Euchre returns to the Williamston Eagles Club on Friday, Oct. 18th. Come down and show us your mad Euchre skills! Registration is 6-6:30 and play begins at 7pm. Cost is $10 per player and you need not bring a partner! First, second and third place winners along with the set cups and booby prize for low score! We draw for partners and change every game.  VINA holding annual UM vs MSU Tailgate fundraiser on       Oct. 24th

VINA Community Dental Center is excited to announce the return of the much-anticipated annual VINA Tailgate fundraiser. Join us on Oct. 24, at 5:30 PM at the Crystal Gardens Event Center in Howell for another unforgettable evening of friendly rivalry, fun, and a common goal of raising funds to support the invaluable services provided by VINA.

Every year, the VINA Tailgate brings together fans of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University just before their heated rivalry on the football field. This year, we are excited to have Ashley Dewling representing Team MSU and Dr. Norman Betts leading Team UM as our tailgate captains. Fans compete to see which fanbase will raise more money to support VINA’s mission of providing essential care to those in need. The Tailgate’s 16th year will continue this tradition of friendly competition while making a significant impact in Livingston County. Since the Tailgate began, Spartan fans have won nine times while Wolverines have won six.

Over the years, the VINA Tailgate has raised a significant amount of funding, enabling VINA to provide essential services to thousands of underserved patients, including free care for veterans. The event has become a symbol of unity, where both universities' fan bases come together to demonstrate their support for the Livingston County community.

As part of the Tailgate festivities, attendees can participate in a silent auction, friendly competitions, various games and raffles, and enjoy a buffet dinner, along with a cash bar, dancing, entertainment, and more! With all proceeds directly benefiting VINA's programs, every dollar raised will make a positive impact in the lives of those in need right here in Livingston County.

Tickets are $50 per person and sponsorships are available now. Fans can purchase tickets and sponsorships at The Tailgate website or at VINA.

 Oak Grove United Methodist Church holding Swiss Steak Dinner & Bake Sale

A Swiss Steak Dinner and Bake Sale is being held on Saturday, Oct. 19, 4:30-6:00 p.m. at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 6686 Oak Grove Road, Howell (5 miles north of M-59). Join us for a homemade Swiss Steak meal served with mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, coleslaw, rolls & pies. No reservation necessary. A free-will donation at the door.  Howell Township having Fall Recycle Event on Oct. 12th

Howell Township is having a Fall Recycle Event on Saturday, October 12, from noon to 3 p.m. This is a service to Howell Township residents only. The event will be held at the Howell Township Hall, located at 3525 Byron Road... On site paper and electronic shredding will be available along with a compost truck for yard waste and small branches.

The Big Red Barrel Project will be accepting medication and needles. Please go to the Howell Township website (www.howelltownshipmi.org) for additional information regarding the Big Red Barrel Project and a listing of acceptable/nonacceptable items for paper and electronic shredding. Great Pumpkin Classic Car Show being held at Livingston County Airport

The 2024 ARMOR Great Pumpkin Classic Car Show is being held on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Livingston County Airport. Over the past 17 years, this classic car show has grown in size, participation and reputation; from the first show held in 2007 with 40 cars, to recent years where nearly 600 cars attended! To date, this annual event has raised over $208,125 for the Salvation Army of Livingston County.

Howell Area Fire Dept. hosting annual Open House at all stations on Oct. 13th

The Howell Area Fire Dept will be opening all their stations for this year’s Open House on Sunday, Oct 13th, from 1 to 4pm. Instead of just coming to the Main Station, please come check out all the other facilities, equipment and chat with your firefighters.  Lydia Marie Ruttman

Lydia Marie (Bowers) Ruttman passed away on September 24th, 2024, just thirty-seven days shy of her 100th birthday. She was born on October 31st, 1924, to Dorr and Louise Bowers in Pontiac, Michigan. She graduated from Howell High School in 1942 and began working for a car dealership as a bookkeeper. Around this time, Lydia joined the Livingston County Junior Farm Bureau. as secretary, and she began working closely with the club’s president, Robert “Bob” Ruttman. After a nice courtship, the couple wed on June 1st, 1946, and settled down on Bob’s family dairy farm on South Gregory road in Iosco Township. In 1950, the couple welcomed a daughter, Lucinda, followed by Rebecca in 1952 and then son, Mark, in 1955.

