Mary. L. Smith
Mary L. Smith, age 94 of  Webberville MI, died on March 16, 2020. She was born March 30, 1925, in Iliff CO, the daughter of Jess & Mary (Abood) Korrey. Her mother died when she was a newborn. Her father, an immigrant from Lebanon, subsequently moved to Lansing to find a wife among Lansing’s Lebanese immigrant population.  She has lived in Michigan since she was two years old. She was educated to the 9th grade at West Junior High School in Lansing.
Mary was a 50-year smoker of unfiltered cigarettes,  quitting at age 72, and was a survivor of ovarian cancer at age 25 and then breast cancer at 80.

Later, Mary and her husband, Norman, had a harness racing career from 1963-1988 with up to 100 horses at one time, owning two farms in Webberville and Melbourne Fl. During that time, in 1972, she went to work at an electrical auto assembly plant for awhile.

She passed away two weeks before that date.
She met her husband, Norman, a plumber at Oldsmobile, in 1944 when he drove by her when she was walking along the street. They were married for over 49 years before  he died in 1993 at age 66 of a heart attack—the same way she died.
Because her cancer treatment had left her infertile, the couple adopted two boys: Ted and Eugene.
She is survived by both sons: Theodore Smith, age 68, and Eugene Smith, age 64, and daughter-in-law Cindy Smith, all of Webberville. She also has three surviving grandchildren: Gene Smith (Williamston), April Smith (Ohio), and Beverlyn Salva (Webberville, along with two great-grandchildren: Aaron Smith and Gabriella Smith.

A SPECIAL thank you to all her friends and workmates that assisted Mary throughout her difficult times. Our family will never forget your love for Mary.
Mary donated her body to MSU Anatomical Resources for science study, They have called with MANY THANK YOUs to our family for honoring her wishes. They said that students and doctors will learn very much for humanity and disease study. Paying it forward is who Mary was.

Fowlerville High Alumni Association seeks donations for scholarship fund
In 1974, officers of the Fowlerville Alumni Association established the FHS Alumni Scholarship program. Monies are raised yearly to enable the organization to present scholarships to members of the current FHS graduating class. Over the past 40+ years, well over 10 graduating seniors have been recipients of this scholarship.
The organization hopes to continue this tradition. Again this year, the alumni association will present four (4) scholarships at the 2020 Senior Awards Night in May. Recipients are also recognized at the annual FHS alumni banquet; this year the 127th annual gathering is Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 6:00pm in the Kreeger Elementary Gym.
The scholarship fund is maintained through the many donations received in memory of loved ones who either were graduates of FHS or who maintained strong connections to the schools such as teachers, coaches, bus driver, or friends of the school. Please feel free to make donations in any amount at any time during the year. Some send donations yearly; for some, it is a one-time donation.
Donations should be sent to Ed Helzerman, PO Box 446, Fowlerville, MI 48836. To be recognized in the 2020 program, a donation should reach Ed Helzerman by May 1st. Alumni board member & advertising co-chair Meghan Swain-Kuch can be contacted at 517-672-1747 or meganmswain@gmail.com if you wish to recognize family & friends by making a donation for either a business card size or a larger entry (ex. 1/4 page) rather than the traditional listing.
Your generosity will not only help maintain the scholarship program, but will help a graduating senior with college expenses. The FHS Alumni Association is a 501(c)(3) organization. It is the intention of the organization to establish a foundation grant once sufficient funds have been obtained.

Richard Allen Peckens, 88, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 7, 2020. As a medic, he jumped out of airplanes saving lives behind enemy lines.  Often referred to as the quiet professionals or guardian angels, Richard adhered to the Pararescueman motto of “These things we do that others may live.” After his military service he graduated from Michigan State University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Ag Economics where he met his bride of 63 years, Virginia Carson Peckens.
Together they built a life on the farm in Fowlerville where they had five children. After college he worked for Airway Underwriters, the Federal Land Bank, R.E. Peckens Oliver Dealership, and owned Peckens Realty and The Grand Agency in Fowlerville.  He farmed until he was 86 years old.
He had a passion for flying and earned his pilot’s license in 1954, enjoying a lifetime of flying with his family from east to west and north to south. Escaping a close call while flying over Lake Michigan and an emergency landing on the highway in Traverse City, Virginia decided ground school would be a good idea and learned how to land the plane, just in case.
He served on the Fowlerville Public School Board of Education, the Livingston County Aeronautical Facilities Board, was a member of the Fowlerville Rotary, a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion, and belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Fowlerville.

Beloved father to Kelly (Keith) Dotts and Shelly Tyrrell.  Adored grandfather to Deven, Brooke (Adam), Lauren (Brad), Derek and Kiara. He is survived by his sister Cleo Callahan and brother Gale (Shadoe) Sober, both of Howell.  Uncle to Tina, Autumn, Crystal and Wade.
Gary graduated from Hartland High School in 1961 and attended  Flint Community College up until 1967 when he joined the Air Force.  He served out of the Kincheloe Air Force Base in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula until his honorable discharge in 1971.  After the military Gary spent the remainder of his life in Livingston County, primarily in the Fowlerville area.  He was active in the Fowlerville Jaycees in the early 1970s and liked to umpire Little League games in his spare time when he could. He loved playing softball and did so for many years on various teams.
Gary was an avid sports fan.  He was a familiar face to local parents and players alike and a huge supporter of Fowlerville and Webberville sports.  He wore his ‘gold and purple’  with pride  and cheered along with families, whether his grandchildren were playing or not.  He loved his family deeply, but his pride and joy were his grandkids.  He beamed when he spoke of them and bragged every chance he got.  Gary was kind to everyone he met, and his absence will be deeply felt for years to come.

This is a major fundraiser for the committee, with the proceeds used to fund the fireworks, along with the parade and other activities, that are held in Fowlerville on Independence Day.
Contestants, usually numbering around 20 or more, will offer their specially-made entries—ranging from mild to extra hot and everything in between. Each and all promise to be interesting.
Those attending will taste-test these different chili recipes and vote on their favorites with a cash donation.
There’s a new addition at this year’s event. A Homemade Soup Contest will also being held. So if chili isn’t your ‘dish’, then you’re invited to join this part of the competition or try the various soup entries, with the same voting taking place.
A full bowl of chili or soup, along with a full salad bar and desserts are available for purchase.
Other activities include a 50-50 cash raffle, a silent auction, and several vendors will have booths set up, selling merchandise.
Contestants for the Chili and Soup cook-offs are still being accepted. If interested, the entry form can be found on our Facebook page, Livingston County Fireworks or by contacting Michelle Soli at MichelleSoli@yahoo.com or Brandon Denby at BDenby@livgov.com.     If you have any additional questions you can contact the Fowlerville 4th of July Committee on Facebook (Livingston County Fireworks) or our Chairman, Brandon Denby 517.540.8823 BDenby@Livgov.com
