Snowmobile season is near—are you ready?

While we don’t yet know what winter has in store, state-designated snowmobile trails are open Dec. 1 to March 31, and trail grooming occurs when there is enough snow on the ground. Now is a good time to prep for the season (think snow!), starting with purchasing your snowmobile trail permit. Michigan is home to 6,000-plus miles of DNR-designated snowmobile trails, public roads and public lands (only where riding is authorized). Did you know that nearly 1,900 private landowners allow use of their land to create the trails network? Their generosity allows the DNR to offer trails that connect communities and bring snowmobilers to special places of interest that otherwise wouldn’t be available to them. “We’re incredibly grateful to these property owners and their partnerships with their local snowmobile clubs,” said Jessical Roehrs, statewide motorized trails analyst for the DNR Parks and Recreation Division. “It’s important for all of us to give thanks to these landowners and to remember to be respectful of the land, wherever we ride.”

Here is ride-related info to keep in mind:

    · Always Ride Right: Ride sober, ride at safe speeds and ride on            the right side of the trail. Get more tips at                                              Michigan.gov/RideRight.

    · Your $52 snowmobile trail permit is valid for one year, which            begins Oct. 1 and ends Sept. 30 of the following year. Buy                  permits online through eLicense (your sticker will be mailed                within seven to 10 days) or the Michigan Snowmobile ORV                Association (which processes permit orders daily Monday                  through Friday) and in person at DNR license agents and                   dealers.

    · Residents must also register snowmobiles with the Michigan              Secretary of State (unless sleds are used solely on private                    property). Registration is good for three years, and those                      registration dollars support the purchase of easements, law                  enforcement on trails and safety education.

    · The snowmobile program is 100% funded by trail permit and              registration dollars that are directly reinvested into the program          to benefit snowmobilers. The funds pay for grooming, signage,          maintenance, bridge and culvert construction, purchase of new            equipment, liability insurance, maintenance of trailhead                      amenities (signage, bathrooms, plowing of parking lots) and                other snowmobile-related expenditures.

    · Remember that some snowmobile trails may not be open Dec. 1        due to trail conditions or other factors such as in-progress                    maintenance projects. Know before you go by checking the                DNR’s closures webpage

 John Holden

Ann Arbor, MI

John Edward Holden, 79, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024. He was born on September 1, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan to Ellis Holden and Eleanor “Betty” (Snyder) Holden.

In 1970, John met and married his beloved wife, Shari Crawford. They were married for 31 wonderful years. John was very proud of his family, which included his children Scott and Kelly. As a family, they loved being in the outdoors: camping, smelt fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling, ice skating and boating. They built lifelong friendships in their neighborhood and often hosted parties that included hayrides, corn roasts and a 50’s theme. John and Shari were avid golfers, loved traveling and spending time with extended family. John adored the moments he spent with his siblings and their families. Their time together was always filled with laughter, creating many lasting memories.

He and Shari founded SKS Industries in 1979, an anti-corrosion packaging company based in Howell, Michigan. John named it after his family: Shari, Kelly and Scott (but, if you ask Scott, SKS actually stood for: Scott, Kelly and Shari). SKS later became ARMOR Protective Packaging and John worked at the helm for over 20 years. He had a strong work ethic, and was a generous and fun employer. He was known by so many for his big smile, infectious humor and positive attitude.

In the early 2000s, John and Shari poured their hearts into building their dream log home on Strawberry Lake. Tragically, Shari passed away soon after its completion. Although cut short, their family had a beautiful life together filled with great love, laughter & adventure.

John was a thrill seeker; he enjoyed piloting his Glassair III (a hotrod in the sky), hang gliding over the dunes of Lake Michigan, and scuba diving in the Caribbean. He liked riding roller coasters, dancing to 60s music, and old cars. Later in life, he even traveled solo to Mexico to learn Spanish while living with a host family. For many years, he enjoyed living on the Huron River chain of lakes, hosting epic parties at his big log home or on his boat. With a quick wit and zany sense of humor, he never hesitated to throw on a funny wig or ridiculous costume to make everyone laugh.

John had a loving and generous heart—he devoted over 20 years to volunteering with the Hospice of Livingston County. He enjoyed being a member of Huron River Methodist Church, where he was a Stephen Minister and sang in the choir. He was particularly close to the members of his church small group with whom he met weekly.

