Livingston County High School Seniors who expect to attend the University of Michigan in the fall of 2019 may apply for a $1000.00 scholarship being offered by Brighton Attorney, Neal D. Nielsen, a Regent Emeritus of the University of Michigan.
The deadline for entries is May 1, 2019 and the applications are available in Nielsen’s office located at 2000 Grand River Annex, Suite 200, Brighton, Michigan 48114.
The scholarship is “not intended to go to the smartest person or the person who is poor,” Nielsen said. “It is intended to go to the people in the community that show concern, leadership and academic ability.”
The application includes questions on employment, experience, intended major, as well as awards and accomplishments. It must be verified by a principal or counselor. Applicants will also be asked to write an essay describing their value systems.
The scholarship is being offered to any eligible student in Livingston County. This will be the 33rd year it will be offered.
Nielsen said he started the scholarship because he is concerned about the Livingston County community stating “I think those of us who work here should reinvest ourselves to give back to the community.”
“Our future is in our youth,” he said, and the scholarship encourages those who are actively pursuing higher goals to bring their advanced education back to benefit the community.
