Darrell R. Brown
Darrell Brown was born in Lansing, Michigan on July 26th, 1926 and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on July 19th, a few days shy of his 90th birthday. Darrell was a lifelong resident of Haslett and dearly loved the community. He believed in hard work and making things happen, in the importance of honesty and standing by his word. He had a passion for life that was present in all his endeavors, had a great smile, laugh, and sense of humor and was always fun to be around, but was calm and thoughtful when life’s challenges needed to be discussed.
Darrell was the youngest of five children born to Ottie and Elvin Brown and was a 1944 graduate of Haslett High School, where he was awarded “Best All-Around Athlete,” an honor he treasured. After high school he served in the army during World War II with the 11th Airborne Division, and was later part of the Japan Occupational Force.
Civilian life brought him to work on the family farm. Through his enjoyment of dancing and big band music he met a dance partner named Lois Musolf, his wife of 63 years. Together they raised four children, built the home they lived in for 50 years--the site of countless celebrations, card games and in the later years hayrides and bonfires for grandchildren and great grandchildren. Darrell was a farmer, delivered the U.S. mail, and drove a Haslett school bus.
He went into insurance and formed the Darrell Brown Agency, starting out in the basement and eventually building an office on Haslett Road. He was proud to be an agent representing Auto-Owners for many years. He and Lois toured worldwide through his relationship with the company. He also began Darrell Brown Realty and continued as a broker after selling the insurance business and remained an active member of the Greater Lansing Association of Realtors till his last day.
Darrell was a member of the Haslett Community Church, the Haslett Business Association, a member and past Worshipful Master of the Williamston Masonic Lodge, and a member and past president of The Haslett /Okemos Rotary Club. He served on the Haslett School Board for eight years, helping procure the land and then laying out of the present high school. Throughout the years mail that the post office received addressed to the “mayor” got dropped off at his office and he became the unofficial “Mayor of Haslett” and loved it. Darrell was a Huge Spartan Fan and held football tickets for decades. He loved golfing with his buddies and playing cards with Lois and their friends, and always treasured time spent with family.
Darrell is preceded in death by his wife Lois, his parents and his brothers Robert, Daniel, Frank and his sister Jeanette Stearns. He is survived by his four children: Jack (Marilyn) Brown, Colleen Brown Williams, Mike (Louise) Brown, Nancy (Tom) Herlocker and grandchildren: Jeremy (Shannon) Brown, Scott Brown, Beckie (Brian) Conlen,
Steve (Katie) Brown, Bill (Andrea) Edwards, Maureen Edwards, Trevor Williams, Cara Williams, Leah Herlocker, Bryant Herlocker and six great-grandchildren.
His absence will be felt beyond measure. Darrell’s memory will live on through family and friends and our lives are forever enriched by his love.
Visitation will be September 9, 2016 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Gorsline-Runciman East Lansing at 1730 East Grand River Ave, East Lansing, MI 48823.

Jane (King) Billinger
Jane (King) Bollinger passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Jane was born in 1924 in rural Livingston County, Michigan, to Hazel (Nicholas) and Ira N. King. She graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1941. Jane and Alger Bollinger were married at the Plainfield United Methodist Church in December 1942. They were married for over 65 years, until Alger passed away in early 2008.
Jane and Alger raised their three children on the small Bollinger family dairy farm near Plainfield. As parents, they each worked double shifts to supplement the precarious farming income. Al worked days on the farm and nights as a skilled die-maker in Howell. Jane worked at home, caring over the years for twenty-three beloved foster children. Jane was a born musician; many neighbors and friends have appreciated her expressive soprano solos sung at weddings, funerals, and other occasions.
After their children left home, Jane and Alger sold the farm and moved to the Bollinger homestead at 405 Main Street in Gregory. Jane shared with Alger the love of music, gardening, and Siamese cats. They enjoyed playing duets, Jane on the piano and Al on the saxophone. They worked on projects to benefit the Plainfield Church. Jane also worked for ten years at Book Crafters Publishing in Chelsea. Jane and Alger traveled in the U.S. and toured Europe and Mexico. As a widow, and while she was able, Jane lived in the little saltbox house she and Alger had built to downsize in 1984. Jane then went to live with a daughter and son-in-law in Wisconsin.
Jane was a natural writer, who chronicled local life, both past and present, including genealogies of the King and Bollinger families. Her popular newspaper column, “The View From My Window,” evoked the rhythms of nature, farm, and village.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings: Trula Jackson, Emmett King, Donna Nichoson, and Phyllis Osborne; her husband: Alger Bollinger; and her son, Carl Frederic ‘Ric’ Bollinger.
She is survived by two daughters: Patricia Gayle (Raymond) Cole of Fowlerville, Michigan, and Joel Ruth (Randall) Pouwels of Green Bay, Wisconsin; sister-in-law: Patricia Fitzgerald of Ann Arbor; grandsons: Michael (Jill) Cole of Cedar Springs, Michigan, and Craig (Jennifer) Cole of Akron, Ohio; granddaughter: Elanor ‘Ellie’ Phillips of Bentonville, Arkansas; great-granddaughters: Caitlin Cole and Chelsea (Cody) McKay, all of Muskegon; numerous nieces and nephews; and Skeeter, her last Siamese cat.

She was born on July 6, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to George Leo and Gertrude Dieter Walton. Mary grew up in Detroit where she graduated from Immaculata High School in 1948. After high school she attended Marygrove College in Detroit where she earned her B.A. in Mathematics Education in 1952 and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her M.A. in Education from the University of Detroit in 1956, and pursued graduate studies at Eastern Michigan University in the early 1980s.

She devoted much of her life in service to others, raising two boys as a single mother, caring for her parents in their old age, and teaching English as a secondary language as a retiree. Her interests and circumstances led her to reside during retirement in Novi, Michigan, Englewood Florida, San Antonio, Texas, and Venice, Florida. After a bad fall precluded her living independently, she joined her son Michael and his family in Fowlerville. Declining health in the past year required her move to Margaret’s Meadows in Remus, and finally to The Laurels, in Mt. Pleasant.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 855 East Grand River Ave., Fowlerville, at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 25, 2016, preceded by a viewing at the church beginning at 9 a.m. A visitation will be held at Herrmann Funeral Home, 1005 East Grand River Ave., Fowlerville, from 4 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 24. A private burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetary in Southfield will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Margaret’s Meadows, 5257 South Coldwater Rd, Remus, MI 49340 or the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be left on the Mary Gertrude Walton Steinhelper’s online guest book at  pjherrmannfuneralhome.com.

This summer, we will take your kids on an adventure like no other, deep within the mysterious sea. As kids submerge themselves in God’s Word, they will discover that Jesus didn’t just see what’s on the outside of people. He looked deep down on the inside. So grab your goggles, step into your flippers, and dive in to find truth below the surface! "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way." Psalm 139:23-24 Motto: Jesus sees. Jesus knows. Jesus saves
The fun starts Sunday August 21 through Thursday August 25th! Dinner will be served at 5:30pm and VBS will begin at 6pm at the Dansville Free Methodist Church, 1340 Mason Street.

Their tasks have included interviewing and hiring two new assistant principals, a new transportation director, a new high school counselor and eight teachers as well as other staff, finalizing agreements with the employee bargaining units, passing a new budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year, and completing the annual audit.
