 Maggie Mateer

March 9, 1951 – December 5, 2023

Maggie Mateer of Fowlerville sadly passed away on Dec 5. 2023 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Remembering a Beautiful Precious Life, Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Friend

Born in Glasgow, Scotland March 9, 1951 Maggie came to the United States on October 9, 1951 where she would become a naturalized citizen soon afterwards. She soon moved in Garden City, Michigan where she was raised to young adulthood by her parents Hugh and Edith Mateer. Maggie graduated from Garden City East Senior High School in 1969 where she made some very precious lifelong friends.

Maggie married and gave birth to two beautiful daughters, Michelle and Jennifer. And as such things go, Maggie started employment at Wayne County R.E.S.A. and soon found herself, as a single young mother raising and guiding her daughters to young adulthood herself. After guiding and helping them through college, Michelle became a teacher and Jennifer became an Occupational Therapist. They each married and blessed Maggie with four precious grandchildren: Spencer, Jenna, Sarah and Ava that she loved and cherished until the day of her passing.

Maggie retired from Wayne County R.E.S.A. in 2017 after 40 years. She loved her job and made many very close friends while she worked there. Known for her conscientious work style and exuberant attitude, Maggie became loved by all and valued by her coworkers and supervisors. Always willing to pitch in and help wherever needed, and always with a smile. This did not mean that Maggie was all business either. With a quick wit and a fabulous sense of humor, she was able to play a few jokes on people as years went by and could be the victim of a joke as well while laughing about it at the same time. In her post retirement years, Maggie organized the meetings of a retirement group that tried to meet monthly for luncheons.

In the late 1990’s Dale Brown came back into Maggie’s life and a bond that had been broken decades before was remade and made whole for both of them. Maggie welcomed Dale into her life with open arms and an open heart. Dale brought into her life two young adult children as well, Dustin and Alicia, which she welcomed with open arms and loved them as hers also. They each married and started young families of their own. Again, Maggie was blessed with five more precious grandchildren: Olivia, Emma, Morgan, Liam and Charlotte that she loved and cherished until the day of her passing.

Maggie and Dale bought a piece of land on Lady Jane Lake with the dream of building their retirement home and on June 5, 2004 they were married in Livonia, Michigan. They completed their home on the lake and moved there permanently in 2012. As being born in Glasgow and raised in Garden City, Maggie did not know much about country life. But, as with anything Maggie welcomed and embraced such a change in her life. She found the folks in and around Fowlerville to be kind and friendly. Maggie loved the Fowlerville Fair, of course the Christmas in the Ville parade and festivities, and the Ladies Night Out. She became a member of the Fowlerville Garden Club and enjoyed their activities as well.

Her life of living in the country brought forth a blossoming in her that was wonderful to see. She was amazed by the animals, trees, birds, the sounds, feels and smells. Living this close to nature changed her life, she embraced all of it, even when the weather got harsh or the deer ate her hostas. She believed everything had a place in this world and she respected all of it. She enjoyed gardening around her home and enjoyed the springtime when the world awoke around her with the flowers and trees. Calla Lillies that rebloomed every year were her favorite. Also, watching the birds and deer outside our home’s windows year round thoroughly amazed her. She found grace and peace in the new outside world around her. Maggie absolutely loved it. And she would dance without any music, only the sounds and feeling of this life around her in her mind.

Maggie’s devotion to Dale and their marriage was without fail. She accepted everything that came along with courage and dignity. She welcomed each day with a smile and ended each day with a kiss. Maggie simply enjoyed making everyone comfortable, always with a kind word or with a listening heart. Always with the ability to feel someone else’s troubles she would offer comfort, sound advice and rational thought. These abilities were apparent and other people in her life eventually learned from her kind and generous nature.

Maggie took great pleasure in making her home warm and comfortable for anyone who came. She made sure that everyone had plenty of food or drink. Everyone got a hug when they arrived and a hug when they left.

