Fowlerville Rotary cancels annual Dawn Patrol due to COVID-19 pandemic

    The Fowlerville Rotary Club has announced the cancellation of the annual Dawn Patrol due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the crowd-size and social-distancing restrictions that are now in place. The Patrol, which  features an airplane fly-in and all-you-can-eat breakfast, is held the first Sunday after Labor Day at the Maple Grove Airport, north of town. This would have marked the 70th year for the area event.

    Rotary Club officials, in making their annoucement, thanked all of the pilots and area residents who have attended the event over the years, along with the volunteers who help put on the breakfast and assist with other activities.  

 Webberville church to sponsor community festival on Sunday, Sept. 13

    Calvary Baptist Church of Webberville invites you to be part of the Community September Spectacular on Sunday, Sept. 13.  The day begins at 10:30 AM with an inspirational worship service. This will be followed at 12:30 PM with a free picnic.  Afternoon activities will include a Kids Karnival, face painting, cotton candy and popcorn, bingo and more. Everyone is invited and everything is FREE!  You can come any time between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM and join the fun. 

    At 2:00 p.m. a free drawing will be held for door prizes from area merchants and Ice Cream will be passed out.    

     During this event we ask that you practice social distancing when inside and outside enjoying the events.  Hand sanitizer will be available.  When you enter the building, we ask that you wear your mask.

 Fundraiser planned on Sept. 15-16-17 for the Williamston Area Senior Center 

    The Williamston Area Senior Center will be conducting a used book, VHS, DVD and CD Fundraiser Sale on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 15, 16 and 17.  The sale will be conducted at the Senior Center from 10:30am – 2:00pm and on Wednesday also from 6:00pm - 8:00pm  Any question please call 655-5173 and leave a message. 

    Donations for hard cover and paperbacks books, DVD, CD’s and VHS or best offer. 100 % of the proceeds will benefit the Williamston Area Senior Center.    

    Covid-19 Guidelines will be ENFORCED – wearing proper face covering, social distancing and temperatures will be taken at the door.  Hand sanitizer and disinfectant will be provided on the premises.

    The Fowlerville District Library building is open at regular hours and continuing to offer curbside service (highly recommended). In compliance with executive order No. 2020-147; face masks are required for all library patrons and staff as well as maintaining the social distancing of 6 feet. A limit of 12 patrons is allowed in the building at one time. Patrons entering the building are encouraged to make their visit as short as possible. In keeping with social distancing and cleaning guidelines, as well as to ensure the health and safety of FDL Patrons,the Library will have a limited number of computers available for patron use. There will be a strict time limit of one hour per day, per patron, for each computer. FDL’s Wi-Fi now reaches out in the side yard.

How to Use Curbside Service

    Step 1: You can make requests: by calling the Library directly, emailing us or make your holds through the FDL’s card catalog (Max 10 items)  --Not sure what you would like to read? Use our reader’s advisory at the desk, they can help! All you need is to give them a subject, author, or genre, and they will do the rest.

    Step 2: One hour after your request has been made, please come to the Library and park in the curbside pickup    designated parking located in front of the side yard.

    Step 3: From your car, call the Library and someone will come out with your requested materials.

   Step 4: Please present your library card or driver's license and your materials will be given to you.

Reading to Bosco Through Zoom: Not running on Monday, September 7, 2020 due to the Library being closed for Labor Day, reading to Bosco through Zoom will resume on Monday, September 14, 2020

All Ages- Read to Bosco on Zoom! You can now reserve a time for your child to read to Fowlerville District Library's therapy dog! Each child will be given a 15 minute time slot to read to Bosco and must be preregistered. Registration is needed each week and spots are limited. Zoom invites will be sent out on Fridays.

Outdoor Storytimes with Mrs. D: Tuesdays, September 1 – September 22, 2020 10:30AM in Library Side Yard

Preschool -Bring a blanket to sit on in our side yard and join in the fun with songs, fingerplays and a story or two. Social distancing will be enforced and feel free to wear a mask, if desired. Registration is not required for this program. Weather permitting.