In 2008, John met his cherished wife, Karen Paulsen. After a proposal under the Eiffel Tower in 2009, they were married the following year, at home, on Strawberry Lake. That same year, John and Karen opened Sunset Cove Bed and Breakfast which would go on to host many joyful weddings and events for guests from all over the world. They enjoyed dancing, tending their sweeping gardens, and traveling until John suffered a devastating spinal cord injury while vacationing in Hawaii in 2012. Despite his new limitations, John continued to see the joy in every day and became an inspiration to countless people. Not least of which, his “bonus” children: Cat, Jenny, Colby and Simon. John and Karen became snowbirds in 2015 and loved spending their winters in Punta Gorda, Florida.

LACASA hosts annual Starry Night Toy Drive to bring joy to children in need

LACASA, a nonprofit dedicated to providing hope and healing for victims of interpersonal violence, is hosting its annual Starry Night Toy Drive to help make the holidays brighter for local children in need. The toy drive runs now through Dec. 8, giving individuals and businesses an opportunity to donate new, unwrapped toys and gift cards for to children and teens at LACASA Center.

The toys collected through the drive will ensure every child and teen in LACASA’s programs receives a gift this holiday season. LACASA clients are victims and survivors of child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual violence. Donated toys and gift cards are provided for youth who are living in LACASA’s Crisis Shelter and LACASA’s Transitional Supportive Housing units, as well as those receiving services at LACASA’s Children’s Advocacy Center or LACASA counseling progams.

“Our Starry Night Toy Drive is a way to bring joy and light into the lives of children who need it most,” said LACASA President and CEO Bobette Schrandt. “With the support of our generous community, we can make this holiday season brighter for families facing difficult situations and ensure that children at LACASA feel the warmth and care of those around them.”

The items LACASA children and teens need most this holiday season include:

-- Arts supplies (coloring & drawing books, colored pencils &               pens)

    --Puzzle books

    --Self-care supplies

    --Infant/toddler toys & books

    --Board games & card games

    --Movies & books

--Gift cards for pre-teens & teens

(Visa/MasterCard/department store cards)

Donations can be dropped off at the LACASA Collection charity resale boutique, which is located at Tanger Outlets Howell, 1475 N. Burkhart Road, Suite A140. LACASA Collection is open 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday – Saturday, and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday. In addition to toys, LACASA also accepts monetary donations to support its year-round programs, including the Crisis Shelter, forensic interviews, and individual and group counseling.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of our community partners and individual donors who make our work, and this drive, possible year after year,” added Schrandt. “Their generosity ensures that even in the most challenging times, children in our community feel loved and supported.”

Gov. Whitmer proclaims November as ‘Michigan Craft Beverage’ Month

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed November as ‘Michigan Craft Beverage’ Month, encouraging Michiganders to support world-class, locally produced wine, beer, cider, and spirits throughout the holiday season.

“Michigan’s multi-billion-dollar craft beverage industry supports thousands of good-paying jobs and strengthens local communities across the state,” said Governor Whitmer. “During Michigan Craft Beverage Month, I encourage Michiganders to join us in saying ‘Cheers’ to the excellent products we make right here at home. Let’s keep working together to support this iconic industry and grow our economy.”

Michigan Craft Beverage Month also recognizes the role of craft beverage businesses in making Michigan a great place to live and work. These businesses are impactful to community placemaking, economic development, and agritourism. With most Michigan counties hosting at least one craft beverage business, these companies reflect the regionality and vibrancy of the state’s rural and urban landscapes.

Farming and agriculture are at the heart of the state’s thriving craft beverage sector. Michigan’s climate is well-suited for producing excellent wine grapes, abundant cider apples, aromatic hops, and complex grains for brewing and distilling.

“When we choose locally made products during Craft Beverage Month and throughout the year, we are often supporting Michigan’s farms, which is where the flavor starts,” said Tim Boring, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director and Chair of the Michigan Craft Beverage Council. “Michigan’s craft beverage industry continues to grow and is an essential part of our local economies.”

“The holiday season is a great time to support Michigan-made,” said Jenelle Jagmin, Michigan Craft Beverage Council Executive Director. “Whether you’re hosting or attending an event, a locally produced bottle pairs perfectly with festive meals. After all, Michigan is known for crisp, cool-climate wines, well-balanced hard ciders, iconic beers, and well-crafted spirits.”
