland.

There are many local trips, golf packages, Michigan getaways and staycation items up for auction for those not ready or able to travel to different states quite yet.

The auction is open to the public and bidders can register for free up until the auction closes.

All money raised during the Spring “Out of Quarantine” Virtual Silent Auction benefits VINA Community Dental Center and the many uninsured, low-income patients in need of dental care.

 Michigan Challenge Balloonfest coming to Howell with a ‘Twist’

The Howell Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce plans to move forward with a modified version of the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest on June 25, 26, and 27th .

The event will feature four flights throughout the weekend with launches taking place throughout the Howell Area and flying over downtown Howell. We are working to incorporate pop-up entertainment throughout our downtown during the weekend.

Although we will not be gathering at the event site as we have traditionally, we are adding an exciting new twist! The event will have increased coverage so that the greater community can share in the ballooning experience without being at the event in-person.

-The event will include radio and digital promotions

-Live video feeds and on-site pilot interviews

-Live video of balloon inflations, take-offs, and landings

-Live Sponsorship highlights for sponsors on-site or remoting-in

Twenty-four pilots will be competing in this year’s challenge. The main goal of the event this year is to attract people to the region to shop, dine and enjoy the sights of the balloons from a safe distance while avoiding large crowds and congregation.

Updates regarding the event with a complete list of downtown activities will be made available on the Michigan Challenge website as they are confirmed. We’re sincerely thankful for the support of our Balloonfest Committee, sponsors and community partners.

 Livingston Centre Historic Society planning Grandma’s Attic Sale

The Livingston Centre Historic Society continues to plan the annual Grandma's Attic Sale, scheduled for Thurs., Fri., and Sat., May 13 - 15, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. It will be held inside the Commercial Building near the front entrance of the Fowlerville Family Fairgrounds. Nearby parking is free. Vendors will also be on-site at times, offering such items as food and crafts.

Donations will be accepted Mon. - Wed., May 10 - 12. As you continue spring cleaning and pandemic organizing, please consider donating items no longer needed to this fundraising event for the benefit of the Historic Village, located there inside the Fairgrounds. Accepted items include smaller furniture (please, no sofas nor overstuffed chairs), clothing and jewelry, kitchen and household, toys, tools and hardware items, fabrics and crafts, books and dvd's (please no VHS tapes), smaller sporting goods, collectables and vintage items. The historic society appreciates your donations of good condition, usable items; please make sure all pieces and parts are included, and that everything works.

Unfortunately, in addition to the items noted above, the following items will NOT be accepted: TV cabinets/consoles and monitors, large exercise and sports equipment, computers and other electronics, handicap bathroom equipment, mattresses and large headboards.

Volunteers are still needed for set-up. Anyone interested in helping can call the above number.

Please remember that while this is an open-air building, in the interest of safety, special efforts will be made to practice best measures in avoiding coronavirus. Masks are required to ensure the safety of all, especially those working so hard to make this event successful.

 Barbara J. Keesler

On Tuesday, March 30, 2021, Barbara went to be with her Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Keesler and daughter Jennifer Keesler, in addition to her parents Mahlon and Alice (Kleckler) Pearce and sister Helen (Ivan) Taber.

Surviving relatives include:daughter Cindy (Fred) Denby and son Jim (Patti) Keesler. In addition, she had three grandchildren; Angela (Dan) Belanger, Brandon (Shelby) Denby and Mitchell (Kristi) Keesler. She also had seven great grandchildren. She loved being a grandmother and enjoyed many special events and memories with each of them.

Barbara was born on June 3, 1931 in Oak Grove, Michigan where she grew up as a child. Her parents were the owners of the local grocery store (Pearce’s Store), and she learned early on some of the tasks to help in the store such as inventory and cashing out customers. She met her husband, Charles “Chuck” Keesler, at an early age as he too lived in the Oak Grove community, near the family store.

She started her education in the Oak Grove county school and graduated from Howell High School. On July 1, 1950, she married Chuck Keesler, and they enjoyed over 65 years together prior to his death.

Early on Barbara utilized her secretarial skills with part-time jobs for Howell Schools and the Howell Elks Club. Then in 1969 she and Chuck purchased the local furniture store in Fowlerville which was renamed to Keesler Furniture. She worked at the family business for many years and enjoyed getting to know many community members after the family moved to the Fowlerville area.

