Livingston County Genealogical Society to meet Dec. 7th via zoom
The Livingston County Genealogical Society will meet via zoom on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. - Patricia Yokum - "Polish Immigrants and the Ellis Island Database."
Patricia B. Yokum is a librarian emerita at the University of Michigan. A native of New York, she earned a B.A. from Binghamton University, and a M.A. and A.M.L.S. from the University of Michigan. Her interest in family history dates from her childhood, fostered by stories of her grandparents immigration from Poland.
Between 1870 and 1914, well over two million Poles came to America and settled largely in the northern states where work and land were plentiful. Most Poles came through Ellis Island, but finding them in the Ellis Island database can be difficult. Language, history and record handling are all factors which can thwart our searches. In this talk we'll take a look at how these factors function, how they can cause information to be hidden and, most importantly, how we can work around such snags to find the immigrants we're researching. Strategies in the talk will be of help in researching other ethnic groups in this database as well.
(This speaker had been scheduled for the October meeting but cancelled due to an illness.)
