Fowlerville Library to host Homeschool Round Up on Sept. 3

Homeschool families are invited to attend the Homeschool Round Up from 1 to 3 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Fowlerville District Library.

Homeschool families will receive a library tour and have the opportunity to learn about the many resources available to assist them with their homeschool journey. Families can try Brainfuse HelpNow, the library’s online resource for free live tutoring and homework help. Immersive reality books will be on hand for virtual and augmented reality exploration with a smartphone. Who doesn’t want to “travel” through Outer Space to the asteroid belt or experience a simulation of fighting a fire with “real” firefighters?!

Plus, homeschoolers can explore the Library of Things collection that features numerous fun and educational kits to check out with a library card. LitWit kits include reading games and activities that focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Story Time in a Bag includes books, flannelgraphs, activities and more to teach preschool concepts with some just for fun like dinosaurs, pizza, and visiting the farm. Backpack Buddies have a stuffy friend, like Paddington Bear, the Cat in the Hat, and Corduroy, with matching DVD and storybook. Learning Props Games are available for counting and colors. Fully-loaded Kindles for junior and teen readers are available, too.

“I was homeschooled from grade 3 through high school and spent many hours at the public library,” said Isabella Rowan, library director. “I have firsthand knowledge of the value of libraries for homeschoolers, and I can’t wait to meet local homeschool families and show them what our library has to offer.”

The Homeschool Round Up also presents the opportunity for homeschool families to meet each other and swap resources. Families are invited to bring materials they no longer need to share with other families.

“Maybe you have a plastic bin full of kindergarten materials, but your child is now in a higher grade. You are welcome to bring it to this event and make it available to another family who may have a kindergartner,” Rowan suggested.

Two new resources that will be offered to homeschool families beginning in September are a homeschool bulletin board in the children’s area where homeschool families can post special events, ideas, and resources; and, Homeschool Hangout that will be held from 1-2 pm on the first and third Wednesdays of the month beginning September 17. Homeschool Hangout will feature a variety of open stations for self-directed learning plus one special STEAM activity. Registration is not required for Homeschool Hangout.

Fowlerville District Library is located at 130 South Grand Avenue in Fowlerville. For more information about this event or other library services, please call 517-223-9089 or visit www.fowlervillelibrary.org
