 David Floyd Nelson

David Floyd Nelson, age 86, of Fowlerville, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2023. He was surrounded by his family and his loving friend Irene Goforth. David was born on July 18, 1937 to Floyd and Sylvia Nelson, whom preceded him in death, along with his wife, Bonnie, and brother Charles (Chuck).

David married Bonnie Klender on October 27,1956, in Howell, MI, where they lived for many happy years before moving to Fowlerville. They were married for 48 years before she passed away.

David spent his younger years tinkering around his pole barn, working on his many projects. He enjoyed using his talent to design and engineer his ideas to make his tractor and lawnmowers work better. David was able to use that talent for his job in maintenance at the businesses he worked for until his retirement.

He and Bonnie owned a cabin in Leota that gave them many years of pleasure and created special memories for their children and grandchildren.

In later years, he discovered he liked to bake pies and share them with his children. He became known for his excellent pot roast, as well.

David and his friend, Irene were able to spend his last 17 years together enjoying holidays with both families, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and traveling in his motorhome with their beloved dog, Bella. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He made many trips on his golf cart to visit his boys at Nelson’s Collision. He was a funny guy who loved to make people laugh, but don’t get him started on politics. He took pride in his home and loved keeping his property beautiful.

David is survived by his four children, Rick (Lisa) Nelson, Kim (Nick) Converse, Scott (Kim) Nelson, all of Fowlerville and Todd (Diane) Nelson of Perry. He has 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Herrmann Funeral Home, 1005 E. Grand River, Fowlerville, on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 from 10:00 – 12:00, with a service from 12:00 – 1:00. Luncheon to follow at the Recreation Hall behind St. Agnes Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Humane Society or charity of your choice.

Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

 Ruth Ann Douglas Rice

March 15, 1942 – July 21, 2023

Ruth Ann Rice, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend passed away July 21, 2023 surrounded by her family.

She was born to Clarence and Frances Douglas on March 15, 1942 and graduated from Webberville High School in 1961 as valedictorian of her class. She married the love of her life, Kenneth, on June 20, 1964 and spent the next 59 years as the rock of her family.

Prior to her marriage, Ruth Ann attended Lansing Business College and worked for the State of Michigan. After her daughters, Tammy and Kelly, both started school, Ruth Ann started volunteering at Webberville Schools. That volunteer work turned into employment and she finally retired from Webberville Schools in 2004 after 32 years of service.

It was no secret that Ruth Ann loved her family and loved cooking for her family. Her kitchen was the source of many, many home-cooked meals for anyone and everyone. The grandkid’s favorites were french toast, homemade pizza and Christmas Eve smorgasbord.

Ruth Ann and Ken spent a lot of time camping, especially after they both retired and became seasonal campers in Harrison. Many happy family memories were made camping at state parks all over Michigan as Tammy and Kelly were growing up. Although Ruth Ann didn’t care for water, she was a good sport about canoe trips and being designated as the best “spotter” for those water skiing.

Ruth Ann became passionate about card making and spent a lot of time happily making cards for every occasion. She was also known to volunteer to make cards for others to give away or make bundles of cards to give away for silent auctions.

Ruth Ann is survived by her husband, Kenneth; her two daughters Tammy (Steve) Grossbauer, Kelly (Mark) Zemla; 11 grandchildren – Steven Grossbauer, John Grossbauer, Justin Pierce, Jennifer Brooke, Joe Pierce, Nolan Grossbauer, William Zemla, Emma Grossbauer, Madison Zemla, Logan Pierce and Brady Pierce; 4 great grandchildren – Jaxon Mahon, Ben Mahon, Anderson Pierce and Sophia Zemla; and her brother, Walter Douglas. She was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Frances Douglas, her sister Marian Allen and her brothers Michael and David Douglas.

A visitation for Ruth was held Wednesday, July 26, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 East Middle Street, Williamston. A memorial service occurred Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 11:00 AM with a visitation one hour prior at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes in Williamston. Donations in Ruth Ann’s memory can be made to Webberville Music Program c/o Webberville Community Schools.

