Field Days & Ox Roast coming this weekend to Webberville area
This weekend will mark the 70th year that the Leroy Township Fire Association will put on its Field Days and Ox Roast in Webberville. The Association is comprised of the current firefighters on the Leroy Fire & Rescue Department as well as supporters.
The fire department chief is Mark House, while the association president is Ron Cole.
The three days of activities— Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Sept. 23-25)— include a Saturday parade at 2 p.m. through the downtown (with Colleen Scott Kizer, a Webberville High school teacher and FFA advisor, serving as this year’s grand marshal), a Kids Parade earlier in the day at 9 a.m., the Arts & Crafts at the Community Barn, live music on Friday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. with ‘Hollywood Vinyl’ and on Saturday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. with ‘Handsome Pete’, a Farm Tractor Pull on Saturday, and a Garden Tractor Pull on Sunday. Most of these events will take place at the Fire Hall grounds, although the two tractor pulls are held on Main Street in Downtown Webberville.
The carnival rides and games of chance will again be provided by Family Fun Time on Friday and Saturday.
The ox burgers and ox soup will be served at the Fire Hall on Friday and Saturday, starting at noon. Over 2,000 pounds of meat are cooked during the two days with over 6,000 burgers expected to be served. The cost of the ox burgers will remain at $4, while the price of the ox soup has been raised to $2 and the chips and drink will be $1.50.
New this year will be a Pulled Pork Sandwich offered on Saturday by Crazy Larry’s Catering in addition to the ox burgers.
Help is needed to serve the ox burgers; call Larry Bloom at 517-899-5003 to volunteer.
Several other activities, put on by other community groups, also are taking place during the Field Days celebration. The Webberville Lions Club will host a Social Barn next to the Fire Hall grounds on both days. The burgers are also available there. The Webberville United Methodist Women and the Webberville Garden Club will host their annual Bazaar, Bake Sale, and Flea Market at the Community Barn.
The Webberville Garden Club is also sponsoring a Pumpkin Decorating Contest for area boys and girls sixth grade and under. Entries will be accepted from 3 pm. Friday until 3 p.m. Saturday at the Barn. The Webberville Friends of the Library, meanwhile, is hosting a Pluck-A-Duck game booth on both days with prizes guaranteed for young participants.
The Association will also offer Touch-A-Fire Truck. This activity allows people to tour the inside of a fire truck and also examine the firefighting equipment. Also planned is an Ox Burger Eating Contest that takes place on Saturday at 6 p.m.
On Sunday, starting at noon, the Webberville FFA and FFA Alumni will put on their Chicken BBQ Dinner at the Fire Hall.
