Parade, fireworks to highlight Fowlerville 4th of July Celebration

By Steve Horton

It’s back!

After being cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the public-health restrictions in place, the Fowlerville 4th of July Celebration returns next Sunday. And as in past years, the evening parade and a fireworks diplay at dusk will highlight the local event.

New this year will be the landing of a Blackhawk helicopter at the Fowlerville Community Park. The First Baptist Church will once again host their “God & country Celebrtion prior to the parade, while the Fowlerville United Brethren Church will have a “4th of July Party” that starts after the parade and continues until the fireworks.

There’ll be inflatables at the Park and food vendors located in the Downtown and at the Community Park during the day and evening and at the fairgrounds prior to the fireworks.

“We’re looking forward to putting on this event after a year’s delay,” said Brandon Denby, chair of the organizing committee. “It’ll be nice to get the community back together to enjoy the various activities that are planned.”

The inflatables—provided courtesy of the Michigan National Guard—will be set up near the park pavilion, with kids able to start using them at noon.

The Blackhawk helicopter is also being provided by the National Guard and is scheduled to land in the outfield area of the two ball fields at 1 p.m. Extra special is the fact that it will be flown by three 2008 Fowlerville High School graduates and current residents: CW3 Ian Mihfeld (pilot in command), CW2 Mike Mallon (pilot) and Sgt. John Tiefenbach (crew chief).

“The public is encouraged to watch the helicopter land,” said Denby, adding that the Blackhawk will be available after that for a close-up view and people can talk with the crew from Fowlerville until their departure at 4:30 p.m.

The “God & country Celebration” will be held at the Baptist Church on South Grand River Avenue from 3 to 6 p.m. Games, inflatables, food, a bingo tent, mini-golf, and a 3-point contest are among the activities. A Corn Hole Tournament will take place, starting at 4 p.m. Sign-up for this competition begins at 3 p.m.

The United Brethren’s “4th of July Party” features food, summer treats, and live music. The public is also invited to watch the fireworks from the church grounds. The church is located at 9300 W. Grand River.

The parade starts at 7p.m. The route will start at Veterans Drive on the west end of town and then proceed east along Grand River Avenue through the Downtown to the St. Agnes Catholic Church parking lot. Joe Hune, the former Fowlerville state legislator, will once again serve as the emcee, while Michelle Soli will be singing the National Anthem once the Honor Guard reaches the Main Four corners.

The organizing committee has launched a new award this year, named after ‘Smokey the Clown’ aka Allen Hale who was a founding member of the committee. Hale, who passed away in 2011, headed the crew that launched the fireworks. He was a longtime member of the local fire department and served on the Webberville Village Council, where he and his wife Liz and family resided. Part of that time on council included a stint as Village president.

As ‘Smoky the Clown,’ he took part in different community events, most notably at Kids Day during the Fowlerville Family Fair.

“Allen Hale was a longtime community volunteer and a key part in putting on the annual July 4th Celebration, so we wanted to name the award in his honor,” said Denby. “The recipient will be someone who reflects his many years of involvement and commitment to this community.”

Plans are to announce the inaugural winner of the award after the singing of the National Anthem.

As for parade participants, Denby urged churches, organizations, businesses, and interested individuals to take part. While reservations are not required, if you’d like to reserve a spot or have questions email Michelle Soli at michellesoli@yahoo.com .

He noted that floats, marching units, classic cars, tractors, horses, and decorated bikes are among the types of entries that are welcome to take part. Denby added that elected officials and political candidates are welcome as well. Line-up begins at 5:45 p.m. at Veterans Drive.

As always, the main attraction of the Celebration and the concluding act is the fireworks display that begins at dusk, shortly after 10 p.m. Prime viewing areas are the Community Park and the Fowlerville Fairgrounds. While entrance to those venues is free, a $5 donation to help pay for next year’s fireworks is requested.

“The value of this year’s fireworks is around $16,000,” said Denby, who noted that the display typically lasts around a half-hour. “We feel we’ll be offering a very entertaining show this Sunday night, and our goal for next year is to put on an even more spectacular display. We invite everyone to come out, enjoy the different activities, visit with each other, have fun, and celebrate our nation’s birthday.”

