Donations being sought for Fowlerville High School Alumni Scholarship Fund

For the past 50 years officers of the Fowlerville High School Alumni Association have presented scholarships to seniors in the current graduating class at Fowlerville High School. Monies are raised yearly to enable the organization to present these awards at the annual Senior Awards Night. Well over 150 scholarships have been given out during this half century. The organization hopes to continue this tradition.

In addition to the presentation of the scholarships at the Senior Awards Night, the winners will be presented at the 130th FHS Alumni banquet on Saturday, June 8, 2024. The banquet is held at Fowlerville High School.

The scholarship fund is maintained through the many donations received in memory of loved ones who either were graduates of FHS or maintained strong connections to the school such as teachers, coaches, bus drivers, or friends of the school. Please feel free to make donations in any amount at any time of the year. Some send donations yearly; for some, it is a one-time donation.

Donations can be sent to FHS Alumni Association, Box 446, Fowlerville, MI 48836. Donations for 2024 should reach the Alumni by May 5, 2024. Alumni treasurer and advertising chair Meghan Swain-Kuch can be contacted at 517-672-1747 or meghanmswain@gmail.com.

If you wish to recognize family and friends by making a donation for either a business card size or large entry size (ex: 1/4 page in program) for advertising, rather than the traditional listing, that is acceptable.

Your generosity will not only help maintain the scholarship program, but will help a graduating senior with college/trade school expenses. The FHS Alumni Association is a 501(3)(c) organization. Please know that a Memorial list will be published in the ‘Fowlerville New & Views’ in late May.

Federal help available to home & business owners who suffered damages from severe August storms

Home and business owners in nine Michigan counties are now eligible for federal assistance to help recover from damages caused by severe storms, tornadoes and flooding in August 2023.

On Feb. 8th, President Joe Biden approved Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration in Eaton, Ingham, Ionia, Kent, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne counties. The declaration now opens the application process for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Individual Assistance (IA) for affected residents.

This FEMA assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

On August 23-24, residents of Livingston County experienced storms that caused damage to homes, businesses, and personal property. Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance at https://www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or by using the FEMA App.

Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service. Local Disaster Recovery Centers will also be set up for those who need help applying in person. Once those centers have been identified that information will be made available through the WHMI website, Livingston County Emergency Management social media sites, and by contacting local city, village, and township offices.

 David Lee Malcom

David Lee Malcom passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, in Mason, MI. He was born November 17,1939 to Carey and Mary Clella Malcolm in Howell, MI.

When growing up, he attended a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Fleming and Grand River then later graduated from Howell High School. After graduating, he made Fowlerville, MI his hometown with his wife of 60 years, Sally Malcolm along with his three daughters.

Throughout his lifetime, he held many diverse jobs such as: small engine repair, truck driving, lawn maintenance and snow removal, a burn barrel business, along with various other entrepreneurships. In his downtime, he was known for cruising the neighborhood and following his grandchildren’s endeavors.

One of his favorite memories with his grandchildren was pulling them around with his lawn mower in a barrel train he built by hand. He was also known for bringing home various stray animals and giving them a loving home along with knowing how to make a great bargain and building his own projects.

He survived by his daughters: Karen Malcolm, Kathy (Jerry) Cooper, Cris (Mike) Stock along with his grandchildren: Aidan Smyth, Kyle Cooper, Eric Cooper, Adam (Emily) Stock, Emily (Nathan) Dumminger, and Mia Stock.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carey and Mary Clella Malcolm, wife Sally Malcolm, and daughter Carrie L. Malcolm. A visitation will be held at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes - MacDonald Chapel in Howell on February 24th at 10am with a memorial service to follow at 11am.

 Ron Cooper

Before I begin dear readers, let me state that what follows come from the heart allowing you to see Ron Cooper, through the many eyes and words and experiences made all the more poignant by the countless hours spent with family, friends, acquaintances for a time, and others not coming freely to my mind. Some, remain with us, others departed on other paths in this world, and others gone ahead. None of this would have been possible, except for you. And in that spirit for all you have gifted with us, let me share with you as briefly as I can the life of, “My Love.”