Maggie also had an ability to be welcomed by animals, they seemed to not fear her. They seemed to have met a kindred spirit and so as the years went by she had many pets. Of her most beloved were her two Chows—Taz and Taboo, and her two beautiful cats—Lucky and Joe who crossed over this past year.

Maggie will be remembered for her beautiful spirit, her sense of humor and the love she showed to everyone she came in contact with. Many times in the past few weeks people would make it a point to say how easily it was to like Maggie, to love Maggie. If one would become Maggie’s friend then they indeed had a true friend. Never to tell a secret and always to respect someone else’s privacy, Maggie was a fierce believer in a person’s private life. Engaging with Maggie, she would be sure to make others the center of her attention, never demanding or requiring the spotlight for

herself. She was also a fierce believer in one’s liberty and the right that they may have to live as they wished as long as they did no harm to her loved ones. That is when her Scottish heritage would come out and she became a fierce defender of her people.

Maggie had very few other family members that lived in the States. But, she loved and held on very tightly to her cousin Elizebeth Molloy in Ft. Meyers. She cherished the weekly phone calls from Beth. Also Heather and Maria Castiglioni in Delaware who were always in awe and truly loved their Aunt Maggie.

Maggie was predeceased by her parents Edith and Hugh, her loving daughter Jennifer Allesandrini, and father-in-law Roland Brown.

She is survived by her adoring husband Dale Brown, her lovely daughter Michelle, her son-in-law Matthew, Dale’s loving son and daughter Dustin and Alicia. Nine grandchildren, cousins and countless friends who loved her dearly and will miss her tremendously. I wish I could name all of them, but the number would be too great.

Maggie was very adamant before she passed that she did not want a funeral, but that in her words her family and friends “should have a party.” And that everyone should eat and drink well, play good music loud, sing and dance, tell stories and of course laugh. This shall be done.

A celebration of Maggie’s life and spirit will be held in the summer of 2024. Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Resident Recreation Passport fee to increase slightly next year to $14

Starting next year, Michigan residents will pay $14 for the Recreation Passport – just a dollar more for a year’s worth of vehicle access to state parks and recreation areas and a host of other state-managed outdoor destinations. The moderate fee change is the result of a statutory provision that ensures Recreation Passport funding keeps pace with the economy. Basically, the law says that the Michigan Department of Natural Resources does not determine the cost of the Recreation Passport; instead, adjustments are based on the Detroit Consumer Price Index, as determined by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Recreation Passport is valid for 12 month when

purchased at time of license plate registration renewal

through the Secretary of State. Although some residents

have already received their registration renewal notices

(reflecting the old fee), the new rate takes effect Jan. 1 for

all in-person and online transactions.

There's a $5 convenience fee (except for Belle Isle Park)

when the Recreation Passport is not purchased at the time of

license plate registration renewal through the Secretary of

State, and is instead purchased at a state park or recreation

area.

The nonresident Recreation Passport fee annual pass also

will increase slightly, from $39 to $40, but the nonresident

daily pass will stay at $11.

The monies generated by the Recreation Passport goes

into a restricted fund that supports state park infrastructure

and operations, a local grant program for community

recreation agencies, state forest campgrounds, nonmotorized

pathways and trails, cultural and historic resource

restoration, and marketing and promotion.

 Marvin “Dale” Pollok

Marvin "Dale" Pollok, known affectionately as Dale to anyone that ever met him, passed away at home on December 11, 2023, in Williamston, Michigan, at the age of 91. Born on July 2, 1932, to the late Alton and Carol (Juderjohn) Pollok, he was destined to be a firecracker full of energy and always ready for the next adventure.

Dale was always smiling and was one of the happiest people you could ever meet. He was at his best in the barn, on the farm or working with animals. Dale shared this love with his daughter Jody and granddaughter Rachel Newsom. Dale was very athletic. He was very proud to be on the 1949 Championship undefeated Perry football team. He was also good at school and in 1951 graduated salutatorian of his class at Perry High School. During school, he was also involved in the FFA (Future Farmers of America).