Free Summer Internship Prep Course offered to young adults

Young adults will be prepared for the world of work thanks to a free summer internship prep course, a new initiative with Michigan Works! Southeast and Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG).

#MI-Internship Prep is a free course offered virtually throughout the year for young adults aged 16-24 years old. In four weeks, participants will learn how to create a professional portfolio, develop essential skills, and practice interview strategies with high-profile employers.

“Guiding youth within our region allows us to equip them with essential skills to launch their career. That is truly a fulfilling role as a teacher” says Vincent D’Ettorre, Acting Adult Education Supervisor at Michigan Works! Southeast. “The virtual platform allows students to build upon their strengths in a safe environment,” said D’Ettorre.

“The Internship program from MWSE provides youth with an opportunity to focus in on their career of choice based on their interest and aptitude turning that interest into an actionable plan for their future employment success,” says Pam Gosla, Research and Education Manager at Michigan Works! Southeast.

Sonya Blanzy, Director of Operations at Youth Solutions, the organization who oversees the JMG program believes in the value of this program. “Preparing young people for the world of work, including internships, is essential to their long-term success. We applaud Michigan Works! Southeast as they help young adults discover their passions and begin their career path. Teaching youth the skills they need to be successful in life is not only benefiting them, but also a solution to the labor shortage felt across Michigan.“

Young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 are encouraged to apply and can learn more at mwse.org/mi-internship-prep. The first cohort began Monday, May 24th, with cohorts recurring throughout the summer.

Participants invited to join upcoming Fowlerville 4th of July Parade

With the Fowlerville 4th of July Celebration fast approaching, participants are invited to join the evening parade. As in the past, the parade will line up at Veterans Drive on the west end of town and then proceed along Grand River Avenue through the Downtown to the St. Agnes Catholic Church parking lot.

Brandon Denby, the chair of the organizing committee, urged churches, organizations, businesses, and interested individuals to take part. While reservations are not required, if you’d like to reserve a spot or have questions email Michelle Soli at michellesoli@yahoo.com .

Line-up begins at 5:45 p.m. and the parade steps off at 7 p.m. Joe Hune, the former Fowlerville state legislator, will once again serve as the emcee.

“With the celebration having been cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to make the overall event as big and entertaining as possible,” said Denby. “Having a nice parade with lots of entries is a great way to do that.”

He noted that floats, marching units, classic cars, tractors, horses, and decorated bikes among the types of entries that are welcome to take part. Denby added that elected officials and political candidates are also welcome.

The parade, followed by the fireworks display at 10 p.m. (dusk), are the highlights of the celebration. The First Baptist Church of Fowlerville is planning to hold their “God & Freedom” activities during the afternoon prior to the parade, while the Fowlerville United Brethren Church will host various activites after the parade.

“We’ll have inflatible bounce houses for the kids, along with musical entertainment,” Denby noted, adding that food vendors will be located at the Park and fairgrounds prior to the fireworks—two main areas where people can view the display.

Denby said that a map will published in next week’s issue of the News & Views, detailing the location of the various activities, where food trucks will be available, and areas where the fireworks can be viewed.

Thomas Michael Wise

Thomas Michael Wise, age 55, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 26, 2021. He was born on November 22, 1965 to Jacob William Wise and Barbara Ann (Schulte) Wise. The family moved from Lincoln Park, MI out to the Morrice area when Tom was a young boy where he attended and graduated from Morrice High School in 1983.

He leaves behind his beautiful wife, Sheila, of 32-1/2 years, a daughter, Jamie (Jim) Andrews; a son, Joshua (Jordyn) Wise; father, Jacob (Janet) Wise; and a brother, John (Jenny) Wise. He was also one cool grandpa to Allison, Mikayla and Eric and uncle to many incredible nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara; brother, Jay (Janet Copeland); and his sweet granddaughter, Allison.