Dawn Cooper

* * *

To begin: Ron (Coop to his many friends) Cooper was born to Frank Cranston and Dora June (Brooks) Cooper on July 12, 1950, in Jackson, MI. He died on February 4, 2024 at the age of 73, in Fowlerville, MI. He is survived by his daughter Kristin Cooper; brothers Lon (Nancy) Cooper and Kurt (Harumi) Cooper; step-siblings Diana Kaimon, Danny (Ann) Kaimon and sisters in-law Cherie (Colin) Frank and Kristina (Tony) Drumheller; mother-in-law Eleanor Watson; nephews Troy Beers, Darrin (Gabby) Beers, Andrew Drumheller and Brennan Drumheller; nieces Dana Traxler, Brooke Lohr, Sara (Scott) Bulldoser, Deniese (Justin) Halter, Tressa (Jeffrey) Barnett. And lastly myself, Dawn Cooper, his wife of 16 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents step-father Charles Kaimon, sister Diane Lyons, sister Andrea Gieske, brother Monty Hunter, and father-in-law Gary Watson.

This tells you his lineage, but who was he?

Ron was first and foremost a Marine. He served with pride and distinction, joining a brotherhood for his lifetime. Although injured in a serious accident in service he came back with the determination of a warrior. This was the first in a long story of adversity, faced and overcome that would be a common thread throughout his life. His Marine Pride bannered in the shop, the house, and on his car. And whenever he would see another Marine, he would greet them with a loud robust, “Oorah.” At such times smiling brighter, and with a youthful enthusiasm that would make him sit a bit straighter. Looking at him I would often see small glimpses of that young man that stepped up to the line in this now older man before me now. Finally, I would share that there is a pain physician in Michigan, with a Marine sword on his wall. Ron brought it hidden beneath a sheet prior to surgery, to inspire the efforts of a fellow Marine. It hangs as a testament to what this meant to this physician.

Ron was a proud member of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department. He spoke openly of how much he enjoyed being a part of the Department, rising to the rank of Detective. He enjoyed the challenge that it offered, wanting to see justice served for the families. But tempered it with a stronger desire to never sacrifice the freedom of someone unknowingly through a mistake. So he often told me he would not send someone to prison unless he was absolutely sure. Telling me of times, when he went against the grain to prove the innocence of others. He carried the scars of that service as well, being shot in the line of duty. He retained some of the bullets, and the shoulder was replaced. And others would speak of it, but he only rarely. Until his older years, as if to tell the younger people, “I am far tougher than you know.”

Ron was a tireless teacher to his last moments. He loved aviation from childhood, with a father that flew. He was an accomplished pilot, who encouraged others to consider flight. He tried to make it accessible to anyone with the desire and the passion. He wanted them to know the freedom that he found in the air. A plane accident in 1989, left him paralyzed, and forced his retirement from the Sheriff’s Department. But he returned to aircraft maintenance as an AP mechanic eventually getting his Inspection Authorization with a resilience, good humor, and a positivity that was infectious.

Those who are wheelchair bound often find themselves relegated to the fringes, and a shadow of their former selves. This would never be his story. He continued to work on planes, inventing a standing chair to allow him better access to engines. The hanger was always filled with aviation people from all walks of life. He would educate owners, help other mechanics, answer questions, and share what could only be characterized as an encyclopedic knowledge of airplanes. He apprenticed many who went onto to successful careers. In what were to be his last days he started to apprentice Andrew Green. Although still having the desire to teach, Ron was limited in these last months by his failing health that no matter how hard he battled he seemed to decline. On many days Andrew would spend time with his master, and instead of learning he would remain although Ron had fallen asleep long ago, for Andrew possesses a servant’s heart.

Ron fought valiantly in his last days. He told me: “Don’t give up on me. Just see where I will be in a month.” Daily he would continue to try and go out and work even for a short time. Coming back exhausted but happy. On Sunday, he passed in gentle repose, in his wheelchair, with his head dropped slightly on his chest, unsorted airplane parts on his workbench in his hanger that brought so many people into to his life. There can be no more fitting close, as chose to live and die on his own terms.

To those of us remain, we grieve the loss. And we ascribe labels to the relationship such as friend, mentor, teacher, husband. But this falls short of describing all the funny stories, the wonderful memories, and how he changed each of us, and how we in turn changed him.

I think his last words to us would be the following: Dream large. Persevere. Do not let yourself be defined by your circumstances. Laugh often, and always and if possible, with good friends. Smile when tears would be

easier. Love completely and say it often. And if you are blessed to have this day, live it completely.

He was the father of Kristin Cooper. Although estranged, he loved her completely, and it was the desire of his heart to reunite before his passing. Although it never happened, I know he wanted desperately to trade away past disappointments and bitterness for the peace that comes with being loved and accepted. His life’s greatest sorrow was not the loss of his legs but rather the loss of this relationship.