The 137th Annual Fowlerville Family Fair will be running from Monday thru Saturday, July 24-29.

The theme this year is “Where Stars, Stripes and Fair Delights,” reflecting this part of American tradition that dates back to the mid-1800s in Michigan. It’s an annual event that includes the excitement of the midway and the evening Grandstand shows as well as the animal exhibits and the arts-and-crafts projects.

The upcoming schedule includes the carnival rides and games-of-chance, put on by Skerbeck Entertainment Group, livestock judging, harness racing, demolition derbies, a rodeo, horse pulling, a spelling bee, combat wrestling, and a country music concert.

There’ll be Kids Day activities, commercial displays, and a variety of food, snacks, and refreshments. The Youth Still Life exhibits can be viewed at the 4-H Building and an adjacent building, while the livestock entries are located in the various barns in the back of the grounds.

A new Fair Queen and Homemaker of the Year will be crowned, and a Citizen of the Year announced.

There’ll be a wood carver creating unique sculptures each day, a put put golf course set up near the Finlan Gazebo, and the Farm to Fair exhibit providing informational diplays and activities in the dairy barn. The fair is also bringing back the Butterfly Tent which will be located in the front of the grounds.

Finally, the Livingston Centre Historical Village will have several of its buildings open for visitors to stop in and learn more about the area’s past.

She was acknowledged as one of the top appraisers in the area. Lauren loved her work and the people she met along the way and took great pride in maintaning excellence. She enjoyed “talking sports” and could hold her own on any topic especially if it involved basketball and softball. Her childhood love of softball developed into a passion which resulted in her coaching a woman’s softball team for several years. A highlight and passion of her lifetime.

Lauren shared her parent’s love of gardening and became a Master Gardener. She thrived on watching her garden blossom and could identify every bird that visited. Red Cardinals lit up her face in “a smile that wouldn’t quit.”

Later in life, Lauren began a quest for a depper meaning in her life, studying with a variety of teachers searching for her own “AH HA” moments. She loved getting away from the day-to-day and traveling with her mom, sisters and like-minded people. Getting out of her comfort zone to embark on new experiences was a challenge she overcame.

Some of her favorite experiences included: being in the presence of the Dali Lama, meditating in the Great Pyramid in Egypt, whale watching and snorkeling in Hawaii, walking the green hills in West Virginia when visiting her Grandmother, FIREWALKING, dancing until her feet ached while cruising on a paddleboat down the Nile River, and a hair-raising hot air ballon ride over the red rocks in Sedona.

Beloved by family, friends and colleagues, Lauren will be remembered for her quick wit and natural wisdom, inspiration and affection for animals and her personal dedication and integrity. She has left an indelible mark on the many lives she touched.

The family would like to thank the countless healers, spiritual groups, caretakers, and friends who sent prayers, energy and love to Lauren durng her last two years as she withdrew into her body cut off from the outside world as she coped with Parkinson’s desease.

VETLIFE returns to Fowlerville Fairgrounds with Vet Fest August 12th

Back for its sixth year, VETLIFE is once again hosting Vet Fest on Saturday, August 12, from 11 AM – 3 PM at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds.

Organizers noted that this is the largest veteran event in the state of Michigan. Vet Fest has drawn in over 3,000 veterans annually along with their immediate family members.

The purpose of Vet Fest is to bring veterans together to enjoy camaraderie and connect them to the military benefits they earned through their service.

VETLIFE co-founder Joshua Parish noted that “Michigan is home to almost 600,000 veterans, but less than 18% have been connected to a federal benefit. VETLIFE is doing something no other organization has successfully been able to do and that is connect veterans to their benefits at a very large scale.”

