Williamston Theatre presents moving love story with a twist

Williamston Theatre continues its 2023-2024 season with Bright Half Life by Tanya Barfield, a moving love story with a twist. Performances begin Thursday, April 11 and run through Sunday, May 19. Tickets are now on sale.

Bright Half Life shares the four-and-a-half-decade love story of Vicky and Erica, who meet, fall in love, and go through all the trials and tribulations of marriage and building a family. It’s a conventional love story told in an unconventional way – it unfolds through yesterday, today, and tomorrow . . . just not in that order. Pulitzer Prize finalist Tanya Barfield has created a theatrical, time-bending play about love, heartbreak, and the infinite moments that make a relationship. Contains mature content and language.

The Hartland Audubon Nature Club looks forward to Bob Kramer’s presentation of the flora and fauna of South Africa and Botswana on April 2, at 7pm. Bob, a long-time member of the Nature Club, is a world-traveler with well-honed bird identification skills. He will amuse us with riveting stories of his adventures in the Kalahari Desert and wilderness of Southern Africa, home to the colorful rollers and the world’s largest land birds.

Open Class Home Arts

When you hear the word “class”, what immediately springs to mind?

Leaving the sociopolitical interpretation to the pundits, most of us associate “class” with schooling, education, a group of students…

Which explains the confusion surrounding the phrase “Open Class Home Arts.”

I’ve fielded many questions recently regarding which classes we’re teaching at the Fair, and how to register to be a student. But Open Class actually refers to our County fair’s competitive, exhibition classes, open to all Michigan residents over the age of 5 (no memberships or affiliations required!) They’re the classes in which projects are entered, judged, and exhibited throughout Fair week.

The confusion is understandable… and, as it turns out, inspiring!

County Fairs are legendary for educating, passing on skills and knowledge, and encouraging new standards of excellence. Why shouldn’t the Open Home Arts offer a learning component to help exhibitors improve their game, year after year?

Many of our 2024 Open Class Home Arts judges hail from educational fields, and love the idea of sharing constructive feedback. That’s why, this year, we’re introducing Judges’ Scorecards that will be filled out by our judges for each Open Home Arts entry. It’s like a mini-education on a page, containing criteria and critiques that you can use to improve your entries for next year’s Fowlerville Fair.

But we’re not stopping there! Home Arts aren’t a novelty to be trotted out at Fair time, then shelved ‘til next year. They are living crafts; we use them in our daily lives, and we enjoy the ways in which they bring us value. These relevant skills are, by their very nature, designed to be passed down and shared with others. So, let’s do just that!

Southeastern Livingston County Recreation Authority (SELCRA) has generously offered to host a Fowlerville Fair Open Home Arts class series for youth and adults, beginning this Spring, with a portion of proceeds donated toward supporting the Open Class Home Arts program. Taught by skilled community members, these instructional classes will include Home Arts skills and projects that you and your children can enter in this year’s Fair… and enjoy for a lifetime.

Classes will be announced on SELCRA’s website (www.selcra.com) and our “Fowlerville Fair Open Class Home Arts” Facebook group. Stay tuned!

Are you interested in teaching a class in your favorite art or craft? We’re currently looking for instructors in fine arts, photography, needlecraft, fiber arts, folk arts, plants, robotics, woodcraft, and much more. Prior teaching experience is helpful, but not necessary - just a love for your craft and for sharing that joy with others. Let’s keep these skills alive!  Fowlerville Fair collecting unwanted shoes & boots as fundraiser for new livestock pens

If you wear shoes or boots we need your help! The youth showing at the Fowlerville Fair are working to secure funds to get new pens for goats, sheep, and swine and they are asking everyone who wears shoes to help them.

Please consider donating your new, gently worn or used shoes or boots in support of the kids who need new pens for their animals during fair week. The current goat, sheep, and swine pens need to be updated and we also need more, so the fair community is working to gather shoes and boots as a fundraiser.

We are looking for all kinds of shoes: sneakers, boots, dress shoes, work boots, casual shoes, sandals and athletic shoes. When you clean out those closets getting ready for spring, make those hard decisions and turn those unwanted shoes into new pens for our youth!

Not only are you providing funds towards the new pens, you are also cutting down on landfill space needed, while providing a business opportunity for the underserved in other countries. The shoes donated will be refurbished and provided to families across the world to be used to start their own businesses and get much needed shoes to their communities.