So, to answer the question, who was Ron Coooper, I would say he is someone who lived larger and more fully than anyone I have encountered in my life. Please forgive any inconsistencies in this account, as I have drawn from his words and the words of others gathered from our many years together. With gratitude his suffering is no more. He is now experiencing a sense of freedom and love together with God the father, author of this creation, and with his blessed son Jesus Christ our Savior. Soar high my love.

IN REGARD TO FLOWERS AND PLANTS: Although they are beautiful and tangible expressions of support, we ask that you consider sending a donation to Dawn Cooper, 4825 Hogback Road, Fowlerville, MI 48836. All donations will support the education of Andrew Green. Andrew’s apprenticeship is yet incomplete. The desire of the family is to help Andrew complete his license and be a living legacy for Ron. And to this end we will be gifting him many of his master’s well-worn tools. May he use them well and pass along the love and passion for aviation.

Visitation was held on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 5:00 -7:00pm and from 10:00am until the service time on Friday at noon. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Wayne E. Mack

Wayne E. Mack of Fowlerville, 85, passed away Feb. 1st, 2024. Wayne worked at Utilex until they closed their doors and he realized that carpentry was what he wanted to do. He worked with his brother-in-law Richard Tobin and had some

employees. His wife Ellen helped him with the books. His trim work on newer homes was what he was most fond of doing. He was very good with making wood furniture and he made Ellen beautiful cabinets for her collectibles. As he got older he discovered old cars and loved working on his 29 Plymouth, that his two sons bought for him. He could make almost anything out of junk! He used parts and pieces to create his dream car!

Wayne and Ellen went to car shows with many friends and loved to go antiquing. He created quite a collection of model cars, die-cast cars, whiskey bottle cars and he also liked to collect cassette tapes and records. He made neat shelves from wood for his collections.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 64 years (Jan 2024) Ellen Irene (Tobin) Mack, grandson Tyler Mack, his mother Sharon Goucher and grandson Brandon Mack with Jamie Rice and their son (Wayne’s great grandson) Onyx Mack and his mother Tina Dodson. Wayne also has brothers

and sisters, Ed Mack, Barry Mack, Cheryl Slon, Jim Mack and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Margie Mack and his two beloved sons David Wayne

Mack and Micheal James Mack. Also brother-in-law Richard Tobin and sister and brother-in-law DeEtte and William Wollet.

Cremation has taken place and no memorial will be held.

She is survived by her four sons: Billy, Mike, Bob and Tom and her siblings, many grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Services will be held in the spring.  Winter Bird Feeding 101: Follow these tips to keep birds safe

To survive Michigan’s frigid winter temperatures, some birds store food from feeders to eat later in winter, while others expand their food sources and change their diets. Despite these incredible adaptations, winter can still be a stressful time for birds. We can help support winter birds by feeding them when other food sources may be scarce. Here are a couple of tips on how to feed them safely and responsibly in your space:

  • Keep your bird feeders and birdbaths fresh and clean throughout winter. Freshen the water every other day, if possible. Clean your feeders once every one to two weeks in a 9:1 solution that is nine parts water and one part bleach, scrubbing away any debris. Dry the feeder before refilling. Clean bird baths with a scrub brush in a 9:1 solution of water and vinegar.
  •  Don’t place seed directly on the ground or use platform feeders, which tend to attract larger numbers of birds, deer and other unwanted guests. Mess-free birdseed options can help keep the ground clean.

These tips are important year-round, but especially now as the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus is still circulating among wild birds in Michigan. While most HPAI cases have been found in waterfowl and scavenging birds (e.g., eagles, hawks and owls), the DNR is continuing surveillance efforts and will test wild birds from die-offs that include six or more birds. You can help by reporting sick or dead birds through the DNR’s Eyes in the Field app.

George also enjoyed playing cards with his brother Gordon, his Uncle Fred, his Aunt Lois (and other friends from time to time) and won many games at the card table. George was the life of every party, was very witty and had a good sense of humor.

He spent much time at the baseball field watching his son, daughter, nephews and grandson play ball. George loved sweets, especially his granddaughter’s cupcakes and cinnamon rolls. After he retired, George enjoyed spending most of the summer months at their cottage on the lake with his wife, Rose. Driving the pontoon & fishing made him very happy.
