VINA Dental holding ‘Stars, Stripes & Smiles’ fundraiser on March 21st

VINA Community Dental Center invites the community to attend its upcoming ‘Stars, Stripes & Smiles’ fundraising event, dedicated to raising funds for affordable dental care for underserved adults in Livingston County, with a special focus on veterans in need.

Event activities include dancing, music, a buffet dinner, silent auction, wine pull, 50/50 raffle, and entry into a door prize raffle for a $200 Minerva’s Salon certificate and a dinner for two at Pacific Rim. Individual tickets are $65.

Dress in casual, business casual, or red, white, and blue apparel. Don’t miss out on this chance to support a great cause while having fun!

A highlight of the event is the Honor a Veteran sponsorship, which allows individuals and businesses to pay tribute to veterans they wish to recognize. For a $100 donation, the name, rank, and military branch of an honored veteran will be prominently displayed at the event, in the program, and on the event website. This sponsorship is a meaningful way to recognize veterans while supporting a community cause.

Livingston County ‘Veteran of the Year’ & ‘Auxiliary Member of the Year’ for 2026 announced

The Livingston County Veterans Council proudly announces its 2026 ‘Veteran of the Year’ and ‘Auxiliary Member of the Year’. They are Don “Poppa” Lang of Howell American Legion Post 141 and Sheryl Pitt of the Pinckney American Legion Auxiliary Unit 419.

Don “Papa Don” Lang is a U.S. Army veteran whose decade of service included Vietnam intelligence operations, cryptography, instruction at the National Cryptology School, and high-level analysis of SR-71 and satellite imagery in Europe. Rising from enlisted soldier to commissioned officer, he carried that same leadership into a successful corporate career with Xerox, Canon, Panasonic, Voice Stream, and T-Mobile.

A lifelong champion of veterans and youth, he organized major international Legion and NATO events, earned the Order of King Leopold for supporting NATO families, and now serves as Americanism Chair for Post 141, leading oratorical, Boys State, ROTC, and West Point mentorship programs. Deeply active in local Chambers of Commerce and community service, he has been honored as Livingston County ‘Veteran of the Month’ and Post 141 ‘Vietnam Veteran of the Month’.

Sheryl Pitt was recognized for her exceptional fundraising—bringing in more than $10,000 each year through her steady 50/50 work at every Post function—combined with her hands-on service to Veterans and the community, from volunteering at the Moving Wall to supporting blood drives and maintaining memorials, makes her an invaluable member of Unit 419.

Rooted in a strong military family and shaped by her compassionate work with special-needs students, she extends that same spirit of service by involving her grandchildren, including a Junior member, in Auxiliary activities and modeling what true commitment to Veterans looks like.

Voted in by their peers, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Don “Poppa” Lang and Sheryl Pitt on this well-earned honor.

Donations sought for Fowlerville High School Alumni Scholarship Fund

It’s that time of year, time to consider making a donation to the Fowlerville High School Alunni Scholarship Fund. For over 50 years, donations received for this Fund have enabled the FHS Alumni Association to award scholarships to members of the current graduating class.

According to FHS Alumni president, Judy Epley Recker, usually donations are in memory of loved ones, classmates as well as individuals who were connected to the school such as faculty, custodians, school board members, bus drivers and coaches—someone who played a role in the growth and development of the students.

Donations are recognized in both the Alumni Program given out at the annual banquet and a published list appearing in the Fowlerville News & Views. The FHS Alumni Association is a registered 501(c)(3) organization. Donations are accepted year round and can be sent to the Fowlerville High School Alumni, PO Box 446, Fowlerville, MI 48836. To be included in this year’s program, donations must be received by May 15th. Questions may be directed to treasurer Meghan Swain-Kuch at 517-672-1747 or meghanmswain@gmail.com.

You may also recognize family and friends and/or your business by submitting a business card. An advertising entry may replace the traditional listing. Your generosity not only helps manintain the scholarship program but will help a graduating senior with college-trade school expenses.

Save the date!! Saturday, June 6, 2026 is the 132nd FHS Alumni banquet and gathering.

Christopher Candela announces run for Livingston County Circuit Court Judge

Genoa Township resident Christopher Candela has announced his candidacy for Livingston County Circuit Court Judge. The position will replace Judge Susan Geddis, who retires at the end of this year.

Candela, 30, currently serves as a Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Eaton County under prosecutor and current attorney general candidate Doug Lloyd. With extensive experience in appellate and circuit court litigation, Candela said “his dedication to strict adherence to the law and philosophical belief that personal views and agendas be left out of the courtroom makes him an excellent candidate for this year’s judicial election.”

