Cassie Canedo seeks 50th Michigan House Seat

A Fowlerville area nurse practitioner is seeking the 50th House seat, saying she wants to focus on building a better future for children.

Cassie Canedo, 39, says she will focus on education and health care in the Michigan House.

“I was compelled to run to represent my community as I am tired of the hateful rhetoric that is coming from our current representation. We need young candidates running who can help shape our future for our young children,” she said.

A big part of that future, she said, is schools with teachers who will teach our children to be smart and kind adults.

“I believe in healthcare for all, no one should have to go bankrupt or crowdfund to pay bills for an illness they did not ask for,” Canedo said.

“I have watched time and time again patients who fight so hard for their health and their families have to struggle to pay bills and keep a roof over their head.’

Canedo is an oncology nurse practitioner currently working for a startup company. She previously worked at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s bone marrow transplant unit, and then at Henry Ford Hospital’s bone marrow transplant unit. She went on to build a survivorship clinic for the Henry Ford Cancer Institute.

She has a bachelor of science from the University of Michigan School of Nursing and a master of science from the University of Pennsylvania.

Canedo attended Corunna Public Schools and has lived in the Fowlerville area for 10 years. She is married and has two boys, a preschooler and a student at Fowlerville Community Schools.

“When you become a mother, you see your own in all the children of your community. They deserve to have food on the table and parents shouldn’t have to work 2-3 jobs just to pay the bills,” she said.

Canedo also said she is a strong supporter of voting rights and opposes changes that disenfranchise voters. Canedo also opposes plans, now on hold, to put a hyperscale data center in Howell Township.

Canedo is the only Democrat to file for the seat. The district includes the City of Howell; the Townships of Cohoctach, Conway, Deerfield, Handy, Hartland, Howell, Iosco, Marion, Oceola, and Unadilla; Precinct 4 in southern Tyrone Township, and all but the southeast corner of Putnam Township.