Our shoe drive wraps up May 1st, so do not wait to clean that closet, garage or even your car for those unneeded shoes. To participate, you can drop off shoes at one of the donation sites listed below:

The Fowlerville Family Fair Youth Show will take place from July 22 to July 27, 2024, at the Fowlerville Fairgrounds. The youth show is open to all youth ages 5 to 21 who are members of the Fowlerville Junior Agricultural Society or are members of a Livingston County 4-H club or

FFA chapter.

The Fowlerville Family Fair is one of the oldest and largest fairs in Michigan, celebrating its 138th year in 2024. The fair offers something for everyone, with carnival rides, games, food, music, fireworks, tractor pulls, demolition derbies, rodeos, and more. The fair also showcases the best of Livingston County, with exhibits, competitions, and demonstrations of agriculture, arts, crafts, and science.  LuAnn Margaret Hacker

LuAnn Margaret Hacker of Fowlerville, MI passed away at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital on March 12, 2024, at 69 years of age. LuAnn was born January 23, 1955, to Howard and Dorothy (O'Brien) Hacker in Howell, MI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Howard, her brother Craig, and her nephew Kip Hacker. She is survived by brother Michael (Anita) Hacker, sister Verta (Michael) Beaudet, brother James Hacker, and brother Steven Hacker; three sister-in-laws: Karin Hacker, Sharalene Hacker and Sally Hacker. She also is survived by nieces Christine, Jacklyn, Stacey, Shay, Torin, Madison and nephews Todd, Craig, Kevin, Keenan and Mackenzie Hacker; and several great nieces and nephews. Also survived by her close friend Theresa Hamilton and many cousins and numerous friends.

LuAnn had the greatest capacity for being loving and caring for others, taking care of people and pets everyday of her life. LuAnn graduated from Howell High School in 1973 and spent 35 years at International Paper Container Company where she retired from in 2010. LuAnn will be terribly missed by all of her family and friends. She was fun and always helpful to anyone.

Visitation was taking place on March 23, 2024, from 11:00am-1:00pm. at Herrmann Funeral Home. LuAnn would appreciate Memorial Contributions to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital. Online condolences may be expressed at pjherrmannfuneralhome.com.

 Larry Turchi

Larry Turchi, age 82, passed away on March 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Larry was born on June 16, 1941 to Louis and Edna Turchi in Ann Arbor, MI. They both preceded him in death. He married the love of his life, Bessie Ward, on March 23, 1963. Larry retired from Ford Motor Company in 1991 and enjoyed camping with his family and visiting battlefield memorials throughout his life. He especially enjoyed spending time with his Children, Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his Wife Bessie, Son Richard (Lynn) Turchi and Daughter Sherry (Halsey) Pierson—all of Fowlerville. He is also survived by his Grandchildren/Great Grandchildren: Bessie Hicks (Jacob, Adam & Aaron), James Turchi (Kylie & Skylar), Jessica Bergum (Hailey, Riley & Annie), Stacia Turchi ( Harley), Pat Turchi (Jayden, Ayden & Clarissa), Alicia Tresik (Gauge & Peyton) and Nick Turchi. He was an outstanding brother-in-law and friend to Michael (Jackie) Ward, David (Janet) Ward, Linda Pyzik, Patsy (Dwayne) Carter and Serena McGill and is survived as well by many special nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, any donations are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association. Cremation has already taken place.

 Gary Leon Christoson

2/25/1940 -3/16/2024

Gary Christoson, age 84, stepped from earth into heaven on March 16, 2024, surrounded by the family he cherished.

Gary Leon Christoson was born in the Pontiac, Michigan home of his parents, Clifton and Pearle Christoson, along with his twin brother Jerry Lee, on February 25, 1940. After graduating from Waterford Township High School in 1958, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky from 1959-1961.

Later, as a student at Campbellsville College in Kentucky, Gary heard the gospel and received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. There he also met the love of his life, Lillian Carol Smith, whom he married on September 21, 1963.

