George W. Lee Civil War Round Table to meet this Tuesday, March 13
   The George W. Lee Civil War Round Table will be meeting this Tuesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. The meeting is at the Livingston County EMS Headquarters Building (aka John E. LaBelle Public Safety Complex), 1911 N. Tooley Rd, Howell. This building is located on the east side of Livingston County Airport. Tooley Road is accessed off of M-59, about a quarter mile east of the intersection of M-59 & Grand River Ave.  
   The speaker for this month’s Round Table meeting is our own member, Rick Schmidt. Rick will talk on Class A small arms of the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. He has been interested in the Civil War since 1958, and has a large collection of items from the War He will bring in some of them for us to see then.
   Rick is a 50-year member of the NSSA - the North South Skirmish Association. He has also been involved with Living History, Battery B of the 1st Michigan Light Artillery for 10 years. So, Rick has an excellent background in Civil War history and is going to share his knowledge with us.

Battle of the Books Month of March
Teens 6th-12th grades. Read the books and then vote for your favorite during each week's battle. March begins on a Thursday, so weeks will run Thursday-Wednesday. Every voter will receive a prize for entering. Week 1: Wonder vs. Goodbye Stranger. Week 2: Hoot vs. Fuzzy Mud. Week 3: Because of Mr. Terupt vs. The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary. Week 4: The City of Ember vs. The Maze Runner.*One vote per voter per week please. Vote in person at the library.

Teens 6th-12th Grades. Join us at the Fowlerville Library after school on Fridays in March for a showing of some great movies based on books from this year's Battle of the Books! *Space is limited. Fowlerville Jazz Band, plus Macaroni  & Cheese Dinner at St. John’s Lutheran
    Looking for good food and entertainment on St. Patrick’s Day?  Join us for the Macaroni & Cheese Dinner and a concert by the F.H.S. Jazz Band on Saturday, March 17. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. 
      The event will benefit the Personal Needs Pantry Ministry at St. John’s which helps supply personal care products to local residents through Love INC of Greater Livingston County. Proceeds from the event will also support the F.H.S. Band. 
      “We are excited to share this evening of good fellowship and purpose with our local high school band members,” said Pastor Diane Greble of St. John’s. “Not only will our spirits be lifted and our plates be filled, but we will benefit these two organizations that do good for many members of the community, including the students who gain great gifts from being band members.”
    The meal will include four varieties of the American classic, macaroni and cheese, A “Fiesta” version will be offered as well as “St. Pat’s Favorite Mac,” with a twist on corned beef and cabbage. A salad bar and brownie sundae bar will round out the menu. Tickets for the meal and the concert are $10 per person and are on sale now. Fowlerville Garden Club hosting Rose & Hydrangea Presentation March 14
    The Fowlerville Garden Club is hosting guest speakers from Bordine’s at our upcoming Wednesday, March 14 ,meeting.  Our speakers will be giving a presentation on growing and caring for roses and hydrangeas. 
     The public is invited to this free event to be held at the Fowlerville VFW Hall, 215 Veterans Drive.  Refreshments will be served at 6:30 PM and our presentation will begin promptly at 7:00 PM.  Join us for an informative session on roses and hydrangeas, some of the most beautiful and popular outdoor plants.

Annual Fur Ball help support important programs at County Human Society
    The Humane Society of Livingston County, which provides medical care, food, and shelter for the homeless animals in our community, will hold its 17th Annual Fur Ball on Saturday April 14, 2018, at Crystal Gardens, 5768 East Grand River, Howell.
    This year we will be “mixing it up” with a Las Vegas Style Casino Night!  The evening will also include strolling dinner, premium bar, live and silent auction, DJ and much more!  A silent auction begins at 5:30pm; dinner will begin at 6:00pm, and Gaming will begin at 8:15pm. 
     Tickets are $110 (or $200 per couple) until April 1, when the ticket price will increase to $125.  Tickets can be purchased at www.furballlivingston.org.  All proceeds will help provide care for the homeless animals at the Humane Society of Livingston County.  Sponsorship opportunities for interested businesses are available, and auction items are still being accepted. 
    Last year, thanks to the generosity of the Livingston County Community, HSLC cared for over 900 unwanted, neglected and homeless cats and dogs, and responded to nearly 1,000 additional requests for help from the community.  The HSLC receives zero dollars from the county, state or from any federal agency.  We are 100% percent fully funded from events as well as the generosity of our donors and sponsors throughout the year – so your support is greatly appreciated!

Rita Lewis

     Rita Lewis, age 89 passed away February 25, 2018 in Haslett.  She was the daughter of Reinhold and Hulda Peterson and was born in Fowlerville on October 13, 1928.  Rita was a long time resident of Fowlerville and member of St. John's Lutheran Church.  Most recently she resided at Brookdale Meridian Assisted Living.  Rita retired from the State of Michigan in 1990 and after retirement she enjoyed playing bingo and spending time at Elbow Lake.
      Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin and son Randy.  She was also predeceased by brother Arthur and sisters Viola Swan and Betty Douglass.  She is survived by sons Melvin (Karman) and Ritchie (Wendy); two granddaughters, Amy (Dan) Sanborn and Amber (Joe) Rozycki; and four great grandchildren, Taylor and Cade Sanborn and Elle and Brody Rozycki.  Also surviving is her twin sister, Nita Church.  
     Visitation was held on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at Herrmann Funeral Home.  Funeral service was held at St. John's Lutheran Church on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.  Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Pierce

     Elizabeth Ann Pierce, 77, of Fowlerville, MI passed away after a long illness on February 19, 2018, surrounded by family and her beloved dog, Charlie.
     She was born on November 2, 1940 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to the late Fanny and Leroy Ruedy.  She became a Michigander as a child, and was currently residing in Fowlerville, MI.
    She loved working in her flower beds, cheering on her beloved Ohio State, but most of all spending time with family, friends and her animals.
    She is survived by her children, Vicki Hayden of Fowlerville,  Sheila Lindsey of Fort Gratiot, Joe (Cathy) Hayden of Williamston; granddaughters, Samantha Lindsey of Omaha, Nebraska and Megan Lindsey of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Marilyn (Robert) Priest of Greenville, South Carolina; mother-in-law, Sophie Pierce; sister-in-law, Susi Pierce; and stepsons, Hank Pierce and Keith Pierce.
    A special thank you to her devoted caregivers: Cindy Foreman, Denise Wolverton and Whitney Gallagher.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Pierce.     Visitation took place from 10 a. m.  – 12 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 with the funeral held at 12 p.m. at Herrmann Funeral Home in Fowlerville. Burial was in Alchin Cemetery in Webberville.
