Village Council & School Board seats to be contested in November Election
By Steve Horton
Open seats on the Fowlerville Village Council and the Fowlerville Board of Education will be contested in the November General Election based in information as of last Thursday. Those offices will be on the non-partisan ballot.
The deadline for filing was last week; however, a candidate had until this past Friday afternoon (past the newspaper deadline) to withdraw.
There are three four-year terms that will need to be filled on the Village Council. Six candidates submitted petitions for those positions. They are Kenneth Bielous, Mary Helfmann, James Mayhew, Jane Mills, Jerry Peach, and Enrique Salfate.
Bielous is an incumbent, seeking a second term. Helfmann, who had served on council earlier, was appointed to fill a vacancy a few weeks ago. That seat is one of those up for election. The other council post to be voted on is now held by Wayne Copeland. He was also appointed recently to fill a vacancy, but as expected did not seek to remain on council.
The Village president post is also up election. The incumbent, Carol Hill, is unopposed in her bid for another two-year term.
The Fowlerville School Board also has three four-year terms that will be filled. Four candidates have filed for the positions. They are John Belcher, Ron Drinkert, Steve Frederick, and Trisha Reed.
Frederick is an incumbent and seeking another term of office. Both Belcher and Reed were appointed to board seats and are now seeking to be elected to full terms. Drinkert is making his first bid for the school board.
A partial, two-year term will be on the ballot as well. Mary Vielbig, who had been appointed to fill a vacancy, was the only candidate to file for that opening.
There are seats on the Fowlerville District Library Board that will also be on the November non-partisan ballot, but candidates had until August 14 to submit petition.

Michigan State Police Brighton Post to hold ‘Stuff the Blue Goose’
The Michigan State Police (MSP) Brighton Post is partnering with Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA) and Target to gather back-to-school supplies for the families in Livingston County.  The MSP Brighton Post, located at 4337 Buno Road, Brighton, is a drop off location for back-to-school supplies as one option and will collect donations until Monday, August 13, 2018.
If dropping off supplies at the post does not work for you, on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., Michigan State Police (MSP) will be holding ‘Stuff the Blue Goose’ events hosted at the Target located at 8043 Challis Road, Brighton.
What is ‘Stuff the Blue Goose’?  First, the Blue Goose is the name of MSP patrol vehicles.  Second, MSP partners with various agencies throughout the year collecting items needed for families in our communities.  During these ‘Stuff the Blue Goose’ events, we are collecting backpacks and back-to-school supplies for LESA.  All donated items will be distributed to families in Livingston County during LESA’s annual ‘Backpacks for Kids/Connect for Kids’ event which will be held in August.  Third, concerning the ‘stuff’ portion of the event, we will have Trooper on site with their patrol vehicles available to be “stuffed” or filled with all of the provided donations.

 Introducing the Livingston Women's Club
By Mary Lynn Thompson
I have been anxious to introduce the Livingston Women's Club to the readers of this fine newspaper for some time.
It seems that in 1987 a small group of women started this non-profit organization to help the needy in Livingston County. Since then we have grown and continue to benefit our County through various endeavors.
We are proud that every "Holiday Season" the Club hopes to put smiles on the faces of about 17,000 needy residents who might not otherwise have a reason to enjoy Christmas. We accomplish this through our "Giving Tree Project" where helpful citizens pick a "Dove" from an artificial tree and fill the attached wish.
Our Group also handles a "Crisis Fund" where we have helped residents with school tuition, car payments, leaky roofs, and even money for food.
We're proud of our "Scholarship Students", and continue to keep in touch, even after they enter college.
All women who have a caring heart, a willingness to share with others, and wish to make changes in another person's life are encouraged to join the Livingston Women's Club. For further information, please call Mary Lynn at 810-229-7356 or visit www.thelivingstonwomensclub.com

