April 24, 1943 to December 15, 2020.

     Sister of Ken (Betty) Brown Jr, Dale (Sherry) Brown, Howard (Medrina) Johnson.

   Daughter of Kenneth Brown, Sr. and Elva Johnson.

    Loving mother of Robert (Pamela) Ish, Kevin Ish, Ryan (Danielle) Ish, Rachelle Cleary.

    Grandmother of Nicholas, Zachary, Jaclyn, Mackenzie, Mitchell, Kendal,Kelli, Katelin, Madelynne, Robert and Emerson.

    We need to include the countless number of kids who needed a grandma, for a moment or forever.

     Great grandmother to Colt, Chloe, Colt and Chasity.

    Joyce was the face and voice of The Grand Nickel Party Store in Fowlerville, and so much more.

    The organizer of all holidays, celebrations and events in her family, and so much more.

    A favorite aunt to dozens of nieces and nephews, and so much more. 

     A kind, caring and thoughtful friend to hundreds of people, and so much more.

     Her love and guidance are summed up in those three words.

    "So much more."

     Her children would tease her about her "Quick Draw" prowess with a slipper, flip-flop or section of Hotwheel track. Quite a few Facebook memes were exchanged over the years on that topic. All in good fun, of course.

     Her motherly love showed itself in so many ways. One of which was the skill displayed with her high-heeled shoe on the dance floor of a wedding during a brawl. She had thought one of her "Babies" was involved. For the record, he wasn't.

    That story of her life, and so much more, has risen to family legend.

     Together with Robert Ish, they raised and provided unconditional love for four children. Though they separated years ago, they remained a big part of each other's lives.

     With regard to Joyce's life, a few paragraphs can do no justice.

    There was So. Much. More.

     Visitation was held Tuesday, December 22, from 11:00 to 3:00 pm at Herrmann Funeral Home, 1005 E. Grand River. Fowlerville Michigan 48836

FDL Response to New COVID Emergency Order 

    In response to Emergency Order MCL 333.2253 issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Fowlerville District Library will be open by appointment only and will continue to offer curbside service during our regular hours. The use of our curbside is encouraged.  Each appointment will be limited to thirty minutes by one household at a time and can be arranged by calling or emailing the library. Masks will be required.  We will also be offering print by email which can be picked up through curbside or in our Entryway. Your first ten copies each day are FREE.  Internet is always available for patron use in our parking lot and side yard. Please continue to use the book dropbox outside the building or leave your items in the library lobby, when available.

    Step 2: One hour after your request has been made, please come to the Library and park in the curbside pickup designated parking located in front of the side yard.

    Step 3: From your car, call the Library and someone will come out with your requested materials.

   Step 4: Please present your library card or driver's license and your materials will be given to you.

Beyond the Book Series: The Hundred-Foot Journey: Thursday, January21st, at 6:30 pm via—Zoom

Adults –January’s selection in our "Life From Another Perspective Theme" for our Beyond the Book Group is The Hundred-Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais. Please read the book and watch the movie at home, then meet up with friends on Zoom to discuss them both. Everyone who signs up will get an opportunity to check out the movie and watch it on their own.  Terrance ‘Terry’ Devine

     With the heart of a true Gladiator, Terry Devine went down swinging on December 12, 2020, surrounded by his loved ones.

       Terry was born on June 22, 1944, the third of six children, to Fritz and Edna Devine.  He grew up in Fowlerville with his siblings, Jim, Fred, Karen, Kathleen, and Pat, where he remained a fixture in the community throughout all his days.

      Terry married the love of his life and his best friend, Jamie Harmon in 1973 and together they raised 4 children: Reggie (Tina), Cheryl (Rod/Bob), Terry (Michelle), and Erin (Dan) who will forever adore him.  He had unconditional love for his grandchildren: Micheal, Whitney, Brie (Joe), Chris (Ashley), Kyleigh, Daniel, Jon, and Eli, as well as for his great-grandchildren, siblings, nephews, nieces, and his non-biological sons, Duane and Mark.  Terry left beautiful memories with anyone and everyone he encountered.

     Terry was undeniably the best of the best.  The best husband, the best dad, the best friend, the best grandfather, brother, and uncle.  He’s always been an incredibly devoted family man, the man you could count on.  Terry Devine was the hardest working man you’d ever meet.  He was a Union Carpenter for 50 years and took great pride in the work he did.  An always charming and gregarious man, he had an almost magically contagious positivity.  You’d never find him too far from his families events, for he’s always been everyone's number one fan.  If not there, you’d find him watching anything with a ball or a puck, channeling his passion for life by rooting on his teams to victory.

       Sparks flew not only during his many years as a firefighter, but also in his many adventures with Jamie.  His family and friends will forever cherish each moment and good time they shared with him.  Terry’s light will shine on in our hearts for the rest of our days, along with the warmth, wit, and kindness that he shared so easily.

   Fowlerville 1st United Methodist Church invites you to a

Longest Night Service on Monday, Dec 21, at 6:30pm.

    Some of you might be wondering what the “Longest Night” service is? 

