Marvin A. Lon Smith
Marvin A. Lon Smith, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 9, 2022. He was born to Robert and Rose Smith on June 15, 1929 in Canton, Michigan. He met and married the love of his life, Mary Anne Bonnette, on September 2, 1951, six weeks after their first date. They were married for 64 years before she passed away in March 2016.
He served his Country with pride in the Army during the Korean War. He was a South Redford High School science teacher for 30 years. He loved spending time with his family, watching football, the kids sports games and feeding everyone to their heart’s content.
He was a teacher to everyone he met to the very end. His knowledge was never-ending and he was always reading to learn and gather knowledge. He always greeted everyone with a warm smile and boisterous hello.
Marvin was a devout Catholic who practiced his faith religiously. His country was his haven. It became the gathering place for everyone to meet. A place to laugh, play, celebrate and come together. Marvin and Mary Anne lived in their beautiful retirement home for 43 years.
Marvin and Mary Anne always welcomed anyone into their home, including any stray pet that crossed their paths. He enjoyed seeing and conversing with people.
Marvin is preceded in death by his wife, parents, siblings, all his aunts and uncles, his son-in-law Joseph DeSanto II, and his brother-in-law Richard (Lois) Bonnette.
He is survived by his brother-in-law Dennis (Lois) Bonnette and his nine children: Patricia (James) King, Laurie DeSanto, Stephanie Baker, Andrea (Ken) Roby, Scott (Linda) Smith, Jeffrey (Karen) Smith, Ali (Liz) Ifill, Dana (Gary) Smith, Kristen (Jose Ascencio) Smith. He had 19 grandchildren: Wendy, Adrienne, Jared, Joseph III, Michelangelo, Phillip, Amanda, Corey, Trevor, Savannah, Bryanna, Shannon, Johnny, Rebecca, Meghan, Brayden, Benjamin , Rosario and Manuel, as well as 8 great grandchildren, all of whom he loved tremendously. Marvin was also blessed with many nieces and nephews. Family was his life.
A memorial High Mass will be held on April 21, 2022 at 11:00 am at St Joseph Catholic Church in Howell, Michigan. Prior to the service, a gathering will be held at 10:00 am.
He will be laid to rest with his wife, Mary Anne, at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Howell, Mi. Afterwards, a Celebration of his Life will be held at his beautiful home that he loved so dearly. May he rest in peace.
