Ruth Elizabeth U’Ren
Ruth Elizabeth (Line) U’Ren, a longtime Fowlerville resident, went home to heaven on March 22, 2018. She was born on Oct. 29, 1931. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Kenneth (Bill) U’Ren. Also surviving are her children: Anna (Ron) Carter, Brian (Mary) U’Ren, and Chuck U’Ren; her grandchildren: Joshua, Rachael (Dan), Jason (Brittany), Brittany (PR), Jordan, Brianna, Jacob, Matthew (Amanda), Ryan and Caitlin (Adam) and her great grandchildren: James, Philip, Kinsley, Alexis, Olivia, Parker, Jaxson, and Abel.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents: Lester and Florence Line; sisters: Anna Line and Dora (Loren) Tuthill; her baby daughter: Debra Kay U-Ren; and her grandmother: Bertha Line, who raised her with Lester after Florence passed away when Ruth was two months old. Ruth took care of Bertha during Bertha’s last ten years of life until she passed away at the age of 102.
Ruth worked at Citizens Insurance in Howell after graduating from Fowlerville High School. Bill and Ruth were married on April 27, 1957 and after that she stayed home to raise their children. Along with doing that, she managed the books for Bill’s business and worked part-time cleaning room for her in-laws.
When her children were older, she went to work for Dr. Kellams. She started off cleaning his office and clinic and then became the front office receptionist, holding that position until Dr. Kellams retired. She then took on the role of school crossing guard for Fowlerville Schools at the corner of Grand River and Hibbard Street. She loved the kids and was there regardless of rain, snow, or heat. She enjoyed this position until it was no longer available. Ruth finished her career doing what she loved, working with kids as a lunch and playground monitor until she retired.
Ruth volunteered for 25 years at the Fowlerville United Methodist Church as the Sunday School treasurer. Both Ruth and Bill spent time at church functions and also helped out at various activities, ranging from working at the fairground concession stand to serving meals at church. Ruth loved the Lord and serving people. Both of them continued to serve until their health became an issue and prevented them from actively serving. They loved the people and pastors at the church—past and present.
They were also involved for several years with the Fowlerville Senior Citizens Center.
After health issues required them to move from Fowlerville, both Bill and Ruth resided at the Willows of East Lansing. After settling in, they volunteered to go around with welcome packets for new residents. They came to enjoy and love the people at the Willows—including the residents, the nurses and aides, the therapists, and the administrative staff. Ruth loved people, especially children. Over the years, she stayed in touch with family and friends with letters and cards. She loved to visit with people. Ruth would light up when the little kids came around, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Her many hobbies included reading, bingo, playing cards, and socializing with people
Her family would like to thank the staff of the Willows who loved and cared for Ruth during her stay there as well as Great Lakes Caring hospice who made the end of Ruth’s journey in this world loving and peaceful for her and her family.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 26, at noon at the Herrmann Funeral Home in Fowlerville, with Pastor Thomas Tarpley officiating. Visitation took place from 9 a.m. to noon prior to the services. Arrangements were handled by Herrmann Funeral Home.

Garrett Hardesty
Keith "Garrett" Hardesty, 50, of Union City, formerly of Fowlerville, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at his home.
A memorial service was held at 11 AM on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation Services of Union City. Garrett was born in Detroit, MI on August 29, 1967 to Patricia Ann Krigner and Gordon Leroy Hardesty. He attended Howell High School and Cleary Business College. Garrett worked as an auto assembly parts team leader for Ogihara America Corp of Howell from 1987 to 2004. He was most recently employed by the Walmart Distribution Center of Coldwater for the past 14 years.      Garrett was truly one of a kind. To those who knew Garrett, his sense of humor was one thing that would bring a smile or giggle to the people around him. One of the most influential and beloved people during his formative years was his grandfather, Howard T. Hardesty. From him Garrett gained his passion for electronics and his inquisitiveness. In his earlier years, Garrett enjoyed riding dirt bikes and racing motocross. He and his brother Ron spent many adventurous days on their bikes.
As an adult Garrett was a hard and dedicated worker, but certainly enjoyed his free time.  One of his favorite things to do was going on adventures and traveling with his loving partner of 18 years, Beth Ann Raymond. His other interests included following Detroit Tigers baseball, playing guitar, flight simulator gaming, spoiling his kitty cats and just lounging in his man cave. Garrett's most recent prized possession was his Jeep Wrangler; driving it brought out his youthful spirit.
Garrett is survived by his life partner, Beth Ann Raymond, step-son, Alex Grohalski; mother, Patricia Krigner; step-father, Terry Krigner; mother-in-law Patsy (Ken) Gould; brother, Ron (Sandie) Hardesty; sister, Kimberly (William) Clinton; half-sister, Tina Hardesty Smith; half-sister, Susie Hardesty; a special aunt, Janice Stephenson; and cousin, Jennifer Ploof; as well as numerous other beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon, in 2016.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Branch County Humane Society. Please visit www.lighthousefuneral.com to share your condolences and memories with the family.

