Hartland Audubon Nature Club to learn about Kirtland’s warbler on April 1st

Michigan’s expert on the Kirtland’s warbler, Bill Rapai, will visit the Hartland Audubon Nature Club on April 1, at 7pm to speak about this iconic bird.

The Kirtland’s warbler is the rarest warbler species in North America and 98% spend spring and summer in Michigan. The total population fell below 400 birds in the 1970’s and 1980’s, driven largely by a loss of habitat and the introduction of a parasite.

A small group of dedicated biologists, researchers and volunteers vowed to save Kirtland’s warbler despite long odds. Come hear Bill’s story of the warbler’s survival and gradual recovery, the people and policies that kept it from extinction and the ongoing challenges that may again jeopardize the bird’s future.

Our guest speaker authored The Kirtland’s Warbler: The story of a bird’s fight against extinction and the people who saved it. He currently serves as Executive Director of Michigan’s Kirtland’s Warbler Alliance and was past president of Grosse Pointe Audubon Society. He has traveled world-wide to view and research birds and was an award-winning reporter and editor for the Grand Forks Herald, the Detroit Free Press, and the Boston Globe.

Join us at the Hartland Education Support Service Center, 9525 E. Highland Road, Howell. Use the west entrance and look for our sign in the hall. Meetings are free and open to the public. For more information go to www.hartlandaudubon.weebly.com or visit us on Facebook.

Dick was born on August 25, 1938, to Clayton and Carmon (Loree) Damman in Fowlerville.     He began what became a lifelong love of music by singing in the Fowlerville First United Methodist Church choir. When Dick was 12, the farm was sold, and he started working with his father to found Damman & Loree Gravel Company (later D&J Gravel Company), where he continued working throughout high school. He graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1956, where he enjoyed playing cornet in the band and playing tackle and end for the league co-champion football team. He enjoyed staying in contact with classmates and attending reunions regularly.

Dick briefly attended Flint Junior College in Flint, Mich., before joining the Michigan National Guard and serving for eight years. He earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Michigan State University in 1965, a field in which he worked throughout his career. Following graduation, he joined Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., in Louisville, Ky., where he earned his Certified Public Accountant designation.

He later shifted to the business side of academia, accepting roles with increasing responsibility in the business offices at the University of Michigan, Central Michigan University, and Purdue University. He later worked for Great Lakes Chemical Corporation in West Lafayette, Ind., before establishing his own tax and financial services firm there. Combining his love for sports with his professional skills, for more than 30 years he spent Purdue game days working on the statistics staff for Purdue Football and Men's Basketball games.

Dick's passion for Big 10 college sports was a thread that ran throughout his life. He was a fervent supporter of both Michigan State and Purdue, taking great pleasure in the excitement that collegiate sports brings. His interests extended beyond the stadium as well, with music, fishing, and woodworking keeping him busy. He also was an avid follower of World War II history and airplanes, and he found joy tracking Indy auto racing teams. He was an excellent cook, a skill honed during his days as a cook in the National Guard, able to make delicious meals with even limited ingredients. He took pride in his homes, maintaining his lawns and gardens beautifully.

Preceded in death by his parents, Dick is survived by his brother Ronald Damman and wife Betty of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; his sister Bette Hunt, and her husband Dennis of Foristell, Mo.; his former wife Joanne Brundage of Kalamazoo, with whom he shared a close and mutually supportive friendship, and three adult children: Julie White of Kalamazoo, John Damman of Indianapolis, and Jill Damman (Griffin Caruolo) of Denver, along with several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Dick will be interred in Fowlerville this summer during a private ceremony. Those wishing to memorialize Dick by making a donation may do so through a tribute gift to: Heritage Community of Kalamazoo Foundation, 2400 Portage Street, Kalamazoo MI 49001; Centrica Care Navigators Rose Arbor Place, 7100 Stadium Drive, Kalamazoo, MI 49009; or The Parkinson's Foundation, 5757 Waterford District Drive, Suite 310, Miami, FL 33126.

Consumers Energy offers bill help options for seniors in need this season

Michigan’s frigid winter has left its mark and for senior customers who may have seen a seasonal increase in their bills this winter, Consumers Energy stands ready to assist by connecting those age 65 and older with energy saving strategies and payment resources to help them pay their heating costs. This month, through March 31, Consumers Energy will be proactively reaching out to select senior citizens with an opportunity to review seniors’ accounts and offer personalized payment assistance options to get them back in control of their energy bills.