There was not a single person who met Tom, aka “Tom Bear/Tommy” that didn’t like him. He was easy going, fun loving and kind; a man who drew people to him with his smile. He was always there to lend a hand but took nothing in return. He was a follower of Christ who loved his fam ily more than anything and was a loyal and kind hearted friend to all.

Tom’s first long-term career began at Century Truss where he dedicated 26 years of hard work. The company closed its doors in 2008. In the years following, he found a love for creating and working with his hands and in June of 2012 Tom and his wife Sheila built a business from the ground up, doing various work for homeowners all over Michigan. In 2013 he studied hard and earned his builders license for their home renovation company, Ts WiseWorks LLC. His attention to detail, work ethic and craftmanship helped create a very successful business, which his wife still owns and operates today.

When not busy with their company, Tom had many hobbies. He and his wife restored a 1973 VW Westy and traveled all over the map. He enjoyed wine making, loved to hunt and fish and he loved spending time with family and with friends at music festivals. He also loved spending weekends at Mack Lake. If there was good music, a bonfire and laughter, you can bet Tom was there in his floppy hat, with a cold drink and a peace sign raised in the air. An incredibly loving man who impacted many, he is deeply missed.

Please join us on Friday, June 25, and take part in Tom’s Celebration of Life gathering. It will be held in the family’s backyard, located at 2409 E Lovejoy Rd. in Perry, starting at 3pm. Pastor Tim Flickinger will be officiating. We hope you will come share your memories and enjoy good food among family and friends.

 Barbara Jean Butler (née O’Brien)

Anyone who knew Barb even a bit realizes that we lost and Heaven gained this week. She was truly beloved by her family and many, many friends. She loved helping people and was giving to a fault. She was the first to offer help and the last to leave your side. She was so talented at so many things that there are just too many to list. She was well known for her amazing sense of humor and doted on her family and dogs, Rose and Lily. What none of us will ever forget about her was her quest to be the #1 MSNBC armchair politician and her secret ambition to run the United States.

Barbara is survived by her aunt, Margeret Lundgren; her brothers, Lawrence O’Brien and Dennis O’Brien; her children, Shelley Butler, Dennis Grim, Brien Grim, Shannon Butler, and Joseph William Butler III; her grandchildren, Shawn, Jeremy, Shalane, William (Angela), Becky (Adam), Sydney, Chander, Savanah, Devin (Erik), Haven (Zayd), Bastien, Wren, Jessop, Lennox, and Dylan (Elaine); her great grandchildren, AJ and Everett; her dog, Lily; and her many other beloved friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Rita O’Brien; her husband, Joseph William Butler II; her ex-husbands, Edward Guy and Richard David Grim; her sisters-in-laws, Patrina O’Brien and Brenda O’Brien; her son, Mark Guy; and her dog, Rose.

Arrangements entrusted to Fisher Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Redford, Michigan.

 Helen (Bement) Bigelow

Helen L. (Bement) Bigelow, 91, of Fremont, Michigan went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2021.

She was born on June 16, 1929 in Webberville to Lewis and Marcia (Farnsworth) Bement. Helen grew up in a large family on her father’s farm near Webberville, and she graduated from Webberville High School.

A couple of days after marrying young enlisted man Robert Bigelow, Helen rode a bus to Texas with her husband and started a lifetime of traveling and working together. Their 20 years as a U.S. Army family took them, and eventually their five children, all over the United States, and they also lived in Germany twice. When Robert’s 20th year in the military took him to a tour of duty as a helicopter pilot and maintenance chief in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967, Helen cared for their five children in Michigan. When he retired from the Army in 1967, they began a successful farming career in Smyrna, Mich. that lasted for a few years until they heeded God’s call into the gospel ministry.

It was during the farm years that Helen began expanding her work as a mother by welcoming foster children into the family. They continued providing a home to foster children for many years, more than 80 children over 25 years. When they sold the farm and Robert began studying for the pastoral ministry at Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, Helen also took classes there. She also graduated from the Child Evangelism Fellowship Institute.