Gary worked in quality engineering at Ford Motor Company for 32 years, while raising his three children in West Bloomfield. He was the model family man who worked hard, provided well, and created decades of memories with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing, always with family or friends. He also enjoyed horseback riding, specifically on their centennial farm near Tecumseh. Gary was a proficient do-it-yourselfer – whether it was house projects, car repairs, or the impressive restoration of his classic ’46 Ford pick-up. Gary was quick to make a joke, but quicker to offer a word of encouragement or wisdom.

In 2003, Gary and Lillian relocated to Livingston County to live near their son’s family and invest in the lives of their grandchildren. They became snowbirds in southern Arizona for 13 winters, enjoying the sunshine with friends between visits to their daughter’s family in New Mexico and their son’s family in California. It’s no surprise that Gary’s favorite Bible verse was 3John 4, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”

Gary put his faith in Jesus Christ over 60 years ago; and every year since, his relationship with his Savior deepened in devotion, knowledge, and authenticity. For the past 20 years, Gary was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Howell where he served as an usher, greeter, and more.

Gary inspired many during his decade-long fight against Multiple Myeloma, through his courage and steadfast faith. His faith in the redemptive work of Jesus leaves us with no doubt that Gary has now experienced the reality of 2Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Pearle and Clifton Christoson, his brothers Lawrence "Sonny" and Robert "Bobby" and his sister Jean Mellema. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian, his twin brother Jerry (Jadene), his son Gary (Sandra), daughter Cindy Blake (Ken), son Tim (Nicole), grandchildren Erin Husband (Aaron), Kayla LaVere (Gabe), Sarah Patterson (Justus), Megan Shrader (Brody), Courtney Pace (Garrett), Jessie Blake, Taylor Litzau (Jacob), Trevor, McKinley, Grant, and Monroe Christoson, great-grandchildren Mason, Jackson, and Savanna Husband; Blake, Hallie, Maverick, and Cash LaVere; Madden, Easton, and Kennedy Patterson; Gavin and Emmett Pace; Elliott Shrader and many nieces and nephews.

Gary’s family received friends and family for visitation at Keehn-Griffin Funeral Home in Brighton on Monday, March 18th from 5:00–8:00 p.m. A funeral service was held at Bible Baptist Church in Howell on Tuesday, March 19th at 11:00 a.m., with time for viewing at 10:00 a.m. Gary requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Bible Baptist Church's building program.

 Diane Marie Denton

Diane Marie Denton, age 70, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024 around 4:30pm at U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Diane was born Tuesday November 24, 1953 in Howell, MI at McPherson Memorial Hospital to George and Charlotte (Reyhl) Sherwood. She was raised in Fowlerville Michigan and graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1972. Diane was married to Danny Denton on April 27, 1973. She is predeceased by Charlotte and George Sherwood.

Diane was a wonderful mother. She is survived by her three children: Shawn Denton, Candice Denton and Kimberly Fisher. She is also survived by her six grandsons: Haddan, Jacob, Aiden, Elwood, Leland and Declan. Diane has two sisters, Cindy and Peggy, as well as four beautiful nieces and many cousins. She loved her family and loved her community.

Diane enjoyed trips up North and being outside. She would spend many days at the pond tucked back in the woods on her family’s land. She had a passion for interior design and is known for her wonderful style. Diane was loved by many and will be missed very much.

A funeral service was held on Thursday March 21, 2024 at Herrmann Funeral home in Fowlerville, MI at 5:00 pm, with visitation having started at 3:00 pm. The service was followed by dinner and a celebration of life at 5:30pm the at the Howell Eagles Club, with family and friends attending.

In remembrance of Diane’s life and love, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research.

 Calvin Walter Miller

Calvin Walter Miller of Brighton, Michigan (a former long-time Howell resident) passed away in the hospital on March 13, 2024 at 90 years of age. He was a beloved husband, father, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Calvin was born to Horace and Hellen Miller on June 5, 1933 in a small hospital in Goodrich, Michigan. He is preceded in death by his parents. In 1956 he married the love of his life, and together they raised their family of four boys.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, four boys, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the Fowlerville Church of the Nazarene. A public viewing took place at 10:00am, the funeral service was at 11:00am, and a luncheon immediately followed at the church.

 Firekeepers Casino Bus Trip & Breakfast being held on April 9th

St. Agnes’ next scheduled trip to Firekeepers is Tuesday, April 9th. We will be hosting breakfast at 9am at St. Agnes Church, 855 E Grand River Avenue, Fowlerville, in the Lothamer Parish Center prior to our bus leaving at 10am.