“I am running because our community deserves another judge who will apply the law as written, respect the separate roles of government, and put public safety and accountability first,” said Candela. “Adhering to the law without bias is essential to maintaining public trust in the courts.”

The Wayne State University undergrad and graduate of Michigan State University College of Law stated that his career has focused on the careful application of the law – both at the trial and appellate levels. In his announcement, Candela said that his experience regarding extensive motion practice, appellate advocacy, and advising on legally-complex and precedent-setting matters have well-prepared him for the duties of being a circuit court judge.

Candela emphasized that his decision to run is grounded in a long-term commitment to the Livingston County community.

“My wife and I made a deliberate decision to build our lives and careers here,” he said. “The decisions made in the Livingston County Circuit Court shape the direction of our community for years to come. I take that responsibility very seriously.”

For more information about Christopher Candela and his campaign, visit www.candelaforjudge.com.

Fowlerville Community Schools expands investment in early childhood education

With the opening earlier this month of the former H.T. Smith Elementary as the new Early Childhood Development Center, Fowlerville Community Schools is continuing its “strong investment in early childhood education.”

School officials noted that this investment includes the renovation of the Smith building, expanded preschool opportunities in the larger space, and also new leadership dedicated to supporting students from their very first classroom experience.

“Thanks to planning and the continued support of the Fowlerville community, the district has renovated the former elementary building to increase enrollment capacity for Little Glad Early Childhood,” they pointed, adding that “The updated space allows the district to serve more families while providing a welcoming, age-appropriate learning environment designed specifically for young learners.

“Early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong success,” said Matt Stuard, Superintendent. “By expanding Little Glad Early Childhood and strengthening the transition to kindergarten at Fowlerville Elementary, we are ensuring our youngest learners start their educational journey with confidence and support.”

As part of the district’s commitment to access and opportunity, GSRP (Great Start Readiness Program) preschool offerings have expanded, including Free Pre-K for 4-year-olds for qualifying families. This expansion allows more children to benefit from high-quality early learning experiences that focus on literacy, social-emotional development, and kindergarten readiness. In addition, the district offers both tuition-based junior preschool (ages 18 months-3 years) and preschool programs (ages 3-5 years.)

To further support families and students, the district has hired Molly Moulton, as the new principal for Little Glad Early Childhood. With deep ties to the community and a strong background in early childhood education, Molly will play a key role in creating a seamless transition from preschool into kindergarten at the district’s new elementary school.

“We want the move from preschool to kindergarten to feel fun and exciting for kids and families,” said Molly Moulton, Principal. “By aligning our curriculum so learning continues smoothly, building relationships early and staying connected with families, we can help every child feel comfortable, confident, and ready to start kindergarten at Fowlerville Elementary School.”

School officials noted that this expansion builds on the district’s recent opening of its new elementary school last January — a project made possible through the support of voters who approved a community bond. The state-of-the-art facility provides students with a world-class learning environment, complete with modern classrooms, all new furnishings, and cutting-edge technology designed to support 21st-century learning.

Today, elementary students “are thriving in bright, collaborative spaces that encourage creativity, exploration, and innovation.”

“From preschool through elementary school, our community has made it clear that investing in children is a priority,” said Stuard. “We are incredibly grateful for that support and proud to provide facilities and programs that reflect the high expectations we have for our students.”

Families interested in enrolling in Little Glad Early Childhood or registering their student for Kindergarten for the 2026-27 school year should visit the district website or contact building leadership at 517.223.6480 (Little Glad Early Childhood) or 517.223.6008 (Fowlerville Elementary.)

Fowlerville Swap Meet will bring bargain hunters back to the fairgrounds

Almost 200 vendors and thousands of vintage and classic car enthusiasts are expected at the 53rd Annual Vintage Motor Car Club of America (VMCCA) Great Lakes Region Swap Meet to be held on Saturday, May 2 at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds, 8800 W. Grand River Ave. in Fowlerville.

Since moving to the fairgrounds over 40 years ago, the event has become an annual rite of spring for bargain hunters seeking old car parts, automotive literature and memorabilia, tools, hardware, antiques and much more.

Vendors from as many as 17 different states, including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and the greater Midwest, will once again converge on the event’s traditional “first weekend of May”.

Considering the size of the open fairgrounds field (over 300 spaces are available), booth sizes are a generous 15’ x 30’, at a cost of $30 each in advance (early registrations must be received no later than April 18) or $40 each after April 18 and at the gate on May 2, which opens to dealers for set-up at 7:00am.

The one-day swap meet is open to the general public from 8:00am-5:00pm, with a gate fee of $5 for anyone over 12 (kids free when accompanied by an adult). A car corral for selling vehicles is also available for $20. Local Livingston County concessionaire Tony’s Dogs will be onsite all day with hot and cold food and drinks.
