State Ag Department urges the safe & effective use of pesticides

for gardening and landscaping

As warmer weather approaches, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is reminding the public to safely use pesticides when gardening and landscaping. A pesticide is any substance intended to prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate a pest. Insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides, and disinfectants are pesticides.

“When used correctly, pesticides are an effective tool to help control, destroy, and repel destructive pests such as insects, weeds, rodents, germs, and plant disease,” said Brian Verhougstraete, MDARD’s Pesticide Section Manager. “If applying pesticides, always read and follow the label directions and use the recommended personal protective equipment.” If hiring an applicator, choose a firm licensed by MDARD. Licensed firms meet the required financial and experience requirements and employ certified pesticide applicators who have passed MDARD’s proficiency examinations. Their training and experience will help prevent accidental pesticide misuse as well as help prevent harm from occurring to humans, pets, livestock, and the environment.

“Be aware of online advertisements and social media posts promoting the sale of unregistered pesticides, particularly those that claim to be 100% safe or all natural,” added Verhougstraete. “Unregistered pesticides are not proven to be safe or effective and are unlikely to meet MDARD’s or the Environmental Protection Agency’s requirements.”

For additional information on MDARD’s Pesticide and Plant Pesticide Management Division, visit Michigan.gov/MDARD.

VINA Spring Auction being held virtually on April 14-17

VINA Community Dental Center is counting down the days to the VINA Spring “Out of Quarantine” Silent Auction, taking place virtually from April 14 thru April 17.

The silent auction features a variety of auction items providing experiences and trips to safely “spring” back into the world as the weather warms up and more people receive vaccinations. For those not quite ready to venture out into the world, there are plenty of local and staycation packages.

Bidders must register to bid and will receive text and email updates about the auction. Auction items fall into three categories: local, Michigan and national.

Some of the Michigan auction packages include a Detroit Tigers package with tickets and signed memorabilia, a four-day stay in a beautiful lakefront cottage near Tawas and a wine & dine weekend in Traverse City.

Local auction items include a gourmet dinner for eight in your home, a couple of golf packages at exclusive courses and staycation packages for those not quite ready to be out and about.

The national auction item is an unforgettable experience that will leave the winning bidder feeling recharged both inside and out. VINA will announce the national auction item later as the auction start date nears.

Sponsorships are available now, with six different sponsorship levels providing various marketing benefits. To register to bid, purchase a sponsorship and preview the auction items, visit the auction website: cbo.io/bidapp/index.php?slug=vina

All proceeds from the fundraiser benefit VINA Community Dental Center and the thousands of low-income, uninsured Livingston County residents who rely on the clinic. VINA provides dental visits for $25 and hygiene visits for $10 to alleviate the financial burden of routine dental care for the underserved members of our community.

VINA announced dates for two more fundraisers happening safely in-person later this year. The Golf Outing will be at Lakelands Golf & Country Club on July 19 and The Tailgate will be at Crystal Gardens on October 14.

Fowlerville taking part in tornado siren test Wednesday,

March 24

Fowlerville, along with the rest of Livingston County, will take part in the Statewide Tornado Drill scheduled for this Wednesday, March 24 at 1:00 PM. During the drill, there will be a tornado siren test, an initial warning from the Livingston County Public Alerting System (LCPAS) to the public and County buildings, and an “all clear” message sent out via LCPAS after 20 minutes.

The drill is a proactive effort to enable residents to become more resilient during severe weather or tornado emergencies by practicing and discussing emergency communication and emergency sheltering. Residents as well local businesses and organizations are encouraged to take part in the drill to practice their severe weather and tornado procedures.

“It is important to review emergency plans with family and co-workers,” says Livingston County Emergency Manager, Therese Cremonte. “Emergencies, such as a tornado, can happen with little or no warning. If the required safety actions are discussed and practiced before an emergency, the actions will be almost automatic during the emergency, when time to react may be limited.”

Fowlerville Fire Chief Bob Feig said the local department plans to activate the warning siren at that time, given that Michigan is approaching the tornado and severe thunderstorm season.