Diego Senn
On Friday, July 13, 2018, Diego Senn, loving husband and father of four small children, died in a single engine plane accident in Spokane, Washington. He was 30 years old. All those that know and love him grieve deeply at his passing and yet celebrate the amazing life he lived and rejoice in the knowledge of his new and perfect body now home with the Lord.
Diego was born on September 29, 1987 in Aarau, Switzerland to Rodolfo and Beatrice Senn, and later became older brother to one brother and two sisters. Diego spent an incredibly rich and joyful childhood in the Amazon jungle where his parents served as missionaries in a small indigenous village. Diego attended Daniel Harden Memorial Elementary School and graduated from Puraquequara High with a 4.0.
After high school, he moved to the United States and attended New Tribes Bible Institute in Waukesha, WI and then in 2008 attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Moody Suma Cum Laude with a bachelors in Biblical studies and met the love of his life while in school there. Diego and Naomi were married on June 5, 2010 in Naomi's home town of Fowlerville, MI. They had their first child on February 23, 2012 and shortly after, moved to Spokane, WA where Diego attended Moody Aviation and got his commercial pilot's license.
Diego and Naomi welcomed their premature miracle twins on March 8, 2016. The young couple dreamed of heading overseas to serve as a missionary pilot family but because of their twins' fragile health decided to stay in the U.S. until the twins were stronger. During this time, Diego served on the Moody Aviation team and eventually became one of Moody's most proficient and beloved flight instructors.
Diego is remembered for his tireless dedication to what was most important in his life: his Lord and Savior, his family, his flying, and training missionary pilots. People gravitated to him. He told the most amazing stories, embellished to the point of hilarity. He was a loyal friend and his laugh and smile lit up every room he walked into. Diego was a man of integrity, humility, and faithfulness. He spoke kindly of others and genuinely cared for them.
Diego was an unreserved family man. He would plan special surprises and adventures for them and nothing made him happier than simply spending time with them. He loved his wife and little ones with his whole heart. He protected them and led them faithfully. Diego was passionate about his calling as a missionary pilot and poured into many students' lives not only as an instructor, but also as a mentor, encourager, and friend. His greatest desire was that others would know Jesus as he did. His life was so full, and he would want it clarified that it wasn't because of any personal achievements, but because he believed and glorified the On who came to give fullness of life. Diego served his Savior to his last breath.
He was given only 30 years to live. That seems like such a terribly short and unfair length of time, yet the years are disproportionate to the number of lives he touched. His life AND his death have impacted and continue to impact thousands. His life AND his death are a vibrant testimony to the love and faithfulness of Christ. Some of Diego's favorite verses were Hebrews 12:1-3 (ESV), “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Diego ran his race. He ran it so very well. He is now a part of that great cloud of witnesses, praising His Savior.
Diego is survived by his wife Naomi, his four children, Lionel, Malachi, Ellanie, and a baby girl due in December, his parents Rodolfo and Beatrice Senn, his brother Rafael (Kelsey) Senn, his sisters Angelica (Jeffrey) Roszhart and Fatima Dos Santos, three nephews, his grandparents Juan and Marion Senn and Alfred and Kathi Schwarz, and literally hundreds of other family members and close friends.
It is with profound sadness that his family grieves his death. It is with firm hope that his family celebrates his new life in eternity.
Diego's memorial service was held at Fourth Memorial Church in Spokane on Friday, July 20 at 11:00 a.m. Another memorial service will be held at Community Bible Church in Brighton, Michigan on Friday, July 27. Please join us in celebrating the life of this faithful and beloved disciple and son of God.
“For this God is our God forever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.” Psalm 48:14 (NIV)