We will be going to Firekeepers Casino in Battle Creek. The cost is $50 and includes round trip bus transportation, $25 in free slot play and $5 to use toward dining, slot play or use in the gift shop.

Returning guests who bring their Red Hot Rewards Club card will get credits and points added to their existing card. Guests need to bring a valid ID to receive the group package. Those without Red Hot Rewards Cards will be issued them prior to entering casino.

A Carr’s Motorcoach Charter bus will leave the St. Agnes Church parking lot at 10:00 am. Anticipated arrival time back in Fowlerville is 5:30 pm.  Livingston County Genealogical Society to hold zoom meeting on April 4th

The Livingston County Genealogical Society will meet at 7pm Thursday, April 4th via zoom.

Derek Blount will present “Where are the Early Dead of Detroit”—a review of the early cemeteries of Detroit, what happened to them, and the people buried there. A discussion of where to find death records for the early days will also take place.

Blount is a professional genealogist. He has worked for 35 years on his family genealogy traveling across America, Canada and the United Kingdom gathering records. Derek was born in England and specializes in research in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth nations. He holds a B.S. degree from Oakland University and has completed coursework at the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh.

 Livingston Fine Art Association meeting on March 26th at Cleary University

 Melody Rae Canfield

A Memorial Luncheon and Gathering in honor of Melody Rae Canfield will be held on Saturday, April 6, from 1 to 4 p.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Fowlerville.

Melody was born on June 13, 1953 and passed away Oct. 16, 2023. She is survived by her husband Gordon Canfield and other family members. Her parents were the late Ralph and Mel LaMar. She and her mother owned and opearated Mel’s Auction for many years—both in Fowlerville and later in Stockbridge. She also wrote the column Grandma’s Attic for a number of years in the ‘Fowlerville News & Views’ which focused on antiques. She was a resident of Handy Township.

 Mary Margaret Snyder

Mary Margaret (Wendt) Snyder of Howell, Michigan passed away at home on March 9, 2024 at 86 years of age.

Mary, or Mitzy as she was also known was born January 4, 1938 to Roland and Grace (Cadwalk) Wendt in Highland Park, Michigan.

Preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Patricia (Patty ) Roberts, and lifelong partner, Ralph Snyder.

Survived by her niece, Debra Robillard, and longtime friends, Rex Hall, and Pat and Ron Drinkert, and her Godchildren, Susan Drinkert-Kern, and David, Ronnie, and Steve Drinkert.

She was brought up in the Catholic faith, however was more recently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fowlerville, Michigan.

Mary had a marvelous capacity for being loving and caring for others, whether human or animal, and was known to have taken in and nurtured a number of stray dogs. She had a fondness for children and was a wealth of knowledge for younger people. Though she had no children of her own, she was exceptionally Motherly.

Following graduation from Redford High School in 1955, Mary worked for many years at Michigan Bell during which she met and married Ralph Snyder. Together, their entrepreneurial spirit prompted them to purchase and operate Ace Transformer Service Company. The company was successfully profitable and the pair sold Ace Transformer in 1997 with the prospect of retiring.

Even during her working years, Mary often would spontaneously pack a suitcase and embark on a travel adventure. The destination was not always the more important part of the trip rather it was the experiences along the journey.

Mary will certainly be well-remembered for her straightforward and unapologetic honesty. Often her sage advice was not necessarily what one wanted to hear, yet it was what needed to be heard.

Visitation took place from 3-7pm at Herrmann Funeral Home, Fowlerville, Michigan on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. The funeral service was held at 11am on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Interment was in the chapel at Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia, Michigan.

Mary would be appreciative of memorial contributions to Habitat for Humanity.

Harold Kuehn Canfield

Harold Kuehn Canfield, (97) formerly of Fowlerville and Sebewaing, Michigan, after a very long and full life, died in the early hours of March 7, 2024, with family at his side.

Harold was born in Fowlerville, Michigan on June 27, 1926, to Howard Albert Canfield and Hazel Mae (Kuehn) Canfield. A 1944 graduate of Fowlerville High School, he grew up on the farm and loved farming with his father, Howard. After a short three-month courtship, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Gentry, on June 11, 1949.

