Village of Byron celebrates Bicentennial on July 12-13

The Village of Byron was founded around July 13, 1824 by Judge Samuel Dexter. What began as a mill town on the Shiawassee River has developed into a close-knit community ready to celebrate an impressive milestone. This party has been 200 years in the making, and the Bicentennial Committee has put together an exciting two-day event to celebrate the ‘small village with a big heart.’

The celebration will kick off on Friday, July 12th, with activities and food from downtown to Centennial Park (in front of the High School) going on from 5:00 pm to dark. A special ceremony will launch the party at 6:00 pm in the town square, including special guests, the opening of a time capsule, and the announcement of contest winners. At 6:15 pm, particpants and spectators should meet at the Post Office for the start of the 5k race and families can enjoy the Fun Zone from 5:00 pm until dark at the park.

Saturday, July 13th, starts at 11:00 am with the car and tractor show, historical tours and displays, and live events and activities at the Centennial Park, and concludes with a spectacular firework display at 10:00 pm, where your best viewing will be the home stands at the football stadium.

Join the Masons at noon on Saturday for a pig roast or check out the Boy Scout fun and food tent next to the Masonic Lodge from 2:00-7:00 pm. There will also be craft and food vendors by the park from noon until 6:00 pm.

Some highlights on Saturday include a corn hole tournament beginning at 11:00 am in the own square, the Fun Zone in the park from 11:00 am until dark, and the parade through downtown at 3:00 pm. Following the parade, join the Byron Robotics team as they demonstrate their robots and invite everyone to participate in their “Car Smash” fundraiser by the High School tennis courts.

The Cardboard Boat Regatta and Duck Race begin at 4:00 pm in the park by the river and a magic show follows from 5:30-6:15 pm at the park pavilion. There will be live music throughout the day, some during the car show at the Methodist Church from 11 am - 4:00 pm and some performances including Shiatown at the High School from 6:00-10:00 pm.

You can find a complete list of activities, how to register for events, and other important information at our Facebook page "Byron MI Bicentennial ", or scan the QR code below. A big thank you to our sponsors for your support and the Bicentennial Committee for your efforts to make this event a great time for all.

Donations sought for LESA’s ‘Backpack for Kids/Connect for Kids’ event

The Livingston Educational Service Agency is holding the 23rd Annual Backpacks for Kids/Connect for Kids event on Thursday, August 8th.

The event is organized by the Livingston Educational Service Agency and aims to provide essential school supplies to Livingston County students whose families are facing financial challenges.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community members, this event continues to thrive. We warmly invite you to join us in supporting local children by donating backpacks and school supplies.

On Friday, August 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., a Livingston ESA Bus will be stationed at Howell Walmart. We encourage families shopping for school supplies to consider picking up an extra set of pencils, a pack of paper, or even a backpack to contribute to our Annual Stuff the Bus Campaign.

Donations for the 2024 Livingston ESA “Backpacks for Kids” project are welcomed until August 1st. Drop off your contributions at the Livingston ESA’s Education Center, 1425 West Grand River Avenue, Howell, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. For more drop-off locations and donation information, please visit LivingstonESA.org and click on Community Resources/Backpacks for Kids.

Last year, your support allowed us to distribute over 1,500 backpacks filled with school essentials to students from Preschool through 12th Grade. This year, our goal remains to provide the same support to 1,500 students across Livingston County. It’s through the kindness of residents, churches, and local businesses like yours that we can make this event a true success.

Once again, the Backpacks for Kids event will be a drive-through experience on August 8th, across all five school districts. Look for further details on distribution as the date approaches.

For more information, please call (517) 540-6802 or visit LivingstonESA.org. Your continued support means the world to us and the children we serve.
