As an avid weaver, she would raise sheep, spin wool and use a loom to do weaving. For several years she demonstrated weaving at the Fowlerville Fair using an antique Loom.

Lou was an active member of the Marr Community Bible Church since 1954. Along with her husband they traveled across the United States as RVer’s, volunteering full time for missions and youth camps from 1989 until 2008, when her health required them to leave their vagabond lifestyle. Visitation will be Sunday, January 28, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, MacDonald’s Chapel of Howell. Burial will be in Sanford Cemetery.  Livingston County Genealogical Society holding ‘zoom’ meeting on Feb. 1st

The Livingston County Genealogical Society will meet via zoom on Thursday, Feb. 1st. Program speaker is Thomas Koselka – ‘Who you gonna call? WIKIs in Family History.’

When we answer one research question, one or more new questions arise. How do we handle all the research locations, record-sets, and types of documents? In this session, we will explore features of the FamilySearch Wiki and why it should be in your toolbox. We will examine Wiki search techniques, the purpose of the Wiki, notifications of changes, how you can adopt a page, and how to contribute your expertise to make the Wiki a more robust tool to help genealogists. FamilySearch is not the only Wiki out there; we will also look at more specialized Wikis that offer guidance with more advanced questions.

Tom Koselka has been researching his family history since the middle 1980s. Tom is currently the President of the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research. He was a Past-President of the Michigan Genealogical Council and the Dearborn Genealogical Society. Additionally, he serves as a board member, mentor, and advisor to several Michigan genealogical societies. Tom is also a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, Ontario Ancestors, and the National Genealogical Society. Retired from Dearborn Music, Tom lives in Westland, with his genealogist wife, Valerie.

A link to this virtual meeting may be found on our Facebook page for the Livingston County Genealogical Society a few days before the Feb. 1st meeting. All are welcome."

Cribbage players invited to join weekly tournament at Webberville church

A small group of cribbage players has been holding a weekly tournament on Mondays at the Webberville United Methodist Church which is located at South M-52 and Holt Road. Play starts at 6:30pm.

In an effort to expand the event, they’re inviting any “Yoopers from Fowlerville” to play with them. They’re calling themselves the “Downstaters of Webberville.”

Not to leave anyone out, they’re also welcoming “Wanabee Yoopers and Downstaters” to take part.

Fred Moon, one of the regulars, noted that cribbage is popular in the Upper Peninsula, hence the reference to Yoopers.

“We started playing six years ago at the Webberville Library, with Betty Juntenen organizing the competition,” he noted. “We played at noon and this worked for awhile until the warm weather caused some of the guys to go back to work. We then moved to the Methodist Church, changed the time to the evening, and have been playing since then.”

Moon described the competition as “friendly, with players helping each other when someone misses points.”

The reward for a win is $1 and the penalty for a ‘skunk’ is $2. They play on tournament boards, meaning 60 pegs up and back and furnish all that is necessary.

They play five games each Monday.

Any questions, call Fred Moon at 517-521-5622.

Consumers Energy offers tips to help households reduce winter heating bills & how to get help

With frigid cold draped across Michigan this past week, Consumers Energy is highlighting programs, dollars and ways to help Michiganders lower and get help with their energy bills.

Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s vice president of customer experience, said Consumers Energy is continuing to look out for customers even after restoring power across the state over the weekend.

“Natural gas costs less than half as much as it did last year. Still, Consumers Energy is looking out for our friends and neighbors, to be sure they stay safe and comfortable in their homes as temperatures have plunged below zero,” Snyder said. “You should know you can take action to reduce your energy bill, and you can find help by reaching out with just a phone call.”

Snyder shared these tips to reduce energy waste. Learn more at ConsumersEnergy.com/coldweather.

--Have your heating system tuned and inspected by a service professional. Heat losses from a poorly maintained system can range between 1-2 percent a year.

--Clean or replace your furnace filter often during the heating season. If your furnace can “breathe” more easily, it will use less energy.

--Dial your thermostat down at night and add an extra blanket for warmth. Adjusting your home’s temperature by even 1 degree can lower your heating bill by 1 to 3 percent.

--Make sure your attic, basement, garage and exterior doors are closed to prevent cold drafts from getting in and heat from getting out. --Schedule a Consumers Energy home energy analysis. The free analysis offers ways you can take action to save energy at home.

Snyder also encouraged people who need help to contact 2-1-1. The free service connects Michiganders with nonprofits to find help with basic needs, from energy bills to food and shelter. Visit ConsumersEnergy.com/assistance to learn more.

Other sources of help:

--Apply for State Emergency Relief (SER) at michigan.gov/mibridges.

--Contact Consumers Energy at 800-477-5050 to make payment arrangements.

--Apply for a Home Heating Credit at michigan.gov/treasury.

“We know that asking for help can feel intimidating, but it’s vital for people to understand assistance is available right here in our communities, regardless of the situation,” Snyder said. “We’ll know we’re making a difference this winter when everyone finds the helping hand to get them through challenges.”

 Ruth M. Davis

Ruth M. Davis, age 85 years, died on January 4, 2024, at her home, The Summit in Mesa, Arizona. She was born on February 8, 1938, in rural Handy Township, Livingston County, Michigan, to Irving F. and Ethel M. (Jones) Utter. She attended a country school until the fifth grade when the Utter family moved into Fowlerville. She attended Fowlerville Schools and graduated in June 1956.

