 George Arvid Benjamin

George Arvid Benjamin—dedicated father, brother, husband, grandfather and friend—passed away peacefully surrounded by family at his home in Fowlerville, MI on Friday, December 29, 2023.

George was born to Cecil & Ellen Benjamin in Howell, MI on March 13, 1943. He graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1961. After graduation, George attended Lansing Community College while working at the Fowlerville Community State Bank until February of 1968. In March of 1968 he began his career at General Motors where he retired in December 2002. Not only did George work full time at GM, he also farmed the property that he grew up on for over 60 years.

Through the years, George enjoyed bowling, fishing, golf, hunting, and snowmobiling. George also enjoyed playing cards with his brother Gordon, his Uncle Fred, his Aunt Lois (and other friends from time to time) and won many games at the card table. George was the life of every party, was very witty and had a good sense of humor.

George loved going to the U.P. every year with his family, along with his sister Mary’s family for a week of fun & fishing. He spent much time at the baseball field watching his son, daughter, nephews and grandson play ball. George loved sweets, especially his granddaughter’s cupcakes and cinnamon rolls. After he retired, George enjoyed spending most of the summer months at their cottage on the lake with his wife, Rose. Driving the pontoon & fishing made him very happy.

George was preceded in death by his father, Cecil, his mother, Ellen, his sister, Janet and his sister-in-law, Nancy.

George is survived by his wife, Rose. His children, Mike Benjamin and Terri (Scott) Peterson. Four grandchildren, Macy (Matt) Wester, Andrew (Courtney) Benjamin, Trevor Peterson and Paige Peterson. Three great-grandchildren, Juanita, Garner and Xylar Benjamin. His sister, Mary (Harold) Anderson and his brother, Gordon Benjamin.

A private memorial was held for George on January 6, 2024.
