Louie F. Schneider, Jr.
Louie F. Schneider, Jr. of Fowlerville, Michigan, signed off for duty a final time on May 20, 2019.  He was 89 years old.
He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on February 24th, 1930 to Louis and Irma (Keller) Schneider.  He is survived by his brother Nuel (Ardis) Schneider and sister, Mary Engel.  Louie attended University High School and excelled at athletics.  A true patriot, he joined the Merchant Marines at age 15 and at 16 served in both the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Guard.  On his 18th birthday in 1948, he joined his first love, the United States Marine Corps.  Louie served his country faithfully for 21 years, including two tours in the Vietnam War, before retiring as a First Lieutenant in 1968.
On September 6th, 1950, he married Janie Margaret Whitworth.  They were blessed with two children, Dean (Sherry) Schneider and Glenda Schneider Vaughn who survive him.  They enjoyed a wonderful 33 years together before Janie’s passing.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Louie served as a police officer in Chelsea, Michigan from 1968 to 1971, and as the Chief of Police for the cities of Villa Rica, Dallas, and Lawrenceville, Georgia from 1973 to 1981.
In 1983, Louie married Mary Maloney.  They shared 36 years of marriage before Mary’s passing early in 2019.  He is survived by his stepchildren, Kathleen (Tom) Kane, Susan Brennan, Michael (Tracy) Maloney, Maureen Maloney, Bridget Moore, Patty (Kevin) Opuda, Sharon Robertson and Brian Maloney. He was preceded in death by Danny Maloney and Peggy Maloney.
There is no man that embodied duty and honor like Louie.  He lived his life in total dedication to his family, God and country.  His charm and grace could only be eclipsed by his ability to break into song or make you laugh.  Our lives are forever changed by the man, the myth, the legend.
There is no doubt that you, reader, may have fallen under Louie’s spell.  He was the beloved patriarch and fearless leader of his two children, ten step-children, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  His booming voice could be heard cheering on every sideline, telling stories at every meal, and still, in these quiet moments, singing “The Halls of Montezuma” in our hearts.  He was a living hero, our own tall tale, and the one we will never forget.
Semper Fi, Sir, and farewell.  We know that you have taken your place in Heaven, where the streets are guarded by our favorite Marine.
Visitation was held on Thursday, May 23, 2019, 2:00-4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00pm at Herrmann Funeral Home in Fowlerville.  Funeral Mass took place on Friday, May 24, 2019, 10:30am at St. Agnes Catholic Church.  Arrangements by Herrmann Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Gas engines, many of them dating to the early 20th Century, will be on display. There will be working demonstrations showing how this early farm equipment was used, including how an engine, using a belt, sawed wood. There’ll also be antique machines powering corn and feed grinders.
In addition, the event features a Flea Market, a Craft Barn (Saturday only), a Bake Sale,  a 50-50 Drawing, and an Oil Raffle. Other highlights include a Kids Barrel Train that will provide ‘free’ rides to the younger attendees.
The Livingston Centre Historical Village will be open Saturday and, along with being able to tour the buildings,  there’ll be demonstrations at the Blacksmith Shop.

Walter Bradley House
(9/11/1924-5/14/2019)
Walter Bradley House was born on the family farm, 459 Kane Rd, Webberville, MI to Rex & Florence (McIntyre) House, where he continued to reside for most of his adult life.  He attended the Havens one-room school at the corner of Kane and Columbia Roads with his 5 sisters, Marianna, Elda, Marge, Carol & Joan until 8th grade.  At Fowlerville High School, Walter served as senior class vice president, was a member of the Future Farmers of America, and after a full recovery from rheumatic fever was able to play on the varsity baseball team his senior year.
In June of 1943, Walter enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, 90th Bomb Group, 321st Bomb Squadron, serving as a radioman on 44 missions over New Guinea and Mindoro Island in the Philippines.  Upon coming home after the war, he met his wife of 67 years at a Lake Lansing dance and on August 21, 1948, he married Meredith June McComb at her family home in Webberville MI.  Together they raised 4 daughters on the family farm, centennialized in 2000.  Soon thereafter, they sold the homestead portion of the farm and built Meredith’s dream home on the remaining half, where they resided until her death in 2015.
During the early years, Walter briefly drove a milk truck, trapped muskrats and sold their furs, while running a 30-cow dairy operation in order to achieve ownership of the family farm.  He also purchased adjacent acreage during this time from his elderly German farm neighbor, allowing Vern Wilhelm lifetime habitation rights to the home.
A serious bout of pleurisy in the mid-60’s then made it inadvisable for Walter to continue the dairy business; the cows and most of the farm machinery were sold at auction and in 1965, Walter began his new career as a foreman for the Livingston County Road Commission, from which he retired in 1985.  In addition, Walter earned his real estate license and sold parcels of land to help finance college educations and weddings for his 4 daughters.