Helen was a vital part of the pastoral ministry in 13 churches altogether, including Aetna Calvary Church and Country Bible Church in Newaygo County and Gowen Bible Church in Montcalm County. She worked in children’s ministries and led Bible studies in a host of communities in Michigan and other states. She was still leading a ladies Bible study until just a couple of years ago. Late in the couple’s more than 40 years of ministry, when Robert served as the chaplain of a large Christian RV campground in Texas, she conducted an extensive visitation program and led a popular Bible study for more than 100 women.

Helen once estimated that, during their 70 years of marriage and military and ministry service, they moved nearly 50 times. Nobody knows an exact number.

Helen was known for her love of God, her family and all children, and for her lively sense of humor, her compassion for people, and a love of singing and using her deep contralto voice in harmony.

She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Bigelow; five children: Robert L. (Cheryl) Bigelow of Greenville, South Carolina, Charles L. (Shani) Bigelow of Liberty Hill, Texas, Wayne E. (Carol Brooks) Bigelow of Madison, Wisconsin, Patricia A. (Greg Sykes) Bigelow of Caledonia, and LouAnne J. (Richard) Wheater of Fremont; seven grandchildren: Jason (Cassie) Bigelow, Brad (Linze) Bigelow, Jeremy Bigelow, Candy Wungnema, Thomas Charles Bigelow, Patti Wheater, and Richard Wheater, Jr.; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Bob (Joan) Bement.

Helen was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers: Ella Foreman, Ilah Mae Horton, Nanette Allen, Dorothy Meyer, Lena Foreman, Mildred Hawley, Tess Owens, Richard Bement, Lois Nelson, Cleo Chase, Juanita Haskell, Louie Arnold Stringham, Ben Bement and Si Bement.

A private family service was held in January at Country Bible Church with Pastor Len Lason officiating.

A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 1 p.m. in the outdoor pavilion at The Shack Bed and Breakfast at 2263 W. 14th Street, White Cloud, Mich.

Interment was in the Sherman Township Cemetery in Newaygo County.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to Country Bible Church, or to Hospice of Michigan, Newaygo County. Contact information and an online guest book are available online at www.kroeze-wolffis.com. Arrangements are by Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home of Fremont.

Livingston United Way accepting sign-ups & projects for Day of Caring

Livingston County United Way is excited to announce that volunteer sign up and work site registrations are open for Day of Caring, which will be held on Wednesday, August 11.

Griffith Realty has signed up to be the Major Sponsor for the 2021 Day of Caring, which is the largest one-day community service event in Livingston County. One day. One Community. Amazing Results.

In 2020, we were unable to hold this amazing event due to Covid, and expect an increase in project requests due to repairs/projects being postponed. The last Day of Caring event held in 2019 brought together 1,201 volunteers, to accomplish a total of 105 projects. These included assisting senior citizens with home related repairs and improvements, building wheelchair ramps, helping support 62 referrals from our local agencies and schools, collecting school supplies and distributing 1,000 school backpacks, as well as participating in local food and personal care drives.

The Livingston County United Way collects worksite proposals from local residents, seniors, schools, disabled residents and non-profit agencies. The work is often minor household repair projects, cleaning and yardwork that the homeowner is not able to do on their own. Anyone can recommend a worksite and are encouraged to apply for a neighbor or friend who needs extra help. Deadline for worksite projects is June 28. All proposed worksites are reviewed for approval by the Livingston County United Way Day of Caring Committee.

Volunteers are invited to register individually or as groups. They can designate preferences for location, type of project, special skills and specific shift times (9:00 a.m. – noon or 1:00-4:00 p.m.) or a full day commitment. Deadline for volunteer registration is July 6.

Companies, clubs and organizations are invited and encouraged to participate together. What better way to showcase an organization’s volunteer spirit while making a difference, improving employee morale and enthusiasm through team building and connecting individuals to their community and coworkers.

If you are unable to participate in this wonderful community service event but still want to help, consider a company sponsorship or personal donation. All sponsorships and donations will be used to buy supplies needed for Day of Caring worksite projects!

To register, get involved or learn more, visit lcunitedway.org/day-of-caring-2021/ or call 810-494-3000.