All Ages -Come in during September for a word search to complete and turn it in by September 30 to be put in a drawing to win a prize. Virtual Homeless Sleeping Mats Tutorial: Thursday, September 17, 2020 5:30pm – 6:30pm

Adults - Learn how you can help with this popular community service program. Our team will teach participants how to complete each stage, from making 'plarn', to crocheting (a size N hook is needed). No crochet experience is needed, as there are opportunities for all to participate. This program will be provided via Zoom and registration is required. The video will be posted on our Youtube Channel afterward to share or for reference. Bags are available at the library to pick up before the program, if needed.

Virtual Beyond the Book: Thursday, September 24, 2020 6:30pm

Adults -We are back with our Beyond the Book series and going virtual. This month we are reading Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fannie Flagg.Participants will get an opportunity to check out the movie and watch it at home. We will meet up virtually on Zoom to discuss the book and the movie. Registration is required with a $10 deposit and a valid email address, to receive a book and a Zoom link. Registration is done in person inside or through curbside service at the library. Books are limited and only available to one per household.

 MSU Extension offering live online webinar on Pantry Food Safety 

     Michigan State University Extension is a resource for food safety training. Food Safety Educators will be hosting a live online webinar focusing on Pantry Food Safety—It’s Your Job.  The program will cover why food safety in a food bank/pantry is important, handwashing, personal hygiene, cleaning and sanitizing, receiving food product, storage of food product, re-packaging, and the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Law. 

     This webinar is based on current food safety and Michigan Food Code as it relates to food banks/and food pantries.  Participants are encouraged to ask their questions during the Q & A portion of the event. Food Safety Educators will be available for this session and will provide the most up-to-date research-based information.  Organizations that register participants will receive incentives upon submission of evaluation.

 Fowlerville 4th of July Fireworks Show cancelled for 2020 due to restrictions 

   The Fowlervillel 4th of July Fireworks has been cancelled for 2020 due to the COVID-19 restrictions still in place for outdoor activities. 

    “After numerous ongoing discussions with the Village of Fowlerville attorney, it is with great disappointment that we announce that we must cancel our  fireworks show this year,” said Brandon Denby, the committee chair.

     “Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we were forced to postpone our annual fireworks that has been held for over 40 years in the Village on July 4,” he said. “Our committee has repeatedly attempted to move our show to a different date since them,  but efforts have come to no avail.”

      The committee is still planning at this time to host its 2nd Annual ‘Wreaths Across America’ on Dec. 19 at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville. This event honors our fallen heroes in a beautiful and moving tribute to all of our veterans who have passed before us. Details on this event will be coming at a later time.

    Preparations have also begun for the Sunday, July 4  2021 Fireworks, Parade and other activities. Details concerning this event will be released at a later date.

   “I would like to thank my fellow committee members, everyone at the Fowlerville Village office as well as the many volunteers for all their hard work,” said Denby. “This has been a tough year, and tough decisions have been made. Thank you to our community for your support this year as always.

 Crossroads UM Church offering drive-through Swiss steak dinner Sept. 26

    Swiss steak dinners, in a new drive-through setup, are returning soon at Crossroads United Methodist Church.  

    The church, corner of Haslett and Zimmer roads, east of Haslett and north of Williamston, will offer its first dinner of the fall at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26.  All food will be packaged and distributed from the parking lot as long as supplies last.  

    Diners will enter the parking lot from Zimmer Road, paying as they enter and picking up a tag showing the number of dinners purchased.  After picking up their dinners, customers will exit onto Haslett Road.  There will be no pre-orders.  Cost is $9 per person, regardless of age.

    The familiar menu of previous years’ Crossroads dinners—Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy, cold slaw, vegetable, roll, butter and dessert--will continue.

    A portion of the proceeds will go to the church youth programs.