Harold and Jean began their long life together on a small farm in Fowlerville, where they quickly expanded their family, adding six children in seven years. While farming was Harold’s occupation of choice, with an expanding family he supplemented his income by working outside the farm. He worked early on as a lumber jack for Monroe Brothers, and then as a factory worker at Ruland Electric Co. Later, because all farmers love moving dirt, he spent many years working for the Livingston County Road Commission as a heavy equipment operator. He had moved dirt and/or snow on most of the roads in Livingston County.

Upon retiring from the Road Commission, Harold and Jean sought a way back to fulltime farming and they bought a 160-acre farm in Leslie, Michigan, where he said he “never worked another day in his life”. After several years they sold the farm and moved to Perry, Michigan. When health issues made it clear that he and Jean would need more help, they moved closer to family in Sebewaing, Michigan, where he loved to watch the crops grow and the beet trucks pass by his window.

Harold was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved all things outdoors. He flew small airplanes early on, but having kids ended that risky pursuit. He had an expansive Indian arrowhead collection only eclipsed by his stamp collection. He loved playing cards. He was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church. Harold was a great father and mentor to his six children, but his greatest love was for his wife of just short of 70 years “Jeanie”, who preceded him in death on April 20, 2019. This along with the death of his oldest child, Susan (Canfield) Dana, left a great hole in his life.

Harold is survived by his other five children: Michael (Carla Slatten), Tom (Becky Goodimote), John, Edward (Cheryl Barker), and Keith (Carrie Rostar) as well as many grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Dorotha (Canfield/Brown) Knodle. His other sister, Margary (Canfield) Perkins preceded him in death.

Please join us in celebrating a life well lived on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 11 am in Howell with a light luncheon to follow the service. Details regarding location will be forthcoming. There will be a short graveside service after the luncheon at the Sanford Cemetery in Howell.

Charles ‘Chuck’ Epley

Charles Robert “Chuck” Epley (73) of Sun City, AZ, passed Wednesday, February 28th, surrounded by his family at Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, AZ. Chuck was born August 14, 1950 in Howell, MI, to Robert & Margaret (Witt) Epley.

He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Fowlerville, graduating with the Class of 1968. Later that fall Chuck enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving honorably, with two tours in Vietnam, until 1972. The exposure to “Agent Orange” while serving led to health issues that plagued him later in life. After his discharge, he returned home to work on the family farm.

On December 21, 1974, Chuck married Kathleen Patricia Grund of Baltimore, MD. Chuck was later trained and licensed as a heavy equipment mechanic and moved his family to Yuma, AZ, securing employment with the Department of Army at the Yuma Proving Grounds. After 17 years Chuck retired for health reasons.

The Yuma home was open to friends and family as Chuck and Kathy’s children grew up in the beautiful resort town along the Colorado River. Chuck loved his wife, children, and grandchildren very much, sharing many adventures with each.

Chuck is predeceased by his parents Robert and Margaret Epley, son Matthew Epley (1992), and nephew Troy Recker (2006). He is survived by his wife Kathy; daughter Kelly (Mark) Wennsman of San Jose, CA, son Christopher (Heather) of Jacksonville, FL, daughter Meghan of Yuma, AZ, and daughter Erin (Davina) Epley-Shoemake of Surprise, AZ.; 12 grandchildren; siblings Judy Recker, Jack Epley, Mary Donohue, Peg (Bob) Smith, and Mark (Julie) Epley all of Michigan; aunt Nelly Epley Shirley of Florida and aunt Frances (Bernard) Bessert of Michigan; plus many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The Marine Corps volunteers at Hospice of the Valley held a ceremony at Chuck’s bedside before passing. A private Memorial was held at his daughter’s home in Surprise, AZ. Further arrangements are pending. Memorial contributions can be sent to Hospice of the Valley 14066 W Waddle Road, Surprise, AZ 85379 or to the family for future designation. 

 Robert T. Krichke

Robert T. Krichke went to be with his Lord and Saviour on March 4, 2024, surrounded by his family. Bob was born to Otto and Jean Krichke in Detroit where he graduated from Cody High. He joined the Detroit Police where he spent 12 years including a few years with the mounted police. He moved his family to Fowlerville to raise horses and live in the country.

He was the Police Chief of Fowlerville for 10 years and then became Police Chief of Hamburg Township for 21 years. After retirement he moved to Crossville, Tennessee. He enjoyed being on the golf course, singing gospel music and watching his son show Arabian horses.