After graduation, he kept playing baseball and tried his hand at boxing. He also competed with the horses in pulling competitions. His shelves are adorned with his many trophies and awards.

He was drafted into the United States Army, where he served his country. Upon returning home, he worked on the family farm, but also pursued a career at the artificial breeders and then Michigan State University veterinary clinic. He again worked with the animals.

In 1964, Dale married Sharon Jane Powers and shortly thereafter, they bought their own farm. They raised their daughter Jody and were very involved in 4-H, FFA, and the county fair. They raised Registered Polled Hereford beef cattle and later in life also acquired a barn full of Belgian draft horses. Jody and her husband, Brett, provided them the most amazing granddaughter. Rachel Elizabeth-dale Newsom, who Dale adored with every fiber of his being. She was his partner at the barn, with his projects and his best friend. He took great pleasure in watching Rachel grow, teaching her “the ways” of the farm and ultimately helping her with her 4-H projects that now fill the barn.

Both he and Sharon were active members of the Draft Horse Club, where they forged many enduring friendships. Dale and Sharon took their draft horses to the Shiawassee County Fair as surrey drivers for more than 20 years. They also took their horses to Clearview Orchard each fall and Aren’s Tree Farm each holiday season. Dale could also be seen at Northfork Farms helping out with wagon rides.

Dale will be remembered for his amazing smile and his outstanding work ethic. He spent Thanksgiving doing chores and taking care of the animals, which was right where he wanted to be. Dale's presence will forever be felt in the fields he tended, the hearts he warmed, and the family he cherished.

Memorials are suggested in Dale’s name to the Webberville FFA, C/O Webberville High School, 309 E. Grand River Ave., Webberville, MI 48892

 John Michael David

John Michael David passed away peacefully at his home on December 4, 2023.

He was born on May 14, 1962, in Highland Park, MI, the son of William and Lillie Ann (Hilzinger) David, both of whom preceded him in passing.

John was a 1980 Howell High School graduate and for the following 40 years worked alongside his father on the family farm in Fowlerville, MI. In addition to farming, he was also a self-taught sheet metal engineer.

John had a passion for the outdoors and was often referred to as a “Steward of the Forest.” His talents included fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, woodworking, music, and cooking, especially over an open fire. He enjoyed hosting many fishing and hunting camps with family and friends, especially with his brother, nephew and grand-nephews. John had a kind heart and was always willing to help his family, friends, and neighbors. He loved animals and could often be found nursing ones that were hurt or caring for their abandoned young. John is going to be greatly missed by family and friends.

He is survived by his siblings: Bonnie (Paul) Such, Mary Ellen Loomis, Martha (William) Christine, William (Kelly) David; his nieces and nephews: John (Tina) Loomis, Jennifer (Scott) Schreier, Josh Such, Jnanna David, Anna Christine, Alexandra David, Nick (Chelsea) Such, Peter Christine, Max Thomas; and 3 grand-nieces and 2 grand-nephews.

A celebration of John’s life will be held for family and friends at a later date.

 Suzanne A. (Sue) Maleitzke

On Monday, December 11, 2023, Suzanne A. (Sue) Maleitzke went home to be with her Heavenly Father. She was born on September 16, 1936 to Robert and Bernadine Holmes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sue grew up in Hastings, Michigan with her 5 sisters and one brother. She met her future husband, Gordon, while working in a restaurant near Haslett, Michigan. They were married June 8, 1967 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fowlerville.

Sue worked as a waitress, a typist, an office clerk and spent 40 years building and operating a local business with her husband. But, most of all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a good cook and made the best homemade pie crust ever.

Love for her family showed in everything she did. Her skill with ceramic crafts and painting was enjoyed by many, as she gave most finished pieces away. Her love and laughter will be missed by all who knew her.