     It recognizes that the winter solstice (Dec 21) is the longest period of darkness for our part of the world. The Christmas season is often marked by expressions of joy, excitement, and happiness. It’s a time for family to gather and for churches to worship pointing to the hope that is found in the coming of the Christ child. 

    However, this service also recognizes the “darkness” that many people go through at this time of the year, things such as grief over the loss of a loved one, or illness, divorce, loss of a job, loss of a home and other things too numerous to mention. Having suffered loss such as this, it can be a difficult time for many of us. And this with Covid-19 we have experienced many new challenges.

     If you find yourself longing for the light of a “new day” and the light of Christ, you will not be alone as we share in the liturgy of prayer and reflection on the longest night of the year. You have the option of joining us in person at Fowlerville 1st UMC located at 201 S Second St, with face masks required, or on our Facebook site Fowlerville United Methodist Church.  Secretary of State to offer more online, self-service station options this spring

    Michiganders will soon have more ways to do business with the Secretary of State, including renewing their standard and enhanced driver’s licenses and state identification cards at self-service stations and online. They will also be able to go online to request their own driving records and, when eligible, add a motorcycle endorsement to their license.

    “This spring, customers will be able to do even more of their business with us at our self-service stations and from their homes,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. “This is another way we are continuously improving the customer experience at the Department of State.”

    The new options will be available in March of 2021 thanks to a long-desired technology rehaul of the driver-record database. That new system will be securely merged with the upgraded vehicle record database that Secretary Benson implemented shortly after she was sworn into office in 2019. Work to rehaul the driver database has been in process since then.

    The changes will also enable customers to use the more than 130 self-service stations the department has in branch offices and other locations statewide, including select Meijer, Kroger, and local grocery stores, to request an ID replacement, and add their name to the state’s organ donor registry. Transactions on the machines are currently offered in English, Spanish, Arabic and Vietnamese. All accept credit card payments and some accept cash.

     New procedures will also be implemented:

    --An electronic lien and title program will begin, making lien and title information available online for lienholders in lieu of a paper certificate of title.

    --The graduated driver licensing process will be simplified to reduce customer visits to the branch.

    --Mechanic testing registration will be available online only to mechanics with a Michigan driver’s license or state ID. Also, while the new system is installed, from January 15 to March 15, online registration for mechanic tests will not be available at all, and mechanics will need to make appointments at their branch offices to register for a test.

    Additional details and customer conveniences made possible by the technology rehaul will be announced closer to the launch. Visit Michigan.gov/SOS to access online services and to find a self-service station near you.

 Russell ‘Rusty’ Elliott

    Fowlerville lost a very longstanding and unique member of the community on December 3, 2020.  Russell (Rusty) Owen Elliott gave into his illnesses and, even though he fought the good fight, he wasn’t able to overcome this last round of challenges. For those of us who knew him well, we have lost a very unique and special father, father-in-law, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend. 

     Rusty was born July 10, 1933 to Harry and Eva Elliott in Fowlerville, Michigan. He was born on the farm, literally, as he was apparently not patient enough to wait for his mom to get to the hospital. Rusty remained in Fowlerville all of his life with his two brothers, Richard (Abe) and Allen, and his sisters, Ardis and Janet. 

     He married Nila Lee Jones in 1954 and together they raised 4 children: Brian (Linda), Jeff (Cathy), Jackie (Fred) and Brad (Laura). He enjoyed his grandchildren: Justin (Dawn), Russell (Hallie), Joshua (CJ), Cody (Nikki), Natasha, Shane, Ashley (Rob) and Kyle. He also took pride in his great-grandchildren: Hunter, Joel, Caleb, Jocelyn, Luke, Caroline and was anticipating the arrival of a new great-granddaughter in April. Although he was not traditional, his unique style touched each and every one of them in a special way.

    Rusty was preceded in death by his father, mother, two brothers and sister Ardis. 

    Along with his family and friends, Rusty enjoyed many other things in life. He spent several years riding and coveting his motorcycles. He made several trips around the U.S. from Pike’s Peak to gold mining in Alaska which he still often spoke about. His plan was to ride his motorcycle when he turned 100 years old and, although he won’t be able to do that in person, we suspect he’ll be riding right next to his brother Abe when the time comes.

     If you know Rusty, you know about his treasured John Deere tractors. He has enjoyed many years of searching, collecting and caretaking of his valued collection. Each year, the Fowlerville 4th of July parade was a highlight for our family as Rusty would sit nearby with pride as family members drove the tractors through the parade.

    And one can't help but think of Rusty when you hear the word “coffee”. Rarely did a day go by where he would miss his 2-3 visits to the various town coffee shops for that “cup of coffee”. You could mark your calendar and clock for the location and time!  Even though it was about the coffee, the company and communication with his friends and community members was the driver and the most important part of his routine. Along with this routine was his love of just taking a slow drive around the countryside. He took the time to always enjoy every bit of it and still knew almost every house, who lived there and when. He always enjoyed the little things in life.

    We have all been touched in some way by having Rusty in our lives and he will be dearly missed. We will not be having a service at this time, but are planning a fitting celebration of life for Rusty that we know he would enjoy and approve of sometime next year when we can all get together. In the meantime, please keep him in your prayers and thoughts and take a moment to have a cup of coffee and take a drive around the countryside in his honor.
