New program focuses on improved literacy for children

with book event

St. John’s Lutheran Church is launching a new mission with The R.E.A.D. Team, which stands for “Read Early And Daily.” Inspired by the "Talking is Teaching" program through Livingston Educational Services Agency (LESA), team members have been trained as Trusted Messengers and gained enthusiasm and understanding on the importance of children being strong readers by grade three.

“We see this opportunity to encourage reading and provide good books as our Christian mission to love our neighbors,” said Pastor Diane Greble. “It ties right in with our biblical mission, ‘Teach children in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not turn from it’ (Proverbs 22:6). Since we are people of the Book, we read. And in reality, people succeed and lead in life when they read well. We are looking forward to many opportunities to share with our neighbors.”

The R.E.A.D. Team is launching its first event on Saturday, October 3 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is geared toward young children, up to grade three. It will take place in the parking lot of St. John’s Lutheran Church, at the corner of Church Street and Maple Street, one block south of Grand River Avenue.

Face coverings and physical distancing will be required as children receive a copy of “Curious George Apple Harvest” and more. The story will also be shared in a storytime fashion and offer an opportunity for a short event to enjoy. Similar events are planned for November and December.

Materials are limited and available on a first-come, first served basis. As this program grows, more events and opportunities will be shared with the community. If you have questions, please call the church office at 517-223-9108.

 George Thomas Preisinger

George Thomas Preisinger, age 69, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2020, at his home in Rochester Hills, Michigan, after a courageous struggle with brain cancer.

George is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sarah, sisters Susan McMan (Dennis), Sally Friedlund, and Joyce Preisinger, brother Gary Preisinger (Theresa), aunt Alberta Holbrook, and numerous family members. He is preceded in death by his parents George and Elizabeth Preisinger, sister Joanne Prater (Lonnie), brother-in-law Robert Friedlund, and nephew Billy Sullivan.

George was born on August 18, 1951, in Howell, MI. He graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1969 and achieved bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Michigan University. He loved his family fiercely. He was kind, gentle, joyful, dependable, hardworking, and fun— everybody needs an Uncle George. He was the family photographer and go-to tech guy. When George visited family or friends, he always brought his toolbox because his fix-it skills were legendary.

George golfed every chance he got, and his favorite courses were Oakland University’s Sharf and Katke-Cousins where he scored four holes-in-one. His final hole-in-one came during his radiation treatments. When he wasn’t on the links, he was dedicated to friends old and new. He helped people with golf tips, home repairs, and is well-known for his many hijinks.

For 39 years, George was a lead problem solver at Oakland University where he was the Assistant VP of Instructional Technology Services. Faculty and staff could always depend on George to think outside the box and come up with a creative solution for any need. Most exceptionally, his positivity was infectious and made everyone in the workplace want to do and be better.

“He played a crucial role in bringing OU to its current level of success,” said OU President Dr. Pescovitz. “His work will always be remembered.”

Visitation is being held Sunday, September 13, from 3:00-8:00 P.M. at Potere-Modetz Funeral Home in Rochester, MI. A funeral Mass will be prayed on Monday, September 14, at noon at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Rochester. All are welcome to attend and celebrate George's life. He will be interred at a later date at Plainfield Village Cemetery in Gregory, MI.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the George Preisinger Scholarship Fund at Oakland University. To donate, go to Oakland.edu/giving, click on Give Now, and search for George Preisinger Scholarship Fund under Your Gift Your Choice.

They immediately began building their family and future together. Over the course of 7 years, Jerry and Patricia were blessed with five sons.

He was blessed with fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren who will forever remember their Grandpa as a lighthearted, joking man, who had a song for everything.

Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather to his large family in which his world revolved around. He saw the importance of unity in family and instilled that in his offspring who are extremely close and active in each other’s lives today. His memory will live on through these generations as they continue to kindle the tight-knit relationships he helped form between everyone.

With strict safety regulations in place due to the pandemic, the family has decided to postpone a public memorial service in Jerry's honor until further notice.  St. John's Lutheran Church to host special gatherings for community

While the Church in every place has had to persevere, re-think, create and, most of all, have faith since March 17, 2020, God has been gracious and continued to provide what has been needed.

St. John's Lutheran Church in Fowlerville continues to live life together: online, in small gatherings, in prayer and praise. Ministry to neighbors and friends continues as well with our Personal Needs Pantry and LETS Bus Token transportation ministry. As a partner church with Love INC of Greater Livingston, we continue to serve neighbors and in order to keep stocked with the resources needed, we invite the community to join us for a special gathering.

"Mr. B," Doug Burnie, will share corn dogs and ice cream on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church parking lot. You'll find us on the corner of Church and Maple Streets, one block south of Grand River Avenue. Our address is 132 South Benjamin Street. Free-will donations will be accepted and all proceeds will go toward this important ministry. Carry out and limited seating is available.

The congregation has been blessed to spend a few Sunday mornings worshiping at the Fowlerville Community Park as well. This will take place on two more occasions: Sept. 20 and Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m. at the large pavilion. Bring a lawn chair and dress according to the weather. Face masks are required, and the event is limited to 100 people.