Visitation was held on Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann Funeral Home. A funeral service was taking place on Saturday, December 16th at 1:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church following a visitation prior at noon with Pastor Diane Greble officiating. Burial was to follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Arrangements entrusted to Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

 Barbara Ann Gascon

Barbara Ann Gascon, born May 26, 1947, passed away on December 10, 2023. Barb is survived by her daughters Kristine (Terry) Clark and Lisa Lane, grandchildren Ashley (Dustin) Hagler, Nicole (Johnny) Wilson, Kayli (Ryan) Jennings, Jordan Lane, Derek (Payton) Lindig, and Alexis (Jacob Merrifield) Lindig, 9 great grandchildren, her sisters Yvonne (Eddie) Buchanan and Nancy (Frank) Smith and her best friend, Lynn Gougeon. She is predeceased by her husband Richard Gascon and her parents George and Annie Belanger.

Barb worked for many years in bookkeeping at Sears Roebuck and Company. In her early years she enjoyed gardening, traveling with her husband, spending time at her cottage, and being a groupie for her husband’s band. For the past 4½ years she was a resident at The Willows of Howell, where she had so many friends and considered it home. She loved doing the activities there, especially Bingo.

Barb will be remembered for her big heart and the smile that was always on her face.

Funeral services for Barb were being held Friday, December 15, at 11:00 AM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, MacDonald’s Chapel of Howell. Burial was to follow at Webberville Cemetery. Visitation was held on Thursday, Dec. 14, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.

Fowlerville 1st United Methodist holding ‘Longest Night Service’ on Dec. 21st

Fowlerville 1st United Methodist Church invites you to a          Longest Night Service, onThursday, Dec 21, at 6:30pm.

Some of you might be wondering what the “Longest Night” service is?

This is the celebration of the light piercing our darkness. God’s light coming to us to brighten our lives. It recognizes that the winter solstice (Dec 21) is the longest period of darkness for our part of the world. The Christmas season is often marked by expressions of joy, excitement, and happiness. It’s a time for family to gather and for churches to worship pointing to the hope that is found in the coming of the Christ child.

However, this service also recognizes the “darkness” that many people go through at this time of the year, things such as: grief over the loss of a loved one, or illness, divorce, loss of a job, loss of a home and other things too numerous to mention. Having suffered loss such as this, it can be a difficult time for many of us.

If you find yourself longing for the light of a “new day” the light of Christ, you will not be alone as we share in the liturgy of prayer and reflection on the longest night of the year. ‘Wreaths Across America’ planned at Greenwood Cemetery Saturday, Dec. 16

The Fowlerville Fourth of July Committee is proud to announce that they are sponsoring the 5th Annual ‘Wreaths Across America’ on Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville.

The program will start at 12 noon, with the gates open at 11 a.m.. The noontime start will coincide with the ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and similar events at over 4,000 other locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad. Each ceremony is as varied as the men and women it honors with speakers, moving sentiments, pageantry and often music. One thing every ceremony has in common is the placing of wreaths on grave sites to honor those who have served, many offering the ultimate sacrifice while serving this nation. On that day more than two million of them will be placed.

The approximate hour-long ceremony in Fowlerville will feature remarks by several speakers, including State Rep. Bob Bezotte.

The ceremony will be highlighted by the laying of wreaths for all of the military service branches, first responders, MIA/POWs, and Gold Star families. Special recognition will be given this year to the service and sacrifice of Vietnam War-era military with the laying of an Agent Orange Awareness Wreath.

There is no charge for this event. Veterans, their family and friends and the general public are all welcome to attend.

Brandon Denby, chairman of the Fowlerville 4th of July committee, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies and may be reached at (517) 546-0270, or by email @ BDenby@LivGov.com with questions.

Fowlerville, Michigan

Jared Evan McCarron, 19, passed away November 25, 2023. He was born on September 19, 2004, in Commerce Township to Kevin McCarron and Pamela (Little) McCarron.

Jared was a great kid who always worked hard and loved tools and anything with a motor from the time he was little. He had a vast love and knowledge for vehicles and could talk for hours about them with anyone who wanted to listen or learn from him. He mowed lawns and power washed houses in his neighborhood from an early age. He was a saver, but would spend a little on things he loved like dirt-bikes, his truck and tools.