It also provides a great opportunity for our youth to learn about the legislative process and how their government works.”
To enter, students must fill out a special contest bookmark with 10 books they have read over the summer. The bookmarks can be found at the Howell, Hartland, and Fowlerville libraries, and there is no limit to the number of entries.  St. John's Lutheran Church offers summer programs for adults and youth
Summer is here and St. John's Lutheran Church is offering programs and worship for folks who are busy but would like to stay connected to worship during the week.
On Wednesday July 18, worship with Holy Communion will be offered at 7:00 p.m. It is casual, so come as you are. It will include music, scripture, a message and prayer for healing to those who would like to receive.
"This is an opportunity to stay connected with God, with community and one another, even if you are busy every single weekend of the summer," said Pastor Diane Greble. "Wednesday worship offers a window of peace in the midst of busy weeks. We welcome anyone who is seeking these things to join us."
In addition, St. John's is offering another Community Bible Study to which anyone in the local area is welcome to participate. This four-week session will be based on the work of Bill Hybels and his study, "Just Walk Across the Room." Following the example of Jesus, participants will develop their natural, relational approach to telling their own story of faith to others.
"We believe people still need to encounter one another and know one another. We would like to help people break down the barriers through encouragement and friendship," said Greble, adding that the program will run on Tuesdays, July 17, 24, 31 and August 7 at 6 p.m. and will include a light supper. There is no cost; please register at http://www.stjohnsfowlerville.org or by calling 517-223-9108 before July 15.
Of course, summer would not be complete without Vacation Bible School (VBS)! St. John's is hosting five nights of fun, faith and friendship once again. Kids ages four through teen are invited to join us on the ‘Rolling River Rampage’, beginning Sunday July 8 through Thursday July 12.  There is no cost and it includes a free family dinner each night. Each child needs to bring a white cotton t-shirt for the first night and they will tie-dye their shirts on Sunday evening.
Pre-register your kids at http://www.stjohnsfowlerville.org or call 517-223-9108 or show up on Sunday and register then. St. John's is glad to welcome any who seek the love and grace of God, on Sunday mornings at 9:30 or at any of these events.

The Accidentals to perform at Concerts at the Courthouse on Friday, July 13
A variety of area musicians will take center stage each and every Friday night throughout the summer on the lawn of the Historic Howell Courthouse as Concerts at The Courthouse celebrates its 20thAnniversary.  This perennially popular program is a free concert series presented by the Livingston Arts Council throughout the summer, featuring rock, folk and blues entertainment at the outdoor family (and pet)-friendly venue. Pack a blanket, lawn chair, and a few snacks, or come early and eat at one of Howell’s many downtown restaurants before enjoying the evening’s entertainment with family, friends and neighbors.
This year’s “Best Of” series continues with the return of The Accidentals after their spectacular show last summer. The group will perform on Friday, July 13, from 7-9 p.m. at the Courthouse Amphitheater in Downtown Howell.
Named among Yahoo Music’s “Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017,” The Accidentals’ adventure began in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Having both grown up in musical families with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers, their shared influences bounced between classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, alt-rock, and the obscure.
Dubbing themselves after the musical notes that fall outside of a key signature, The Accidentals recorded and released a pair of independent albums in 2012 and 2013, the latter funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter. Their original songs revealed a band with wide-ranging influences but always true to their orchestral roots. National applause and attention followed, as did acclaimed collaborations with some fellow local artists and independent filmmakers. Other career highlights included scoring arrangements for a 75-piece orchestra to accompany them on their original songs as well as arranging pieces for an opera/dance production with Jennifer and Ryan Lott (Son Lux).
The past five years have seen The Accidentals perform over a thousand live shows, including headline dates, festival sets, and shared stages along such like-minded acts as Martin Sexton, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Bird, The Wailers, Joan Baez and others. 2015 saw the band embark on their first full-scale national tour, funded in part by an Indiego go ‘online garage sale”. That year’s SXSW debut saw them hailed by Billboard for “displaying a genre-hopping range of influences and some smart songwriting skills to go with their abundant musical chops.”
With their most recent album, ODYSSEY, The Accidentals have conjured a truly one of its kind sound and vision, booming with free-thinking musicality, wisdom, and an understanding that growth is a process, not something that happens overnight. The Accidentals are already moving forward on their amazing journey, rolling down the windows on an open road towards someplace that’s both true and transcendent.
Concerts at The Courthouse runs every Friday night from June 29th to August 24th. In the event of inclement weather, concerts may be cancelled.  Listen to WHMI 93.5FM for updates and/or visit the Livingston Arts Council Facebook page. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.