He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara of 52 years and his brother Ralph. He is survived by his children Kathy, Keith (Maureen) Diane (Ronald Hicks), grandchildren Amy, Amanda, Nicolas, Faith and Hope and several great grandchildren. He is also survived by his beloved partner Faye Bockhausen and his brother Ken.

Visitation was held Thursday, March 7, 3-7 pm. Funeral service took place on Friday, March 8, 11 am at Herrmann Funeral Home in Fowlerville with Pastor Jeff Howard officiating. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to: Wounded Warriors, Tunnels to Towers, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

 Ruthann Lynn Lockwood

Ruthann Lynn Lockwood, age 70, passed away February 29, 2024. She was born on June 5, 1953, in Michigan to Leonard and Colleen Wurster. Ruthann married Michael Lockwood in 1996 in Cohoctah Michigan.

Prior to retirement Ruthann held many different positions, ran businesses, delivered newspapers and was a very loyal employee. Also, a Life Member at the VFW Post 6464, Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW. Ruthann was an avid bingo player and played a fair number of cards all at one time. She was often a winner!

Ruthann wore her signature long nails that were always painted and expertly manicured. Ruthann was a caregiver to many and a very generous person with a big heart. She would never hesitate to give her opinion and would "tell it like it is" to your "happy ass". She was a strong presence and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ruthann leaves behind her husband Mike and children Brian Farr (Tami) and Machelle Farr. She is also survived by her Mother Colleen Wurster and Grandchildren Boyd Farr, Cassandra Farr and Kimberly Hyche as well as special nieces and nephews.

Ruthann was preceded in joining our Lord by her Father Leonard Wurster, Brother Douglas Wurster, Brother Scott Wurster, her Son Boyd Farr, and Granddaughter Taylor.

A memorial Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.

 Trees for bees: Creating ‘meadows in the sky’ for pollinators

The Michigan Beekeepers Association wants you to plant trees for bees! This group is the oldest continuously operating agricultural organization in the state and one of the oldest beekeeping clubs in the country. Its Trees for Pollinators program helps plant trees for the environment and provide resources for essential pollinators such as honeybees. “Honeybees are the most important pollinating insects in the world,” said Mike Connor, Michigan Beekeepers Association beekeeper, arborist and founder of the Grand Rapids Bee Club.  Trees for Pollinators took root three years ago when Connor and Michigan Beekeepers Association president Rich Wieske started to encourage people to plant pollen- and nectar-producing trees. Together, the two solidified a plan to make pollinator-friendly trees available through local bee clubs. Wieske sold 100 basswood trees out of the trunk of his car in the first year. In the second year, more than 1,300 flowering trees were planted. “Trees are meadows in the sky,” said Connor. “Some trees have millions of flowers that provide large quantities of quality nectar and pollen.” As the Trees for Pollinators program continues, Wieske aims to get more pollinator-friendly trees in the ground by starting a tradition of planting a tree for every child born. “Given the essential role honeybees play in crop pollination, it’s only sensible that the Michigan Beekeepers Association might commemorate new life by planting a tree to give back to the bees that work to sustain us,” said Wieske.

Trees for Pollinators trees are available to purchase through the Michigan Beekeepers Association website through March 17. This year, several trees have been selected to fill pollinator needs:

      · Pussy willows, blooming in April, help bee colonies with                    pollen and nectar as they emerge in the spring. 

      · Flowering crabapples provide nectar and pollen in early May.          They also provide winter food for robins and cedar waxwings. 

      · Tulip poplars are large trees and produce an exceptionally                  high nectar yield per flower.

      · American basswoods create high-quality nectar in great                    quantities for honeybees.

      · Winged sumac produces large quantities of nectar

in August, supporting bees and butterflies. The Michigan Beekeepers Association website shares growing information for each of the trees offered. A portion of proceeds benefits the organization and the local clubs that will distribute trees for pickup in April. Questions? The Williamston Eagles will be holding only one Euchre Tournament this month, due to the Easter holiday. Join us on Friday, March 15th for a fun night of cards. Registration is 6-6:30pm and play begins at 7pm. Cost is still $10 per person and you don't have to bring a partner. Come down and show us your mad Euchre skills, or learn some new tips! Bring a friend or two or make some new ones.