Jared had a soft smile and a quiet way about him. He was easy going, generous and always willing to help out. We are eternally grateful and blessed for the short time we were given with him. Jared will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him.

Jared will be greatly missed by his Parents, Kevin and Pam McCarron; Siblings, Cameron and Addison McCarron; Grandmothers, Jeanine McCarron and Sharon Little; Aunts and Uncles, Lara McCarron, Kari (Jesse) McCarron-Leifert, Lisa (Shawn) Coristine, and Bryan Little; Cousins, Dylan, Josh, Penn, Oscar, Max; along with many other family and friends. Stuff the Bus-

December 9, 2023

Please help the Webberville Student Council, National Honor Society, and Dean Transportation staff by supporting the annual STUFF THE BUS event on December 09, 2023, at our local tree lighting ceremony. The bus will be in the parking lot across from the tree lighting ceremony. We are requesting non-perishable food items, diapers, wipes, toiletries, new toys, and monetary donations for the local food bank. Everything you give will help families in our community. Together we can all help make a difference this holiday season! Please Contact Tanja Scifers at Tscifers@webbervilleschools.org for more information.

The Giving Tree Project

Every year, the food bank and our staff provide a list of local children who are in need. The Student Council members then create tags for our "giving tree." Staff members can select a tag from the tree or our online Amazon wish list and purchase the items for the children. Once all the items have been purchased, the Student Council members work together packaging the items in gift boxes and preparing for the families to pick them up. If you would like to help with this project, the Student Council needs the following items: Stocking Stuffers, tissue paper, gift boxes, tape, gift tags and wrapping paper. Please Contact Tanja Scifers at Tscifers@webbervilleschools.org for more information.

Operation Christmas Cheer

Our Journalism students usually collect card donations this time of year. Students sign and decorate the cards, and then the Journalism class distributes them to the medical care facilities in the area. We are very grateful to the students, staff, and the community for your generous donations throughout the years. This year, we are happy to say that we’ve already received enough card donations to go out this holiday season, and we are not in need of any more at this time, but we are collecting postage stamps to give to some of these families to mail out a Christmas card to their loved ones. Please Contact Suzanne Cloudman at Scloudman@webbervilleschools.org for more information.

Livingston County Planning Dept. begins work on 2025 Master Plan

Work is underway on a 2025 Master Plan for Livingston County. The Planning Department is proud to announce their intention to create a new plan to help guide the development of the community.

A master plan is a policy document that sets a vision for the development of a community through best practices or recommendations for land uses, zoning, transportation, and other areas that help enhance quality of life for that community’s residents. Public participation and collaboration with townships, villages, and cities within the area will help the Planning Department prepare an impactful guide.

Residents can already start taking part in the planning process by answering a two-question survey found on the County’s website at https://milivcounty.gov/planning/livingston-county-2025-master-plan/. Tell us what you want to see added to the 2025 Master Plan and help us plan for the future.

Fowlerville Community Theater performing children’s musical in Howell

Fowlerville Community Theatre is excited to bring to the stage a new children’s musical ‘The Grunch’ at the Historic Howell Theater. ‘The Grunch’ tells the story of Rudy Grunch, a grumpy sixth grader who always feels like an outsider. When the entire school gets excited about the annual school musical, he comes up with the perfect plan to ruin it for everyone; he’ll steal the sets, costumes, and lights the night before it opens. But will the spirit of theater prevail?

This cast includes both children of all ages and adults. You may hear some familiar “show tunes” with a twist throughout this fun show. Don’t miss this show during the holiday season! The cast is excited to perform at the Historic Howell Theater, on 315 E Grand River Ave, in Howell. All seats are reserved, and can be purchased online only, so buy your tickets today.

Show dates and times are as follows: Friday, December 8th, 7:00pm; Saturday, December 9th, 2:00pm; & Sunday, December 10th, 2:00pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children under 18. Tickets may be ordered online at: www.fowlervilletheatre.com