On February 22, 1964, Ruth was joined in marriage to Charles Blascovich, a widower with three young children, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Fowlerville, Michigan. Within the year, they moved to Riverside, California, and welcomed a fourth child into their family in 1967. Twenty-two years later, the marriage ended in divorce. Returning to Fowlerville in 1996 to attend the 40th anniversary of her high school graduation, she and Richard Davis rekindled their high school relationship. The following year they were married and, when Dick retired, they moved to Arizona. He passed away there in 2002.

Surviving are four beloved children: Doreen (Robert) Redinger of Fowlerville, Anthony (Amber) Blascovich of Fowlerville, Angelo (Patricia) Blascovich of Lake Elsinore, California, and Catherine Downing of Bloomfield. New Mexico. Also surviving are two step-daughters: Cheryl Davis and Susan Davis, both of Howell, Michigan. Ruth’s seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren were added blessings. Her only sibling, Frank C. Utter, passed away in 2012, and his widow Ann continues to live in Fowlerville.

Ruth was a strong woman of faith for whom life was an adventure, a gift from God. Devoted to her family, a friend to everyone, she was always eager to learn something new. Her homemaking skills were unequaled and she was an avid Arizona Diamondbacks baseball fan. She was a member of St. George’s Catholic Church in Apache Junction.

While still in high school she worked in Woods’ Drug Store in Fowlerville and after graduation began a clerical career in a local factory. Over the years she continued to build on her work experiences by serving as a bank teller, a dental office receptionist, and a Mary Kay cosmetics consultant. She also co-partnered a catering business, was a community home sales representative, and conducted several Bible study groups for many years.

Traveling throughout the US and Europe provided her with many treasured memories. It also introduced her to a French family with whom she lived for a year and later revisited several times. One special honor was her selection as the Queen for Fowlerville’s 125th Anniversary celebration in 1961. Twenty-five years later she returned to town and, wearing the same dress, participated in the 150th Anniversary celebration.

A funeral mass was offered on January 12, 2024, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Fowlerville, with burial at Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be directed to Hospice of the Valley, Administrative Office, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85014, or to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Herrmann Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com

Community Connect 2024 to be held at Brighton church on   Feb. 3rd

The Livingston County Homeless Continuum of Care is reminding residents to mark their calendars for Community Connect 2024, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3rd at 2|42 Community Church in Brighton. We’re busy planning the final details of the event, but look forward to bringing the community another day of connection with services, free resources, and plenty of helpful information. Everyone in our community who could benefit from these services and resources is welcome to attend.

“We had a phenomenal event last year with record-breaking attendance and are looking forward to another day of connecting residents with services,” said Amy Johnston, the Community Collaborative Planner for the Livingston County Human Services Collaborative Body.

The event will offer many valuable resources for Livingston County residents. Some of the free services will include health screenings, haircuts, legal services, and information on topics like housing, utility programs, and basic needs. Many free resources will be available as well.

Those who attend can pick up personal care items, winter gear, laundry detergent, diapers, food, and more. No registration is needed to attend, and families are more than welcome! (Please note that childcare will not be provided.)

Thank you to 2|24 Community Church for hosting the event and the following sponsors who make Community Connect possible, Livingston Sunrise Rotary, Brighton Masonic Lodge, and the Livingston County Homeless Continuum of Care.

Finally, volunteers always help make this day possible. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available from event set-up and tear down, traffic directors, and more. Head over to Volunteer Livingston at https://www.volunteerlivingston.org/need/index?agency_id=81231 to sign up and help out.

Livingston County Health Department to Offer Free Radon Test Kits this January for ‘Radon Action Month’

January is ‘National Radon Action Month’ – an opportune time for Livingston County residents to test for radon in their homes, a health risk facing millions of Americans. Because families spend more time indoors during the winter months, January is a good time to test for this radioactive, invisible, and odorless gas. Exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year are radon-related. Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon enters buildings through openings in the foundation floor or walls (sump openings, crawlspaces, floor/wall joints, cracks, etc.). Radon can become trapped in buildings and lead to elevated and harmful radon levels.

One in eight Michigan homes is likely to have an elevated radon level. According to a study conducted by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, radon is present in elevated levels in about 40% of Livingston County homes. Radon is tasteless, odorless, and colorless, and it has no warning symptoms (it does not cause headaches, nausea, fatigue, etc.). Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk for health issues caused by radon.

The Livingston County Health Department (LCHD) has short-term radon test kits available free of charge during the month of January. Test kits can be picked up at the Environmental Health Division office, located at 2300 East Grand River Avenue, Howell.

Kits may also be picked up at participating local city and township offices, while supplies last: City of Brighton, Brighton Township, Cohoctah Township, Conway Township, Deerfield Township, Genoa Township, Green Oak Township, Hamburg Township, Hartland Township, City of Howell, Iosco Township, Marion Township, Oceola Township, Putnam Township, Tyrone Township, and Unadilla Township.

Test kits are being offered for free at LCHD through the month of January but may also be purchased throughout the year. Kits are also available for purchase at local hardware stores, home improvement centers, or directly from a radon test kit provider.

The EPA recommends that houses with radon levels of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or more be fixed to prevent accumulation of the gas indoors. Radon can be corrected by qualified contractors for an estimated cost of $1,500 to $3,000.

For more radon information, contact LCHD at (517) 546-9858, or the Michigan Indoor Radon Program at 1-800-RADON-GAS. Radon information can also be accessed online at https://milivcounty.gov/environmental-health/housing-indoor-air/radon/ or www.michigan.gov/radon.
