John E. Matthews

November 6, 1931-December 25, 2019

     John (Jack) E. Matthews, age 88 of Perry, Michigan, passed away on December 25, 2019.  He was born on November 6, 1931 in Petoskey, Michigan to Cecile and Eva Matthews. 
    Jack was a die-hard Spartan fan although watching any football game was a favorite pastime.  He also loved gardening and would often share his fruits and vegetables with friends and neighbors. Jack was a Veteran of the Korean War. As a young man Jack worked as a farmer, then later as an Insurance Agent for New York Life Insurance Co. for over 50 years. He had interests in the saddle and tack industry, property development and golf course ownership.
     Jack will be forever missed by his wife: Cheryl; sons and their spouses: Mark and Amy Matthews of Grand Haven, Steve and Julie Matthews of Petoskey, James Matthews of East Jordan; one sister, Ruth Hoffman of Petoskey; two step-children and their spouses: Stacey and Joe Karsnick, Andrew and Lisa Crowell; step-son-in-law: Rodney Page. 10 grandchildren: Taylor and Karl Schulz, John (Jack) Matthews, Scott, Lucas, Eva, Chase and Kim Matthews, Chelsea and Cameron Collar; and several step-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Morrow; sister, Helen Locke; and brother, Bruce Morrow and one step-daughter, Kelly Page. Webberville United Methodist Church having Chicken Dinner on Jan. 18
    The Webberville United Methodist Church is having its monthly chicken dinner on Saturday, Jan. 18, with oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, vegetables and biscuits. The meal will include coffee, lemonade, and dessert. The dinner will be served 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $9 per adult, $4 for children 12 and under; pre-schoolers eat free. The church is located on the corner of Holt Road and M-52.

Livingston Seventh-day Adventist Church offering Bible Study
    The Livingston Seventh-day Adventist Church extends an invitation to everyone interested in a class focusing on Daniel and Revelation. These two books, from the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, are often studied together as their prophecies dovetail each other. Come to learn the why and how.
     It is never too late to attend. The study sessions begin at 7:00 PM and will be held on Tuesday evening. The upcoming  session is this Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Knights of Columbus hosting Chili Cook-off at St. Agnes on Jan. 18
    Calling All Chili Cooks!
    The Knights of Columbus Council 8605 is hosting their 13th annual Warm UP the Winter Chili Cook-off. The event will be Saturday, Jan. 18, at St. Agnes Church in Fowlerville. Crossroads United Methodist Church holding Tai Chi/Qigong class
    Do something special for yourself in the new year.  Reduce stress, improve balance, gain strength and flexibility through a Tai Chi/Qigong class, starting Thursday, January 9, at Crossroads United Methodist Church.
    All ages and genders are welcome in the class, which will run from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Thursdays for eight weeks at the church, corner of Haslett and Zimmer roads east of Haslett and north of Williamston.
    Attire is comfortable clothing and shoes, with no special equipment.  People will be welcome to sit for any period of time as the class is adaptable and modifiable.  Those who register for the first time are strongly urged to attend at least the first two sessions to obtain a good overview of the instructions and goals.  
    Instructor will be Jann Nestell of Williamston, a physical therapist for 40 years and an Applied Medical Qigong Healing Practitioner also certified in Tai Chi for arthritis and diabetes.  Ms. Nestell taught at the Parkwood YMCA in Haslett and currently teaches privately and with the Playmakers Women’s 5k training group.

Acoustic Café to feature Annie & Rod Capps at Friday, Jan. 10 concert
   Acoustic Café is an annual music series held at the historic Howell Opera House that features outstanding Michigan performers, now celebrating its 12th year. 
   This year’s series continues on Friday, Jan. 10, with the Midwest urban folk music stylings of Annie & Rod Capps. Over the years, Annie and Rod have done it all; from rock to musical theater and while they continue to draw from a wide range of genres and influences, what comes out is a hybrid sound all their own. 
    Annie’s disarming, earthy voice and solid command of her guitar are punctuated by Rod’s effortless, accompaniment and beautiful solo work. Together they weave unforgettable melodies that are at once intricate and sparse – musically completing each other’s sentences.
    Doors will open at 7:00 pm and the show will begin at 7:30 pm. Open to the public, the cost is $12.00 at the door, $10.00 for Livingston Arts Council members.