St. John's is also hosting a new, All-Church Sunday School. While a smaller group will gather in person, families and individuals can also join us through ZOOM to experience this study on The Beatitudes as found in the gospel of Matthew. All ages---kids through adults---will come together with small group discussion, some hands-on activity and faith building. Registration is needed so we can supply all participants with study packets. Please contact us at 517-223-9108 to register.

We ask you to pray with us for God to bring the COVID-19 crisis to a conclusion and to sustain unity and peace in our community, nation and world. You can find us at St. John's Lutheran Fowlerville on YouTube, on Facebook and at www.stjohnsfowlerville.org.

 Ronald Edward Thomas

Ronald Edward Thomas “Ronnie” was born November 13, 1933 in Belleville, Michigan. He passed away peacefully at his family farm in Gregory, where he had lived since 1944, on August 30, 2020. He loved his family, his “extra” kids, watching/yelling at sports, his cows, playing golf and his John Deere 4020.

Ronnie was a profound pundit of the English language, and he never missed an opportunity during a game or gathering to effortlessly articulate an awe-inspiring collection of expletives. He mentored several youth in the ways of farming, sports, fun, and swearing.

He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Tillie June; his parents, George and Alma; and his five siblings. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan; children: Eldiva (Mark) Lathrop of Holt, George (Amy) of Gregory, Daisie (Wes) Scharmen of Saline, and Douglas of Gregory; nine grandchildren: Ross, Georgi, Lyndsie, Wyatt, Lillian, Lucille, Lyla, Gabe, and Dylen. His passing leaves a hole in our lives. He will be missed by all.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 from  3-8 p.m.  at the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stockbridge.

 Edward ‘Ed’ Joseph Kubiak

“And on the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, “I need a caretaker.” So, God made a farmer.

Edward (Ed) Joseph Kubiak of Webberville peacefully left his fields on earth to tend to the fields in heaven on Friday, August 28, 2020 at 82 years old while surrounded by his family. Ed was born on October 7, 1937 in Wayne, MI to Joseph and Hattie Kubiak. He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, and their spouses, Penny Zvanciuk and daughter Joanne Pidd whom was the light of his life.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Joan, along with their children: Edward Kubiak, Joy (Todd) Hull, Janet (Mike) Wilson, Joe (Brandy) Kubiak, Mike (Tina) Kubiak, John Pidd, Elizabeth (Dan) Stiffler, as well as his many grandkids; Ashlei (Ryan) VanSickler, Travis Kubiak, Kelsei (Lyle) Young, Paige Wilson, Michael Wilson, Caleb Kubiak, Maci Kubiak, Austin Stiffler, Gavin Kubiak, Abby Stiffler, Ally Stiffler, Jesse Pidd, and great-grandkids Hunter and Haiden VanSickler, and Adlee and Gradee Young.

Ed lived his life serving people. He started farming at a young age in Wayne and moved to Webberville in 1963 where he continued to grow his empire. Whether he was tending to the cows or working in the fields, he always made time to cruise around in his white pickup truck to check on his people. You could often catch him driving to their doorstep and honking the horn until someone appeared. If you were brave enough to get in the truck, you knew you may not return home until dark; but you would return with a full belly and a smile. Ed enjoyed visits from his kids, grandkids, and friends. Anyone that walked in his door was welcome to a seat at his table, and when you left he ended the visit with a “drive safe, watch for deer.” He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Services were held at the home farm located at 4965 E Sherwood Rd, Webberville. Visitation was on Monday, August 31 from 2-4 PM, 6-8 PM and Tuesday, September 1 from 10-11 AM. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 1 at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Webberville FFA or Residential Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Fowlerville 4th of July Fireworks Show cancelled for 2020 due to restrictions

The Fowlervillel 4th of July Fireworks has been cancelled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 restrictions still in place for outdoor activities.

“After numerous ongoing discussions with the Village of Fowlerville attorney, it is with great disappointment that we announce that we must cancel our  fireworks show this year,” said Brandon Denby, the committee chair.

“Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we were forced to postpone our annual fireworks that has been held for over 40 years in the Village on July 4,” he said. “Our committee has repeatedly attempted to move our show to a different date since them,  but efforts have come to no avail.”

The committee is still planning at this time to host its 2nd Annual ‘Wreaths Across America’ on Dec. 19 at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville. This event honors our fallen heroes in a beautiful and moving tribute to all of our veterans who have passed before us. Details on this event will be coming at a later time.

Preparations have also begun for the Sunday, July 4  2021 Fireworks, Parade and other activities. Details concerning this event will be released at a later date.

“I would like to thank my fellow committee members, everyone at the Fowlerville Village office as well as the many volunteers for all their hard work,” said Denby. “This has been a tough year, and tough decisions have been made. Thank you to our community for your support this year as always.

For further information please feel free to contact Committee Chairperson, Brandon Denby by email at bdenby@livgov.com or by phone @ (517) 546-0270.