In the early years, Walter and Meredith were active members of the Livingston County Farm Bureau, enjoyed dining out on Friday nights with friends and dancing with their Colonial Square Dance Club.  As children began to “fly the coop”, they started traveling, their journeys taking them throughout the continental US, Hawaii, Spain, Morocco, and Canada.  Playing euchre with their empty-nester friends was also a favorite pastime.  Walter also enjoyed bowling and morning coffee-klatches with his country comrades.  Throughout his life he was a fisherman and an avid hunter of rabbits, pheasants, grouse, and especially deer and spent many happy times at the ramshackle family deer camp in Seney MI.
While he claimed no official membership in Trinity Methodist Church, he was a life-long supporter, periodically
lending his grounds-keeping and carpentry skills.  In his retirement years, he developed a love of woodworking; his church, Meredith, children, grandchildren as well as many friends and other relatives have all been the lucky recipients of his beautifully crafted handiwork.
Walter was the last surviving member of his biological generation.  Surviving to cherish his memory are 4 daughters:  Pamela A. (Lucius) Greve of Bay City MI; Mona J. (Thomas) Jacobs of Alto MI; Donna K. House of Needles CA; & Sandra L. House of East Lansing MI.  Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Ashley (Greve) & Bill Zielinski (GGChild: Joslyn); Hilary (Greve) & John Busch (GGChildren: Drue, Stella; John); Amanda (Jacobs) Prats-Reyes; Benjamin and Stefanie Boros (GGChildren: Dexter, Clark); Kylee (House) and Franjo Kneefel (GGChildren: Bradley, Wesley); Thane House and Sayaka Saito (GGChildren: Anaya, Amelia).  Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at Brookdale Assisted Living of Hartland for their 4 years of kind and dedicated care of Walter.  Special thanks also to Medilodge of Okemos and Covenant Greater Lansing Hospice.
An 11am funeral service was held this past Saturday, May 18, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 8201 Iosco Rd, Fowlerville MI, with visitation at the church one hour preceding.  Internment to Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville followed the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church of Fowlerville. Arrangements by Herrmann Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Antrim Baptist congregation to honor Civil War veteran at May 26 celebration
Antrim Baptist Church is hosting a memorial celebration at Fuller (Conway) Cemetery on Lovejoy Rd across from the church Sunday May 26, at 12:15 PM. Each year the congregation honors one of the veterans that is buried there.
This year they will be honoring George Harris who was a drummer for General Grant in the Civil War. The drummer was always in the front line of the battle, bravely and skillfully using their drum to transfer directions to the infantry. Different beats would give commands to move right, left, forward, about face, etc. George Harris was in the front line of the 26th Michigan Infantry as he watched General Lee and General Grant enter the Wilmer McLean house in Appomattox to sign the terms of surrender.
The church organizers need your help to connect with any of his descendants that you might know. Some of you may remember George Harris’ grandson Ike Harris. He was a long-time resident of Fowlerville who at one time managed the Orr Theater in Fowlerville. If you are a descendent or have knowledge of any of them, please pass on this information and/or contact Doug Helzerman (517 375 4869), Dave Roddy (517 749 3410) or the church (517 223 3126) so they can reach out directly to them.

Joseph Benjamin Smith
(November 19, 1933 – April 29, 2019)
Joseph Smith reunited with his wife of 62 years, Shirley, on April 29th. Joe was a man of honor and principle, but still tried to be tolerant to differences. He valued honesty, but tried to have patience with those who were not. He believed in service to God and to his Country, but could love someone even when their beliefs did not align. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who taught his family how to love and respect others.
Perhaps Joe’s greatest legacy is the lifetime of memories, love, and values that he has left with his family—daughters: Carolyn Woods (Ken), Barbara Rocco (Gregg), and Tracey Smith, his 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Smith; son, Joseph Smith; and great-grandson, Brody Rocco.
He was born in Tennessee and moved to Detroit, Michigan when he was 17; later enlisting in the Army, and stationed in Germany. Once home and retired from the Army, he and Shirley married in 1956 and he took a job as a Rigger, moving large structures and buildings throughout the city of Detroit.
Shirley and Joe raised their children in Detroit; however, his love for wide open spaces never waned, and he and Shirley retired to Byron, MI in the early 1990’s. In addition to farming his land, he enjoyed Bible study, hosting family parties, fishing, westerns, and Detroit sports. Joe will be deeply missed by his friends and family.
Visitation was held Friday, May 3, from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Herrmann Funeral Home.  A private family graveside was taking place on Saturday, May 4,  at 1:00 p.m. at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit.  Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com