Years later, Chuck decided to become a standardbred (harness) horse owner and eventually a trainer. After the death of their daughter Jennifer, Barbara also got involved in the standardbred horse business and became a successful trainer as well. Over the years they trained 25 standardbred horses which included some impressive record holders; with one being a world record holder. In addition, she served as the treasurer for the Fowlerville Harness Horsemen’s Association.

Barbara never missed an opportunity to celebrate holidays, birthdays and special times together with her family. Her other interests included working on dinners at the Fowlerville First United Methodist Church, spending time with friends, quilting, cooking and playing card games. She was strong, giving, modest and loved. Her red velvet cake was the best of the best.

Funeral arrangements for Barbara are through MacDonald’s Funeral Home in Howell. A “Celebration of Life” is scheduled for Monday, April 5, with visitation hours being 10:00am-2:00pm at the funeral home. A private family cemetery service will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be sent to the Fowlerville First United Methodist Church or the Genesis House in Fowlerville. The family would like to thank the community who has been so supportive during this time.

 Ralph Edward Snyder

Ralph Edward Snyder was born October 21, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan to Virgil and Lydia Edna Snyder. He was the third of six children and the first boy in the family. He is survived by his sister Hazel Richardson and companion Mary Snyder, nieces and nephews and long-time friends Rex Hall and Pat and Ron Drinkert and his Godchildren, David and Ronald Drinkert and Debra Robillard.

Ralph is the former owner of Ace Transformer Service Co. and former Vice-President of Transformer Service Co. of Detroit. He was brought up in the Lutheran faith and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Detroit as well as St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fowlerville. He was also a 42 year member of AA, a 65 year member of the I.B.E.W Local 17 as well as a long-time member of the Foresters.

He was loved by all who met him and will be missed by all for his smile and good nature. He was a hard worker his entire life which started out as a paper boy when age 8 and continued throughout his life until 1997, when he retired from his job and selling his company.

He was a friend to all the neighboring kids and they would wait for him to get home from work and greet him as if he was their father. He always had candy and a few encouraging words for them and more than once would give them money for pop or ice cream at the store or tomatoes from his garden. He was very generous to all and will be missed by all who knew him.

When ask what he wanted on his tombstone, he answered, just put “He was a hard worker.”

Visitation was held Tuesday, March 30, from 10:00 a.m. until the service time at 1:00 p.m. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Memorial contributions may be made to Livingston County EMS or Habitat for Humanity. His many AA friends may want to remember him by a donation to their local district or AA meeting.

 Webberville United Methodist Church holding drive-thru chicken dinner

The Webberville United Methodist Church, 4215 E. Holt Rd. is holding a drive-thru chicken dinner on Saturday, April 17, with 2 pieces oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chicken gravy, green beans, corn casserole, coleslaw, roll and cookies. All for $9. The dinner will be served 5 to 7 p.m. or until we run out.

 Fowlerville High School Alumni meetingbeing held at fairgrounds on June 12

The Fowlerville High School Alumni meeting is being held at the fairgrounds on Saturday, June 12, from 3-6 p.m.

“It’s ‘a go’,” said Judy Recker, the Alumni Association president. “We’ll be gathering in the area around the Finlan Gazebo in the front of the grounds. We are planning a low-key afternoon of visiting and renewing friendships. We also plan to recognize attendees from the honored classes.”

The event was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Alumni Association unlikely to be able to meet at the Fowlerville Junior High—its normal site—due to indoors public-health restrictions still in place. The gathering normally includes a banquet and program and is held the first Saturday after the high school graduation.

Realizing that a ‘normal’ Alumni Banquet & Meeting was not possible and not wishing to allow the event to be cancelled a second year-in-a-row, Recker said that she and the rest of the board started brainstorming via ZOOM and came up with this option.

“Cindy (Ruttman) Krebs has been contacting individuals from the honored classes, both last year and this year, in hopes of having them participate in a program that will recogize their milestone reunions,” said Recker. “We’ll also conduct our business meeting which is required under our bylaws.”

More information will be offered at a future date, but in the meantime plan on bringing your lawnchair to the Finlan Gazebo, along with any photos and memories that can be shared.
