This coming weekend will mark the 73rd year that the Leroy Township Firefighters Association will put on its Field Days and Ox Roast in Webberville. The Association is comprised of the 25 current firefighters at the NIESA Leroy Fire & Rescue Station as well as five supporters—a total of 30 members.
The fire department chief is Rod Pfiester, while the association president is Chris Joseph.
The three days of activities— Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Sept. 27-28-29)— include a Saturday parade at 2 p.m. through the downtown with Tom Coe, an 18 year veteran of department serving as grand marshal.
Also planned are a Kids Parade on Saturday at 9 a.m., the Arts & Crafts at the Community Barn, live music on Friday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. with the ‘Handsome Pete’ Band’ and on Saturday from 6 to 10:30 p.m. with ‘Hollywood Vinyl’, a Farm Tractor Pull on Saturday, and a Garden Tractor Pull on Sunday. Most of these events will take place at the Fire Hall grounds, although the two tractor pulls are held on North Main Street in Downtown Webberville.
While carnival rides and games of chance will once again be operating on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, a new carnival—Clark Attractions—will be providing them. The carnival will include a mix of adult and kiddie rides, as well as inflatibles and family-friendly games.
The ox burgers and ox soup will be served at the Fire Hall on Friday and Saturday, starting at noon. Last year 1,100 pounds of ox roast was cooked, with over 7,000 burgers sold.
Help is needed to serve the ox burgers; call Larry Bloom at 517-899-5003 to volunteer.
Several other activities, put on by other community groups, also are taking place during the Field Days celebration. The Webberville Lions Club will host a Social Barn next to the Fire Hall grounds on both Friday and Saturday. The burgers are also available there. The Webberville United Methodist Women and the Webberville Garden Club will host their annual Bazaar, Bake Sale, and Flea Market at the Community Barn.
The Webberville Garden Club is also sponsoring a Pumpkin Decorating Contest for area boys and girls sixth grade and under. Entries will be accepted from 3 pm. Friday and until 3 p.m. Saturday at the Barn. The Webberville Friends of the Library, meanwhile, is hosting a Pluck-A-Duck game booth on both days with prizes guaranteed for young participants.
Also planned is an Ox Burger Eating Contest that takes place on Saturday at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, starting at noon, the Webberville FFA and FFA Alumni will put on their Chicken BBQ Dinner at the Fire Hall.