Lydia was a member of the Greene Church, followed by Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a part of Fellowship, was a UMYF leader and volunteered for several committees and organizations within the church. She was a member of the Friendly Neighbors Circle of the International Order of The King's Daughters & Sons and held many offices at the local and state level. Lydia was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars and had recently received her 75th Anniversary pin. She was also a member of the Lucky Eleven Club, the neighborhood social group.

In 1974, Bob and Lydia sold their share of the family farm and joined the Peace Corps. They traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal, where they were stationed for two years. During their time overseas, the couple made numerous friends from all over the world who are still considered “almost family” to this day. Lydia always remembered her time in the Peace Corps fondly and talked about it often.

In 1985, the couple retired to Lewiston, Mi, where Lydia was very active in her community church, Eastern Stars of Atlanta, Lewiston Farm & Garden Club and many others. In 2015, the couple moved back to Fowlerville to be closer to family. Lydia loved cleaning, gardening, hunting, playing card games, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, watching the Michigan State Spartans and spending time with her family and friends.

Lydia is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Fred) Krebs of Fowlerville; son, Mark (Kate) Ruttman of Newago; and “adopted” daughter, Kathy (Dennis) Graves of Eaton Rapids. Eleven grandchildren: Dianne Dvorak, Jodi Graves, Peter Browning, Shawn Davenport, John Ruttman, Elizabeth McVicker, Nancy Krebs, Robert Browning, Rick Krebs, Mary Chapin, and Martha Bakker, twenty-six great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, and close friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and her daughter Becky (Harold) Browning.

Visitation will be held at Hermann Funeral Home on October 10th from 9am-noon, with the funeral immediately following. Burial will take place in Munsell Cemetery. Memorials can be sent to the Heart To Heart Foundation (Hospice) or to the Fowlerville District Library.

 Karen Elaine Jackman

Karen Elaine Jackman, 81, of Howell, MI, passed away peacefully on September 30 due to illness. She was the third of four children born on January 23, 1943, to Lawrence and Eunice Lucas. Karen obtained her Bachelor of Education from Olivet Nazarene University and later earned her Master of Education from Michigan State University. She was the beloved and inspiring principal at K-12 Farmington Hills Christian School from September 1973 through May 1977. She was also a thriving and dearly loved teacher in the Lansing Public Schools until retiring from her final post at Kendon Elementary School.

She was actively involved in schools and surrounding churches as a ventriloquist and puppeteer, a passion that led to a long resume of Vacation Bible Schools she organized across the Midwest with a group she dubbed the Kid's Crusaders. Her legacy in education and ministry has brought lasting joy to countless lives, too numerous to list.

At home, she took on the role of matriarch with dedication and zeal after her siblings' deaths. She organized reunions to bring together cousins and distant relatives every year and always had something special planned for the holidays with close family. She was the kind of person who found more joy in seeing others happy than herself, which was evident when she would take her nieces and nephews on adventures like horseback riding, sledding, four-wheeling, and even motorcycle rides. One thing everyone could count on aside from her sense of adventure was her infamous pranks, a sneaky occasion discovered every year.

She was the proud aunt to Susan Keller, Kathleen (Keller) Blair, Wendy (Keller) Ford, Karen Ann (Keller) Piggott, Heath Krumlauf, Aaron Krumlauf, Tim Lucas, Jeremy Lucas, and Melody (Lucas) DeCoe. She was also a proud great-aunt to Jonathan, Elysha, Amy, Michaela, Natalie, Emily, Isabella, Kellan, Jackson, Edwin, Ethan, Grant, Luke, Joshua, Chloe, Owen, Brody, Elle, Ana, and Ava. Additionally, she held the title of great-great-aunt to eight more nieces and nephews.

Karen Jackman was rooted in the firm foundation of her Savior, Jesus Christ, which she credited for her fun-loving approach to life. She exemplified to her family, friends, and colleagues what it means to live life on the edge, embrace adventure, and bring joy to those around her. She will be greatly missed.

Please join us at the visitation which was being held on Saturday, October 5th at 1:00 and the celebration of her life will follow at 3:00 at Fowlerville Baptist Church, 214 S. Grand Ave, Fowlerville, MI 48336.