VETLIFE co-founder Cortnie Parish added that “There are so many veterans throughout this country that do not even know what benefits are out there. Many do not know where to start which is why at VETLIFE we make it our mission to connect these veterans to vetted resources and help answer all their questions. Unlike other veteran events we invite the veteran’s family to join them and provide everything free of charge for families. We do not allow vendors to sell and require that each exhibitor provide a direct service to veterans.”

Vet Fest is completely free for all active duty, retired, or military veteran families. Registration is required and attendees will be asked to show their military designated ID at check in. Vet Fest is family oriented and veteran’s family members can enjoy food trucks, bounce houses, live bands, backpack and school supply giveaways, celebrity appearances, and more. Veterans will enjoy a day of camaraderie and learn about a wide variety of veteran specific resources from over 60 different resource providers.

All veterans in attendance will also be entered into drawings to win a wide variety of prizes valued from $300 to $2,000.

One spouse of a veteran that attended a previous years Vet Fest hosted by VETLIFE said, “I think you saved my husband’s life. He’s an Army veteran and today is the first time he’s been out of the house in three months. We enrolled him in VA healthcare services with the Ann Arbor VA today. Thank you so much.”

VETLIFE will have providers onsite to enroll veterans in healthcare, sign up for county VA services, retrieve a copy of their DD-214, learn about education benefits, alternative forms of therapy, and much more.

 Who was Charlie Gehringer?

New library display answers that question

By Marion Cornett

Many can answer that in a heartbeat, while others might merely shake their heads.

The quick and easiest answer is he was a Detroit Tigers baseball player, coming out of the village of Fowlerville in the early 1900s. But there is so much more about him.

A few quick facts:

~~His love for baseball started in Fowlerville and he playedfor the high school. He was known as “The Fowlerville Flash.”

~~The Detroit Tigers picked him up in 1924 and he played through 1942.

~~He was then nicknamed the “Mechanical Man.”

~~At 5’11, 200 lbs, he batted left and threw with his right arm.

~~His career spanned 2,839 hits, surpassing .300 13 times throughout his career.

~~He won the American League Most Valuable Player award in 1937.

~~The Baseball Hall of Fame recognized his accomplishments and inducted him in 1949.

~~Clayton Klein wrote, “A Well-Kept Secret,” a recounting of letters between his wife of 61 years, Marjorie, and Hank Greenberg, another Detroit player and friend to Charlie. Charlie Gehringer’s biography is included in this book.

The Fowlerville District Library now houses many pictures and some memorabilia, including a commemorative bat given to Mr. Gehringer in 1993. Come visit the library and peruse this collection. Or, check out “A Well-Kept Secret” or Mike Grimm’s “Mastodons to Manufacturers: A History of Fowlerville, Michigan.”

If you’re like me, it is always fun to learn more about the history where you live. See how Charlie Gehringer put this village on the map for a lot of Michiganders.

Fowlerville 1st United Methodist Church holding Vacation Bible School

The Fowlerville 1st United Methodist Church is holding its Vacation Bible School on July 10-13 from 5:30-7:45pm.

This year we are doing SonRock Kids Camp. Quite possibly the most memorable times in a kid’s life is when he or she gets a week at summer camp. Bring on the memories; roll out the fun. Here’s a laughing, splashing, hiking, climbing program designed for discovery, dedication, and devotion to The Rock, Jesus Christ.

SonRock Kids Camp takes a wilderness camp concept, and places it in a fun VBS program. As they participate in fun-filled activities, children will learn how each one of them is loved by Jesus! We will have a great time with lively songs, creative crafts, exciting games and Bible stories—all of the things that make Vacation Bible School so much fun for children!

Each day we’ll start with a simple dinner at 5:30pm with the program beginning at 6pm. We will be collecting Laundry Soap for the Family Impact Center as our mission project. If the kids can fill the tent they’ll be able to plan a surprise for Pastor Scott.

Fowlerville 1st UMC is located at 201 S Second St, Fowlerville, church office 517-223-8824. All are invited ages three-year-olds to fifth grade. Older siblings are invited to come to help and earn community service credit hours.