Waneta R. Dorrance
Waneta R. Dorrance, 89, of Fowlerville, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 9, 2018 at The Willows in Howell.
Waneta, also known as “Toots”, was born in Conway Township on February 26, 1927 to Harold and Ruth (Antcliff) Klein. Waneta graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1947 and worked at the Byerly grocery store where she met Howard Dorrance.  The couple was married in June, 1948.  In the early years, Waneta worked at Citizens Insurance Company in Howell until becoming a mother.  Waneta and Howard also farmed for a few years before purchasing Miner’s grocery store in 1968. The couple owned Howard’s Market (now Save On Family Foods) until March, 1985.
Waneta LOVED to cook!  In 1985, the former Snack Shop became Waneta’s Diner, where popular offerings of Friday Night Cod Dinners, plate-size pancakes and homemade pies were served for five years.  After selling the restaurant, Waneta continued to cook for the community by catering many weddings, graduation parties, and other special occasions, with her famous potato salad always a top request.  She also cooked for the weekly Rotary Club luncheon for several years.
Being a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Fowlerville, Waneta was an active member of the UMW group where, again, she offered her cooking skills for the annual Turkey Supper, Mother/Daughter Banquet, funeral luncheons and other church functions.
Waneta also volunteered for the Historical Society, worked at the Fowlerville Fair most years, and overall always played an active role in service to the community.  She and husband Howard were honored as Grand Marshals of the Christmas in the Ville parade in 2009.
In her spare time, Waneta also enjoyed sewing, making over one hundred quilts and blankets for friends, family, raffles and other donations for the needy and homebound.  She enjoyed reading, going to Monday coffee at McDonald’s with her friends, and certainly spending time with her family.
Survivors include daughter Nanci (Calvin) Forster of Fowlerville, grandson Evan (Shayna) Forster of Byron, granddaughters Jessica Schliska of Owosso and  Nicole Spicer of Jackson, KY, and five great-granddaughters.  Also surviving are sisters Judy (Dennis) Haskell and Lucille (Jack) Sherwood of Fowlerville, brother Merlan Klein of Zephyrhills, FL, step-brothers Richard (Kate) Rudnicki, Jim (Dixie) Rudnicki,, and step-sisters Kathryn Sovie and Linda (Al) Sliwinski.  Waneta was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Howard Dorrance in 2011, son Kenneth Dorrance, and brother Don (Ruth) Klein.
Arrangements were made by Herrmann’s Funeral Home in Fowlerville. Visitation took place on Sunday, March 11 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home and again Monday, March 12 from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of Fowlerville. Funeral services immediately followed at 11:00 am.  Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in Fowlerville, with a luncheon served at the church afterwards.

Free Vision Screening for Children to be offered at Webberville Easter Egg Hunt
A Free Vision Screening for Children is being offered during the Webberville Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 31, starting at 10a.m. at the Webberville High School football field.  The screening is sponsored by the Webberville Lions Club and is part of the group’s Project KIDsight.
The screening is primarily intended for children ages one to six, but older children are welcome.
Project KIDsight is a vision screening program to detect potential vision disorders in children that can cause permanent vision loss when treatment is delayed. Through Project KIDsight, your child's vision will be tested with a high tech camera that will quickly (1 second) and accurately determine whether your child's vision is a Pass or a Refer. When the result of the vision screening is a Refer, the child should be examined by an ophthalmologist or optometrist as soon as possible.
Five percent of all preschool age children experience vision loss from an undetected vision disorder, and treatment options increase when vision problems are detected early in a child's life. Normal vision can usually be restored with eye glasses, contact lenses and sometimes patching.
A consent form attached must be filled out before the free screening. If you have any questions contact, "Chad McCann" <cmccann@lmsf.net>