“We want our customers to know that we are here for them 24/7, in any season,” said Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s vice president of customer experience. “And that means we’re here to help them save energy and save money. Whether it’s through our various energy saving programs or through our payment assistance options, we can help our neighbors most in need.”

Home heating costs account for about 30 percent of customers’ energy bills, with water heaters alone accounting for almost 15 percent. In addition to payment assistance options, Consumers Energy reminds customers there are some simple steps they can take to limit their usage and save even more.

One of the easiest ways to save is by installing a programmable smart thermostat. Doing so could save as much as 20 percent on heating costs. Customers typically save 1 percent to 3 percent for every degree they dial down their thermostat. Plus, customers can save money by installing a programmable or wi-fi thermostat, often at reduced costs through ConsumersEnergyStore.com.

Seniors interested in participating in the Senior Check-in can call 888-535-9280 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Senior Check-ins will connect customers with the various payment assistance resources available that apply to their situation.

As a senior citizen, you qualify for the following assistance:

--Winter Protection: Pay part of your charges through winter months while being protected from a service disconnect during the season.

--Electric Senior Citizen Bill Credits: This income assistance credit is designed to help seniors on fixed incomes.

*The Electric Senior Citizen provision helps you with your electric bill with an added credit of $4 to your bill each month. Qualifying customers must meet age requirements and be the head of the household.

*If you are eligible to receive the Electric Income Assistance credit, you will no longer receive the Electric Senior Citizen credit.

More resources:

--Michigan Aging & Adult Services Agency: Local agencies that are located within communities around the state that provide a variety of senior services and activities. --Elder Law of Michigan: Older adults and people with disabilities can get help paying for the cost of basic needs like food, medicine, healthcare, utilities, housing and taxes.

--If your income is at or below 110% of the federal poverty level, you may qualify for the Home Heating Credit. You may apply for a Home Heating Credit for the 2024 tax year to help pay your energy bill. Even if you live in a rented apartment, mobile home or your income does not require you to file taxes, you can still apply for this credit. The deadline for filing the 2024 Michigan Home Heating Credit Claim MI-1040CR-7 is Sept. 30.

There is additional help available for anyone who needs assistance with their energy bill, no matter your age. Call 2-1-1, a free resource that connects people with nonprofit organizations or visit consumersenergy.com/assistance.

Donations sought for Fowlerville High School Alumni Scholarship Fund

It’s that time of year - time to consider making a donation to the Fowlerville High School Alumni Scholarship fund. Each year, for nearly 50 years, donations received for the FHS Alumni Scholarship fund have enabled the alumni association to award scholarships to members of the current graduating class.

According to FHS Alumni president, Judy Epley Recker, usually the donations are in memory of loved ones and classmates who were graduates of FHS. However, many donations have been made in the name of individuals who, in some manner, had a connection to the Fowlerville Schools or the Fowlerville community, such as a custodian, a coach, a faculty or Board of Education member, or a community supporter.

Donations received are recognized in both the alumni program and a published list in the News & Views. The FHS Alumni Association is a registered 501(c)(3) organization. Donations can be sent to the FHS Alumni Association, Box 446, Fowlerville, MI 48836. Donations are accepted year around an in any amount; to be included in the 2025 program, donations should be received by May 15. If questions, please contact the Alumni association treasurer, Meghan Swain-Kuch at 517-672-1747 or meghanmswain@gmail.com

You may also recognize family and friends by submitting a business card for advertising purposes. An advertising entry may replace the traditional listing. Your generosity not only helps maintain the scholarship program but will help a graduating senior with college/trade school expenses.

Fowlerville High School Alumni announces plans for 2025       gathering

The 131st FHS Alumni banquet & gathering will be Saturday, June 7, at the high school, according to President Judy Recker. The alumni officers are busy making contact with “special” classes who will be recognized at the event, but a reminder to all FHS graduates and friends, you are most welcome to come and share the night with all others. Reminiscing with former teachers, classmates, and old friends is a special occasion. MARK YOUR CALENDAR, FHS ALUMS!

Tickets to attend the gathering which includes a social hour (or two) and banquet will go on sale in early May. Tickets will be available for $25 each if purchsed ahead of time or $30 at the door. Once again, Reggie’s Barber Shop will have tickets available for sale before the event.

As the Alumni Association has done for the past 48 years, scholarships will be presented to several members of the 2025 FHS graduating class. Presentation will be at the Senior Awards Night in May. Donations in any amount are welcomed. Please send donations any time to the: FHS Alumni Association, Box 446, Fowlerville, MI 48836. The alumni association is a 501(3)(c) organization.
