 Douglas A. Bowman

    In the early morning of March 25, 2020, Douglas A. Bowman of Webberville MI went to be with his Lord and Savior. 

    He is survived by his wife of over 49 years, Jan Bowman; three loving children: Penny (Russ) Bowman, Terra (Eric) Fuller, and Douglas (Kelly) Bowman, Jr. He will also be missed by his four grandsons: Ean and Carter Fuller, Ted Schulte, and Chase Bowman.

   In Doug’s 66 years of life, he was in the United States Army for 38 years and worked for the Michigan Dept. of Transportation for 28 years. Doug had a very active life. He loved to run 5Ks, bowl, sky dive, scuba dive,  bungy jump, white water rafting, country dancing, and horses. Doug also put 20,000 miles on his motorcycle each year and for the last 10 years he enjoyed playing Pickleball.

   A Celebration of Life for Douglas Bowman will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020 from 1-4 p.m., with an Ice Cream Social at Wesleyan Family Life Church, 3720 Rowley Rd., Williamston MI 48895.

 Polish Oktoberfest Dinner will be available for curbside pick-up Oct. 17

   The Polish Oktoberfest Dinner at St. Agnes Catholic Church will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, although with a different scenario than usual. 

     Unable to hold its traditional sit-down dinner and the after-dinner dance music program due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Knights of Columbus will instead be making the Polish Oktoberfest Dinner available for curbside pick-up on Saturday, Oct. 17.

   The church is located at 855 E. Grand River, Fowlerville.

   A Pre-Order is required and must be made by Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 5 p.m. To order, call Liz Heslip at the parish office 517-223-8684 extension 313 or 517-304-1009.

   All orders must be picked up at a pre-arranged time on Oct. 17th betweeen 5-7p.m.

   The dinner, which costs $15 per person (cash or check only), includes Kapusta & Kielbasa (Sauerdraut & Kielbasa), Golabki (Stuffed Cabbage), 2 skewers of City Chicken, Roasted Red Potatoes and Green Beans, Rolls, and Dessert.

 Pathways Adult Education Workshop scheduled for Oct. 13 in Owosso

    Pathways Adult Education is hosting a free workshop to learn about the Pathways’ program and present information about studying and taking the GED. The next free monthly workshop will be Tuesday, October 13, from 10 – 11:15 am. It is in the Education and Social Science Building (formerly the Curwood Building) on the main campus of Baker College in Owosso, on the second floor (please enter using the south-facing door). Please wear a mask and bring a pen/pencil. Join us to start pursuing your educational goal. 

    The GED Testing Center is available only to Pathways’ students at this time.

 MSU Extension offering training sessions on Pantry Food Safety 

    Michigan State University Extension food safety educators will be hosting a live online webinar focusing on “Pantry Food Safety—It’s Your Job.”  This is a two-part series. 

     Part One of the series will cover the following topics why food safety in a food bank/pantry is important, handwashing, personal hygiene, cleaning and sanitizing, and receiving food product.  

     Part Two will cover a continuation of receiving food product, storage of food product, re-packaging, and the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Law. This webinar is based on current food safety and Michigan Food Code as it relates to food banks/and food pantries.      

     Participants are encouraged to ask their questions during the Q & A portion of the event. Food Safety Educators will be available for this session and will provide the most up-to-date research-based information. Participants who complete both sessions 1 & 2 will receive a pantry food safety training certificate.

     Organizations that register participants will receive incentives upon submission of evaluation.

 Community-Wide Women’s Bible Study at Family Impact Wellness Center

    A 6-week video-based study by Lysa TerKeurst entitled It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way is being offered at the Family Impact Wellness Center, which is located at 9430 W. Grand River just west of Fowlerville.  It will be held from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and will begin on October 21st.  We will be using social distancing.

     The focus of this timely study is on finding unexpected strength when tragedies and disappointments leave you shattered.  With solid biblical truth and gut-honest vulnerability, Lysa will teach how to get through painful situations and gain life-giving perspectives for our time here on earth.

    The cost for this class is $15, which covers both the participant guide (for notetaking during class as well as for each week’s personal studies) and Lysa’s 281-page hard-cover book that we’ll be using for group discussion.  Scholarships are available.

 Grief Share Seminar/Support Group reconvenes on Oct. 21

     Grief Share, which is sponsored by Family Impact Centers and held at the Family Impact Center Wellness Center located on 9430 W. Grand River just west of Fowlerville, is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 21, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. We will be meeting in person while practicing safe social distancing.

    This faith-based seminar/support group is for anyone who is grieving the loss of someone close.  It will run consecutively for 13 weeks except for November 18, when we will be offering the special session entitled Surviving the Holidays.

 Fowlerville District Library Upcoming Events

    The Fowlerville District Library building is open at regular hours and continuing to offercurbside service (highly recommended). In compliance with executive order No. 2020-147; face masks are required for all library patrons and staff as well as maintaining the social distancing of 6 feet. A limit of 12 patrons is allowed in the building at one time. Patrons entering the building are encouraged to make their visit as short as possible. Inkeeping with social distancing and cleaning guidelines, as well as to ensure the health and safety of FDL Patrons, the Library will have a limited number of computers availablefor patron use. There will be a strict time limit of one hour per day, per patron, for each computer. FDL’s Wi-Fi now reaches out in the side yard.

How to Use Curbside Service

    Step 1: You can make requests: by calling the Library directly, emailing us or make your holds through the FDL’s card catalog (Max 10 items)  --Not sure what you would like to read? Use our reader’s advisory at the desk, they can help! All you need is to give them a subject, author, or genre, and they will do the rest.

    Step 2: One hour after your request has been made, please come to the Library and park in the curbside pickup designated parking located in front of the side yard.

Step 3: From your car, call the Library and someone will come out with your requested materials.

Step 4: Please present your library card or driver's license and your materials will be given to you.

Reading to Bosco Through Zoom: Monday, October 5at 4pm –via - Zoom 

All Ages- Read to Bosco on Zoom! You can now reserve a time for your child to read to Fowlerville District Library's therapy dog! Each child will be given a 15 minute time slot to read to Bosco and must be preregistered. Registration is needed each week and spots are limited. Zoom invites will be sent out on Fridays. This event reoccurs every Monday.

Zoom Tea and Chocolate Writer’s Group: Wednesdays, September 30 – November 11 at 2:30pm –via–Zoom

Adults –This program currently meets online via Zoom and is open to new and experienced writers. Is your creative well running dry? Don’t know where to start? We take turns bringing in fun writing prompts at every meeting to get our creativity flowing. You will have a chance to talk to other writers, and If you want feedback on your work-in-progress this is the group for you!  Feel free to bring a 1-page sample of a current project if desired. Registration is required. This group meets every Wednesday for 7 weeks.

Dungeons and Dragons for Beginners: Thursdays, October 8 - December 17 at 2:30pm –via –Zoom

6th-12th Graders - Are you new to the game Dungeons and Dragons? Come meet with the library and friends on Zoom to learn the basics to play, how to fill out your character sheet, rules, and to play a few short adventures. Adults -Read Death in Ten Minutes: The Forgotten Life of Radical Suffragette Kitty Marion by Dr Fern Riddell with the Library. The participants signed up will get an opportunity to check out our pairing movie choice Suffragette and watch it at home. We will meet up virtually on Zoom to discuss the book and the movie. Registration is required with a $10 deposit and a valid email address, to receive a book and a Zoom link. Registration is done in person inside or through curbside service at the library. Books are limited and only available to one per household. Zoom links will be sent out the day before the program.
