Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum running for Michigan Secretary of State
Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum has announced she is running for Michigan Secretary of State office. The current officeholder, Jocelyn Benson, is term-limited and is now seeking to become the next Michigan Governor.
Byrum was elected as Ingham County Clerk in 2012 after serving in the Michigan Legislature She is a Democrat.
“Now, I want to go toe-to-toe against election deniers who want to sew chaos across the state and continue my track record of making government more accessible, transparent, and service-oriented as Secretary of State,” said Byrum in her annoucement. “With attacks against the constitution and our core rights challenged, I believe now is the time for me to step up and continue to protect our rights, defend our democracy, and provide excellent service to the people of Michigan.”
The only other announced candidate for the office is fellow Democrat Aghogho Edevbie, the current Deputy Secretary of State. In his annoucement Edevbie said that “Michigan will be on the front lines of the fight for our Democracy, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. There’s work to do, Michigan—and it’s time to get going."
The nominee will be decided at the Michigan Democratic Party State Convention next year. The term is for four years, with a maximum of eight years under the current law.