 Meals on Wheels needs volunteers for Fowlerville-Gregory areas

The Meals on Wheels program needs volunteers in the Fowlerville & Gregory areas. We would love the opportunity for you to be part of our team. This is a commitment of 1-2 hours of your time as little or as often as your schedule will allow. Once a month, once a week, temporary, or on a continuous basis. Delivering meals to homebound seniors is a very rewarding experience.

 Bruce Lee Sefton

Bruce Lee Sefton, age 62 years old, passed away on Feb. 26, 2024 at Trinity Health Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born on June 12, 1961 in Pontiac, Michigan to Evelyn (Kummeth) and Paul Sefton. He attended Fowlerville Community Schools and resided in Ypsilanti.

Bruce was the second in line of seven children. After high school Bruce joined the Navy, following in his fathers footsteps. He married Catherine McDonald in 1987 and they had four wonderful children; Brittany, Christopher, Jacob and Joshua.

Bruce was a builder and Master carpenter. His talents in those areas were amazing and figuring out how to “fix it and make it look good” was second nature to him. Bruce loved his family and spending time with them.

Surviving are his siblings: Susan (James) Mills, Kathleen (Michael) Tulgestke, Thomas Sefton and Barbara Sefton-Tabit; sis children: Brittany Sefton (Billy), Christopher (Sarah) Sefton, Jacob Sefton, and Joshua (Amber) Sefton; his 11 grandchildren: Sawyer, Greyson, Fallyn, Atlas, Evley, Link, Colt, Riven, Skylynn, Paisley, and Mila; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held at Herrmann Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00pm on Thursday, Feb. 29th with a Rosary at 5:30pm. Visitation continued at 10:00am on Friday, March 1st preceding the 11:00am funeral mass at St Agnes Catholic Church in Fowlerville. Memorials suggested to the family.

 Laurine (Renie) Mae Hoffman

(1929-2024)

Laurine Hoffman passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024 at the age of 94. She was born in Chicago on May 22, 1929, to Robert and Mabel Rice. She married Robert Dean Hoffman on August 23, 1947.

Moving several times, the family made a home in Bellaire, MI and Fowlerville, MI. Most recently she has been a resident of Golf Lakes Estates in Bradenton, FL for the last 40+ years where she loved being around her friends and visiting family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Hoffman and son Bob Hoffman who is survived by Chad (Madison). She is survived by a daughter, Terrie (Jerry) Ash, with children, Ryan (Tessa) and Jana (Dahl). A son, Mark Hoffman (Lynne), with children Sarah (Jonathon), Jesse, Samuel, Benjamin, and Adrienne. A son James (Kelly) Hoffman with children, James (Samantha), and Jacob. Nine great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

 Webberville United Methodist Church offering Chicken Dinner on March 16th

Webberville United Methodist Church, located at 4215 E. Holt Rd., is having a drive-through chicken dinner on Saturday, March 16. The dinner includes 2 pieces oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes, chicken gravy, green beans, corn casserole, coleslaw, roll and cookies. All for $10. The dinner will be served 5 to 7 pm or until we run out.

 Residents invited to support Livingston County Veterans Memorial project

Located in the heart of the City of Howell on the lawn of the historic Livingston County Courthouse, the Livingston County Veterans Memorial is a special place for our community. Built in the 1940’s, it lists the names of the veterans from Livingston County who gave their lives in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. This spring, the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation is working alongside local partners and the community to raise funds to enhance the memorial.

Six jet black granite stones displaying the badges of the United States military would be added to the memorial’s benches, along with lighting improvements. The entire cost of the project is approximately $25,000, but in order to have the enhancements installed by Veteran’s Day 2024, the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation is looking to raise $10,000 by April. This is where our community fits in. Your donations to this project will directly pay tribute to veterans who served. Help us make the memorial more of a centerpiece for those who visit downtown Howell and drive past it on Grand River Avenue.

Anyone interested in donating is invited to do so using the Howell Area of Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Stripe link at https://buy.stripe.com/bIYg0962f6ig4ZGfYY. All funds raised for the enhancement project will be administered solely by the Foundation, which is a 501c3 organization whose mission is to receive and administer funds for educational, cultural, scientific, and charitable purposes and for the public welfare of the Livingston County community.