DDA proposal selected as finalist in ‘Put Your Town on the Map’ contest

A proposal to paint murals on the side of buildings in the Fowlerville commercial district as a way of beautifying the area and also drawing visitors to the community has been selected as one of ten finalists in the ‘Put Your Town on the Map!’ Contest that is sponsored by Consumers Energy.

The contest is limited to small towns with a populationup to 10,000.

A total of $50,000 in grants is being given out by the public utility company: $25,000, $15,000, and $10,000 respectively.

The proposal had been previously presented to the Fowlerville Downtown Development Authority (DDA) as a possibly project by Connie Shear. She is the Handy Township treasurer and represents that municipality on the DDA board.

Shear had learned of murals that were painted on commercial buildings in the City of Jackson and have become a tourist attraction. She felt that doing something similar in Fowlerville would help enhance the community.

Shear subsequently entered the Consumers Energy contest.

The ten finalists will make their presentations at the Small Town and Rural Development Conference, held virtually on April 13-14, with the three winners then being named

“The Put Your Town on the Map competition aims to reward innovative ideas that attract visitors to downtowns, focus on housing, education or employment, create community pride and more,” said Roger Curtis, Consumers Energy’s vice president of public affairs, adding that “Consumers Energy is committed to ensuring Michigan's communities of all sizes are growing and thriving, and we're excited to provide financial help to turn original ideas into reality."

He married the love of his life, Virginia (Elmer) on July 27, 1963; they celebrated 57 years together. They include her five sisters: Joan Bebee, Nancy (Rob Firebaugh), Denise Russell, Sue Russell, and Yvonne Simonyi, and two brothers: her twin Tom (Mary Beth) Russell and Bruce M. (Tina) Russell. She is also survived by many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins who will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her father, C. Bruce Russell.

 Patricia Carol Sicher

Born July 8, 1941

Died February 24, 2021

Patricia Carol Sicher, 79 of Fowlerville passed away on February 24, 2021. Born in "Fire Creek", West Virginia on July 8, 1941. She was a homemaker and worked at the Bowling Center in Fowlerville years ago, as well as the Frank’s IGA with the Curtis Family.

She loved her trips to Shear Image Salon and visiting with the "Girls" as well as her trips to Doe Valley Salon and visiting with Karen. She was a hard-working person with a "Get It Done" attitude. We will miss her smile, advice and trips to breakfast on the weekend for a good cup of black coffee.

Fire Creek, West Virginia was an old coaling mining town that is non existent today. And "yes" she was a coal miner’s daughter.

This paper is not big enough to explain how wonderful she was and how much she loved to talk and see all of you. A celebration of life will be held in the summer. A notice will be in the paper.

Thank you,

Her Loving Son, Tim

July 4th Committee’s Chili & Soup Cook-Off to be held at fairgrounds

The Fowlerville 4th of July Committee has announced plans for its 16th Annual Chili & Soup Cook-Off, noting that this major fundraiser to be held Saturday, April 24 , from 4-7p.m. at the Fowlerville Family Fairgrounds. All proceeds from the event go towards paying for the fireworks and other costs incurred in putting on the community’s July 4th celebration.

Both the Cook-Off and the July 4th festivities were cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and public-health restrictions that had been enacted.

The Cook-Off, in past years, has been held at the VFW Post. However, with limits on how many people can attend an indoor gathering still in place, the committee approached fair officials about holding an outside event at their location.

“The committee is very grateful to the Fowlerville Fair Board for making this event possible by allowing us to offer the Cook-Off at the fairgrounds where we’ll have enough room for social distancing and still be able to put on a fun event,” said Brandon Denby, the committee chair.

Another major change is offering soup in additon to the chili menu. Local professional and hobby chefs can compete in either category with 18 quarts of their favorite chili or soup in a variety of interesting categories.

Participation is by advanced registration only and registration is limited. To receive an Entry Form or for more information, please contact Bdenby@livgov.com or by phone at 517 540-8823, or Michellsoli@yahoo.com
