Norma Sorensen

Norma Sorensen of Fowlerville passed away peacefully at Brookdale Meridian Assisted Living in Haslett on November 13, 2023. Norma, the oldest of eleven children, was born in Detroit on April 30, 1927, to Benjamin and Florence Olrich. The family moved to the Howell and Byron area in 1934. Norma graduated from Byron High School and went on to get a Degrees in Home Economics and Teaching from Michigan State University. She married Harry Sorensen of Fowlerville in 1948. Norma and Harry moved to Fowlerville where they built a house on Converse Road in 1954.

Norma began her career as an elementary school teacher for the Fowlerville School System in 1957, teaching a year-and-a-half at the Randall School and later as a fourth and fifth grade teacher in Fowlerville until retiring from full time teaching in 1994. After retirement, she continued part time as a teacher in the Sunrise School program, providing extra reading and math instruction for students deficient in these areas. Norma was also elected and served for several years as a Fowlerville District Library trustee.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Florence, her husband Harry, her sister Bernice Phillips, and her brother Gerald. She is survived by her four children Harry (Kathy), Judson (Roberta), Darcy (Rebecca), and Laura Peterson along with two sisters Mary Sharpe and Naomi Schultheis, six brothers Sam, Dan, Paul, Tom, Clark and Ron, eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral was held celebrating Norma’s life at the Fowlerville United Brethren Church at 11:00 am on November 17, 2023, and she was laid to rest at Fowlerville’s

Greenwood Cemetery.
